Trade frustration at MonarchrepatriationThe SPAA has voiced concern and frustration following the recent

government action in the wake of the collapse of Monarch Airlines.

SPAA President Alan Glen commented, "Of the 110,000 Monarch passengerswho were repatriated from abroad when the airline collapsed, it appears thatonly 20,000 were actually covered by the ATOL system. It seems that it wasactually a government decision to instruct the CAA to bring back the other90,000 passengers at the taxpayers' expense.

"As long ago as 12 years we proposed a £1 levy on all scheduled airfares toprovide financial protection for seat only sales. Successive governments havefailed to heed the advice or warnings, citing that a change in legislation wasrequired to do so.”

"As an ATOL holder myself," concluded Alan, "I have to say it does rankle. What is the point of consultation after consultation, when it seems thatnobody listens to what is the blatantly obvious? If anything good comes out ofthis debacle, let's hope it is that those with the power to change things, beginto listen."

The comments come after ABTA Chief Executive Mark Tanzer, speaking at lastweek’s ABTA Travel Convention in the Azores, demanded the governmentcommit to a levy on all flights to pay for repatriating customers of failedairlines following the collapse of Monarch.

The CAA’s two-week programme of repatriation flights was completed onMonday.
