News fromThe Hermitage

Dear Friends

At this time of the year, leavesare falling everywhere, even inCyprus, not as much as the UK,or Western countries but withthe darker evenings and awinter chill setting in we areconfronted yet again with theeternal change of seasons. Astrees become bare and theleaves that fall become dry anddie, we can be reminded of ourown life span and mortality. One of the most significantadditions to our annual churchservices in the past few yearshas been the All Souls servicewhich takes place on the 2ndNovember. We use the image ofa leaf to write the name ofdeparted loved ones, and theyare attached to what we call a"Remembering Tree". Duringthe service the leaves aregathered up and brought to thealtar to place into God's eternaland everlasting care.

There is a profound messagehere for us as Christians. Wesee the physical trees all aroundus become bare and to allintents and purposes "dead" asthe leaves fall. However, despitewhat we see with our eyes andexperience, we know, althoughwe cannot see it, that the treeswill spring into life again and theleaves will return. This is awonderful parallel for us aschildren of God when all aroundus, in our own mortal lives andin the world, we are given hopeand the promise of everlastinglife. We cannot see what shapethat promise will take just ascurrently we cannot see freshleaves budding but we knowthey will come and we cancommend our loved ones to thatlove that has conquered death.Despite the fact we do not seeour loved ones and we grievetheir loss, we can find comfortand reassurance that we are stilltogether in God's love. May weall know that love that knows noboundaries in this life and thenext.Every blessing,

Wendy

Friends ofSt Andrew's

A letter from Pat EtheringtonHello Everybody,Well we certainly had a lovely start to our worship in October aswe welcomed a group of 24 people who were on a Pilgrimageand that most joyful of occasions, a baptism. They all looked sohappy that she had been received into the church. Thedownstairs hall was again put to good use for the overflowcongregation. We seem to have had an exceptionally large number of visitorsover the past few weeks and I'm sure we all find it very pleasantwhen they find their way down into the hall for coffee and a chatafter the service.Well, as promised Portsmouth Cathedral Girl Choristers andChoral scholars came to perform at St Andrew's on the 24thand they were certainly worth waiting for! Evensong is not aservice we normally celebrate which made it even moreappealing and being a relative newcomer to the Anglican Faith Ihave never before taken part in a choral evensong which gaveit even more impact for me. It was such a beautiful service andthey all seemed to enjoy singing as much as we enjoyedlistening to them. The evening concert surpassed every onesexpectations, I was certainly reminded of the hymn which says"Let the organ thunder" because it surely did to such greateffect. The Director of Music, Dr David Price, even gave ourorgan a compliment. The evening programme included works by Vaughan Williams,

During Evensongb three beautiful oakp pews were dedicatedd to commemorate theG Golden wedding ofn Linda and Ian Smith.

Brahms, Howells and McCartney (a detailed list is given on theSt Andrew's website - www.standrewskyrenia.org) and also featuredorgan solos including one given by the Cathedral's organscholar Ben Banks. We all joined the choir in singing the hymnAngel Voices, ever singing. Altogether a magnificent evening!!An very different evening was held in theHermitage gardens on Saturday the 21st.A well attended talk was given by Miko Peled, an Israeli peace activist, which wascertainly very thought provoking. To bringabout a peace settlement between theIsraelis and the Palestinians would be amagnificent achievement. On Thursday November 2nd we will behaving our All Souls service at 2.pm.Our weather is really cooling down now andwe have had some rain, not as much as the paper threatenedus with but a start. The bulk of our rain seems to arrive after theNew Year so we have a while to wait yet. I think swims in thepool are about over for this year.Well I think I have brought you up to date on our activities fornow.

So love to all Pat E

Feast of Christ the King - 20 NovemberIt refers to the concept of the Kingdom of God where the Christ isimagined as seated at the Right Hand of God. The Solemnity of OurLord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly referred to as theFeast of Christ the King, is a relatively recent addition to the Westernliturgical calendar, having been instituted in 1925 by Pope Pius XI forthe Roman Catholic Church in response to growing secularism. TheAnglican, Lutheran, and many other Protestant churches adopted italong with the Revised Common Lectionary, occasionally referring to it as Christ the KingSunday. Many religious facilities are named inhonor of Christ the King.

Today I met with Marlene, her husband Jinan, and their twochildren Mariam (9) and Miran (5). This family graciously sharedtheir story with me and it is one that I will never forget. Marlene isfrom a small town near Mosul. She lived there with her immediateand extended family until her father was brutally killed by al-Qaedain 2007.Her father worked at the local church alongside the priest - herfather and the priest were killed together (Marlene witnessedthis). The man responsible threatened everyone and told themthey were not allowed to bury her father, that he would personallykill anyone who tried. Thankfully, Marlene's brother was able tosneak into the church and recover the body and the family was

Page 17: MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW KYRENIA · MAGAZINE OF THE ANGLICAN CHURCH OF ST ANDREW KYRENIA T o L o v e G o d, T o L o v e E ac hOt e r a n d t o L o v e O u r N

able to give him a Christian burial. After the murder of theirfather, Marlene and her family received several death threats andso they fled to Qaraqosh, a Christian town near Mosul. Here, a fewweeks later Marlene's mother passed away. Marlene is the eldestof 7 inherited the responsibility of caring for her young siblings.Money was extremely tight and the family were forced intoputting two of the younger brothers into an orphanage as theycould not support them.In 2008, Marlene brought her family to Jambour where herhusband's family is from. They lived there with her husband's 4handicapped sisters. They struggled to support the increasingnumber of family members dependent on them. The local churchprovided them with a tiny windowless house that was not reallyhabitable - they were told they could live there if they couldrepair it. As Christians, it was difficult to find work and theystruggled constantly to make ends meet. When Daesh camethings got worse. More young Sunni men in the town wererecruited to join Daesh and the Christian families were increasinglythreatened, scared and vulnerable. The family tried to flee to Erbilseven times, often sleeping rough, terrified of what washappening back in Jambour. Each time they were refused entryuntil finally in 2014 the Kurdish police allowed them and 50 otherChristian families to go to the city of Dohuk. In Dohuk living conditions were not much better. Marlene livedwith her family in a tiny house with 23 other people and washelped once more by a local church. Eventually, they were kickedout of the house, so she set up a tent for her family outside. Shestruggled to find a way to send her children to school. During thistime her uncle was kidnapped by Daesh and to this day they stilldo not know his fate.Things changed for the better in 2015 when they came toJordan. They moved to Madaba (a town to the south of Amman)where they found support and hope from the Christian communitythere. We supported by providing the family with money for rent. They live in a tiny flat but their faith is ever present. Posters ofJesus are taped to the wall and this time there is at least onewindow to let some light in.

All Saints Day and All Souls DayAll Saints Day, All Hallow’s Day or Hallowmas falls on November1st each year. It’s a day for remembering all the Christian saintsand martyrs and paying tribute to them with festivals andreligious services. All Saints Day is followed by All Souls Day onNovember 2nd. All Souls Day is all about remembering all thosewho have died. Both Anglicans and Roman Catholics celebrate All Saints’ Dayby holding a festival to remember all holy saints. The tradition ofcelebrating the saints and martyrs has been marked byChristians ever since the 4th century but it was only formalisedfor the first time in 609AD when Pope Boniface IV decreed thatall martyrs should also be celebrated on the 13th May duringsomething he called the Feast of All Holy Martyrs. In 837ADPope Gregory IV extended the festival to include saints, renaming the festival the Feast of All Saints and changing thedate to November 1st and the festival has been marked on thatdate ever since.

This year FRRME would like to do something specialfor the Iraqi refugees we are helping. We would like youto write them a Christmas card. Your message doesn'thave to be person-specific, rather an expression ofChristian love for the displaced and dispossed.Iraqi refugees have experienced things we can only

imagine - armed fanatics knocking down their doors, having to abandontheir homes in a split second forever, the months and years spent inrefugee camps. Despite triumphant statements about the defeat ofDaesh, millions of Iraqis are still homeless, languishing on the scrap-heap of history. But with your love and support, we are doing what wecan to make their lives better, to give them hope. All you have to do is post your card to us at the below address and wewill do the rest:The Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East,PO Box 229, Petersfield, Hampshire, UK, GU32 9DL

According to Mark Wood at Christian Today many evangelicalprotestants are uncomfortable with saints as it seems to ranksome Christians more highly than others. Thus many Christiansextend the celebration of All Saints Day to everyone who is aChristian. ‘We are all saints, in a biblical sense,’ he writes.‘So All Saints Day is a time to be thankful for all those Christianswho have lived before us, whether they are officially saints ornot. Some are the great teachers ad prophets from history. Some are those who’ve taught and inspired us personally. Some are our friends and family. We can thank God for theirwitness, and for the way they have transmitted the faith downthe generations. We can learn from their lives. We can take timeto be grateful for what we’ve received, and to recommitourselves to follow in their footsteps.’ Kenya Sinclair, a writer atCatholic Online, echoes this sentiment saying All Saints Day is a‘call to live as saints’.All Souls’ Day is usually the day after All Saints’ Day and is allabout praying for the souls of the dead so they can leavepurgatory and go to heaven. During All Souls’ prayers,Christians ask for God’s mercy for them. This is also the day theBook of the Dead is opened near the altar of churches to allowpeople to write the names of their relatives that they want to beremembered.Christians have been praying for their departed brothers andsisters since the earliest days of Christianity. Early liturgies andinscriptions on catacomb walls attest to the ancientness ofprayers for the dead, even if the Church needed more time todevelop a substantial theology behind the practice. Praying forthe dead is actually borrowed from Judaism, as indicated in 2Maccabees 12:41-42. In the New Testament, St Paul prays formercy for his departed friend Onesiphorus (2 Timothy 1:18).All Souls’ Day tends to be more prevalent in European Catholicchurch but is related to similar events worldwide. In Mexico forexample, there is the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) andin China there is the Chinese Ghost Festival.

Here at St Andrew’s we are working hard to be a church community that livesout its appreciation of, and awareness of, the goodness, generosity and thegreatness of God. All forms of service, including our financial giving, areencouraged and developed on the basis of a response to God’s call to us.

Our giving should be a prayerful and spiritual expression of all this, like giving agift to a loved one. When we give we are not paying our dues, but engaging inan act of thanksgiving. Over the past few years we have seen the widercommunity join with us in giving to those who are needy throughout the world aswell as locally. Of course we need financial contributions in order to sustain allthat we do. Anything you feel able to give, however small, will be deeplyappreciated and understood as encouragement to us to build this work here.

We are now a UK registered charity and we would ask those of you who believein and support our ministry to change the way you give, and channel it throughour charity. Regular giving no matter how small by standing order doesfacilitate forward planning and budgeting.
