I am forty and she still lets me know how she feels about my decisions, where she thinks I am making mistakes, and what she thinks I should be doing. I know that she does it out of love, and because she never stops being my mother, even if I am grown-up with my own family to raise. Being a biological parent isn’t the only way that we fill this role. In addition to other ways regarding children, we are also called to be spiritual parents. As Christians, we are not only called to learn from others, we are called to teach others. The Apostle Paul took many under his wing, with the most prominent probably being Timothy. Paul calls Timothy his spiritual son and he wrote multiple letters to Timothy that are included in the New Testament. One of the important things about Paul and Timothy’s relationship is that Timothy was released to be a Christian leader and discipler and as he was still being discipled by Paul. The apostle had nurtured and taught Timothy, raising him in the faith, and even as Timothy was off caring for churches, he was still being spiritually parented. Ephesians 4:11-12 says, “11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” It would be easy to read this as saying that apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers have the job of spiritually parenting, but Paul said that these people have the job of equipping the saints for the work of ministry. Doesn’t that assume that those who are already in the roles of shepherds, teachers, etc. have the responsibility of raising others up to do similar things? Maybe I am called to be a pastor and you are not. But if my job is to equip you for ministry, then surely you are called to do more than just receive teaching. One of the primary things you are being equipped for is to spiritually parent, or disciple, others. Doing so provides much the same joy and difficulty that being a parent to your children does. It is amazing to watch someone come to the Lord, struggle with the spiritual milk, as the bible calls it, and then watch them, through discipleship and nurturing, grow from infant, to child, to mature adult. There is a joy in seeing your children reach milestones- reading, riding a bike, etc.- and there is a joy in seeing another Christian wrestle with the faith and hit new levels of growth and maturity. We will glorify God by deepening the roots of our Anglican faith, and bringing people to new life in Jesus Christ.

One of the great joys of being a parent is watching your kids mature and grow from infants who can do nothing for themselves, into of ever-increasing levels self-sufficiency. There are various stages that they go through as they explore the world around them. There is a stage of wonder and amazement. A stage of self-centeredness. A stage of exploring boundaries and limits. A stage of asking tons

of questions. Eventually, you get to the stage where they begin to challenge you, and, as hard as that is, it is also a sign that they are now mature enough to begin to wrestle with truth on their own and they are getting close to attaining their independence.

Being a parent is both wonderful and difficult. It is often both things at the same time, mixed with thirty other things ranging from fulfilling to soul-shattering. That is what it is like to be responsible for someone else’s life, especially as they are necessarily trying to wrestle that responsibility from you and take control themselves.

I also know that we never stop being parents. While my children are not yet adults, my mother still treats me like her child at times. And I don’t just mean like a son, but like her child.

ORDINARY TIME We are now in the season of ordinary time, celebrated with the color green. It is the liturgical period that does not fall within the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter, and runs for 34 weeks. it is celebrated two times a year throughout the year. The first period runs from the feast of baptism of the Lord until the Tuesday evening before Ash Wednesday and the second from the second Sunday of Pentecost to the 26th Sunday of Pentecost. It is a time of growth and renewal in each Christians spiritual life.

Thank you Toni DuBois, Bonnie Bridge, and Taylor DuBois for helping me with the kids movie night and making it a success. We had 8 kids total, and we watched Paddington Bear 2, which was an awesome movie! The kids had snacks and juice boxes, and glowsticks galore! A great time was had by all! We are very much looking forward to the next one! God bless you all! Erika Jo Dielman

“EQUIPPING THE SAINTS” You all know that I am blessed to have myriad friends who are clergy, and they all look at the mission and ministry of the church a little bit differently. Some focus more on evangelism, some more on discipleship, and yet others on service or prayer. No matter what their strongest gift is, or what their driving force is for their church, they all do what they do to bring glory to God and to Him alone! And I feel very blessed and very privileged to call each and every one of them friends! If we think about it, the spiritual life (via the process of sanctification) is a lot like going to school. That is first we are adopted as sons and daughters of God, and then we get to know Him more through His word, and then through prayer, and our various gifts, etc.. then we seek to become more and more like Him by striving to exhibit more of His characteristics, and less of our own.

Like Fr. Mike talked about in the sermon this past Sunday, we are to exhibit humility, and gentleness, and patience, because those are all attributes and characteristics of God, but I know, it is easier said than done! But the more of Him we seek, the more like Him we become. It’s those moments when we don’t want to be humble, but choose to be that we are more Christ-like. It’s those moments when we don’t want to be gentle, but choose to be that we are more like Him. Or when we choose to be patient. This takes work. This is why we say that sanctification is a process, It takes a life time, it’s not something that just happens overnight. And, unlike school, we don’t “graduate” in our faith, we don’t reach a point where we just say “I’ve arrived”, but rather we choose each and every day to be more and more like the very one who created us, and focus more on bearing His image rather than our own, or the one we want people to see. That is the life and relationship that God has called us to. That is why He has drawn us to Himself. That is why He created us, so that we can become more like Him, and then go share His message of redemption, and reconciliation with the rest of the world that so desperately needs to hear it.

So the question we must ask ourselves, then, is “Who is God calling me to share His message with?” and then follow that leading! I cannot wait to see and to hear how God will use you. Because one seemingly small step in obedience, can lead to many magnificent moments where God will work in and through you, and most importantly, His name will be glorified!

God bless you all! Erika Jo Dielman

Giving to the Spreading of the Gospel

In 2012, New Life Anglican Church invested in a commitment to

support the MossyFoot Project in Ethiopia. Now six years later, we

as a church, continue that commitment through prayer and financial

support.

This year we have been sending them monthly donations and on

October 17th we have a Mission Team leaving for Ethiopia. Please

keep our team members: Bonnie & Mickey Bridge, Ginger Downey,

Kim Redman & Dan Wandrie in your prayers. Watch our upcoming

bulletins for the updated Mission Trip Fundraiser insert. Thank you

to everyone who has donated so generously to this Mission Trip and

the MossyFoot Project.

WOMEN'S MINISTRY GROUPS – Gideon Mighty Warrior

Our ladies Bible Study has just finished the story of Gideon as presented by Priscilla Shirer, Gideon: Your Weakness. God's Strength. The story takes place in chapters 6,7,8 of the book of Judges. The Israelites were evil and for seven years God gave them into the hands of the Midianites. God sent a prophet to Gideon and instructed him as to what God wanted him to do as his people had not listened to him. However, Gideon wanted a sign. Not one but three. He was to prepare meat and bread and the angel touched it with his staff and it was consumed by fire. He was then instructed to build an altar and to tear down Baal's altar and the Asherah pole. Gideon still wanted a sign and asked for fleece to be wet one day and dry the next. God did so. God took Gideon's mighty army of twenty two thousand down to three hundred and with fire, pottery, and trumpets they had victory over thousands of Midianites. A sweet victory conquered by Gideon and his army of three hundred. His men hailed him and wanted to honor him as ruler over them. However he did not want to rule. "The Lord will rule over you." His fate...give me an earring from your plunder. He fashioned an Ephod and placed it in Ophrah where they worshiped it. Sound familiar. When Moses went up the mountain to receive the 10 commandments, his people got impatient for his return and took earrings and fashioned a calf to worship. The land where Gideon, his family, and his people made their home was at peace for forty years then Gideon died. What did his people do? They set up Ball-Berith as their God and did not remember the Lord their God who rescued them. Are take away from Gideon's Story. Who is Your King? What idol do you worship today? Wealth. Power. T.V. Your cell phone. Your stuff. Who is your King...

Blessings, Karen Dielman

Unlike being a parent to your own children, being a spiritual parent really has no limits. Eventually, our children grow up and our opportunities to parent get fewer and fewer. And we hit an age where having more children becomes either impossible, or at least a really bad idea. There is no such barrier with spiritual children. As you watch some grow up and head off to disciple others, there are always new people to raise in the faith. You can take on a new spiritual child at age 90. Unless you are Sarah or Abraham, you probably won’t have any new physical children at that age.

What I hope is that you won’t miss the opportunities that God has placed before you to raise others in the faith, even as you are still growing in it yourself. There are so many people who need guidance. They just need someone to carry them and care for them as they sort through things and try to grow into spiritual adults. At one point in the gospels we are told that Jesus saw the people and had compassion because they were as sheep without a shepherd. We have an opportunity to make sure that those around us don’t spend their time as unattended sheep roaming the countryside trying to figure out where to go. Don’t be afraid to be the shepherd, even if it is to just one little sheep. Being a spiritual parent and raising another in the faith is every bit as satisfying, and as necessary as raising our physical children in this world.
