PAGE 3

The last six months have seen several significantvisitors and many sizable changes to IVHQ.

The United States Department of VeteransAffairs sent a team to review our water managementprograms and policies in September. This was a four-day investigation of the processes we use to mitigatebacteria in our water supply. They also reviewed thecorrective steps that have been taken since 2015.These were very knowledgeable individuals and theyprovided great input on how we could improve ouroperations. The resulting recommendations from thisteam indicated a very high-level confidence with thesteps that have been taken by our staff and manage-ment team. They also expressed confidence in ourknowledge level and they encouraged us to becomemore autonomous with our investigative process andsubsequent procedures in analyzing data. Their voteof confidence is a real boost to the work that has beendone!

IVHQ has had a significant addition to our cam-pus with the purchase and renovation of what wasformally called the Sycamore Healthcare Center.Though the building is not physically located on ourgrounds, it is still considered a part of our campus. With the appropriation of $53 million in June,Governor Bruce Rauner commissioned four newessential projects affecting IVHQ.

First was the purchase and remodel of Sycamoreas a transitional housing unit for our veterans. Theremodel is being completed by River CityConstruction out of Peoria. There is a hard deadlineof December 31st to have the structure renovated andcompleted. Hence River City and their subcontractorsare working 24-hours a day remodeling the structure. It has been amazing to see the changes from one dayto the next.

During a ceremony on October 19th, GovernorRauner revealed the new name of the facility asLester Hammond Hall. The family of Medal of Honorrecipient Corporal Lester Hammond, Jr. was presentfor the ceremony. (See the front cover and more infor-mation about CPL Lester Hammond, Jr. on page #9.)

The appropriated $53 million also initiated amaster planning process with HOK ArchitecturalFirm out of Chicago. This is a six-month comprehen-sive architectural design plan for the entire IVHQ

campus. In brief, the plan includes conceptualideations on the future layout of the campus thatinclude building locations, street changes, electricallayout, water runoff, and many other factors thathelp make up the overall concept. A tangible sign ofthis plan and progress was the demolition of theRowland building.

Rowland was the old carpentry shop locatedbehind Kent Hall. The building had been vacant fornearly two decades and it laid in what will likely bethe footprint of future construction. It was amazingyet reflective to watch the nearly 100-year-old build-ing reduced to lot space. Further demolition is slatedto happen next spring and summer.

The HOK plan is in the final stages to be com-pleted in late November or December.

And finally as we approach the 100th anniver-sary to the end of World War I on Veterans Day, I findit fitting to highlight the Illinois BicentennialCelebration recognizing 200 veterans from across thestate of Illinois who are making a difference. We areblessed to have four of those 200 in our area and twoof them, American Legion volunteer Roger Schwengaland IVHQ Adjutant Dawn Whitcomb, have close tiesto our Home. (Larry Perrine and Joseph Fanning arethe other two.) The four will be recognized for theirduty to both the community and their country inChicago later this month. We congratulate all fourbut especially, Roger and Dawn!

ILLINOIS VETERANS HOME AT QUINCY

WISH LISTIf you or your organization are interested in funding a portion or an entire project, simply contactAdministrator Troy Culbertson at (217) 222-8641, ext. #202 or Director of Marketing RickGengenbacher at ext. #380. All contributions, no matter the size, will be noted in the Bugle withthe Wish List. These items will remain on the list until we have received enough funds to purchasethem. New items will be added from time to time. (Checks should be made payable to the IllinoisVeterans Home . Please write the name of the project you wish to adopt in the memo note.) THISLIST IS IN PRIORITY ORDER. As always, thank you for your time and consideration.

NEW WISH LIST ITEM...REQUESTED: A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR EACH RESIDENTREASON: This past Christmas we once again provided a Christmas Gift for every IVHQ resident - an IVHQ

calander with 12 beautiful pictures from around the campus. You can help replenish this fund sowe can continue this great tradition in 2018 and beyond.

PRICE: $15.00 will sponsor one resident. ( We currently have nearly 380 residents.)

REQUESTED: BLANKET WARMERREASON: IVHQ is interested in purchasing four warming units that surround the blankets with safe, full-

wall warmth just prior to being used by residents. Warm blankets provide a person with calm-ness, comfort and peace of mind. Something as simple as covering someone with a warm blankethas been shown to provide not only physical benefits such as reducing surgical site infections andaiding in the recovery process, but also psychological benefits such as reducing anxiety and stress.Additionally, the units can assist with keeping residents warm during transport to the hospital, doctor appointments, or Radiology on a cool morning and improve resident satisfaction with thebathing experience.

PRICE: $3,000 each, requesting three (We have purchased one already!)

REQUESTED: PERMANENT SHELTER FOR SUNSET CEMETERYREASON: IVHQ is looking to erect a permanent shelter in Sunset Cemetery that will be used for during the

many burial services (veterans from IVHQ as well as eligible veterans from the community) atSunset. Currently a tent is put up and taken down each time. The thought on this project is toerect a permanent, open-air, structure that we can attached three sides to during inclement weather.

PRICE: To be determined.

IMPORTANT NEWS RE ThE RESIdENT BENEfIT (AcTIvITES) fuNdWe are most grateful for every donation we receive to the Wish List but especially donations to theResident Benefit Fund or commonly called Activities Fund. With that said, we are concerned that ourdonations to this fund, for what ever reason, have dropped by nearly 50% in 2018. We are concerned withthis because every planned resident activity is paid for with this fund; there are no taxpayer funds allotedfor activities. We are currently reevaluating everything we do but should this trend continue, we will beforced to curtail resident activites in the future. Again, thank you for your generosity.
