STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

…whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers, you did for me” – MATTHEW 25:40

Most of us are generous when it’s convenient for us. We are generous when we have the time or the money. But, generosity is the opposite of that. It means giving of one’s time, money, com-passion, forgiveness or mercy when it’s not con-venient; when it’s not on our schedule, but on the other person’s schedule.

Please pray for all the faithful departed

IT'S COMING BECAUSE HE'S COMING

The "He" is Jesus. Yes, he's coming, and I'm not talking December 25th. Jesus is coming for real, in the flesh, and in glory. He speaks of it in the Gospel for our celebration today, the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels of heaven with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him." (Mt. 25:31) In fact, Jesus has been speaking to us about his return for the last several weeks in parable form, like the one about the wise and foolish virgins waiting for the bridegroom, or the Parable of the Talents last weekend. Every year about this time our Scripture readings, especially those from the Gospels, have much to say about the glorious return of our Savior.

The "It" is the Season of Advent, those four weeks that precede the celebration of Jesus' first coming into the world. (Last year, it was four full weeks; this year, only three weeks and a day, because Christmas falls on a Monday in 2017.) This is the season devoted to preparedness for the return of the Son of Man. Since we have an abbreviated Advent this year, it seemed like a good idea to write about it before Advent actually arrives next weekend.

The Advent-Christmas letter & schedule of services was sent out last week. If you have not yet received yours, it should arrive very soon, with the cooperation of the United States Post Office. Still, just to be safe, here is a rundown of some of the events and observances that will help us move through Advent in a spirit of joyful hopefulness and corresponding preparedness.

As has been our tradition here at St. Cornelius, we will liturgize the weekends of Advent in dimmer than usual lighting. The Advent Wreath will be prominent near the ambo, and folks will light the wreath at the beginning of the weekend Masses. (There is a sign-up list in the back of church for those who wish to participate in this ritual; you are most welcome to do so.) The prayers, readings, and hymns of Advent will continually encourage us to look forward to the coming of the Lord, and to do what is necessary to prepare for his return. On the final Saturday of the season, our Communal Penance Service with individual confession & absolution will be offered at 3:00 PM, replacing the 3:30-4:00 PM Sacrament of Penance that is offered on most Saturdays.

The Sharing Hearts trees already are in the church near the baptistery, containing gift requests from needy families. As has been announced, this year we are working with SOS Illinois, an organization that offers assistance to children and families in need. If you wish to join in this work of Advent charity, please remember that all gifts need to be brought to church by Dec. 11th so that they can be distributed in time for Christmas. Gifts are to be unwrapped.

Every year we offer an Advent Family Event. This year the Tim Hannig Pro Kids Show will take place this coming Saturday following the first Mass of the Advent Season—6:00 PM in Pacocha Center; doors open at 5:45 PM. Full details are in this Bulletin. Please join us.

There are special Liturgical celebrations that occur every year during Advent beyond the weekend and daily Masses that deserve comment. These include:

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Patronal Feast of the USA, is on Friday, Dec. 8th. This is a holy day of obligation.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patronal Feast of the Americas: although the date of this feast is Dec. 12th, here at St. Cornelius we will observe it on Monday, Dec., 11th. Bishop Rojas will be with us to preside at a bi-lingual Mass, to be followed by a Fiesta in Pacocha Center. Everyone is welcome. Simbang Gabi, the Filipino festival that anticipates the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, also will be observed with a bi-lingual Mass, this one on Sunday, Dec. 17th, at 5:00 PM. Again, dinner & entertainment will follow the Mass. All are invited.

Celebrations such as these help keep the mood of Advent light. This is a time of joyful expectation of Christ's coming, not a somber, fearful concern about how we will be evaluated when he returns. So, pray, watch, listen, sing, and have fun during these days leading us to the Christmas holidays.

NOVENA TO OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE All are invited to participate in a Community-wide bi-lingual Novena of Our Lady of Guada-lupe, Dec. 3-11 at St. Corne-lius Church. Along with no-vena prayers, a rosary will be recited each day. Come and

let the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the expec-tant Virgin of Advent, prepare your heart for the arrival of her son. May the Mother of God bring us closer to the rich cultural diversity we celebrate in the U.S. Dates and Time for Novena: Sunday, Dec. 3—12;30pm—C Monday, Dec. 4—7:00pm—C Tuesday, Dec. 5—7:00pm—C Wednesday, Dec. 6—7:00pm—Chapel Thursday, Dec. 7—7:00pm —C Friday, Dec. 8—6:30pm —C Saturday, Dec. 9—7:00pm—C Sunday Dec.10—12:30pm—Chapel Monday, Dec. 11—6:30pm—C

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Each year we invite parishioners to light the Advent Wreath at the begin-

ning of each of the Masses on the Sundays of Ad-vent. This year Advent begins on Saturday/Sunday December 2/3. If you or your family would like to participate please sign the sheet in the back of the Church or E-Mail Barb Hecker at [email protected] and let her know at which Mass you would like to light the wreath. Some masses have already been spoken for but there are several empty spots.

FROM THE PARISH NURSE…

In my last article I wrote on how painful it is to loose a loved one. As adults we know the experience of emptiness as we grieve, as

well as the comfort of people who come along side to journey with us.

Children also experience loss and struggle with grief, but they express their grief in different ways. Children may not fully understand the loss of a grandparent or an eld-erly neighbor, but they are observing the non-verbal communication of the adults around them. By an adults reluctance to talk about death, children in turn keep from sharing their questions and concerns.

Helping children to communicate is a delicate balance. But, before you attempt to engage in any type of dia-logue, it is important that you take some time and exam-ine your understanding and feelings about death. Also, acknowledge that you may not have all the answers to your child's questions.

The experience of grief changes for the child as they progress through the various stages of growth and de-velopment. The following information has been taken from, Hospice – Talking To Children About Death. The article indicates that “preschool children usually see death as reversible, temporary and impersonal. Between the ages of five and nine, most children are beginning to realize that death is final and that all living things die, but still they do not see death as personal. From nine or ten through adolescence, children begin to comprehend fully that death is irreversible, that all things die, and that they too will die some day.

No matter how children cope with death or express their feelings, they need sympathetic and nonjudgmental re-sponses from adults. Careful listening and watching are important ways to learn how to respond appropriately to your child's needs.”

Experts in the area of mental health believe, that a child may not express grief immediately after a loss because they lack the maturity to work through the loss until they reach their adolescents.

If your child is upset and is sad, provide him or her with comfort by listening and encouraging them to express their feelings. Grief is a process, so have an ongoing conversation with your child to see how they are feeling. “Healing doesn't mean forgetting about the loved one. It means remembering the person with love, and letting loving memories stir good feelings that support us as we go on to enjoy life” (taken from KidsHealth – Helping Your Child Deal With Death).
