TIDBITS® CREEPS SLOWLY ALONG WITH
GLACIERSby Patricia L. Cook
Glaciers form when fallen snow doesn’t melt but compresses over years of buildup into large, sometimes gigantic, thick snow masses. As the snow sits in one place it transforms into ice. • Ice masses that form glaciers are able to move like very slow rivers. There are smaller ones about the size of football fi elds but many grow to be over 62 miles long (100 km). Glaciers are found on most continents of the world, even Africa. The majority are found in Antarctica and Greenland. • The formation of glaciers depends on climatic and geographic conditions. Most occur above the “snow line,” in mountainous areas or at the polar regions. The snow line is an altitude at which more snow accumulates in the winter than will melt in the summer. While the snow line in Antarctica is at sea level, in Africa it is above 16,732 feet (5100 m), Washington State’s snow line occurs at around 5500 feet (1600 m). Because of a lack of snowfall, Siberia is an extremely cold area that has no glaciers. Canada has the most glaciers in North America, covering over 77 square miles (200,000 km²). Glaciers cover 29 square miles (75000 km²) in the United States, including Alaska; and only 4.25 square miles (11 km²) in Mexico.

GLACIERS (continued): Approximately 10% of the land area on earth is covered in glacial ice. That is over 5.8 million square miles (15 million km²)! • About 75% of the world’s freshwater is stored in glaciers. The ice of Antarctica is over 2.6 miles (4.2 km) thick in some places. • According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) based in Boulder, Colorado, there are eleven types of glaciers: ice sheets, ice shelves, ice caps, ice streams/outlet glaciers, icefi elds, mountain glaciers, valley glaciers, piedmont glaciers, cirque glaciers, hanging glaciers and tidewater glaciers. Ice sheets are masses of glacial land ice that extend more than 20,000 square miles (50,000 km²). There are two ice sheets on the earth today, covering most of Antarctica and Greenland. • More than 99% of the freshwater ice on earth is contained in the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. The Antarctic Ice Sheet covers an area about the size of the United States and Mexico combined. The Greenland Ice Sheet, which covers most of Greenland, is three times the size of Texas.• When ice from the gigantic ice sheets oozes into the sea or ocean which is cold enough for the ice to remain frozen, ice shelves can form. Ice shelves fl oat over water but are still connected to land. The ice shelves can grow as they gain ice from the ice sheets or shrink if icebergs “calve” off at the edges. (Calving is the term used when icebergs break off.) • There are some large ice shelves on the northern coast of Canada’s Ellesmere Island. However, most of the ice shelves on earth hug the coast of Antarctica.• Ice caps are miniature ice sheets. They cover fewer than 20,000 square miles (50,000 km²). They are found in polar and sub-polar regions that are high in elevation and mostly fl at. Iceland has an ice cap, as compared to the much larger ice sheet on Greenland. Ice fi elds are also similar with fl ow infl uenced by underlying ground that is not as fl at. They are usually smaller than ice caps. • Ice streams are like little rivers that fl ow more rapidly than the glaciers they are surrounded by. The Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets have many ice streams that fl ow outwardly.• Mountain and valley glaciers are, as you may expect, named because of their locations. Mountain glaciers develop in high mountain areas and valley glaciers form from ice fi elds or mountain glaciers that spill into the valleys below them. • Valley glaciers tend to look like giant tongues when seen from above. They can sometimes reach sea level. • The largest mountain glaciers are found in the highest mountains of the world: the Himalayas in Asia, the Andes of South America, and the mountains of northern Canada, Alaska and on Antarctica.• When valley glaciers spill out onto fl at plains they spread out into large lobes, forming piedmont glaciers. The Malaspina Glacier in Alaska is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Formed by the spill-out from the Seward Ice Field and the Agassiz Glacier, the Malaspina fi lls the plain in southeastern Alaska. Since it does not connect to the Gulf of Alaska or any of its bays, it does not qualify as a tidewater glacier. The Malaspina Glacier spreads out over 1931 square miles (5,000 km²) of the coastal plain below the Saint Elias Mountains. • Glaciers that look like bowls high on

Smells and Scents
Cats have extremely good sense of smell and the ability to scent mark their territory. Humans have a very poor sense of smell compared to the cat and dog. Cats can detect smells 1,400 times better than humans and dogs are best at 1,000,000 times better than humans. Cats use scents called pheromones to select a mate, communicate terri-tory limits, and to mark their owners.
Humans have approximately 5 million olfactory cells for the detection of smells. Cats have about 200 million olfactory cells which alert the cat to likes, dislikes, dangers, and the proximity of a mate.
Cats ‘mark territory’ with scent glands located in paws, facial glands, and the tail. This allows the cat to recognize environmental signals they spread in their territory. Signals to mate, signals of possession, and signals to confront intruders are part of the non-verbal language of the cat. When a cat rubs on objects they leave an olfac-tory scent that gives other cats a message/business card. When your cat rubs on you he is ‘marking’ you as his own and trying to give you a scent message. Few people ever relate ‘facial marking’ or ‘tail marking’ with its true meaning – “love, af-fection and you are mine”. Feline knowledge: in a great human/cat relationship your cat owns you.
The Flehmens response (mouth gaping) is the evolution of higher smell capabilities. Specifi c taste/smell cells located in Jacobson’s organs pick up subtle odors in the environment. A cat that ex-periences these smells may hyper-ventilate, open mouth breathe, and curl his upper lip in a grimace expression.
Olfactory cats make many of their decisions about interaction with humans and other animals based on smell. Friend or Foe is defi ned in an instant.

mountainsides are called Cirque Glaciers. All of the glaciers in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado are cirque glaciers. The Matterhorn in Switzerland is an example of a “horn,” which is formed when the top of a mountain has been surrounded by cirque glaciers. • “Ice aprons,” or hanging glaciers cling to and as the name implies, hang from, steep mountainsides. These are common in the Alps and often have avalanches from their steep inclines. • When valley glaciers fl ow far enough to connect to the sea they are called tidewater glaciers. Many icebergs originate from tidewater glaciers. Hubbard Glacier, which is part of Glacier Bay National Park, is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. The highlight of most cruises to Alaska, the glacier was fi rst mapped in 1895. Icebergs up to 200 feet (61 m) high break off fairly often causing spectacular splashing and crashing and giving tourists quite a show. Glacier Bay has 16 tidewater glaciers. • Glacier Bay and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska, along with Kluane National Park and Reserve in the Yukon Territory and Tatshenshini-Alsek Park in British Columbia, form a vast ecological area that covers 37452 square miles (97000 km²). The area is mostly untouched except for a historic First Nations presence (Native Canadians). A massive complex of high peaks and glaciers, the area is home to many grizzly bears and caribou as well as the largest non-polar icefi eld in the world. The entire area was declared a World Heritage Site in 1993.

Garnets
Red is the color most often connected to this gemstone that is often found in antique jewelry. However, the world of garnets is far more colorful than that just red Spectacular nds, especially in Africa, have enhance the traditional image of the garnet with a number of lovely hues including shades of green, a variety of yellows, a blazing orange and some very nice earth-colored shades. The only color never found in a garnet is blue. This number of garnet hues has enabled this gemstone to continue to be trendy and stylish. While fairly common, the garnets have some rare stones such as star garnets whose color changes depending on whether displayed in articial or natural light. Garnets are found in several African countries, India, Russia and Central and South America. Skilled hand of cutters all over the world over cut garnets into both classical and designer shapes. If your jewelry features a garnet stone you can be condent that it will last a long time and the brilliance given to it by Nature will never dim.

the years he has transformed from a small town Canadian to one of the most widely known fi lmmakers in the world. • Cameron’s father was an electrical engineer and his mother an artist. He was encouraged to express himself artistically as well as to challenge himself mentally. He was a science fi ction fan early on as a boy. • As a leader among his friends, Cameron organized adventures including building a catapult that would pitch boulders and even creating a miniature diving vessel that sent mice to the bottom of the Niagara River. • At the age of fi fteen, Cameron watched the movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was fascinated! He wanted to learn how Stanley Kubrick, the director, had put together such a thrilling motion picture. He watched the fi lm ten times and was hooked on fi lmmaking for life.• Cameron’s father accepted a job in Orange County, California, when he was 17, and his interest in fi lmmaking started to fi ll his thoughts constantly. He had been writing science fi ction stories and fantasizing about fi lms instead of doing his homework for years; now he was near the movie capital of the world, Hollywood! • After high school, Cameron became a student at California State University at Fullerton, initially pursuing a degree in physics. He changed his major to English but after a short time, dropped out of college. • Cameron worked a short time as truck driver pulling over for rest stops to write screenplays. He then went to work as a self-taught designer emphasizing visual effects.• Cameron is best known today as the Oscar-winning director of Aliens (1986), Titanic (1997), and Avatar (2009). • In preparing for the movie, Titanic, Cameron spent a lot of time at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. He studied/observed the wreckage in twelve dives to the site. Explaining his feelings, he said, “Working around the wreck for so much time, you get such a strong sense of the profound sadness and injustice of it, and the message of it.” He felt a great responsibility to be historically accurate. • Titanic replaced Star Wars as the top-grossing fi lm of all time (at that time, 1997-98) grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. The movie won eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. • Titanic remained the top-grossing fi lm until 2010, when another Cameron fi lm, Avatar, replaced it. Cameron announced in August, 2013, that he plans to fi lm three sequels to Avatar to be released in December of 2016, 2017 and 2018. • Cameron has combined his two passions: producing fi lms and underwater exploration. As a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, he and his engineering team spent seven years developing the “Deepsea Challenger,” a unique manned submersible capable of going to the ocean’s greatest depths. In March 2012, he piloted the sub to the “lowest point in the Mariana Trench and the deepest known place on the planet.” (A depth of 35,800 feet, almost seven miles; 10.9 km) After his exploration, the deepest solo dive in history, he shared his story as he traveled with his Deepsea Challenger across the country. He donated the sub to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Space Heater Safety Tips
Q: In my neck of the woods we don’t usually have cold winters, but this one has been a doozy. My mother hauled out her ancient space heater in December. A couple weeks ago I was visiting her
and noticed that some laundry had fallen out of the basket and was lying atop the heater! Fortunately it was not turned on, but I’m terrifi ed of what could happen. Can you remind your readers to keep the
area around space heaters clear at all times? -- Lacy S., Valdosta, Ga.
A: You just did, and I thank you for it. Regardless of the type of portable electric heater you have, it must be set up so that there is 3 feet of clearance around it, and placed on a heat-resistant surface
(bare fl oor, for example, not carpet).Additionally, make sure that the outlet being used
can handle the amount of electricity the space heater will draw. Don’t plug anything else into that
outlet.Consider replacing older space heaters. While I’ve seen many models built as long ago as the 1950s
that are very sturdy, they often do not meet current electrical standards and can use a lot more power than newer models, meaning higher electric bills. What’s the best space heater to purchase? I’m not a fan of the classic open-coil model, and there are alternatives. For example, an enclosed oil heater, which looks like a radiator on wheels, circulates
heated oil through each section and provides indi-rect heat and a greater measure of safety. There are heaters that fi t inside a kitchen’s kickspace, oscillat-ing tower heaters, and heaters disguised as fi replac-
es or standing vases.Portable heaters range in price from about $50 to several hundred dollars, so take a look at several options both in the home-improvement store and
online. Make sure any heater you consider has the UL (Underwriters Laboratory) label. Heaters with thermostat control can provide greater energy sav-ings. And it’s important to make sure you purchase a heater that can handle the size of the room where
you’ll use it the most. (Check the sizing chart on the heater’s packaging.)
HOME TIP: Plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip; if an extension cord
is needed, choose a heavy-duty cord of 14 gauge or larger.

A woman walks into the downtown welfare offi ce, trailed by 15 kids.
"Wow," the social worker exclaims, "are they all yours?"
"Yep, they are all mine," the fl ustered momma sighs, having heard that question a thousand times before. She says, "sit down terry." All the children rush to fi nd seats.
"Well," says the social worker, "then you must be here to sign up. I'll need all your children's names."
"Well, to keep it simple, the boys are all named terry, and the girls are all named terri."
In disbelief, the case worker says, "are you serious? They're all named terry?"
Their momma replied, "well, yes, it makes it easier. When it's time to get them out of bed and ready for school, I yell,'Terry!', And when it's time for dinner, i just yell 'terry!' And they all come a running. And if i need to stop the kid who's running into the street, i just yell 'terry' and all of them stop. It's the smartest idea I ever had, naming them all terry."
The social worker thinks this over for a bit, then wrinkles herForehead and says tentatively, "but what if you just want one kid to come, and not the whole bunch?"
"Then I call them by their last names."
