WORKSHEET FOR BLENDED LEARNING DESIGN

HAIRSTYLIST CURRENT LEVEL 1

What to consider when moving your trades course online:

One of the greatest challenges is trying to determine how to teach and assess the practical components of a trades program in an online or blended program. The purpose of this worksheet is to provide you with the essential practical components of the Program Outline that need to be taught and assessed. With this information, you can determine which components can be taught and assessed online and which need to be taught and assessed in a shop environment.

If needed, Achievement Criteria can also be used by employer mentors to assess their apprentices’ performance of key practical activities on the job.

1) What are the essential practical competencies that need to be covered and assessed? (Achievement Criteria)

Achievement Criteria define observable performance expectations for competencies. They are found in the Program Outline and are used to identify which practical/shop/lab activities are essential and need to be graded. In addition, Achievement Criteria provide criteria that the performance should be graded against.

2) Do all competencies have Achievement Criteria?

No. Some competencies are covered as theory-only in technical training, and some competencies have practical components that aren’t graded. Engaging in a hands-on activity is an important part of learning and doesn’t always require grading. The instructor and industry subject matter experts who develop the Program Outlines select which practical activities warrant Achievement Criteria for each level.

3) How do I use this information?

All essential practical competencies have been identified below. When designing your blended learning course, you need to consider what can be taught online and what needs shop time to teach. You also need to consider which practical activities can be assessed online, in the shop, or where you can possibly have apprentice employer sponsors assist.

SAMPLE Essential Practical Competencies

For each Essential Practical Competency, decide which learning tasks can be taught online or must be in the shop. For each Practical Activity Assessment (Achievement Criteria), decide what can be assessed online, requires shop hours to as-

sess or can be assessed with the assistance of an employer sponsor. Use the Learning Task columns to determine which learning tasks are needed to teach the competencies. This can be used if

needed for planning hours or online content.

THIS IS A COMPLETED SAMPLE
