Sand Soldiers of America is a non-profit organization founded by Pasco Sheriff Bob White, who wanted to find a way to help young Veterans returning from tours of duty overseas in Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He along with other law enforcement officials across the state of Florida, had deputies who constituted “young Veterans.”

Sheriff White’s efforts were noticed by a small group of older Veterans in the area who easily recognized that young troops were not comfortable at the local VFW’s and American Legions because of the generation gap between them and the World War II, and Vietnam Veterans. Shortly after the inception, Tim Howells, a Pasco County CPA, and the law firm of Lucas, Green & Magazine, joined in the efforts. They met consistently beginning in 2009, and gradually formed “Sand Soldiers of America.”

A reunion was their first major event and consisted of a Military Parade to recognize the Sand Soldiers’ service to America. Upon acceptance by the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, their first reunion was held in conjunction with the Cotee River Bikefest in New Port Richey, which was already established. The first annual reunion and recognition event was a huge success!

The focus of Sand Soldiers organization is “Employment Empowerment” for Veterans. Job placement is important in integrating young Veterans back into the American workplace. Considering the employment challenges throughout the country over the last few years, it is not an easy task. However with corporations getting involved to assist Sand Soldiers, the goal becomes reality!

“Job Placement is a big thing. Encouraging companies to give an extra look at a resume of someone who has served our country is crucial to the success of employment empowerment,” said attorney Jeff Lucas, of Lucas, Green & Magazine.

It is also of the utmost importance for companies to assist Sand Soldiers with job referrals, housing, car loans, gas cards, utility payments, food, and transportation. Yvette Behmer, Community Events Coordinator for Sand Soldiers of America, said, “The gratification is seeing the look on a young Veteran’s face while thanking them for their service. The appreciation they exude because we have helped them and met their needs is priceless. It truly changes their lives forever. No one who has knocked on the door thus far has been turned away!”

The Sand Soldiers organization grieves lives lost with the families of Veterans, and welcomes soldiers home at the airport. By consistently maintaining a presence through honor and recognition of our beloved heroes, Sand Soldiers raises the level of patriotism in our community and our country, because Americans should never forget the sacrifices of the men, women and families of the United States Armed Forces. Troops have fought and paid the ultimate price for our freedoms and liberties, and they deserve our utmost respect and appreciation.

Sand Soldiers of America is a volunteer-based organization, with funds generously donated by corporate sponsors, businesses, individual donations, community functions, and dinners.

One of the most significant goals of the Sand Soldiers of America is the integration, growth and development of nationwide resources designed specifically for young Veterans, in a way that speaks volumes to them and their generation through music, technology, health and family.

Current resources provided or sourced out locally and domestically include job referrals, home placement, mental health referrals, food assistance, gas cards (based on availability, electric bill referral, homeless & ER placement, airport welcomes , family support during spousal deployment, care package programs and more!

For more information about Sand Soldiers of America, for job referrals, resource donations, or to donate your time as a volunteer, visit www.sandsoldiersofamerica.org.

Joe Pagano was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War, as was protocol in the 1960 era. He was stationed overseas in Germany, and the army put him through aviation training, which he embraced! He considered himself fortunate to be able to serve in a capacity he loved: working with aircraft. Upon graduation, he became a Crew Chief of L-20 aircraft. He checked them, repaired them and actually soared across foreign skies within them!

When he returned to his home in Massapequa, New York, he learned his father’s business: upholstery. Over time, he became a master upholsterer, and today, as the patriarch of Sunshine Upholstery in Tarpon Springs, he takes on interior and exterior upholstery challenges with ease, expertise and exquisite beauty!

Interior projects may include anything from barstools, to chairs, headboards to sofas. Each is unique in design, simply in need of an update in fabric, color or texture. Exterior assignments prove a bit more challenging, depending upon the level of deterioration.

“UV rays and weather conditions can destroy outdoor cushions by fading the colors, weakening the fabric and inviting mold and bacteria to infest and multiply due to the humid climate,” Joe explains.

He recently accepted an exceptional challenge: to reupholster outdoor cushions from a home on the river, which had been badly abused by the elements.

The before and after photos are astounding! Joe and his son, Dean, took drab, disgusting cushions and completely refurbished them with new foam, vibrant fabric and intricate detail. What was a once a pitiful patio, became an outstanding oasis, ready for entertaining!

Before your next backyard barbeque or outdoor soiree, examine your exterior furnishings for damage, fading or fashion faux pas, and call Joe & Dean Pagano at Sunshine Upholstery to transform your patio into your oasis!

Gary & Karen Amundson of Massage Therapy Center of Florida

The life of a man consists not in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active charity and in willing service. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Service. That is the epitome of Karen & Gary Amundson, owners of Massage Therapy Center of Florida, in Trinity. This power-couple has demonstrated time and again the importance and satisfaction of devoting time and service to ones country, community and clients!

Service to CountryGary was drafted to serve his country during the Viet Nam War in the 1960’s. His Father, and 11 of his 16 Uncles, chose to enlist in the United States Armed forces immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. His Dad and a few of his Uncles joined the Navy. The others became members of the Army. Gary admits, “I have always been proud that they served and was always thankful that they all returned from the war.”

Unfortunately, many do not return to their families, while others return injured--their lives never to be the same again.

“We take for granted the life we have here because we don’t have foreign troops coming through our backyards with weapons drawn and ready to fire on the first thing that moves,” Gary explains. In as much as he and so many others wish wars never took place, the reality is there are people and groups that terrorize and victimize innocent people every day. It takes the strong, brave men and women of the US Armed Forces to fight these battles on behalf of the American people. Gary proudly states, “I am proud to have served my country when I was called. We do need, as a nation, to stand behind our military and give them the equipment they need to do the job, and the respect for the job they have to do. God Bless America, and God Bless Our Military.”

Service to CommunityProud to be Americans and Rotarians, Karen & Gary are both active, with Gary being a member of the Rotary Club of New Port Richey. Why shouldn’t they be? The Rotary consists of members of kindred spirits. After all, their motto reflects

that of the Amundson’s: “Service Above Self.” This New Port Richey service organization is one of the largest in the district, sustained for more than 50 years. They have managed to raise significant net funds to help numerous causes throughout the community.

For many years, Gary served on the Board of Directors of the Good Samaritan Clinic. He was part of a team in helping those who had fallen between the cracks of our health care system, regain their health. Patients are examined by volunteer physicians and health care professionals. The Clinic continues to grow, thanks to the management team and the many volunteers!

A long time volunteer, Gary became chairman of the Odessa Rodeo in 1995. He and Karen eventually started the Odessa Rodeo Clown Krewe, still in existence today. The satisfaction they experience from seeing the beautiful smiles on the faces of the children they entertain is unsurpassed!

For more than two decades, the Amundsons feel blessed to have served others in the community. Their hope is that everyone will participate in an organization which makes positive differences in the lives of others.

Service to ClientsGary & Karen’s primary mission of their business is to help people. Massage Therapy Center of Florida, specializes in therapeutic massage and rejuvenating techniques, for the natural relief of pain due to auto accidents, workers compensation injuries, fibromyalgia, pinched nerves, stress, and more. There may be no better way to serve your clients, than by the reduction of stress and tension!

From the management and staff of It’s Your Home Magazine, we salute Gary and Karen Amundson for their service and commitment to Country and Community!

Tampa-Serving Dealership Sun Toyota Donates 2012 Toyota Tundra to Local HeroSun Toyota, a locally owned and operated new and used Toyota dealership honored the service of double amputee Lance Corporal Justin Gaertner by providing a specially-outfitted 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited 4x4. Justin Gaertner of Trinity was given the keys during a special Memorial Day event.

Lance Corporal Justin Gaertner lost his legs on the day after Thanksgiving in 2010 while defending his country’s freedom. Sun Toyota is hoping to restore some of his mobility by putting him behind the wheel of his very own 2012 Toyota Tundra.

On the morning of Monday, May 28, the Florida Patriot Guard Riders provided Gaertner with a special escort to the Sun Toyota dealership at 3001 US Highway 19 in Holiday, Florida. There, he received the keys to his 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax Limited 4x4 full-size pickup truck.

Equipped with hand controls and step bars, the specially-outfitted Toyota Tundra has been designed so that Gaertner can operate it with ease. He walks with the aid of two prosthetic legs.

Throughout his recovery and rehabilitation, Gaertner astounded everyone with his work ethic and the progress he made. Initially, he thought it would be a year until he could walk again. He was back on his feet within four months.

Sun Toyota has been raising money on behalf of Gaertner since last month’s Fun n’ Sun Toyota Country Concert. The dealership printed t-shirts and gave them away in exchange for donations. Customers and local supporters have also been donating money on Sun Toyota’s Facebook page, where Gaertner’s mother expressed her appreciation for the efforts.

Most nutritionists agree that most diets are really just a quick fix with major flaws, and that the key to losing weight is to adopt a lifestyle of healthy eating and regular exercise.

Most diets fail because they are by definition a ‘short term fix’ that includes drastic changes to your normal eating habits. They certainly don’t enable you to develop a healthy HABIT of eating better. You’ll follow some extremely strict eating plan for a couple of weeks, and the minute you return to your old eating habits you regain the weight.

Quick fix diets often leave you tired, and hungry. They are often simply too low in calories, or restrict food groups, leaving you nutrient deficient. Because they don't provide enough energy for you to do your workouts and accomplish everything else you need to do in a day, they're a short-term solution at best.

In the worst case scenario, calorie restrictive diets can cause your body burn your muscle for fuel. You may shed a few pounds in the short run, but you'll also lose muscle and lower your metabolism. This is the classic yo-yo diet scenario, and unfortunately it’s what people often think of when they hear the word ‘diet’. With the rise of extremely calorie restrictive ‘plans’, juice diets, cleanses and the like, people take it to the extreme, then regain all their weight and then some.

A truly healthy, life changing ‘diet’ is going to be something that easily incorporates into your lifestyle and help you to create lifelong healthy habits. It MUST have a nutrients balance that includes enough protein to maintain your lean muscle while you drop fat. Ultimately, it’s the steady incorporation of new healthy foods and portions, and the elimination of junk and overeating that leads to weight loss success.

Nutritionists agree that starting the day with a protein shake is an excellent way to boost your metabolism and to get the protein you need to maintain muscle mass. For the rest of the day, eating ‘lean and green’ is the key! That is a meal plan that is centered around lean protein and vegetables with limited grains and starches. Think of your new healthy lifestyle as adding new delicious foods to your life, rather than restricting what you can no longer have on a regular basis. Over time, you may find that you no longer desire to eat the less healthy foods you ate in the past. Now, you have successfully changed your ‘diet’, for a lifetime of good health!

What serious golfer would even think he or she could learn golf ti ps from someone who has never picked up a golf club in their life, let alone a martial artist? The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes.

Grand Master, Dennis Kelly, five-time World Martial Arts Champion, author of The Six Steps to the Fountain of Youth, has proven that the secrets to his championships in one sport can and will affect other sports He introduced his Master Warrior Golf peak performance program earlier this year to a pilot study group of golfers at Crescent Oaks Golf & Country Club, achieving a 100% success rate.

Over time, Kelly discovered his student golfers had noticed overall improvements in their games. They were hitting the ball further and observing increases in balance and coordination, with advancements in strength and flexibility.

In an effort to understand how this was working, Kelly took a breakdown approach to his class, deciding to put together a program designed specifically for golfers, with added miraculous side benefits to their game of life!”

After the initial six-week pilot study at Crescent Oaks, the results were in! Every testimonial went beyond expectations:

These exercises taught me to relax more on the course and to better visualize each of my golf shots. The bottom line is that my golf game is improving and my handicap is going down! Joan U.

DEFYING AGE

“MASTER WARRIOR GOLF”I continue to practice the lessons of Dynamic Fusion, as well as the brain exercises. It has improved my focus and ability to maintain a positive attitude, and it has given me strength to hit the ball further. My handicap dropped dramatically and remains! Kay T.

After such enthusiasm from the golfers and the Crescent Oaks staff, Master Warrior Golf is now OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, with the support of Eric Lavigne, who offers a complimentary golf clinic, and a free round of golf, by General Manager Jerry Couzynse. Cost is $29.00 members, $49.00 non-members, and is GUARANTEED TO IMPROVE ONES GAME, provided the principles and concepts are applied.

The next workshop is scheduled for June 28, 3-5 PM, at Crescent Oaks Golf & Country Club. Future workshops are in the works for Master Warrior Golf levels I, II, & III. For more info call: 727-945-9223, or go to www.masterwarriorgolf.com

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of “Trinity, he has fought” our country’s battles in the air, on land and sea.

That is not the exact recitation of the famous Marine fight song, but Devin McWilliams, Corporal in the United States Marine Corp, has returned home to Trinity to continue serving in his Father’s business, McWilliams and Son Air Conditioning, after two tours of duty overseas in Iraq (2009) and Afghanistan (2010-11), and four years of service to our country.

Devin decided to join the armed forces to learn how to take care of himself without being handed everything in life. He joined the ranks of the Marine Corp over the other branches because of the sense of brotherhood he recognized. “You can’t be an Army, Navy or Air Force, but you will always be a Marine,” he states proudly.

Serving in the USMC gave Devin an opportunity to see war-ravaged areas of the world first-hand that most Americans only see depicted through news clips. He has an immense sense of

pride whenever he sees the American flag which represents so many freedoms and liberties unknown throughout the world. “You can’t be anything but proud of any man or woman who makes the decision to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the country and family that they love,” boasts Devin’s Mom, Julie McWilliams, owner of Planet Beach New Port Richey, and the new Planet Beach Riverview.

The McWilliams’ are thrilled to have their son back home, and as the new, young mind within McWilliam’s and Son A/C, they have seen Devin embrace the business and bring a fresh vision with creative ideas to propel the company to new heights.

Julie shares, “I’ve never had such a feeling of pride each time I look at my son and know the things he has endured during his service to our country. Our son left a boy, but returned so much more of a man than I had hoped he would be.”

Welcome Home Devin! We thank you for protecting us and for Serving our Country.

As Independence Day approaches, Americans make plans to vacation, attend sporting events, congregate on beaches, sail out on the waters and host barbeques complete with fireworks. This is all made possible thanks to people like Laura Dawson, and the tens of thousands of others who have served and are serving in the United States Armed Forces. They put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms and liberties each and every day!

A mother of six, President of Best Services Air Conditioning and Heating, and an E5 in the US Naval Reserve, Laura recently returned from her second tour of duty overseas, where she and her fellow troops provided security for Navy ships in port and aboard a USNS refueling ship in the waters of the Middle East.

Laura chose to serve when she was 17 years-old, because she wanted to be part of securing our country’s freedoms and liberties. “When I was young,” Laura explains, “I was in awe of those in the military and thought it was such a noble profession.”

Her family recognizes that nobility and sense of pride, as well. Husband, Bill Dawson, has offered unwaivering support and stability for their family while Laura has served overseas. In fact,

two of their six children have chosen to follow in their mother’s footsteps.

Their daughter, Becky, is a Mitchell High School graduate, Class of 2011. She earned “Cadet of the Year” honors for her success in the ROTC program, where she was an Executive officer. She was also awarded a US Navy ROTC, four-year scholarship and is currently attending Old Dominion University. Upon graduation, she plans to enter the Navy as a Commissioned Officer and a Registered Nurse.

Son, Lance, is in the Class of 2015, at Anclote High School, and one day aspires to be a Marine Biologist.

Laura admits, “I am very proud that my children are following in my footsteps for the simple fact that I know as long as we keep someone on watch, we will have our freedom. With most things in life you get out what you put in. The same applies to the Military. Anyone that chooses that path can do well and be proud of doing it.”

Brake Chatter or Pulsation?AUTO KNOW

You Asked:I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with almost 67,000 miles. When coming to a stop, I am experiencing a pulsation on the brake pedal! Is this normal after so many miles or is there something wrong with the brakes of my car? How do I know when to replace them?

Five Star Auto Answered:

Brake chatter or brake pedal pulsation is usually caused by one of three things, out of round rotors, loose or worn components, or glazed linings. Although there may be no particular noise from the front or rear brakes, the brake pads may need to be replaced or the brake rotors might need to be shaved. If the brakes are out of specified thickness, this is a signal that they may need to be replaced. Your auto technician has to make sure that the caliper slides are also free.

The best way to avoid any doubts, have your auto technician at your local repair shop road- test your car, then, follow his or her advice. Stay Safe!

Contact Our Hometown Professional, Five Star Auto for more information at 727-942-2733. From the infamous words of an honest and great mechanic, George Bouris, ” Remember! You can schedule maintenance but you can’t schedule repairs!”

1) With a 20% down payment, a 15-year fixed-rate loan for $100,000 with a rate of 4.50%(4.669% APR) would be repaid in 180 payments (principal and interest) of $765 each.2) With a 20% down payment, a 3/3 adjustable rate mortgage for $100,000 with an introductory rate of 4.00% would be repaid for the first 36 months in payments (principal and interest) of $478 each. (APR after the 36 month introductory period will be variable and may be subject to increase). Variable APRs shown are the best available for the initial fixed rate period of 3 or 5 years only. After the initial fixed-rate period, your variable APR will be based on the movement of the Treasury Security Index for a comparable maturity as the ARM program selected plus a margin determined by your credit qualification. Your qualifying margin over the index is determined at the time you lock-in your final rate. The variable rate and APR may adjust up or down with a CAP limitation not to exceed 2% for any one change. The maximum increase or decrease in percentage points for the term of the loan is 6%. However, the rate on your loan will never decrease lower than the margin. A change cannot occur more than once every 36 months for the 3/3 ARM and once every 60 months for the 5/5 ARM. An increase in rate would represent an increase of your monthly payments. Property insurance is required.

Tax TIPS 2012 money matters

TWO DANGEROUS TRENDS IN FRAUDULENT IRS SCAMS TO BEWARE OF

By Todd Unbehagen, MAFM, EA, ATA, ATP, President, Unbehagen Advisors

Our tax team prepares hundreds of individual and business income tax returns each year. We are in the front lines, educating our clients, and helping them through the recent IRS identity theft scams and tax fraud phishing scams that have been affecting many people in the area. The top two of these “IRS Dirty Dozen” tax scams for 2012, as published by the IRS annually, are #1 identity theft, and #2 phishing.

As you may have seen in the local news there has been an ever increasing epidemic in our area of people stealing social security numbers, bank account information, and other personal information in order to file false, and fraudulent, income tax returns, and fraudulently receive a tax refund. Currently, local police, and the federal government, have had a very difficult time identifying these criminals, and prosecuting them.

When these false tax returns are filed with stolen identity information, a refund is generated based upon bogusly concocted income and withholding amounts. The refunds are then direct deposited to the thief’s preloaded debit card account. It is only when the real taxpayer, after this fraud has been committed, e-files their tax return and receives a response that their return has already been filed, that they realize that their information has been stolen. The problem has increased so rapidly that beginning this year, if someone files a false tax return with your information, the IRS added an “Identity Theft Affidavit” (Form 14039) to mail in with proof of your identity. This tax

form was added so that you are able to receive your rightful refund, and prove that it is in fact your return that should be filed.

One of the many ways identity theft can happen is through phishing. One way phishing occurs is when a thief emails, or calls, a person claiming to be the IRS, and they are requesting information about you. First, they claim that they are the IRS, and that there is a refund for you in their system waiting to be sent to you. They state that they need to verify information so that they can release it to you. To verify that information, they state that they need social security numbers, addresses and bank account information. If you give them this information they now can use it to steal money from your accounts, file false returns, etc.

The IRS never calls, nor emails, taxpayers for basic information like this. The IRS follows specific protocol, which is to mail letters to taxpayers requesting information. The addresses on the letters can be verified by going to the IRS website, or speaking to your tax professional. Do not ever respond to someone claiming to be the IRS, and request that they put their request in writing and mail it to your address on file. Or call your tax professional for guidance immediately.

We keep up with these issues to protect, educate, and serve our clients in this new digital environment. This is one of the many reasons to use a tax preparation firm that is proactive and up to date with the many issues pertaining to the IRS, both internally and externally. Our team looks forward to preparing your tax returns, and we are here all year long to help if any questions or IRS related concerns arise. This is the case even if the problem is from an unfortunate event as described above.

RICHARD SCHERCH TECH TALK

You may not realize it, but there are supposed to be several items of information at the start of every page in your website that will tell the search engines and browsers what your web pages are all about. It is important that every page have (in web programming lingo) a title tag, a description tag and to a lesser extent, a keyword tag with a short list of relevant keywords for that page.

The title tag can have a big impact on the search engine positions of a web page. Also, the title tag and description tag are important as that is what the search engine displays in the results. So, what do you need to do? Take a look at the following suggestions. You can do this yourself, or contact us at Websitedzyn and we can perform the check-up and updates for you.

1. Review the code of each of your web pagesMake sure that you have a title tag and description tag. We see pages all the time without the tags or with multiple tags. In either case, it will be detrimental to your site when being evaluated by the search engines.

2. Use your keywords in your web page titles and descriptionsBy using content-relevant keywords for that page you will ensure that

the first thing people see will be a title and description that is accurate to the page’s content. This will be your first opportunity to capture your audience. So make it count!

3. Short Titles are the best TitlesMost search engines truncate the titles after 65-70 characters on the search result pages. Therefore, make sure that you create a short effective title. There is no hard and fast rule for the title length, but by keeping it to 70 characters (which includes spaces); your important title information will always be seen.

4. Make sure your description is “Descriptive”Again as with the title tag, the description tag is truncated at 155-160, characters by most search engines. An accurate, content -relevant description that uses some of your keywords is a must. This text will be shown in the search engine results and will be used by the potential visitor as a means of filtering the usefulness of your site in their search.

5. Make your title tags and description tags uniqueEvery page should have a unique title tag and description tag that reflects the content of the web page. It is a good idea to use a different set of your targeted keywords on each of the pages. This will take some time and planning but will be worth your effort.

What are Cash Mobs? The general idea is to encourage people to go into small, local businesses and spend their money, en masse, to give the business owner a little bit of economic stimulus. We’d help businesses grow, we’d make people happy, we’d get stuff for ourselves, have a great time, and maybe we’d get a drink or bite to eat to celebrate afterward. Make new friends in the process and share a little bit about ourselves and our own employment with others.

**The original “Cash Mobs” started in 2011 in Cleveland, OH and Buffalo, NY. Since then, Cash Mobs have been sprouting up all across the U.S., Canada, and around the world. While organized by many different groups of people, all appear to have the same goal in mind: to support local businesses that they love!

Taylor MADE IN WEST TAMPA BAY

books, art, culture

Golf as I Know ItWith more than 1,250 golf courses in the state, it is no wonder golf is a significant element of Florida culture!I do not have a golf handicap. Truth be known, I’ve never played a day in my life outside of putt-putt, or a short chipping lesson. Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed the sport on various levels over the course of my life, and today, I can honestly say, I may not play, but I have some amazing memories that have absolutely nothing to do with Tiger Woods!

I will always remember watching the Master’s Tournaments in April with my Dad & Mom, and my Paternal Grandmother, Margaret Taylor, on one of only four channels we could tune into on television: WHAS 11-CBS. I loved Fuzzy Zoeller, and Jack Nicholas, and Grandma loved Gary Player. I remember how she would practically swoon when she watched him play!

I was blessed to have met Mr. Player when I worked at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington, KY, as a bartender/cocktail waitress/golf cart girl. At the time, I was also a journalism student in a sports journalism class at Eastern Kentucky University, and I possessed a press pass. It wasn’t as glamorous as it sounds, believe me. I actually was serving as a cocktail waitress (probably a more glamorous position), when I met Mr. Player, and he was as genuine as I had witnessed on television. I told him about my Grandmother’s endearment to him, and he graciously offered an autograph and many kind words for Grandma. Unfortunately, she was in the depths of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and breast cancer, in a nursing home, oblivious to her surroundings. It still meant a great deal to me that he was so kind and compassionate. No wonder Grandma loved him so much!

During the same Seniors Tournament, I was assigned to interview Doug Sanders, a colorful golfer whose claim to fame was his extensive array of golf shoes! He owned hundreds of pairs in practically every color and style! He was certainly a flashy fellow on the tour and in conversation, and I thoroughly enjoyed our interview!

Another of my favorites was Billy Casper. He was a character I will never forget! His personality was as vibrant as the knickers he was known for sporting in every tournament! He had a wonderful sense of humor, and he, like Player and Sanders, was very accommodating to this young “sports reporter”.

I can drive a golf cart like a pro, but that’s the very end of any comparison. I learned to quietly cruise around a golf course, using cart paths whenever possible. I served snacks and beverages to parched and hungry golfers, while simultaneously, not interfering with their game.

I cherish these precious memories, and I appreciate golf as a sport requiring respect for others, precise technique, and clear concentration to achieve success. Perhaps one day I will actually learn to drive a golf ball and complete a full round. However, if I never do, I will always love and respect the game, and I will always enjoy the sport!

RETRACTIONUnfortunately, I require a retraction for my retraction published in our last issue. I inadvertently used the wrong name of the brilliant photographer who generously shared her photographs for my column in the Spring Issue promoting Suncoast Waldorf School. Shannon Livingston is the amazingly talented photographer who shared her photos. Please visit her website at www.shannonlivingson.com, for more information, and/or to offer her kudos for her incredible spirit of generosity and forgiveness!

When you are the Chefs of an amazing restaurant at a prestigious golf course in West Tampa Bay, you develop luscious “Greens”, powerful “Sandwedges”, and appetizing “1st Tee Starters”. That’s exactly what Executive Chef, John Clark, and Sous Chef, James Carlson have created for their “After 5” dinner menu at Windows on the Green, Fox Hollow Golf & Country Club in Trinity.

Although their primary focus remains their children and families, these Chefs have a true passion for food. When asked what Chef John loves most about his business, he explained, “I have a passion for what I do in creating food that is not only pleasing to the palate, but to the eye as well.” Chef James finds everyday to be a new adventure! Between the two, you can expect culinary excellence through their imaginative plates, pairings, tastes and textures.

Chef John, a native of New England, fostered a fascination for food at an early age, while watching his Swedish Grandmother prepare amazing dishes. His career and experience as a Chef was cultivated through ClubCorp of America family, specifically, East Lake Woodlands and Countryside Country Clubs. ClubCorp employee partners are highly skilled and trained to provide an exceptional experience to each and every member, and Chef John maintained that same level of excellence at the Wine Cellar and Lobster Pot restaurants on the beach, and further extends to his guests at Windows on the Green.

Chef James has lived in Florida for more than two decades, and began his culinary career at the tender age of 16. “I don’t see myself ever doing anything else. I am very happy to be part of the team here at Fox Hollow,” he replied.

Each course - from their scrumptious “First Tee Starters” to their decadent “Sweet Endings” - is carefully prepared with the utmost expertise. They proudly serve only grain-fed, certified Black Angus Beef, the freshest Gulf seafood available, and produce locally

grown and marketed. Combine the fabulous diversity of flavors with the ambiance of the only restaurant in Trinity that overlooks the pristine greens of Fox Hollow, the last golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and guests always share an incredible dining experience between neighbors, friends and family!

However, sharing a savory experience with family and friends is not simply limited to guests. Chef James explains, “We have a lot of long-term employees. People get to see the same faces week to week, and it makes them feel like they are at home!”

This ‘dynamic duo of culinary delectables’, offers piquant specials each week, to keep their repeat guests coming back for more, while enticing new guests to stimulate their palate. Chef John loves the new Black & Bleu Rib Eye - 10 ounce Rib Eye Seared in a cast iron skillet and topped with creamy gorgonzola & ‘Hay Stack Onion Crisps’, and looks at it as one of his most favorite creations. Chef James is proud to prepare the pièce de resistance, Baileys Dark Chocolate Crème Brulee: dark Belgium chocolate crème custard, finished with caramelized sugar. What a delicious compliment to the other… much like these two masterful Chefs!

Appropriately, Windows on the Green is located at 10050, Robert Trent Jones Pkwy in Trinity, and is open to the public seven days a week: Sundays, 7 AM to 6 PM, Mondays, 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesdays – Fridays, 10 AM to 9 PM, and Saturdays, 7 AM to 9 PM. For reservations or more information, call 727/376-6333, or visit www.golfthefox.com.

Robert Irvine and the designers of Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible” would be proud of owners, John & Eleni Hatzistefanou of Niko’s Place Restaurant in New Port Richey, for converting their 80’s vinyl and mirrors look to a more beautiful, contemporary dining establishment, featuring new carpet, custom-made booths, fresh paint, re-texturized walls and granite counter-tops.

The transformation was a long time coming, and an arduous process, but the final results are amazing!

“John & I talked about making these costly renovations for quite a while now,” Eleni confesses. “The time finally arrived, and it was well worth the wait!”

The interior design has been escalated to new heights, and so has the energy at Niko’s Place. The staff, many of whom have been with John & Eleni for more than two decades, are also re-energized by the updates. Chef Yanni and his brother and Grill Cook, George, are working with the owners to consolidate and update the menu, keeping many of their loyal patrons’ favorites like the prime rib, choice steaks, and succulent seafood, while

adapting popular additions such as flatbreads and sliders, just to name a few.

Everything is prepared fresh daily, from the fruits and vegetable that are purchased locally from farmer’s markets, to the homemade croutons that adorn the salads! Daily specials are quite popular with the guests at Niko’s, but none so much as the half fried chicken special on Thursdays, which are hand-breaded and made to order each and every time!

John & Eleni believe the secret to their success is the genuine level of care they extend to their guests, and their daily presence to make certain everything comes out of the kitchen properly prepared and presented. Nothing is more important to them than exceeding their customers’ expectations and making sure everything comes out perfectly!

You are invited to visit the newly-renovated Niko’s Place Restaurant, six days a week (they are closed on Mondays), at 6818 US Hwy 19, New Port Richey. For more information or to reserve their banquet room for your special event, please call 727-841-8151.

"Teaching a child to swim is a necessity, NOT a luxury!"

Summer Safety………Pool Safety!Summer is just around the corner. The sun is hot, the birds are singing and your kids are itching to hit the pool. Always remember to instruct your children about summer safety to keep them healthy and happy throughout the season. Explain basic rules and pack summer essentials in a bag to protect the kids throughout the summer!

Teaching kid’s water safety is extremely important and will prevent accidents and drownings. Below are three very important tips to keep your children safe in and around the pool.

1. Talk to your children. Discuss with them what they can and can’t do in the water. Teach them to always swim with a buddy, never go near a pool without an adult present and what to do in the event of an emergency.

2. Set rules with your children. If they break a rule be prepared to make them get out of the water or ground them from the pool for a period of time. Remember, you’re protecting them and teaching them water safety!

3. Enroll your child in swimming lessons. The Katelyn Foundation offers swim lessons throughout the summer season (group or private) at your house or mine. Remember, while having a child take swim lessons is no guarantee of water safety, it does give children a leg up making them more water safe.

Ramblin Rhodes is Your Music & Performance Headquarters!

Ramblin Rhodes Music is Trinity's only music and performing arts center. This family-owned business started in 2008 near Trinity Elementary, and has since doubled in size and moved to their new location in the beautiful neighborhood of Longleaf.

The owners and their families have spent their entire lives in and around the music industry, making them experts in the fields of teaching, performing, and having fun with music. As soon as you step in their store, you feel comfortable, like you're a member of the family. The atmosphere they create is priceless, and they make their students and customers a part of that.

Summer Camps are scheduled throughout the summer for all ages. Ramblin Rascals is comprised of students 2-6, and is the area’s exclusive venue for music and performing arts for this age group. Camp Ramblin Rock, is the ultimate for children wanting to experience being on stage in a real rock band! Musical Theater Camp is for aspiring actors and actresses dreaming of performing with a company on Broadway!

The third Friday of each month during the school year is set aside for students to jam on stage, showcasing the songs they've been working on with their instructors. It is a premiere family event when students show-off their musical talents!

Whether you're looking to pick up a new or used guitar, learn to play a new instrument, or relax while listening to live music, Ramblin Rhodes Music has become the ultimate hang-out for musicians of all ages.

Saying goodbye to your beloved friend is a loving

but difficult decision.

Circumstances are often too stressful for either

you or your pet to make the trip to your veterinary

clinic. Now those final precious moments can be spent with your pet in the comfort and familiarity of their home surrounded by

all that they love.

Dr. Gayle Burrell

Sugar is Looking for a Forever Home

OK. I’m not a native of Tampa Bay, and I’m not a pure breed. But, I love the vibe here, and I appreciate having been saved by these wonderful women from SPCA-Suncoast!

You see, I’m nine years-old and my sibling and I were taken to an outdoor shelter in the Panhandle a few years ago. I’m not sure why. It’s confusing. We were looked over and put in a cage. My sibling disappeared one day. A family came and, well, I was left alone. It was scary. I got out of the cage when the volunteers would come to

take me for a quick “outing”, and when it was feeding time. The other dogs didn’t like me and would not let me eat with them. I couldn’t get near the food dish. It was a pretty scary experience and a very lonely, cold existence. When I say “cold,” I mean it was freezing! The water dishes were frozen solid, and I shivered from cold and fear, for what was to become of me?

Well, one day, these two nice ladies noticed me. Because of my older age, and the fact the other dogs wouldn’t let me eat, they loaded me in a van and, well, here I am!

I do have to take a thyroid medication for a condition I have. The nice ladies have been regulating it, but I’ve heard them say I would be a “special needs adoption.” I wish I didn’t have this condition, but oh well, what can I do?

I hope someone in this beautiful place called West Tampa Bay will be able to adopt me! I will be good and loyal and you will never have another dog that loves you more than me! I promise!!

During the summer months many of us travel with our family members, and that often includes our 4 legged family members as well. Some tips to remember for safe and happy travel with pets are:

Always take a crate or carrier with you. It will be much safer your pet it isn’t roaming around your car while you drive. It also gives pets a safe, comfortable place to be in a hotel or vacation home.

Some pets get car sick. It’s best to start the trip on an empty stomach. If you need to feed your pet during a long trip, do it with small portions over time. Some pets may also be sensitive to a change in drinking water. If your pet has a sensitive stomach you may want to take water from home with you.

Microchip your pet. Pets who are traveling may react differently than they do at home. Your pet who would never wander off at home may not be so predictable if they are frightened or excited while away.

Be aware of your pet’s limitations. That long walk on the beach may sound great to you but your pet only has paws between him and the hot sand. Pets can get heat stroke and even sunburned, so make sure that your pet is comfortable and enjoying the family vacation too.
