Could It Be Lyme Disease? Chronic illness, pain and fatigue By Dr. Greg Fors, DC Board-certied Neurologist Do you feel chronically ill, suffering daily with pain and fatigue? Does no one seem to know why you are suffering with strange symptoms of cyclic fevers, muscle aches and weakness, headaches, tingling and numbness? Possibly you even had a Lyme screen test that came up negative. Lyme disease and its co-infections are extremely difcult to diagnosis, especially in the chronic case. Commonly used tests can miss up to two thirds of positively infected individuals. The ELISA antibody test is useless in the rst month after a tick bite and may not detect past infections. The commonly relied upon Western blot antibody test is nearly as ineffective as the ELISA, with only 44% sensitivity. In one study of children known to have Lyme disease the Western blot antibody test was only able to identify 3 out of 10 cases. This is why it is extremely important for individuals with suspicious and chronic disorders to see a doctor who has an in-depth understanding of chronic Lyme disease and its co-infections. Personally as a doctor I take a very broad view of what Lyme disease actually is. It is traditionally dened as an acute infectious illness caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, however in its chronic form it involves so much more. Other factors can take on a more signicant role, such as co-infections with Bartonella and Babesia, bacterial Biolms, immune dysfunction, hormonal imbalances and auto immune responses such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This is what makes this disorder is so difcult for the general practitioner to understand and properly treat. The symptoms of Lyme disease can show up with a bang or progress very slowly causing a great deal of confusion. The usual initial symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, muscle ache and a stiff neck which are usually written off as a bad case of u, unless they are combined with the very classic bull’s-eye a rash. But the bull’s- eye rash is found in only about one third of the diagnosed cases. Furthermore, many do not get any early symptoms and months later their rst signs may be muscle weakness, tingling/numbness, tremors/ tics, optic disturbances, memory deciency, psychiatric presentations, or other neurologic disorders. Undiagnosed co-infections commonly involve the microscopic protozoan parasite Babesia transmitted by biting insects, commonly ticks. Bartonella bacterial co-infections are also transmitted by biting insects such as mites, eas, mosquitoes, ies, and can be transmitted by ticks as well. A form of Bartonella is known as ‘Cat Scratch disease’. Other co-infected agents are Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis, tick-borne bacterial diseases that infect animals and humans. In chronic complex disorders involving pain, fatigue and neurological symptoms Borrelia burgdorferi and these other infective agents should be considered and tested for by utilizing laboratories specializing in their diagnosis. When Lyme disease and its co-infections are not identied or properly treated in the early stages, symptoms may creep into ones life over months or even years. They may wax and wane, even going into remission, only to come out years later when the individual is under a great deal of metabolic stress. With symptoms, negative lab results can mean very little and are extremely unreliable for Lyme disease diagnosis and its many co-infections. Many Lyme patients are nally diagnosed because of continuing chronic symptoms, such as forms of arthritis, autoimmune disorders, bromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome; the list is nearly endless. Also, many individuals suffer with thyroid symptoms that do not respond well to thyroid medication. The number one cause of thyroid problems in the US today is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder. Chronic infections such as Lyme disease are a common reason for the immune system to become over active and attack the thyroid as well as other tissues. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month! ► On May 18, 1861, the Humboldt Times newspaper casts fi rst lady Mary Todd Lincoln in an unfl attering light when it recounts a tale of how Mrs. Lincoln had usurped her husband’s presidential duty of appointing federal offi ces. According to the report, Mary Todd Lincoln took it upon herself to appoint a stranger to any offi ce he desired.

► On May 15, 1942, gasoline rationing begins in 17 Eastern states as an attempt to help the American war effort during World War II. By the end of the year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had ensured that mandatory gasoline rationing was in effect in all 50 states.

► On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court hands down a unanimous decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, ruling that racial segregation in public education is unconstitutional. The decision dealt with Linda Brown, a young black girl who had been denied admission to her local elementary school.

► On May 19, 1967, one of the fi rst major treaties designed to limit the spread of nuclear weapons goes into effect as the Soviet Union ratifi es an agreement banning nuclear weapons from outer space. The United States, Great Britain and several dozen other nations

had already signed and/or ratifi ed the treaty.

► On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter’s Square in Rome by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca. Agca claimed that he had planned to go to England to kill the king, but it turned out there was only a queen and “Turks don’t shoot women.”

► On May 25, 1927, Robert Ludlum, author of 25 thrillers, is born in New York City. Although he never earned a reputation as a masterful prose stylist, his suspenseful stories such as “The Bourne Identity” gripped a wide readership. As a critic for The Washington Post noted about one Ludlum novel: “It’s a lousy book. So I stayed up until 3 a.m. to fi nish it.”

► On May 23, 1934, notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, La. All told, the Barrow Gang was believed responsible for the deaths of 13 people, including nine police offi cers.

• When Nissen graduated from college in 1938 he set about improving the invention. He called it the “trampoline,” from the Spanish word trampolin which means “diving board.” He began to mass produce them, but couldn’t understand why they weren’t selling. He found that people saw it as something suitable only for the circus or professional performers. So he strapped a trampoline to the top of his car and took off cross-country, giving exhibitions anywhere a crowd was gathered: schools, fairs, playgrounds, and sports events, taking orders on the spot. • When World War II started, he convinced the Army and the Navy that a trampoline would be a good part of a pilot training program. Pilots training on a trampoline became less fearful of being upside-down. They learned to control the falling and the turning of their bodies, and it helped them hone their balance and body control in mid-air situations. Soldiers who used trampolines in the service ordered them when they went home after the war. Business continued to improve. In 1948, trampolining was included in the NCAA and AAU list of gymnastic events at offi cial competitions. In the 1950s it swept the country as a fad. • Nissen went on to build a very successful sports equipment empire, manufacturing gymnastics equipment and trampolines. George Nissen holds over 30 patents on sports and fi tness equipment. At

the age of 83, he won the Senior Fitness Award from the California Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Nissen works to pass on his enthusiasm and love for the sport of gymnastics, which is where the story of the trampoline began: each year the Nissen Award is given to the outstanding collegiate gymnast in the nation.

TRAMPOLINE FACTS

• As a promotional stunt, Nissen taught a kangaroo to jump on a trampoline and then went to Egypt to bounce on top of a pyramid. He trained the kangaroo using dried apricots as treats and quickly learned that the best way to keep from getting kicked was to hold “hands” with the kangaroo’s front paws.• When offi cials at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital did a study, they found that four percent of the patients seen in their hospital emergency room over a fi ve-year period in the mid-1990s were there with orthopedic injuries due to accidents on trampolines. About 70% of the accidents were due to more than one child being on the tramp at one time, a defi nite no-no. • Jeff Schwartz of Illinois bounced on a trampoline for 266 hours, 9 minutes in 1981, setting a world record. (That’s just over 11 days.) He was allowed breaks for eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom.• The record for the most consecutive somersaults on a trampoline is 3,333 and was set by Brian Hudson (UK) at Jumpers Rebound Centre, Gillingham, Kent, UK on

September 18, 2003.• A world record was set on July 24, 1999 when a team of 20 members of a trampoline club in West York, UK, did 29,503 somersaults in exactly fi ve hours using two standard trampolines. This averages out at just under 1,500 somersaults per person, or about fi ve somersaults per minute. • In 1986, Cleveland State University’s Delta Epsilon fraternity fi elded a six-man team that set the Guinness World Record for continuous bouncing on a trampoline, with 53 days of jumping between six people. President Reagan called the team to congratulate them.

COMPETITIVE JUMPING

• In 1962, West Germany was the fi rst country to host an international trampolining event.• On a modern competitive trampoline, a skilled athlete can bounce to a height of up to 33 feet.• In competitive trampolining, each contestant must perform two sets of maneuvers. In the fi rst set, everyone must complete the same ten basic moves which include the three standard shapes: tucked, piked, and straight. The second set is free-form in which contestants make up their own routines. In all routines, the contestant must begin and end on their feet. • During a competition, a trampolinist is in contact with the trampoline bed for just 0.3 seconds between moves. In 2010, a new “Time of Flight”

score was introduced into professional trampolining, which is calculated on how much time the trampolinist is in the air. To measure it, a box is fi tted under the trampoline which measures every time the competitor hits the bed.• There are fi ve judges. When a performance is scored, the highest and lowest scores are tossed out and the remaining scores are added together to come up with the fi nal tally.• Nissen always wanted to have trampolining included in the Olympic Games. This fi nally happened in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In 2008, Nissen was able to travel to Beijing to watch the trampoline event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He was given the honor of testing out the Olympic trampoline before the event.• George Nissen died in San Diego, California, on April 7, 2010 at the age of 96 from complications from pneumonia, having seen his dream become a reality.

Fore! Look out as Tidbits presents a few facts about the tools necessary for a good golf game.• The ancient Romans played a game similar to golf as we know it, but the modern game of golf was developed in Scotland in the 1400s. The fi rst written record is that of a ban of the sport by King James II in 1457, calling golf a distraction to learning archery, which was necessary for national defense.• The offi cial rules of golf state that a golfer’s bag may contain 14 clubs. A typical player will carry a driver, two woods, seven irons, three wedges, and a putter. The putter has earned the nickname “the money club” because it is the one used to tap the ball into the hole. The fi rst clubs were made entirely of wood, followed by wood shafts with iron heads. In the 1920s, steel-shafted clubs came into play. Shafts made of fi ber-reinforced composite materials were introduced in the early 1970s. • The earliest golf balls were probably made of wood. Golf balls in the early 1800s consisted of thin leather pieces stuffed with feathers. Those that were very tightly packed fl ew the farthest. More than 5,000 patents have been granted for various forms of golf balls since 1900. Those little indentations on the ball are called dimples and were fi rst used about 100 years ago. Players discovered that damaged balls fl ew farther than new ones, so companies began manufacturing balls in different shapes trying to increase the distances. One ingenious fellow studied the ball’s path, and came up with the current dimpled idea. Today’s regulation golf ball has 336 dimples.

• An offi cial golf ball should not weigh more than 1.62 oz., and must be at least 1.68 inches in diameter. • There are about 32,000 golf courses worldwide, with close to 20,000 of those in the United States. The country of Singapore has one course every 10 square miles, giving it the record for the highest per population density. England has one course every 27 square miles, and Scotland every 56. Yet some of the most populated areas of the world have no golf at all, for example, the Ukraine, whose population exceeds 47 million with nary a course in sight! • During a 1971 tournament in England, a 26-year-old golf pro named John Hudson achieved two consecutive holes-in-one at the 11th and 12th holes. Don’t expect to tie his record – the chances of repeating this are one in 67 million. • If you’d like to golf on the world’s longest course, you’ll have to travel to Australia. Some of the tees are 50 miles (80.5 km) apart on the 850-mile-long (1368 km) Nullarbor Links course that spans two Australian states. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the occasional wild camel or wombat. Be sure to notch out enough time for your game – somewhere between three and four days! The cost seems reasonable, however at $46.

▲ Want a refreshing, low-cal beverage that’s seriously inexpensive and feels lavish? Fill a pretty glass pitcher with ice water and add some sliced cucumber. It looks straight out of the spa, and it’s tasty, too.▲ “We packed away all of our winter items, as it’s fi nally starting to feel like springtime, but one thing we didn’t pack away is the small packets of hand or foot warmers. These are packs that, when exposed to air, heat up and provide moderate heat for several hours. The ones we bought have adhesive on one side, and we can slap them on our baby’s bottle to warm it when we’re out and about. They really work.” -- R.G. in New York

▲ Ready to hit the beach or lakeside? Make your own sneaky, secure money keeper by cleaning out an empty bottle of sunscreen. Choose one that has a wide mouth if you can. If not, try to make an even cut at the top of the label. Then just slide the bottle open, put your valuables in and secure with tape. It will look like you brought a bottle of sunscreen, and no one will know that your money or even a cell phone is inside!▲ A fast, cheap and effective treatment for leg cramps is drinking a little bit of pickle juice. I’m not sure if it’s the vinegar or the combination of vinegar and salt, but it works -- and fast! My grandpa told me about this, and recently I have seen it in magazine articles and on television shows. Nothing fancy, just take a big slug of the juice at the very fi rst sign of a cramp. -- E.E. in Maine

It’s been used on turtle shells, elephant tusks, racing cars, the space shuttle, and human wounds. It’s cyanoacrylate, better known as Super Glue and an estimated 90 percent of homes now have at least one tube of it.• Harry Coover was a researcher working for Kodak Research Labs in 1942. He was trying to develop a clear plastic gunsight for use during World War II. Working with acrylate monomers– a type of acrylic– he discovered cyanoacrylates. The discovery wasn’t at all helpful for the purpose of clear gunsights because the cyanoacrylate stuck to everything and made a big mess. He set the discovery aside. In 1951, Coover was working at the Tennessee Eastman Chemical Company trying to fi nd a tough acrylate polymer for jet canopies. One day a fellow researcher, ironically named Dr. Fred Joyner, spread a fi lm of ethyl cyanoacrylate between two prisms of a refractometer in order to see if it would refract light. It didn’t refract light, and the two men discovered it was impossible to pry the prisms apart again. They feared they’d be in trouble for ruining the expensive equipment, but the company realized the potential in the new adhesive. The glue went on the market in 1958 under the name Eastman Compound #910. Dr. Coover even appeared on the quiz show “I’ve Got a Secret” where he lifted host Gary Moore completely off the fl oor using a single drop of the glue.• Cyanoacrylate is chemically known as C5H5NO2, but scientists call it CA for short. It’s a highly reactive substance, but the addition of a bit of acid stabilizer prevents the CA from reacting and keeps it in a liquid state. When the acid stabilizer comes into contact with a catalyst, its stabilizing effect is neutralized. • This allows the CA molecules to react with each other, forming long polymer chains. The catalyst for the acid stabilizer

is hydroxyl ions, which are located in every molecule of water. Every surface has a tiny amount of water on it, and there are always miniscule amounts of water available in the air. The water acts like a trigger, allowing the molecular structure of the CA to change. The molecules join up like a long series of popper beads. What was a thin liquid becomes a hard mass of molecular spaghetti noodles. • If the parts being glued are moved during the formation of the chains, the chain is broken and the glue won’t hold. It bonds best when used at the rate of one drop per square inch. More than that will require a longer bonding period. It’s tough enough that a single square-inch bond can lift one ton.• Why doesn’t super glue stick to the bottle? Because it needs moisture to set and there is no moisture in the bottle.• In Vietnam, soldiers were given tubes of super glue in their fi rst aid kits to help seal wounds. Special kinds of super glue are now used in hospitals worldwide, reducing the need for sutures, stitches, and staples. It doesn’t work on deep wounds or on wounds where the skin does a lot of stretching. • Super glue is now being used in forensic detection. When investigators open a foil packet of ethyl-gel cyanoacrylate, the fumes settle on skin oils left behind in human fi ngerprint, turning the invisible smear into a visible object.• Glued your fi ngers together? Use nail polish remover. Don’t have any nail polish remover? Use warm soapy water and a bit of patience. Your sweat and natural skin oils will soon loosen the bond.
