Be Charlotte may be a new name on the scene, but the 18-year-old has been working hard over the past couple of years to establish herself. As Charlotte Brimner she released a few EPs, but when I caught her playing a radio session in Inverness last year it was clear she was shifting direction, and utilis- ing technology to great effect. She may be a solo artist, but with the use of live samples and loops she creates a pretty full sound. Add a bit of rapping to her portfolio and you’ve got one of the most interesting and exciting young artists around. Charlotte said: “The name change has been something I’d been thinking about for a quite a while and naturally my music has developed so it felt like the perfect time to re-launch.” I’m wary of referring to Be Charlotte as a “female Ed Sheeran”, but she takes that as a compliment. “Definitely! The girls were both in the T Break tent last year as ordi- nary punters but still turned it into an event that shaped their careers. They walked out with a new favourite band North London indie stars Wolf Alice. Now they want to pull off the same trick, because this time they’ll be up on that stage giving it both barrels. And they fully realise the impact a good display can have as they aim for the big time. ‘They just blew us away’ One half of the duo, Chloe Van Thompson, raved: “It was amazing to discover a new band like that. “They are one of our favourite bands now. They stood out so much. “And we now even consider them an influence on our music. There are no plans to get too stressed out and blow their big chance. Chloe said: “We don’t see it as any pressure just because we’re one of the 16 picked. “We’ll have fun up there, like we do every time we play. We’re looking forward to it more than anything.” But with plenty of T experi- ence under their belt, the girls are just hoping the spirit of Balado makes it’s way to Stra- thallan today. But let’s just hope the band — brothers Eugene, Fergus, Eoin and Donal Gaine — doesn’t put the rock ’n roll curse on Strathallan this weekend and cause the heavens to open.
