Minnesota Suicide Statistics New figures show Minnesota’s suicide rate has jumped in recent years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released figures on suicide rates across the U.S. According to the report, the suicide rate in Minnesota jumped 40.6 percent over 18 years. Between 1999 and 2016, suicide rates in Minnesota increased across age, sex and racial groups. But the Star Tribune reports that lately the rates have been going up the most in rural parts of Minnesota. In 2016, 745 suicides were reported in Minnesota. That continues a trend that began after 2010 when the number of suicides was 606. The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides. The report finds nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide in 2016.

New Safe routes to School Plan (SRTS) Adopted

VISION: The City of Hawley seeks to become a community where it is safe and convenient for all its children to walk and bicycle to school, where our children can travel, explore and play in their community safety under their own power, and where they learn life-long habits of incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. We will seek to achieve this vision through safety awareness, education, encouragement and self-evaluation, all while building the infrastructure needed to make walking and bicycling safer and more convenient for all.

GOALS: #1 Create designated safe routes to school;

#2 Expand the sidewalk system within the city;

#3 Incorporate curriculum into the school day to teach children safe walking and bicycling;

#4 Sponsor a bike rodeo;

#5 Educate drivers about the need to drive at safe speeds and how to properly interact with bicyclists and pedestrians;

#6 Enforce safe behaviors of drivers by working with law enforcement; and #7 Create an environment within the public right of way that is more conductive to safe walking and bicycling, including those with mobility disadvantages.

Check out the Entire Plan: www.hawley-govoffice.com under the City Information tab.

Who: Esther’s Hair Salon Where: 327 6th Street Contact: 218-483-4735

Esther’s Salon was started in my home on 6th St. when an addition was added for me to operate out of. I remained there for approximately 32 years. I have been at my current location for 9 years in downtown Hawley, 327 6th Street (white picket fence.)

It has been a joy to be in business in Hawley. I have had and still have wonderful clients. Many of my clients have left the area and still come back from a long distance to visit and have their hair done.

I do haircuts (children, teens, men, and women), colors, perms, and long or short hair. I have been very blessed to be in business this long and I appreciate all my clients - they are wonderful! The Lord is good! B
