Formula 1 is just another business……
and so is meeting its needs with IT solutions …except………………………….
• the time available to design and build a complex product is a fraction compared with equivalent tasks;
• the “company HQ” changes for 4 days every 1 - 2 weeks to 19 locations in 17 countries across all 5 continents;
• key business decisions have to be made in seconds; • the main business metrics {wins, podiums, Grand Prix
Championship points} are witnessed in real time by over 100 million people in 128 countries!

Formula 1 Team’s Business
• To design, build and race Formula 1 cars to achieve success in the F1 Championship
– Highly technical design challenge– Rapid product development– Extensive manufacturing capability– Fiercely competitive business
“IT @ F1 Speed” (11 of 29) THE WELDING & JOINING SOCIETY Eastern Counties Branch Cambridge Sept 14, 2011
The Scale
• 150 - 800 people at team HQ
• Jaguar Racing factory in Milton Keynes 147,000 sq. ft.
• Ferrari at Maranello site has engine manufacture, test track (1.878 miles), 2 wind tunnels
• About 60 - 120 people travel to every race
• 15 - 40 tonnes of equipment taken to each race
“IT @ F1 Speed” (12 of 29) THE WELDING & JOINING SOCIETY Eastern Counties Branch Cambridge Sept 14, 2011
MUST be Always Available
• Systems MUST be available all of the time
– Factory based staff on demanding schedules– Travelling staff on different time zones– Weekends are our most critical time!– 1 hour lost during design phase means 2 or 3
design iterations are lost– 1 hour lost during race weekend is unthinkable!

The Great Software Race of 2001
• In 2004 emphasis was rule changes to “reduce the gizmos” including launch control ….. but
• Traction control was originally banned in 1993
• In early 2001 the teams were notified that from the Barcelona race (April 29) these techniques would be permitted.
• Led to the most public software battle in history
• Teams had varied success as the Barcelona, Australia and Monaco Grand Prix demonstrated
• One of the rare times that you'll see the results of a competition between software writers with an audience of over 100 million people !!!!!
