Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A local news source recently published an article with the title, ‘No point sending kids to private school because education is in your genes.’ My conservative nature compelled me not to participate in the online conversation, but being the end of term, I am throwing caution to the wind. For those that read the article or viewed the video, education was referred to as grades. St Francis Xavier aspires to nurture the whole person in a community centred on Gospel values, not just grades. Our shared vision ensures our focus is on developing children as lifelong learners who have a sense of social justice. Children who, through education, develop the values of compassion, honesty, respect, inclusivity and self-control. At St Francis Xavier, I feel we do this well. Pope John Paul II wrote, “Not only are the attitudes of teachers crucial for the success of Catholic education, but also the attitudes of Catholic parents.” Not every parent at St Francis Xavier is Catholic or even religious, but the quote highlights the importance of partnerships between the school and home to aspire towards a common vision. History has shown, when a vision is shared the benefits and success of students is increased. As a community we have shared expectations and beliefs about the people we want our children to grow into. Yes, grades are an important element of this but not at the expense of developing the whole child. When people discuss education in terms of price, grades should be only one aspect of the conversation. St Francis Xavier School values the gifts and talents of all members of our community. Our vision harnesses our uniqueness and ensures our focus remains on what we truly value. Our children are too precious to be considered just in grades or financial costs. Off my soap box. In closing, thankyou to all families for their continuing support. The privilege of being involved in your child’s education is appreciated and as a staff we look forward to working in partnership for your child’s education. God Bless

First Eucharist What a lovely and special celebration for our students and families who received the Eucharist for the first-time last Saturday night. Receiving the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ is the centre of our Catholic faith. It is through this special experience that our faith is developed and strengthened. The year four students really did show how special and important the occasion was to them in the way they displayed such reverence and joined in so well. Congratulations to all the students, their families and teachers on being so well prepared for the celebration.

NAIDOC Liturgy To finish our celebration of NAIDOC Week we held a prayer liturgy on Friday morning. The liturgy followed the NAIDOC theme of ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’. Students were able to pray for Aboriginal and Islander people as well as people from all cultures, that we will continue to listen to each other and work towards reconciliation.

The main messages of the Liturgy were: 1) That we have to put things into action, we can’t just talk about showing our values and love for each other, we have to actually do it. 2) We can pray to God to send his helper, the Holy Spirit to strengthen us to put things into action.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations were held last week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The week was a great opportunity to work towards addressing two distinct needs in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education outlined in the Australian Curriculum: • that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are able to see themselves, their identities and their cultures reflected in the curriculum. • that all students engage in reconciliation, respect and recognition of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.

It was a great week of learning for everyone! We thank Miss Barley and Mrs Cook for coordinating the week. Monday – Learning about Aboriginal technology with Wild Man, Philip Green

Tuesday – Allendale Didgeridoo Boys showed us the difficulties of circular breathing.

Wednesday – sizzling kangaroo sausages for lunch.

Thursday – Fun Day of culture for every age.

Friday – The Prayer Service concluded the week of celebrations.

Curriculum Day - Student Free There will be a pupil free day on Monday 22nd July as teachers engage in Professional Learning on teaching the Scriptures. NO STUDENTS - will be required at school this day. Our Outside School Care Program will be running on the day.
