Shari Adkisson is an artist who regularly uses fibre in all of its
manifestations to create art. A true “mixed media” artisan, she has used various media but fibre has always been her first love and enduring passion. Shari began making full size bed quilts in the 90’s and now has morphed into making art quilts and more loosely structured fibre and paper compositions. She tries to see how unstructured her creations can be and still read as “fibre art”. Of course, this is open to interpretation, and as she changes and grows, her interpretation will most likely change and morph further. As a recent retiree from the corporate world, Shari is already feeling her pieces becoming more free and flowing. She is now interested in creating her own fabric to use as substrate for new pieces and pursue other mixed media processes. This new freedom is calling her to experiment with print mediums on either fabric or paper and to explore the digital frontier of Photoshop.

Jim Anderson has grown to love this community, just as his family has. He feels the opportunities to be involved and give back are endless.
Jim has been painting his entire life. He attended art school for two years at East Texas State University before starting and developing a commercial signage company for eighteen years.
Many people enjoy his watercolors. They have been displayed in the Medical Office Building in Ennis.
Jim is currently the lead artist for the Ennis Public Theatre, painting scenery for each show.

Alexandra Aucoin moved to Ennis in 2008 from Louisiana and says that Ennis is a big part of why she paints. When she moved here in high school she didn't have many friends to spend time with so she began taking an art class from Mrs. Jana in downtown Ennis. Alexandra dove right into painting and became inspired. She believes young passionate artists are hard to come by. She hopes that her work will inspire them to just go for what they love and to be creative.

Herb D. Baumgartner feels that he has been blessed to have the opportunity to work in clay for more than 35 years. He finds inspiration in the scripture that says “Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” Using native clays, some dug from his own farm in Ellis County, he throws each piece on the potter’s wheel. After shaping, refining, and drying the piece, he does a bisque (first firing) to harden the clay and stabilize it. He then combines minerals to make each unique glaze color and does a final glaze firing in a propane or wood fired kiln at 2175 degrees.

Ennis resident, Paula Campo, is widely known for the traditional pysanky she would prepare each year!
Pysanka is often taken to mean any type of decorated egg, but it specifically refers to an egg created by the written-wax batik method and utilizing traditional folk motifs and designs. The yolk and white are either allowed to dry up over time, or are removed by blowing them out through a small hole in the egg. Designs are then "written" in hot wax with a stylus or a pin-head on the empty shell.
Paula is very proud of her Czech Heritage and has often been seen at Polkafest donning her Czech kroj (traditional costume).

Maryann Elizabeth Colville, Coco to her friends, graduated with honors from Dallas’ Arts Magnet High School. She attended St. Edward’s University in Austin and ultimately graduated with honors earning her Bachelor’s of Arts in Art from the University of North Texas in Denton.
Coco was an educator from 1985-2009, most recently as an ESL instructor.
In 2003, after experiencing what Coco described as an “incredible spiritual healing”, she was unable to create. But she continued to practice her skills, develop her style, and explore different ways to express her artistic creativity including drawing, painting, mixed media, and collage.
Most recently Coco has begun making monoprints on paper and canvas. This is a simple process that yields multi-layered and often unexpected results. These prints are then used in whole or in part to create unique works of art.
Bright colors are used to create a sense of fun and joy.

Kristi Copeland made her first quilt at the age of thirteen. She now has twenty-six in her collection. Quilting and needlework are art forms that tell a story. Kristi chooses traditional patterns and works with 100% cotton fabrics. Each quilt is a machine piece with hand quilting, which is becoming a lost art. Many of her pieces incorporate embroidery and piecing. Kristi has taken classes at the International Quilt Show in Houston and the Dallas Quilt Show. At this time, her pieces are not for sale. But she does want others to be aware of this art form, which is slowly being taken over by technology.

Lonnie Creager takes inspiration from many sources including nature, people, religion, color, and light. He feels art should grab the eye and leave an impression on the viewer. Designs inspired by nature are timeless and easy to live with.
All of Lonnie’s work is handmade and custom worked in his studio using various methods with glass leaded, copper-foil, kiln forming, slumping, casting, hand-manipulating, sandblasting, and other techniques.
Lonnie became addicted to glass art and added kiln forming to his work in glass. He initially learned fusing from Kittrell-Riffkind (Kittrell-Riffkind Art Glass), kiln casting from Barbara Bernstein (noted glass artist), Brad Walker (glass artist and author), and Jody Danner-Walker (glass artist and author). He also attended Arrowmont School of Arts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for intensive immersion in glass art.

J.D. Fields grew up in Southern California back when they had farms lands and orange groves. She loves being outdoors and painting landscapes, seeking subjects that have something to say; old houses, farms, fields, creeks, and of course the mountains that she grow up with. With paint, a few brushes, color and light, she tries to paint a part of the landscape that brings back a memory that will touch the heart.
As a very young child, as far back as she can remember, she was never without a pencil, crayon or paper in her hands. She was always doodling or coloring in the many coloring books that her mom was always buying her. When she was a young lady, she would look at many Impressionists, Expressionism, Realism, Folk art, and Ming Dynasty paintings in books. With these paintings she saw places and things she knew or wanted to know about and loved.
J.D still draws upon those early influences in the way that she looks at life, the subjects she chooses and the manner in which she paints. J.D. wants to paint nature in a way that color and light plays off the subjects to try and tell a story or feeling rather than simply recording its image.
J.D.’s artwork is displayed at different locations in the California as well as in private collections in the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia.

Stephanie Ford is an artist that works in a lesser known medium, scratchboard. It is time consuming but lends itself beautifully to attention to detail, light and shadow.
A love of history drives her to focus on historical western art. She is a member of Women Artists of the West and the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. She travels to living history events throughout east Texas and Louisiana, finding inspiration not only in those dressed in uniforms of the past, but also in the simpler way of living long ago. Unlike many other artists who attend these events with cameras, she is a participant, attending with her husband, 4 year old daughter, in-laws, and two full size Civil War cannons.
Her scratchboard pieces have won awards and been accepted to shows such as the Bosque Art Classic in Clifton, the Breckenridge Fine Art Center Show, A New Look at the West in Corsicana, and The Spirit of the West Show in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
In addition to creating fine art and showing nationally, she is also a children’s book illustrator, having completed four titles for Pelican Publishing. These include titles on the War Between the States, a Texas telling of Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, and a title authored by a blind author about her adventures with her guide dog.

Berenice Hernandez can remember becoming interested in art as a second grader when her teacher read the book “The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush” to the class. She remembers every single page in that book. The sunsets the character painted left her inspired and in awe so much so that at her young age she too began painting sunsets.
As a teen Berenice stopped painting, feeling that she didn’t have time. But after graduating high school and moving to Waco for college she found herself in an arts and crafts store buying canvases, paint, paintbrushes, and, of all things, sticky notes. That is when she began to paint again.
Berenice was so excited to have found her calling that her artwork became something magical that she could not stop. Sticky notes are the main base in her paintings with inspiration coming from “music and God’s creations, his sunsets”.
Berenice desires to inspire people, especially in the young Hispanic community. She feels art shouldn’t always make sense. She would like the viewer to look at her work and use their imaginations to see things differently.

Kyndall Hodges is a twenty year old Ennis native and art major at Navarro County Jr. College. She graduated from Ennis High School in 2013. Prior to transferring to Navarro, she attended Wharton County Junior College. At Wharton she was Vice-President of the Art Club. To date, Kyndall has received several scholarships, including an art scholarship from Wharton. She currently works at HEB and has been working there since 2012.
Kyndall enjoys drawing, hand poke art and oil painting. She has submitted various art drawings and paintings to local and area contests and art shows. Kyndall also enjoys gymnastics and was part of Sokal gymnastics for several years.
Upon receiving her Associates Degree at Navarro, she hopes to transfer to an art school to further develop her artist skills and decide what career field she would like to go into.
Kyndall’s artwork has personal meaning and has developed over the years. She has struggled with a learning disorder for most of her life and she takes great pride in the accomplishments she has made.

Jana Jennings interest in participating in the Spring into Art exhibit came from her heart. Interest is defined as a “great attention and concern for someone or something”. As a lifelong Ellis County resident, Jana’s life exists here. She has spent much of it as an individual, a mother, a wife and a business woman here in Ellis County. As a Graphic Artist for the last 30 years, she has enjoyed the fruits of her labor working with great customers in Ellis County. Because of these things, she sees this exhibit as an opportunity to give back to the place she calls home.
Jana’s style of art is impressionist and gives to the minds of others. She paints subjects in their natural element, but in a relaxed fashion allowing others to make their own view of what they see. Her vision is to let the viewer enjoy the things she sees and her representation on canvas.
Most of her art is still life or landscapes, which allows the viewers mind to wander or to lose themselves in the piece. Jana believes that to be a great way to improve someone’s outlook on their situation or that of their loved ones.

Lea Marlin holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama. She is a professional in the field of design and sales of fine art. She is also a free-lance artist, creating a variety of fine art, murals for homes, schools and businesses.
Lea’s murals can be seen in elementary schools in Ennis, Al-Amir Restaurant in Addison, and Byblos Lebanese Restaurant in the Stockyards in Fort Worth.
She is currently working on pieces for another restaurant opening in Arlington.

Seventh generation Texan, Deb Miller has been painting since she was eight. “It feels like a natural part of my being. I don’t struggle with the concept of being an artist – just trying to perfect how it comes out. Several years ago, I realized that everything I look at I am sizing up for how it would come out on canvas. Thinking about it has an overwhelming response at times – makes me cry. Not out of sadness but just from the emotionality of it all. When I finish a great piece I know it. There is a bright energy that washes over me. Art should evoke thought and pleasure. “
With a degree from the Art Institute of Dallas, Deb has worked in the commercial art realm for many years, though never losing her passion for her fine art work.
Deb has studied under a variety of masters and is continuing to perfect her style and process. In each piece she is striving more and more for the balance of color and energy. She is an optimist who likes to be proactive, not reactive, and believes this is why the energy of drawing works well for her. All of her paintings have a firm drawing base to them.

Charlene Pagan has always enjoyed creating visual art (drawing, painting, and mixed media) and creating poetry. She is primarily self taught but studied under an accomplished artist while living in the Washington, D.C. area who encouraged her to continue developing her talent and to offer her paintings for sale.
In painting, Charlene finds that color develops into mood which seems to develop a space and composition comes about. These often reflect patterns in nature, time with the flowers in her garden, time with her children, or other inspirations found around her. “Always, they come to be what the painting seems to want to be”.
Much of Charlene’s inspiration comes from spending time gardening, establishing plants from seedlings as well as enjoying the annual flowers she has. Spring is her favorite season because she enjoys the miracle of life that seems to come in such luscious flowers when they, such tiny little beings, survive through wind and rain.

[email protected] After retiring from a thirty-nine year career with TD Industries, Inc., of Dallas,
David Perdue built a 700 square foot workshop, doing most of the work himself. His father loved woodworking and he has a lot of his tools and uses them often.
David creates unique outdoor furniture, wind spinners, and what he calls “toys for creative kids” using mostly cedar, white oak and some redwood. These woods are naturally rot resistant. Living in the country, on the east side of town, he’s always enjoyed things that move in the wind, and so wanted to come up with something different and relaxing that people could enjoy outdoors. The strong colors draw the eye to them, and make them interesting to watch, but, make no mistaking, they are made from wood. Each piece has some element of unpainted wood, and the grain of the wood is always evident. Some pieces have only small areas painted, and the unpainted areas highlight the beauty of the wood itself. They also have interesting shapes and simple colors in spots. Each piece is finished with 3 coats of hand applied spar urethane varnish, usually high gloss, to add depth, enhance resistance to weather, and to reflect the sun when they are moving. Even the slightest breeze causes them to move in a very relaxing way.
David and Vanessa, his wonderful wife of 40 years, love spending time with their family. Their two sons, Derek and Michael, their wives, Wendy and Kiyoko, and their children, Jackson, 10, Hana, 9, Kira, 8, and Nikko, 5, live in the Dallas area but visit often. David and Vanessa have made their home interesting and fun for them so they enjoy coming and spending the weekend!

Mr. Phillips is a native Texan, born in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1956. He grew up in North Texas in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Mr. Phillips lives south of Dallas, Texas on his ranch, Cherokee Ridge, where he draws, designs, paints and sculpts. His parents played a big role in his interests in the natural environment and education of his role as a steward of the land. His heritage is Native American (Cherokee) which also influenced his early appreciation of nature. This early education lead Mr. Phillips to pursue a formal professional education in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture. Mr. Phillips graduated from Texas A&M University with a BSLA. In 2012, he received his Masters in landscape architecture/urban design from UTA. After working as a Registered Landscape Architect for nine years, Mr. Phillips took a sabbatical for six months and traveled throughout Europe. His studies took him through the streets, gardens, and plazas of London, Paris, Venice, Florence, Munich, Zurich, Berlin, Budapest, Brussels, Brugge, Amsterdam, and Vienna. Mr. Phillips continued to travel throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean with his wife taking in the cultures, their arts, history, and people.
In 2005, Mr. Phillips became a registered member of the Texas Cherokee tribe known as “Tsalagiyi Nvdagi”. The Tribal UGU (principal chief) bestowed his tribal name “Standing Bear” upon him. Mr. Phillips’ early family education about being a good steward of the land has now come full circle and his art is influenced by the beauty, color and reverence of nature.

Shelley Spence is originally from Louisiana, but has been a resident of Ennis since 1998. For the last 15 years she has worked in Dallas as a Veterinary Technician. In 2014 she gave up her career to help her husband Brad run the family business, Spence Plumbing. It was a difficult decision, but it has allowed her to spend time in Ennis learning about our city and meeting people here. It has also allowed her more time to dedicate to her creative side.
Shelley’s mother is an artist in Louisiana. So although she never studied art herself, she was always surrounded by it. Her mother always encouraged her to make gifts for family and friends. Both of her parents have always encouraged her to figure out how to make something when she could not find exactly what she wanted. This is what inspired her love of “repurposing” old, unused items.
The majority of her art involves taking something abandoned and making it beautiful. She also enjoys cross-stitching, beading, painting, and jewelry making.
Her “repurposed” art allows her to think outside of the box and let her imagination run wild.
With the onset of spring and summer, Shelley’s hope is that her art will inspire others to create something of their own to decorate their favorite outdoor area.

Stephen Spence is originally from Seattle, Washington. He spent nine years in the Air Force, entering as a Computer Operator and finishing both his Bachelors and Masters degrees while in the Air Force. He moved into Data Center Management after obtaining his officer commission.
Stephen continued to manage data centers for various firms in the Seattle area after leaving active duty and joining the Reserves / Washington Air National Guard. He retired from the US Air Force/Air National Guard at the rank of Major and has spent the past 15 years in IT Audit and IT Risk Control Management.
Stephen began dabbling in abstract art years ago as a way to add art to his home that was personal, affordable, and more in line with his taste in art. His first piece was completed in 2001. In 2013, he returned to painting as a way to relax, recharge, and provide an outlet for creativity. Having a natural curiosity and “what if” thinking, he experimented with various textures, painting techniques, and subject matters in each of his art pieces. Each art piece is different from the next while. While each of piece of artwork is acrylic based medium, the style and texturing techniques of each piece vary dramatically providing the viewer an interesting range of colors, textures, and subject content.
