Will we have ROOM for any new plants next year? Where can I put those bulbs that I bought at the Bulb Sale? When one loves so many types of flowers and plants, it is really difficult. Can anyone else relate to this? Speaking of bulbs, a big thank-you goes out to Alicja Paradzik, Linda Edser and Pat Zander who organized another successful Bulb Sale on behalf of the club and to those members who contributed bulbs from your gardens. November brings us to the last business meeting of the year and I would like to thank those members who help make our meetings friendly, welcoming, informative and expedient. We have had some super speakers again this year and the educational caliber is awesome. In November we will be able to view events that occurred throughout this gardening year and see some wonderful photos, put together by our member Judy Runzer. Also please check and see if you have anything to contribute to our Xmas raffle in December, as Glenda Uthe is busy working on putting a large bas- ket together for a lucky member. I always look forward to our potluck dinners, as in my experience gardeners seem to be amazing chefs! We will be entertained by a guitar/violin duo called Austin Philly, so it should be a great event. As you see, even though we are busy working with cleanup in our gardens at this time of year and things are winding down in our gardens, there are still interesting events planned for the next 2 months of our garden club year. Be thinking of signing up for your 2015 memberships early, as once again we will have a free membership draw in March 2015. Allotment at Dove Hill,

Boxley Kent england

This is a new allotment this year. My brother in law, Mick Beckwith is standing beside (to give an indication of height) a container for zucchini. It has been made of turfs/sod that was dug up to make the plots. By creating such a planter for the zucchini, it uses the sod, maintains moisture and holds heat. I thought it was a clever idea and one I had not seen before.

Speakers for 2014 were: March: Gwen Steele: Plants that Shine.

April: Gordon Hiebert of Eco-Design: “Eat your Yard” May: Judy Villeneuve: Low Maintenance Landscaping

(using dwarf and miniature conifers) June: Bruce Kemp, photographer: Flower and Garden

Special guest speaker: I organized a special presentation by guest speaker Sara Williams, lecturer from University of Saskatoon Continuing Ed. Her topic was “Perennials: Basic and Beyond” which she developed especially for the Kelowna Garden Club and Okanagan growing conditions. Because donations were requested rather than charging an admission fee, the Okanagan College waived the rental for the theatre.

Excursions: 11-14 February: although a Sunwest tour, several

members were on the bus for the four day trip to the NW Flower and Garden Show in Seattle. It was also an occasion to promote the garden club.

4 May: car pool trip to Summerland Ornamental Gar-dens’ plant sale

26 May: car pool trip to Dan Bruce’s Winfield garden to see his peonies

12 June: second car pool trip to Dan Bruce’s garden to see his roses

19 June: bus trip that called in at Dogwood Nursery, Dirty Laundry Winery (for the view, their small dry land garden, and some tasting), Grasslands Nursery (Toni Boot gave an impromptu talk on square foot gardening), lunch at Liquidity Winery (where the landscaping was developed by Ken Hayter of Linden Gardens), ice cream at Tickleberry’s, and a final stop at Penticton's lakeside Xeriscape Garden

Also of interest: March: spent the day at Seedy Saturday, promoting the

Kelowna Garden Club April: attended the SIHA meeting in Vernon with

Doreen Morash, Mary Wegner and Marianna Boda April: ferried plants and coffee for volunteers to Spring

Plant Sale. July: all day at the Annual Flower Show starting with

delivery of registrations signs and coffee for volun-teers and ending with clean up.

Attended general meetings and meetings of the Executive Committee.

Treasurer Report

Lynda MacDonald

I have maintained the Garden Club financial records which are in order. A full report will appear early in the New Year.

2014 Past President’s Report Linda Edser

As Past President I have attended as many executive meetings as I could in a

non-voting and advisory capacity.

I also had the pleasure of being a co-coordinator with Alicja Paradzik and

Pat Zander of the annual plant sale in April and have represented our

President and the Kelowna Garden Club at the Southern Interior

Horticultural Association in Enderby with Alicja Paradzik.

2014 Publicity director’s report Sue Bannerman

I took over the role of Publicity Director in April of this year. I’d like to thank Dorothy Robison for staying on an additional month as Publicity Director to cover for me while I was out of the country. Dorothy has been a supportive mentor and guide as I’ve learned this new role. Garden Club publicity has been divided into two parts: publicity for our monthly meetings and guest speakers and publicity for special events. I have maintained and added to the list of monthly contacts for our meetings and guest speakers. This includes websites, newspapers, libraries, newsletters, individuals and Gardens West. Connections with OXA, the Orchid Club, the Floral Art Society of BC and Friends of the Garden (FOG) in Summerland have been established with reciprocal information and publicity for special events being shared via newsletters. I’ve attended executive meetings as well as sat on committees to develop and

provide publicity for special events such as: the KGC Plant sale, special guest

speaker Sara Williams and the Juried Flower Show at Guisachan Gardens.

Through networking with OXA and FOG, the garden community of the

Okanagan was able to enjoy Sara Williams at several events while she was here. In

July, an article on the history of the KGC Juried Flower show was accepted and

published in Gardens West e-bulletin. Our local newspaper ran a shorter version

of the article at the same time. I have appreciated all suggestions and feedback on

ways to expand publicity for the KGC and will continue to search out new ave-

Assistant Report –2014 Jean Dangerfield Door Prizes: For the past three years I have had the pleasure of providing the Door Prizes for the monthly meetings of the Kelowna Garden Club. I have really loved doing the door prizes and always enjoyed sharing the product of my garden as well as finding as many treasures as I could to make the door prizes an exciting part of the meeting. I have prepared about 25 prizes for the Raffle at the June Picnic for the past three years. Many people have very generously donated items for me to include in the prizes. We have ten meetings per year and I have a budget of $200 which allows me about $20.00 per meeting. This works very well for me and allows some flexibility in the cost of door prizes. The Picnic Raffle pretty much covers the cost of the prizes. Photographer: As photographer, I have taken pictures of all of the Parlour Shows and Trophy Presentations, and as many

events and excursions as possible. I have selected photos to put on the Photo Board and provided the Weeders Digest Editor

with pictures for the monthly issues, as well as providing photos for the Power Point Slide Presentation in November. This

job has been very rewarding and I have enjoyed all the aspects of photography, editing, and presentation.

It has been very rewarding to promote the KGC again this year at the numerous events I was involved in as a volunteer and citizen.

2014 Advertising Director’s Report Alicja Paradzik

Our Newsletter readers once again enjoyed the support via advertisements from our loyal vendors. Although the number of advertisers has decreased, we still made a profit for the club. Let us make a good effort to support our advertisers. Each of us should let our advertisers know when shopping, that you are there because of their advertising in our newsletter. They need to know that their advertising dollar is being well spent in supporting the Kelowna Garden Club.

Library reminder

Don’t forget to have a look at our collection of

books and magazines at each meeting-there are many from

which to chose .

Please return your library book loans!

Special Thanks To Jean Dangerfield and Marianna Boda for taking pic-tures at every opportunity for the Garden Club. To Jean for maintaining the Photo Board. Bravo! To Marianna for maintaining the library

2014 Plant sales report Alicja Paradzik

What a terrific group of volunteers we have. They battled the weather (which was cold, windy and threatened rain all day) and the result ..... a very success-ful Spring Plant Sale! The plant donations were great. We had a good variety of all types of plants and attendance was excellent. All and all a grand success. Our fall bulb sale was also a hit and once again, we made a tidy sum . Thank you to everyone who participated in these events. Well done!

Greeters Report 2014

A major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, marking one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies progressively filled the Tower's famous moat from August 5 to November 11 2014. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. The poppies encircled the iconic landmark, creating not only a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower but also a location for personal reflection. The scale of the installation was intended to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary creating a powerful visual commemoration.

The sale of all of the poppies that make up the installation should raise millions of pounds which will be shared equally amongst six service charities. Information excerpted from website https://poppies.hrp.org.uk

Photos submitted by Rosie Lawrence September 2014

Editor’s note: I have purchased one of these poppies and I shall bring to KGC when I receive it RB.

2014 parlour SHOW director’s REPORT Brenda Smith

The KGC Parlour Show continues to produce some outstanding exhibits each month. Thank you to all those exhibitors with their prize blooms and arrangements for brightening our evenings. Thanks also to the judges from the membership who have offered their services. Each month the show consists of five or six different classes and the entire list for the year is published in the March newsletter. A list is also repeated each month for the upcoming show in the current newsletter. Numerous trophies and cups are available to win throughout the year for certain specific classes and the list of winners is also published each month in the newsletter. The Parlour Show runs from March through to November, excluding August when there is no KGC meeting. In July there is a picnic for members and guests with cash prizes for table centres and pic-nic hat decoration along with the regular Parlour Show. However, because of the early start to summer this year no suitable plant material was available for the classes of the July Parlour Show. In December, at the Christmas Party, fur-ther cash prizes are awarded for table centre decorations along with the KGC Aggregate Trophy for the member with the most points from the year’s Parlour Shows.

Congratulations to this year’s trophy winners: Judy Runzer, Evelyn and Ernie Burnett Trophy donated by Don Burnett Doreen Morash, Challenge Cup for Peonies Bev Akerlund, Iris Trophy in memory of Alex Rudy Alicja Paradzik, Lillian Jeffries Rose Trophy Etta Scotter, Dahlia Cup donated by Kelowna and District Horticultural Society,

From Sue Bannerman

Do you have problems with losing soil out the drainage holes every time you water your potted plants? Here’s a tip for you:

Place a coffee filter in the bottom of your pots before adding the soil. This will keep the soil from washing out through the drainage holes

but will allow the water to pass through easily.
