Stanley Martin Lieber,

known world-wide as Stan “The

Man” Lee, was one of the most

important, influential and undeni-

ably famous figures in the history

of comics. Lee, along with the

artistic talents of industry

legends Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko

and John Romita Sr., creat-

ed some of the most iconic

characters in American fiction:

Spider-Man, The X-Men, Dare-

devil, The Incredible Hulk, just

to name a few.

Lee was a follower of

stories and literature all his life,

citing Errol Flynn adventure

movies as incredibly influential

and writing obituaries for news

services as a teen. His first break

into comics came in 1939 with the

help of his uncle, Robbie Solomon.

During this time, Lee would re-

fill ink pots, get lunches and erase

the pencils off the artist’s final

pages. His first writing assignment

would come soon, however; Lee

wrote filler text for the third issue

of Captain America Comics in

1941, and in the process invented

Captain America’s iconic ricochet

throw.

In 1942, Lee was drafted

into the US Signal Corps, where he

wrote training manuals and films, as

well as slogans and occasional car-

toons. During this time he would

receive solicitations from Timely

Comics, his place of work, and mail

them back. He returned in 1945

after WW2’s conclusion, and wrote

for various genres before turning

to superheroes with 1960’s Fantas-

tic Four.

Certain writers and artists

have achieved notoriety both with-

in the community: Frank Miller’s

early works on Batman have

informed nearly every big-

screen adaptation since their

creation in the 1980s, Grant

Morrison is infamous for his

reality-bending, high-con-

cept storytelling, and Jim

Lee’s highly-detailed, vivid,

punchy art style have elevated

landmark storyline in series

ranging from X-Men to Bat-

man. What made Stan Lee special

was that throughout his career, he

tried his very best to connect with

the audience, to associate a face

with the book they were reading

or the movie they were watching.

Most will recognize Lee from his

blink-and-you’ll-miss-them cameos

in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

films, but his audience-saluting was

a constant during his career.

Back when Lee was actively

writing comics, he had a small

column at the end titled “Stan’s

Soapbox”, where he spoke di-

rectly to the reader and talked

about whatever came into his

mind, be it comics, the amount

of fan mail he got that week, or

a PSA on the nature of bigots

and racists.

Lee was also known to

involve himself in pretty much

and form of media including

his characters, even appearing and

voicing himself in the final episode

of “Spider-Man: The Animated Se-

ries” titled Spider-Wars Part 2: Fare-

well Spider-Man in 1998. He’s been

spotted in each and every single

movie or TV show based on Mar-

vel properties since 2000’s X-Men,

be it a live-action appearance, a

voice clip or a picture hung in the

background. It was confirmed in

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that

Lee was playing the same character

in each: and agent sent by myterious

“Watchers” to observe the Earth

throughout history.

Lee’s final cameo before his

death was that of Peter Parker’s

school bus driver during the initial

invasion of New York in Avengers:

Infinity War. Director Anthony Russo

confirmed, however, that Lee filmed

many cameos back-to-back, and

that all Marvel releases in 2019 will

contain a cameo.

Stan Lee passed away on

November 12, 2018 due to a car-

diac arrest, the result of his battle

with aspiration pneumonia. A small

funeral was held on November

16, with his peers stating that a

grander memorial is in the works,

to commemorate his monumen-

tal status. He is survived by his

daughter, Joan Celia Lee, noted

comic book artist, and his broth-

er, Larry Lieber, who is credited

as a co-creator of Iron Man,

Thor and Ant-Man. To commem-

orate his passing, Marvel Comics

released their upcoming comics

with a special tribute on the

cover, reading Stan Lee – 1922-

2018.

Lee has been quoted with

saying, “Every comic is someone’s

first.” Each book starts with a

short summary of relevant infor-

mation, so the reader can simply

jump in and enjoy. If you readers

are fans of the Marvel movies,

video games or TV shows, do not

be afraid to jump into the source

material. A whole new world of

adventures are out there waiting.

The new year is right around the corner and many people are set for the “new year, new me” resolutions. In wanting to lose weight, get a new job,or just wanting to travel more. Many people don't usually think about getting their house in order. There are so many ways to change that. It all starts with organization. Being organized is really important as it influences our daily life. Getting organized is just as effective as changing your lifestyle. And can be accomplished through tasks. Such as organizing your phone, closet, bedroom, etc. Keeping your mind and space clutter free allows you to have less stress and your days to flow smoother.

To begin organizing, start off small and simple. You use your phone everyday and many people carry their whole lives on their phone. Starting off with all the apps that are downloaded on the phone. There are many ways to organize your phone to make it easy to access your apps. Here are 3 ways you can do it.

Category names: Labeling folders with verbs such as "watch," "play," and "learn" can help you get to the app you're looking for faster.

Color coding : Apps logos are designed to make it easy to identify and remember. Name labels, and colors can help you navigate

your phone faster.

The way you hold your phone: Think about how you hold your phone. See which way is easier for you to

open an app on the perimeter side of your phone, then place your most frequently used apps strategically around the edges of the phone.

Calendars are very basic but extremely useful. Having a calendar helps to remind yourself of everything from events to birthdays. It’ll help you keep on track on what you have goin on. Its best recommended to have a calendar that is portable. Whether it’s paper based or digital. This way you can jot down appointments and other worthy events as you go.

Color code: Have a different color for every

type of event going on in the calendar to make it easy to identify when looking

back

Routine : Jot down your daily routine to be sure you don't interrupt your own schedule

NEW YEAR NEW LIFESTYLE

Reminders : Have a reminder on your phone for important events, such as appointments

or birthdays.

Organizing your room can be stressful but rather than taking on a huge task, break the project into small pieces. Start by organizing your closet. An organized closet is the heart of a well kept bedroom.

WARDROBE CLEANSE: Go through your clothes and get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or that you haven’t worn in the past few months. If it’s seasonal (like a sweater or shorts), and you didn’t wear it for the past season, it’s time to let it go.

SWEATERS: Sweaters should be folded since hanging them can change their shape and cause

them to stretch. Stack them neatly on top of each other on shelves and try to not make

the piles too high, since that can make them fall. And creates more clutter.

HANGING: Pick an organizational system for your

clothing. Hang all the pants in one area, shirts in another, and dresses in another.

You can further break down categories by length, occasion, color or season. Velvet

hangers are great since they do not take up a lot of space and they prevent your clothes

from slipping off.

SHELF OR HANG BAGS: If possible, store bags on shelves. If you

don’t have the floor space, you can buy a storage cubby for the wall or floor. You can also hang handbags from clothing

hangers or use shower hooks.

KEEP DRAWERS TIDY: Fold everything in your clothing drawers

neatly. Arranging shirts and pants horizontally instead of vertically makes

them easier to sort through. Use a drawer divider for smaller items like socks, lingerie

and belts to keep everything separate, especially when you’re in a rush and

shuffling through your drawers.

Staying organized in the new year

can allow you to have a fresh start and clear mind. It will allow you focus on your personal goals and growth.

Healthy Recipes forthe New Year

By Astrid Barrientos

Its that time of the year again! Resolutions are being made and goals are being set. Some-times it’s hard to stick to those promises, so here are a few delicious healthy recipes to keep you guys on track! In this issue, we have Chicken Satay Salad, Zucchini Parmesan Crisps, Broccoli Cheddar Soup, and Chia Seed Pudding.

Chicken Satay SaladIngredients: • 1 tbsp tamari• 1 tsp medium curry powder• ¼ tsp ground cumin• 1 garlic clove, finely grated• 1 tsp clear honey• 2 skinless chicken breast fillets (or use tur-

key breast)• 1 tbsp crunchy peanut butter (choose a

sugar-free version with no palm oil, if possi-ble)

• 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce• 1 tbsp lime juice• a little sunflower oil, for wiping the pan• 2 Little Gem lettuces hearts, cut into wedges• ¼ cucumber, halved and sliced• 1 banana shallot, halved and thinly sliced• generous handful coriander, chopped• seeds from ½ pomegranate

Directions:1. Pour the tamari into a large dish and stir in the curry powder, cumin, garlic and honey. Mix well. Slice the chicken breasts in half horizon-tally to make 4 fillets in total, then add to the marinade and mix well to coat. Set aside in the fridge for at least 1 hr, or overnight, to allow the flavours to penetrate the chicken.

2. Meanwhile, mix the peanut butter with the chilli sauce, lime juice, and 1 tbsp water to make a spoonable sauce. When ready to cook the chicken, wipe a large non-stick frying pan with a little oil. Add the chicken and cook, cov-ered with a lid, for 5-6 mins on a medium heat, turning the fillets over for the last min, until cooked but still moist. Set aside, covered, to rest for a few mins.3. While the chicken rests, toss the lettuce wedges with the cucumber, shallot, coriander and pomegranate, and pile onto plates. Spoon over a little sauce. Slice the chicken, pile on top of the salad and spoon over the remaining sauce. Eat while the chicken is still warm.

Chia Seed PuddingIngredients: • 1 cup vanilla-flavored unsweetened almond

milk• 1 cup plain low-fat (2 percent) Greek yogurt• 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (preferably

grade B), plus 4 teaspoons for serving• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract• Kosher salt• 1/4 cup chia seeds• 1 pint strawberries, hulled and chopped• 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted

Benefits• Chia seeds provide an expansive amount of

necessary nutrients with very few calories, and is packed with antioxidants

• The high fiber and protein content will help with weight loss

• And chia seed may help lower your risk of heart disease.

Directions:1. In a medium bowl, gently whisk the almond milk, yogurt, 2 tablespoons maple syrup, the vanilla and 1/8 teaspoon salt until just blended. Whisk in the chia seeds; let stand 30 minutes. Stir to distribute the seeds if they have settled. Cover and refrigerate overnight.2. The next day, in a medium bowl, toss the berries with the remaining 4 teaspoons maple syrup. Mix in the almonds.3. Spoon the pudding into 4 bowls or glasses; mound the berry mixture on top and serve.

Broccoli Cheddar SoupIngredients: • 1 bunch broccoli• 1 small onion, finely chopped• 1 medium red-skinned potato, diced• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour• 3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable

broth• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper• 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg• 1 cup grated extra-sharp Cheddar• 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce• One 12-ounce can fat-free evaporated milk• 2 scallions, thinly sliced

Directions:1. Separate the stems and the florets from the broccoli. Trim and discard the bottom of the broccoli stems and peel the tough outer layers. Finely chop the stems and coarsely chop the florets and set aside separately. 2. Mist a large pot with nonstick cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the broccoli

stems, onions and potatoes and cook, stirring, until softened, 7 to 10 minutes. Add the flour and cook, stirring, until lightly toasted, about 2 minutes. Stir in the broth and bring to a boil. Re-duce the heat to maintain a simmer and contin-ue to cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened and the vegetables are tender, 12 to 15 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, combine the reserved florets and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover and continue to steam until the flo-rets are bright green and crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Add the entire contents of the pot with the florets to the soup along with the nutmeg. Stir to combine and remove from the heat. Stir in the Cheddar, Worcestershire and milk. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with the scallions.

Benefits• Like many whole foods, broccoli is packed

with soluble fiber that draws cholesterol out of the body

• Broccoli is a good carb and is high in fibers, which aids in digestion, prevents constipa-tion, and maintains low blood sugar levels.

61st annual

Nominations for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards

are finally here and they all honor the best music re-

leased between October 1st, 2017 and September 30th, 2018.

The Grammys were held in New York City last year, and this year the show is

finally returning to Los Angeles and will be broadcasted live from the Sta-

ples Center on Sunday, February 10th, beginning at 8:00 P.M. on CBS.

E News sat down with Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the

Recording Academy, to get some insight on what he

thinks about the location. “We are delighted to host

the world’s premier music event back in our home-

town and look forward to celebrating the remarkable

musical contributions made by songwriters, producers,

engineers, mixers and recording artists,” said Portnow.

As for the show itself, we don’t know much except the

date it will be broadcasted. For now, all we know is

that the Recording Academy selected Dolly Par-

ton for a very special honor. When February

comes closer, there will without a doubt

be more details on hosts and performers.

Don’t forget to watch the 61st an-

nual Grammys on CBS on Sunday, February 10th, to hopefully see

some of your favorite artists win a Grammy. We can assure you it will be a night to remember.

When some-

one thinks of the

most popular

songs of all time,

what might come

to mind? Pop?

Rock? Perhaps

even opera. One

song that has all

these elements is

Bohemian Rhap-

sody. Written by

the rock legend

Freddie Mercury,

lead singer of the

band Queen, in

a studio in Mon-

mouth,Wales,

over a three week

period after re-

leasing Sheer

Heart Attack(1974)

and complete-

ly destroying the

charts.

Queen had

all creative control

for their next al-

bum later called A

Night at the Opera

(1975). Mercury,

began writing the

song as an oper-

atic piece titled,

Real Life. “Bohe-

mian Rhapsody

had a very rare

effect on people,

which is that it was

one of those songs

where the first

time you heard it,

you hadn’t heard

anything like it.”

said Irwin Fisch,

professor at NYU

Steinhardt and

Emmy-nominated

composer in an in-

terview with Insid-

er.

One of the

reasons Bohemian

Rhapsody sounds

so unique is of

its structure. The

song is neither an

acapella, a bal-

lad, an opera or

rock. It’s actually

all three. It went

beyond the nor-

mal stature of pop

music which was

it is not a continu-

ous song. Mercury

essentially put four

different styles of

songs

together. Bohe-

mian Rhapsody

can be put into

five different sec-

tions: an acapella

introduction, bal-

lad, opera, hard

rock and finally a

reflective coda. It

is also highly un-

usual for a song

not to contain a

chorus. It went

over the top and

especially in the

operatic section

of the song, the

JANUARY COMICSBy Renzo Calarota

DC COMICS

Another year has gone by, and yet the comics keep coming! DC and Marvel both had fantastic years in 2018: DC dominated with some of the most epic event comics/limited series of recent mem-ory, such as the hard-hitting rock concert Darks Nights METAL and the critical darling Mister Miracle.

Marvel, on the other hand, was most notable this year for its most intimate works: the Fresh Start initia-tive breathed new life into many of their titles, with outstanding solo series such as Danny Cates’ ac-

tion-packed Venom relaunch and the outright horror of Al Ewing’s The Immortal Hulk. While these series will continue/be collected in trade this year, it’s always more exciting seeing what new stories are com-

ing. Without further ado, the coolest comics coming in 2019!

C O M I N G S O O N

Daredevil #1Written by Chip Zdarsky,

with art by Marco Chechetto, Daredevil #1 promises to be an exciting fresh start for

the historic Marvel char-acter. Originally created by Stan Lee, Bill Everett

and Jack Kirby, Daredevil has had an unprecedent-

ed string of excellent runs, from Frank Miller’s

gritty reimagination of the character in the 80s, giving birth to the historic Daredevil: Born

Again, to Charles Soule’s final story, The Death Of Daredevil. It’s a high bar to meet, but Zdarsky’s previous work gives me confidence that there is

nothing to fear.

Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers is in the spotlight but not for any positive reason. In footage surfacing online, the 24-year-old Nebraska native was captured calling attention to contestants Miss Cambodia Rern Sinat and Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie. The videos were reportedly captured from an Instagram Live on Miss Colombia Valeria Morales’s account. She and Miss Australia, Francesca Hung, were also present for the conversation. “What do you think of Miss Vietnam Nie?” Summers asked the women during the video. “She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she nods and smiles,” Summers said before laughing. “She’s adorable.” After Morales asked her “how?” Summers did the imitation a second time . Further into the video, Summers brought up Sinat. “Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine?” she asked. “Francesca said that would

After over a year of marriage, Cardi B says that she and Offset are splitting up. Like most other news in their relationship, Cardi announced the news in a video posted to Instagram, where she said that while she and Offset remain good friends and business partners, that things have not been working out, and that they’re no longer together.“So everybody been bugging me and everything and you know I’ve been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now,” she started the video. “We are really good friends and we are really good business partners — you know he’s always somebody that I run to to talk to, and we got a lot of love for each other but things just haven’t been working out between us for a long time.” In July, they welcomed their first child together, Kulture Kiari Cephus, a month after Cardi confirmed to all of us that she and Offset had secretly gotten married in September 2017.The news of their breakup surfaces after Cardi told fans in January that the couple had taken the new year of 2018 to work on their relationship, and during this time Offset got a tattoo of her name on his neck. Cardi said that the split was “nobody’s fault” — the two “just grew out of love,”

The couple then set a multi-day celebration in Jodhpur, India. The events had many celebrity guests, multiple outfit changes, and much more. This was Hollywood’s version of the royal wedding. The sangeet,a party filled with song and is where the party begins, this was held at Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhavan Palace, where both sides of the family performed songs and dances relating to the couple. “And what a performance it was,” Chopra, who wore an Abu

And so planning our wedding with an amalgamation of both was so so amazing”. The Christian ceremony, was officiated by Nick’s father Paul Kevin Jonas Sr, took place on December 1st. A strapless column gown made of over two million mother of pearl sequins was worn underneath, and a 75 ft tulle veil capped off the bridal look. Lauren, who invited Chopra as his guest to the Met Gala in 2017, went to the bride-to-be personally with sketches of the dress he imagined creating for her. Before this, the designer had made wedding dresses only for his daughter, his daughter-in-law and his niece. This meant alot to Priyanka that he designed her wedding dress. The newlyweds then flew out of Jodhpur for Delhi, where they hosted an additional wedding reception. Another reception for their industry friends is being planned for a later date.

The comments have blown up online with many slamming Summers and calling out the fact that it is an international competition. “You are in a competition called Miss Universe and not in an English class my dear!” one viewer commented. “I think this is not a good example of being a queen.” Others questioned her eligibility to compete after making the remarks. “Well, I seriously don’t want to see the next Miss Universe saying stuff like this,” another commentator added.

adding that it may take some time for them to get a divorce, and that “I’m always going to have a lot of love for him because he is my daughter’s father.”
