Scanlines / Now until 5 AprilMcAleese Gallery, Artspace Mackay. Keeping in the spirit of Media Art Practice, Scanlines is an experimental project that integrates exhibition with new media education, and is derived from the database www.scanlines.net (Media Art in Australia since the 1960s). The database is an evolving resource dedicated to information relating to artists, works and events that have Australia-wide and international significance. It links to substantial materials (biographical information, videos, catalogue essays, artists’ notes, résumés, stills, etc) pertinent to the history of media art in Australia. Material on this site has been drawn together from several important archives relating to media art, including the dLux MediaArts d/Archive, the archives of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and the Stephen Jones Archive of Art & Technology in Australia. Scanlines aims to dissect the history of Media Art in Australia in order to inform and up-skill the next generations of media practitioners. Media Art is often considered a construct of the 21st century but as this series of education modules explores, this subject area has a rich history dating back well over fifty years. Nature’s Reverse Pallet an exhibition by Kim Bagot / 1 April – 3 May. Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Lagoons Gallery. As a Botanical Illustrator and an Environmental Scientist, Kim is intrigued by the beauty that plants display. The arrangement of leaves, the complexity of a flower or a combination of both, these are the architectural features of her illustrations. The theme of Kim’s exhibition is to create monochromatic impressions of the architectural features. Reversing the beauty of the colour to black and white, she achieves this through the traditional mediums used by the Botanical Illustrator, Graphite, Pen and Ink. Kim uses mainly two techniques in her artworks, that of stippling for precise depiction of the plants features and secondly, graphite rendering to depict the natural softness of subject features. Transparent: Watercolour in Queensland 1850 – 1980 / 10 April – 17 May. McAleese Gallery, Artspace Mackay. Watercolour was most often the medium of choice in documenting the early years of European settlement. As the nineteenth century progressed and as the colony grew, a dialogue developed between a lively group of semi-naive artists and the emerging professional ranks of artists and teachers. At this time, artists also began to look overseas for inspiration, travelling to Europe to study, and, in turn, encouraging the dissemination of modernist art and ideas back home in Queensland. For more than 150 years, watercolour painting has enlivened artistic life in Queensland. In ‘Transparent’, this is revealed in the considerable achievements of Queensland’s watercolour artists, who occupy a significant place in Australian art history. The regional tour of ‘Transparent’ continues the Queensland Art Gallery I Gallery of Modern Art’s longstanding commitment to making art accessible for all Queenslanders. Bodywork: Australian Jewellery 1970-2010 / 22 May – 5 JulyJewellers preside over the manipulation of materials and the transformation of their meaning and value. Design involves working on a small scale in relation to the intimate site of the human body and exercising advanced craft skills to bring a variety of materials together as desirable and durable objects. The juxtaposition of materials, the recycling of objects and the subversion of traditions can also bring a new understanding to familiar forms and imbue everyday materials with a poetic presence. This exhibition includes the work of 42 Australian jewellers exploring jewellery from a number of viewpoints within six broad themes: Romanticism, Interpreting the Vernacular, Encapsulating Nature, Technics, Social Message and Sculpture for the Body. All of the works are from the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. For more information contact Artspace Mackay on 4961 9722.

Commemorating 100 Years of ANZAC

The ANZAC Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians. Between 2014 and 2018, Australia will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War. Importantly, during the ANZAC Centenary, we will remember not only the original ANZACs who served at Gallipoli and the Western Front, but commemorate more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and women.

In our region, Mackay Regional Council has been working with the Mackay RSL Sub-Branch to actively promote, encourage and support ANZAC Centenary initiatives and events across the Mackay region including:
