EDITOR’S LETTER

Dear Trendsetters,

“And they lived happily ever after”. Yes indeed!

Thank God even Disney no longer tries to sell us that story!!

Yet the story of love lives on in each and every one of us; males or females, young or old, optimistic or broken hearted, we all believe in and live for love.

At the end of the day, love is one of the greatest reasons for our existence. To experience it, share it and spread it…

This month bring our ‘Weddings’ issue.

I dedicate it to all those who love…

And there is no human being who doesn’t.

So here’s to you,

Zeina Mokaddam

SARAH RAJI

I am such a romantic, so putting this issue together was oodles of enjoyment for me! I was fortunate enough to meet great people (whose interviews you’ll read in this issue) and go through the motions of planning a wedding- without actually having one. As little girls, we spend hours dreaming about the big day, but it is important to remember that the real life starts after the hazy dreams. Keep your head in the clouds and your feet on the ground!

SIMON BALSOM

We’re incurable romantics, and enjoy nothing more than a big wedding. They say; “It’s the bride’s day”. Sure. Let them believe that if they want but, truth be told, weddings are the best reasons we’ve ever discovered for pushing the boat out while shopping and coming home ready to dress our very best. And, in these litigious times, we’ve also discovered greatest pre-nuptial agreement in the world – it’s called ‘love’. It’s really that simple.

HIND NASSAR

“For better or for worse... till death do us part” a sacred bond that links two souls that complete each other. As this season is filled with weddings, engagements and ceremonies, we decided to bring you the latest tips and tricks to look your best on your big day. May your lives be filled with nothing but love and purity. To our newlyweds, congratulations! All the happiness in the world awaits you and to our single readers, may you find your other halves whom will understand your wishes, desires, fears and dreams.

CHADI MOUFIED

It’s May—the month that signals the official start of wedding season. Whether you’re getting married in a month or in a year from now (or even if you’re just planning on being an excellent bridesmaid or a guest at your friend’s wedding), we have created the ultimate wedding guide just for you. This issue we are celebrating weddings. We’re celebrating the union of love and we hope you enjoy reading them as much as we have enjoyed working on them.

Dream Gowns for Dream WeddingsPronovias

When it comes to bridal gowns, Pronovias is in a league of its own. With 163 stores internationally and over 4000 points of sale, it is not hard to see why Pronovias is the go-to store for brides. The line started in 1922 Barcelona, in the prestigious boutique El Suzio. Catalonian brides were renowned for their luxurious tastes, which Pronovias was eager to provide. The family-owned brand used the finest silks, embroidery, and lace (all hand-crafted) that lead to the launch of Spain’s first prêt-a-porter bridal gowns in 1968. The brand expanded, and with Pronovias establishing itself as the first-ever bridal store in Spain, international expansion was only inevitable. Pronovias asserted its presence in France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Latin America. Throughout the final decades of the 20th century, Pronovias opened in North America, and erected its flagship store in New York City, a seven-storey building in the heart of 52nd street and 5th Avenue.

COVER STORY

What makes Pronovias so popular is its intricacy and dedication to detail. One team of designers, pattern makers, model-makers, and seamstresses combine their talents with the goal of making a memorable bride. The design team firsts drafts sketches of gowns, the materials and cuts of which must be carefully explained in excruciating detail to the model-makers. Then it becomes the responsibility of the pattern makers to gather all materials and pieces, and assemble them on a mannequin to create a physical “draft” of the dress. Because Pronovias only uses the finest materials, the testing phase of the dress is, or toile, is usually made by using materials that are shy of the real ones. The final step is a combined effort of

Page 21: Issue 62 may 2014

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 19

the entire team, where the paper version of the approved dress is made. Every element of the dress is cut out of special paper on which details regarding embroidery, stitching, and cutting are written to ensure perfection in execution. Some dresses have over 300 parts, so it is not unusual for the paper cutting process to take over eighty hours. The end result, of course, is a stunning gown that can only be produced by the highly luxurious Pronovias.

2015 is Pronovias’s 50th anniversary, and the respective Atelier Pronovias and Pronovias lines reflect the company’s history and future in its cleanly cut lines, flowing materials, and subtle details. Atelier Pronovias stands out from

Page 22: Issue 62 may 2014

20 THETALK / May / 2014

other lines because of its unique elements. Some designs are separated into two pieces, allowing for more combinations and fresh looks for trendy brides. Atelier Pronovias also uses new materials, such as Ottoman silk and French lace, combined with the Pronovias staple, tulle. Vintage accessories also make appearances through flapper-inspired headpieces.

The Pronovias 2015 line deviates from the norm by incorporating other colours into its bridal gowns, such as pink, apricot, and beige. Mikado silk is a new material that, coupled with gauze, tulle, and crepe, creates truly unforgettable silhouettes and designs. The standard attention to detail Pronovias boasts makes its mark on bridal gowns, as the collection’s finest work is in the details: embroidered bodices, lace hem and necklines, and precise cuts.

Pronovias continues to be the ultimate destination for any bride, because it never fails to create gowns suitable for a bride with any taste, ranging form modern, to romantic, to simple, and to daring. Pronovias continues to consolidate its position as a global leader of the bridal sector year after year. It started out as a family business in Barcelona in 1922 and is now the world’s leader in bridal gowns, present in more than 105 countries with 164 stores and more than 4,000 sales points.

Oroub Al-Abdaly, Noor Al-Baghli and Basma Al-Baghli are the founders and managing partners of Yalwah. Yalwah started off as a directory website and blog dedicated to all things weddings, events, and celebrations in Kuwait to serve clients in a luxurious niche market. The website gathered the best vendors and top quality services, which was key to make Yalwah on top. Yalwah then developed itself into an umbrella company, under which fell three respective entities. The first is the website, the third is the wedding and event planning portion, and the third and most recent addition is the VIP concierge service and bridal consultations.

How did you start?

The official launch of the Yalwah website was on the 12th of December 2012, and we introduced ourselves to the public as a directory and blog. We began to progress into the two other entities all under one umbrella. We started because of our passion and attention to details. Planning events and weddings was a hobby for us and we often helped our friends and family out of enjoyment, not business. It was casual, but then we decided to become professional and attained a license. Attaining the license was a bit difficult, but I advise young entrepreneurs of Kuwait to acquire legality, because that establishes the company as reliable and high-end.

What is the most important thing about a wedding?

The most important thing is that the bride likes everything! The bride herself must not be surprised in any way; she should know everything from a-z to avoid anxiety and tension. The wedding should be happy, and this does not necessarily stem from riches and luxury. There are two side of the wedding: the bride’s party, and the audience. All the people must be satisfied and pleased, because really, a wedding is a happy occasion and no one should be distraught. Our first campaign was happiness is on its way to you. That is the message we want to be remembered for.

What does the name Yalwah mean?

Yalwah is a traditional regional event, which is the henna night before the wedding. The yalwah is the first celebration that a bride does, and it is the first step of entering happiness: yalwah, milcha, and then the wedding. We want to be the first step towards that happiness.

Happiness can come just as easily as anger. How do you deal with bridezillas?

Oh, bridezillas are our specialty! Dealing with stressed and anxious brides on a daily basis makes us their therapists, and we tend to absorb that anger because we try to bond with the bride by going to her house and getting a feel for her and her family. Even if a bride has a moment of anger, we totally understand because we have been through this before. You can’t stop a bride from worrying, but if we guide her carefully and give her support as well as help her family, she will eventually calm down

and remember that a wedding is the happiest of occasions.

What is the Yalwah touch?

It is very classic and timeless. We have more of vibe then a touch, since we are organizers and the designers are more responsible for that first impression than we are. Our touch is not visual, but you will find special things here and there, such as our signature tree instead of a guest book. Yalwah specializes in harmony and seamless transitions.

Your VIP Concierge service is all the rage in Kuwait. What can you tell us about it?

Our VIP concierge service has developed over time and demand that has developed over the span of our business. Basically, we try to meet the difficult requests of our clients. Some might want a seat in a certain fashion show, or a limited couture gown, or a celebrity singer, and all of that is a phone call away. We have high

Page 26: Issue 62 may 2014

24 THETALK / May / 2014

demands on honeymoon bookings, which we are known for because of our competitive prices and great destinations. It is not just a regular concierge service; it is an international one as well. We also have bridal consultations, which is when we take care of the brides from a-z. Brides come to us after getting engaged, and we take care of everything from her makeup, hair, dress, to honeymoon bag. We close the bag according

to her destination, and we provide her with a checklist that she can fill. We then give a special Yalwah gift as a reward for getting through the entire ordeal.

What keeps you energetic and passionate?

Being content with what you have achieved at your age makes you very happy. Age is just

a number, and it’s more about the soul. We segregate ourselves from the material world and see ourselves as happy souls. It is the Yalwah spirit; people like to deal with us because we have a vibe and we radiate positive energy. We are happy, fresh, and comfortable, which is how we want our clients to feel. Achieving comes from dreaming!

The canoPY kuWaiTLulwa Al-Shaheen and Fatima Al-Yaseen

LOCAL INTErVIEW

Page 29: Issue 62 may 2014

Lulwa Al Shaheen and Fatima Al-Yaseen are Kuwait University College of Business graduates with degrees in accounting. They are the owners of The Canopy Kuwait, the first themed canopy rental company in Kuwait. They provide all the tents and accessories for the canopies, and they have different themes to suit each client’s specific needs. The Canopy started with the Summer Canopy, followed by the Love Canopy. When ramadan started, they created the Arabian Canopy, and finally with the start of the cold Kuwaiti winter, they began marketing the Winter Canopy. The tents come in two options: indoor and outdoor, and the only difference is the size. Lulwa and Fatima also take advantage of their business and use their resources to experiment and create new designs, with Lulwa using a grander version of the Love Canopy in her own recent wedding.

Each tent is created to serve a different purpose. The Winter Canopy is meant to instill warmth, so the materials Lulwa and Fatima chose correspond to this purpose. The colour scheme is dark and cozy, so the floors are dark purple, the tables are wooden, the materials are thicker and heavier than the other tents, and they have included a campfire simulation to add to the overall effect. The Love Canopy has a completely white interior, which makes it very popular amongst the bridal crowd. The Summer Canopy is very popular during Chalet season, because it includes all beach necessities such as beach chairs, towels, and protection from the strong summer sun; and naturally it complies to a summer-friendly colour scheme by making use of yellows and blues. Finally, the Arabian Canopy follows a traditional Kuwaiti décor by featuring a sandooq, antique lanterns, and several mubkhar decorated to look like candleholders, all in the name of keeping the atmosphere Arabian. In total, there are four themed canopies to choose from.

Lulwa and Fatima have been best friends since middle school, and they both shared an entrepreneurial spirit. They make the most of their friendship, since they both have different perspectives and often tend to notice certain details that the other had not. They knew they

had the drive and the ambition, but they hadn’t yet realized their exact idea. It was not until a university project had them become event planners that they realized the idea of a canopy business was very plausible. Lulwa states that she had not imagined the canopy business would flourish so much in Kuwait, but she says with pride that Kuwait is very supportive of small businesses and young entrepreneurs. Most of their clientele are young women, according to Fatima, and mothers’ day was a recent success for them with many clients ordering the Love Canopy. Most of their major competitors are men, so clients tend to express shock that two young Kuwaiti women are able to manage opening tents and driving to locations, etc. As their company grew, they hired employees to help them set up and reach far locations. However, Fatima says that she and Lulwa ensure they visit each site so that they add their personal touches.

When it comes to their reception in Kuwait, they stand out from other young women who follow less industrial business ideas. Lulwa and Fatima make use of their femininity and tap into their interior decorating instincts, because a woman’s touch really shows. They noticed oftentimes that competitors would tend to mimic their designs in subtle ways, which they took as a compliment. It is all in the details, according to Fatima, and competitors tend to follow a standard without many details. They love what they do, and it is a hobby more than work for them. When they first

started, they faced a lot of challenges. Fatima was a newlywed at the time, and she had to balance education, work, and marriage. Lulwa mentions that finding a committed driver was just as difficult, because The Canopy is a very hands-on business and drivers must be ready to put up and take down the tents, as well as be willing to drive to far-off locations. With their respective families’ help, they bought a car for The Canopy, and have been able to keep up with clients’ demands.

The future of The Canopy Kuwait lays in a café with a multitude of different types of canopies that can be reserved either separately or altogether. Lulwa and Fatima say that it was only with willpower and tenacity that they were able to keep building their company. Oftentimes, one was exhausted and wanted to throw in the towel, but the other was always there to provide support during a time of heavy stress. They love what they do, and the passion coupled with support from friends and family helped them reach their current level. Fatima advises all young entrepreneurs not to think of the obstacles, and meet each challenge with a clear mind. Lulwa says that it’s important to be energetic and not lose sight of the main goal. They went with the flow, and that they never at one point felt men were superior to them in any way. They found success through time management and positivity. You can find their designs on www.smallq8/the-canopy and on their Instagram, @TheCanopy_Kw.

Describe the Lanvin bride.A kaftan for the bride in the sunshine, a trench coat for the bride in a hurry, a tulle cardigan for the romantic bride, anembroidered collar on tulle for the flirtatious bride, a bubble dress for lazy days. They are all Lanvin brides!

What is the philosophy behind Lanvin Blanche?I have first created wedding dresses for my friends, some clients and sometimes even for colleagues. I have launched a collection of wedding gowns in 2008, especially designed for women who want to say “I do”, each in her own style, and why not more than once? “Blanche” is a tribute to Marie-Blanche, Jeanne Lanvin’s unique daughter and muse. And also for the color-symbol of a wedding day… Jeanne Lanvin created wedding gowns too. The oldest and certainly the first we have in our archives, is dated on the year 1911. She made wedding dresses for a lot of royal bride-to-be’s like Grace Kelly, and also for great artists.

What is the mood of the collection this year?Lanvin Blanche 2014 is designed for everyone who loves fairytales and girly stories, with fifteen Couture dresses to wear for the best day of their life! Colours are as pure as first love: white, ivory, eggshell, powder, oatmeal and putty.

Each detail of a Lanvin dress is carefully considered to ensure the most striking silhouette. What are the key details for this collection? The first dress of the collection is created from metres and metres of net, flared from the waist, creating a fairytale look. Another gown contrasts with the sobriety of a strapless model adapted from the show and moulded with neoprene, highlighting the modern material used.

What signature Lanvin elements make an appearance?Fabrics are as sensual as the occasion demands: silk, washed faille, crisp tulle, taffeta, lace, organza and muslin. This is one of the main signatures at Lanvin - the beautiful materials used.

Are Lanvin Blanche’s creations inspired by the Lanvin prêt-a-porter line?« Blanche » dresses are new creations or reinterpretations of silhouettes from past collections. I always enjoy imagining them because they are made with the most exquisite materials. They have to be contemporary and elegant pieces, and a reflection of the personality.

What should a bride-to-be keep in mind when selecting a gown for her special day? Most of all, it has to reflect her personality. She has to feel happy and comfortable in her dress. A woman always remembers her emotions about the dress she wore for one of the most beautiful day of her life.

It is with mixed feelings of surprise, and astonishment that the gracious princess walks through the aisles of the palace, and discovers a place glowing with royal opulence and yet holding an air of modernity.

It is within the castle’s main ballroom that Kadi’s collection makes its debut: from the ambient pastel colors, the lace embroideries covering the tables, and flowers held into dramatic bouquets by silk ribbons to the bead embroidered curtains and extravagant chandeliers, it is in a context of lavish royalty that the collection unfolds and sets a mood of anticipation for the latest creations of the designer.

Rami Kadi’s collection for this season sets itself in refined standards of elegance, where exquisite cuts are produced on new and innovative fabrics: Tulle, Silk Crepe, Organza, Mikado, and Lace are married into dramatic volumes and refined shapes. In line with his previous collections, this latest creation sets yet another milestone in Kadi’s career, and creates anticipation for future releases.”

The new spirit of “Madly Yours” is vibrant and joyously iconoclastic. Maha Al Otaibi dawns an uplifting, ultra-feminine moment that triumphs experimentation over timid trend-following and brings women together for her “Madly Yours” opening at Harvey Nichols in Grand Avenues.

Tell us more about “Madly Yours”. How and when did you start it?

I started this collection because of my acne. In the 90s, my doctor introduced me to minerals and how to apply powder to protect the skin from the sun because I have a very sensitive skin. I wanted to help Arab women find the correct foundation for their skin. So this is how it all began!

What was your main inspiration?

I have always been in love with colors especially earth colors. They are very captivating and they always look great each season. I think it’s glamorous and natural at the same time. You can wear it with almost anything and still look good. I also got inspired by the beauty of minerals and how it can be so beneficial for your skin. So I worked hard to make it work. I think it’s very natural and it helps women see their natural beauty and that’s what’s important.

Tell us about your collections.

We have different spring and summer collections. Every two months, we have a new collection; sometimes a change of color or just the production of lighter shades of this color. I also love mixing colors and it really depends on what women want. We’re not just focused on foundation; we have lipsticks, eye shadow, eye liner, lip liners, all kinds of foundation and palettes, mascaras, etc. Nowadays, they keep

requesting different colors based on fashion and the designer brands and what they have in store. So let’s say the theme for spring is floral then we go for earthly colors and pastels.

Can you tell us more about the trending makeup for weddings and brides this season?

When it comes to bridal, I always like to go with the natural look to go with the white dress. It brings out women’s beauty and strong features. It always pops their eyes. I also love focusing on eye lashes more instead of eye shadow because it makes a statement. I would go for pastels – peachy, pinkish, and pearl colors for sure. I would also suggest silvery and golden touches. In terms of bridal, we’re talking makeup and not fashion and that’s the beauty of it because it’s not dependent on something else; it has its own entity which is that brides should always look natural and pretty.

In your opinion, which is the most important makeup item?

I would have to say foundation for sure! Foundation gives you base and tone for your skin. It also gives a fresh look. It is very important

for every woman to find the right foundation that matches her skin because then she’ll know exactly how to manipulate it and play around it. It makes you look flawless and that’s very important! Some people say lipstick; but for me, I think the base is the most important because it holds everything together.

Where do you see yourself in the near future?

I see myself going global! If we keep bringing the right thing to women and if we keep working so hard for this brand, I believe I will!

Do you have any makeup tips to share with our readers?

Use mineral foundation and you will learn the trick. It is very natural and flawless; you can sleep and wake up in it and you still look just as good. It’s beneficial for your skin as well and you don’t have to wash it off!

Mineral foundation has suddenly taken on the role that lipstick and nail polish used to play alone, “Madly Yours” makeup provides a wide range of products help to bring out the natural beauty of every woman.

GreaT exPecTaTionsMila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher are getting hitched and having a baby!

HER & HIS STYLE ICON

Page 63: Issue 62 may 2014

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 61

Fans of That 70s Show will remember Jackie and Kelso’s on-screen chemistry as one of the best things about the show. Now, eight years after the series finale, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis rekindle their flame with the recent news of their engagement. The long-time friends were rumored to be dating since April 2012, and they kept it no secret. They took luxurious romantic vacations together in destinations like Bali, and they are constantly caught engaging in PDA. The couple has been friends since the 90s, but each of them developed respectively as actors and style icons.

In 1983, Mila Kunis was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine to a physics teacher mother and a mechincal engineer father. Her family moved to Los Angeles when Kunis was 7, citing religious freedom as their main reason for the move. Two years later at the age of 9, her father enrolled her in acting school. Her first audition landed her a role in a Barbie commercial, and in 1994 she made it on primetime television with minor appearances in Days of Our Lives and Baywatch. When Kunis was 14 in 1998, she was cast as Jackie Burkhart in That 70s Show although the minimum audition age was 18. Her acting got her noticed by many agents, and she landed roles such as appearances in 7th Heaven and tenure as Meg griffin in Family Guy. He debut on the silver screen, however, was not as successful. She cites her early roles in films such as American Psycho 2 and Get Over It as “embarrassing” and “better for fans to forget about”. In 2008, director Judd Apatow cast her in a starring role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the positive reviews of which helped her gain popularity amongst Hollywood headhunters. In 2010, Mila Kunis broke out as a star with the theatrical release of the controversial Film Black Swan opposite Natalie Portman. In contrast to the dark mystery of Black Swan, Kunis was next cast in the romantic comedy Friends

Page 64: Issue 62 may 2014

With Benefits with Justin Timberlake. The film established Kunis’ range, showing that she can be asas serious as she is funny. To date, Kunis has earned 8 film awards, the most recent of which being an MTV Movie Award for her performance in Oz the Great and Powerful.

Ashton Kutcher’s rise to fame was a bit different than that of his fiancée. He was born in Iowa in 1978 and lived a very trouble adolescent live. His fraternal twin brother suffered many maladies, which lead Kutcher to suffer emotionally. He consequently wound up in trouble, and was even on probation for three years. In university he took up odd jobs such as working in the General Mills Cereal factory, but fortunately, a scout for a modeling agency scooped up the attractive young man and took him to New York City, where he modeled for names such a Calvin Klein and Abercrombie & Fitch. Later, he pursued his interest in acting by moving to Los Angeles. His first auditioned earned him the role of Michael Kelso in That 70s Show, and several large-scale films such as Dude Where’s My Car, Guess Who, My Boss’ Daughter, and The Butterfly Effect. Although Kutcher was confident on screen, he had several contingency plans and invested in startups such as Skype and Foursquare. Kutcher hosted his own show, Punk’d, which made him popular amongst young audiences, and his work in romantic comedies such as Killers earned him popularity amongst older audiences. He was named in Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People in 2010.

Kutcher was in the spotlight later in life than Kunis, so he was able to skim over the awkward 90s teen looks. His style starts in 1997 with ironic tees and casual red carpet looks, which swayed into more mature business casual looks as he rose to prominence. However, it was his well-documented relationship with Demi Moore

that pushed Kutcher to become a surprise male style icon. His well-tailored suits, slacks, and button-downs and scruffy good looks did not die out with his relationship; he continues to shine on the red carpets and streets all the same. Consequently, Kunis’ style is more timeless than Kutchers: the East-European beauty plays with her assets such as her dark hair, olive skin,

and sultry eyes, and makes the most out of her natural looks. She opts for the effortlessly sexy, and tends to lean towards more neutral colours and shades, such as blacks, whites, and beiges. As a couple, Kunis and Kutcher complement each others’ opposite looks, and with a baby on the way, we wish the couple the happiest of futures!

Nothing brings out your inner DIYer more than planning a wedding. Qasim Dashti understands this better than anyone and has ideas that will appease any bride. In an exclusive interview, THETALK discovers the passion and determination that have made him one of Kuwait’s most wanted wedding planners.

it’s a pleasure to be with you! Please tell us about yourself.

The pleasure is all mine. My name is Qasim Dashti, and I am both a wedding planner and a florist. I love décor and flowers respectively, and I was a successful florist with my own shop. I believe that it is important to hold all the strings, and if I were to be successful in my own field, I would need to have a say in all fields. This is what exposed me to wedding planning. If I could plan the wedding, then I would have the freedom to incorporate as much flower as I want. The bases of all my décor was- naturally- flowers. At first, I only worked on the bride and groom’s seat, but then I expanded to include more elements of the wedding such as photography, furniture, lighting, venue, catering, and even tiny details like plates and the uniforms of the servants. I found that everything was interlinked, and I needed to have a grasp on all the aspects of the planning to maintain harmony.

Do you have an educational background in floristry or wedding planning?

Yes, actually, I studied fine art and art history here in Kuwait. What I learned the most was that the beauty of a space is found in a perfectly arranged mis-en-scene. The balance is very important when it comes to colour and symmetry, and proper use of space is a key element that can be often overlooked.

In your opinion, what is the most memorable thing about a wedding?

What makes people remember a wedding is a

signature element that enchants attendees. For example, Kuwait is a desert environment and when a wedding contrasts that by incorporating greenery and lush flowers, the image resonates in the memories of people who are typically accustomed to barren deserts and a lack of flora and fauna. I sometimes find that it is a challenge to enchant the wedding guests because Kuwaitis are some of the most tasteful people in the world. Because Kuwaitis are well-travelled, they see the beauty or respective elements of design in different places such as Beirut or Paris and come back home wanting to incorporate what they saw into their own weddings. To me, it always comes back to the use of flowers.

What makes a Qasim Dashti wedding?

I always lean towards simplicity. Simple is always elegant, because when you have a large and simple setting, you can display stunning pieces that will not overwhelm guests or take away from another piece. You can spend vast amounts of money on expensive and glamorous pieces, but to me, it always boils down to being timeless in your taste. Oftentimes, overwhelming weddings can come off as nouveau riche, because the urge to display wealth trumps the urge to display taste.

Have you ever done weddings outside of Kuwait? What are the differences?

Yes, I have done weddings in Bahrain and in Dubai, and the differences in taste are evident. In other Gulf countries, weddings are typically more expensive than they are in Kuwait; yet Kuwaiti weddings look grander. I believe that this is because Kuwaitis are heavily influenced by the Lebanese.

What is the biggest difference in terms of décor between a segregated wedding and a mixed wedding?

I feel that mixed weddings have a more natural

aura to them, and they are more flexible. It is true that there are fewer details, but the environment is prettier. I personally encourage mixed wedding, as we do go to mixed malls, restaurants, even work environments, so why do we stop at weddings?

Have you ever worked with a difficult bride? How do you deal with the like?

Plenty! To me, organizing is a challenge. It’s easy if the client has taste that she is confident in and asks me to render her vision. The more difficult clients are the ones who do not know what they want. Usually Kuwaitis have a vision in mind and come prepared with examples. I play the amateur psychologist and study the personality to discover what she likes. Other times, I show her some of my previous work, and wait for her reaction. A wedding planner is a profession which requires patience and compassion because I am in the business of creating beauty and happiness. The most important person to me is the bride herself, as she is the one who is going to have her wedding in memory for years to come. This job is very hard as it is full of stress and tension, but once I organize myself according to the time limit that i have and know what my client wants, success comes floundering in.

What is your favourite thing about a wedding?

The lighting is very important, and the bride of course. To me, the wedding complements the bride, not the other way around. I like to see the bride’s dress to make sure that the theme matches and the décor will only be a muted representation of her appearance. Weddings are a source of joy, love, and happiness, so it is very important that every last detail will reflect the atmosphere in the photographs years to come.

invisaliGn is The neWesT PracTical anD invisible orThoDonTic TreaTmenTDr. Salem Al Anzi, Dentist

LOCAL INTErVIEW

Dr. Salem Al Anzi is an orthodontic consultant at Sama Dental Center. He holds a Master’s Degree in Orthodontics from Boston University, USA in 1986.He was the first dentist in Kuwait to become a licensed Invisalign dentist in 2001. MEN’S PASSION interviewed him for more insight on Invisalign as compared to the traditional metal braces.

What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics is a major treatment in dentistry. The process involves aligning teeth to treat the malocclusion of crowded or irregularly spaced teeth, in addition to maintaining an appropriate relation between the teeth and jaws in terms of shape and size. Orthodontics caters to a variety of cases of re-alignment; the most recent among which is Invisalign’s clear aligners.

What makes Invisalign unique?

Invisalign is a hardly noticeable aesthetic orthodontic appliance as the trays are transparent and almost invisible; they can be easily removed, cleaned, sterilized and re-attached. Subsequently, this allows maintaining dental hygiene just like always with a reduced potential of gum infections. The trays can be removed to eat normally and hassle-free, as they are detachable.

This is extremely important for people with job or social obligations that prevent them from wearing metal braces.

What’s the ideal age for clear aligners?

This is an all-age product. Since, 1997, more than a million and a half people aged between 17 and 75 used this technique in the U.S. and Europe. Adolescents aged between 12 and17 can also use this treatment.

Why would someone resort to clear aligners and do they differ from traditional braces?

Invisalign is a treatment based on science and developed leveraging on the scientific research and clinical expertise of a large group of Orthodontic specialists, biotechnologists and information technologists according to prominent standards of accuracy, health, safety and aesthetics.

Furthermore, Invisialign are designed to be detachable any desired time whilst traditional braces are fixated on teeth and cannot be removed until the treatment is over.

How do trays influence speech or other functions and do they generally suit patients?

Clear aligners are convenient and suit the lifestyle of many patients; the mouth shape is not altered; and articulation is not influenced and the patient’s social and career life is preserved intact. Whereas traditional braces give an impression of a protruded mouth or lips for certain patients as the braces stay in the mouth; moreover, some patients find it hard to articulate

some letters at the beginning of the treatment with traditional braces.

How are clear aligners more favorable in comparison with metal braces for eligible candidates?

Clear aligners are more hygienic and practical given their detachability. Teeth can be brushed and flossed. Food between the teeth will not accumulate to cause tooth decay or gum infection because of the braces or wires as might happen traditionally, in addition to the sharp-edged wires that might scratch or cut the gums, tongue or even lips.

Invisalign trays are made of smooth medical plastic. A licensed doctor first starts the treatment using this technique through digital imprints and images of teeth, which are sent to Invisalign laboratories to develop a treatment plan indicating how these teeth will appear before and after the treatment. A medical plastic tray is customized for the patient’s teeth, based on which the treatment cost is set based on the severity of the case. On the other hand, traditional braces would be measured and teeth would be evaluated after obtaining a clay mold for teeth in order for the metal braces to be fixated and only removed upon the end of the treatment.

maDe-To-measure A Personalized Approach to Lanvin Suits

An exquisite tailoring service that bridges the gap between modern cuts and heritage - this is today’s approach to contemporary classics.

More than simply altering a ready-made suit, the made-to-measure service for Lanvin is as much about the experience as it is about the final product. Its head tailor of the bespoke department, Julien Fouache, says that everything begins with a sample kit, the base that is then combined with the customer’s measurements, needs and desires. The Lanvin silhouette is characterized by its classicism and modern cut - it’s form fitting without compromising on comfort. In addition are the minute details curated by the customer himself, including the number of buttons, lapel variations, buttonholes and monogram placement and you have yourself a personalized Lanvin creation. To ensure that the optimum fabric is chosen, there is an impressive library made available, where the customer can view up to 1,500 fabric swatches, both permanent and seasonal options. After all, satisfying the customer’s every whim and fancy is part of the made-to-measure experience. Guided by Fouache, advice is given while options are explored to find harmony between the Lanvin aesthetic and the customer’s preferences. The toile, where the suit will rest on in its early stages, is quality personified - it is made from natural fibres including horsehair and camel hair, pure cotton thread and a lining made with pure bemberg.

The entire process takes up to seven weeks, of which includes three fittings, where even a fraction of a centimetre difference is made, if need be - that’s just part of Lanvin’s meticulous approach. What sets this service apart from its existing counterparts is the intimate experience. A

first visit with the tailor quickly develops into a conversation about how the customer defines himself and the message he wants to share with others. Without being invasive, the service not only crafts a perfectly fitted Lanvin suit, it also builds a rapport between the creator and the user, an often overlooked and underrated aspect of the experience. The process is collaborative and like all other good things in life, you get as much out of it as you put in. The Lanvin man is an individualist; he wants to be unique without sacrificing the slightest ounce of quality and finish. This is exactly what the Lanvin Made-to-Measure service encompasses - a synthesis of style and savoir-faire that is definitively Lanvin.

Since the mid-1980s, this service allows a way of personalizing men’s tailoring halfway between a full bespoke service and ready-to-wear clothing. The manufacturing process is also halfway as the initial elements are factory -produced with the final alterations made by hand.

The new watch becomes the latest in the vintage-inspired glashütte Original Seventies collection.

Tissot

PRS 516 Extreme

The sporty Tissot PRS 516 Extreme is based on a motorsport-inspired Tissot timepiece from the 1960s but adds some contemporary touches. The smooth lines of the case evoke the bodywork of modern automobiles and the details on the dial and bezel echo those on car dashboards.

The strap (available in leather or rubber) has a racing-stripe design with a honeycomb pattern reminiscent of an automobile’s ventilation system; there is also a version available that has the original model’s famous bracelet, with cut-out circles illustrating the steering wheels of racecars. The automatic movement, visible through a clear caseback, powers a chronograph and date display. The black PVD-coated stainless steel case is water-resistant to 100 meters.

These unique models take their name from the Latin word for feather, subtly hinting at the delicate design that accentuates the dial.

Among the most striking design elements of these 27 mm models are their mother-of-pearl dials that are available in natural white or blue - a hue that is created by coating the underside of a white mother-of-pearl piece with black paint. A soft, wavy pattern cast from the iconic claws on the bezel is engraved on the dial and recalls the gentle lines of a feather. The Maestria Lady round is unanimously praised by women, irrespective of age, social class, taste or character, since it appears to have universally appreciated qualities: modern while being traditional and refined, simple, but at the same time sophisticated, discreet, yet glittering, gentle and still full of energy. And that’s not all. Other strengths contribute to this acclaim: its round shape, its pure lines, the perfection of its finish and its pleasing detail. And also its versatility: thirteen models for a range that is guaranteed to bring luck. Whether its face is made up in black, white mother-of-pearl or silvered arabesque motifs, it retains the same sparkling smile. It remains equally appealing whether its body is covered in diamonds (66 on the case, 12 on the dial), steel, pink PVD or yellow PVD. Now part of Swatch group, Harry Winston have reaffirmed their commitment to fine watchmaking, and one has the feeling we are in the midst of witnessing classics in the making.

In the first of a short two-part series we look at their current perfect forms.

Avenue Classic Diamond Drops & Midnight Diamond Drops 39 mm

The House of Harry Winston introduces an enchanting new dial design that celebrates the brilliance and sparkle of the world’s finest diamonds. Like a pointillist painter, the gem-setter creates an intricate composition using only brilliant-cut stones, replacing colors with the sparkle of icy white gems. This enchanting canvas demonstrates the Harry Winston’s expertise in gem-setting and references the signature techniques used in the House’s fine jewelry creations: the near-invisible claw-setting on the chatons ensures that nothing distracts from the beauty of each diamond; diamonds are placed on the dial using a snow-setting, demonstrating the gem-setter’s skill and precision.

Histoire De Tourbillon 5

Harry Winston’s Histoire de Tourbillon is a sophisticated collection of limited edition timepieces dedicated to the craftsmanship of one of the most revered and complex horological complications. Launched in 2009, each Histoire de Tourbillon underscores Harry Winston’s continued pursuit of excellence in innovation, by presenting the tourbillion in a series of spectacular new forms.

Building on the technical challenges introduced

throughout the series – from Histoire de Tourbillon 1, which explores the movement and sculpture of the complication, to Histoire de Tourbillon 4, which seeks the next level of precision and performance – a powerful idea took shape: for the first time, the Histoire de Tourbillon 5 would fully reveal the exceptional mechanism behind the tourbillon.

Midnight Moon Phase Automatic 42mm

The Harry Winston Midnight Collection derives its classic credentials from a rare balance between the distinct elements that make up an exceptional timepiece. Each has been conceived according to the role it is to play. The case evokes the iconic arches that define the façade of Harry Winston’s historic Fifth Avenue Salon – proclaiming its unmistakable heritage.

Like its predecessors, the Midnight Automatic and Midnight Big Date, the Midnight retrograde Second Automatic 42mm exudes an understated elegance. Watchmaking tradition is expressed on its sunray satin-brushed silver-toned dial with two central hands expresses fine watchmaking tradition.

Project Z8

Carrying the lucky number 8, Project Z8 represents the latest model in Harry Winston’s innovative Project Z series, which showcases the House’s pioneering use of ZaliumTM. Lighter, harder than titanium and extremely resistant to corrosion, ZaliumTM is a zirconium-base alloy exclusive to the House, and reflects its motto of “only the exceptional” in design. Its matte gunmetal gray color gives an unexpected and captivating gleam to this striking sporting timepiece.

harrY WinsTon

In 1989, building upon its legacy of fine jewelry design and innovation, Harry Winston ventured into the field of watch making. Ranging from exquisite diamond jewelry timepieces to high complication technical designs, Harry Winston timepieces maintain the company’s quest for excellence and commitment to quality without compromise, consistently earning international top industry awards. Harry Winston opened its own timepieces Manufacture in Geneva in 2007.

Premier chronoGraPh 40mm

Harry Winston loved women. In his eagerness to please them, he set out to adorn them with the most extraordinary precious stones. This original mindset is still embedded in the Harry Winston timepiece collections – as if the founder himself were still reading women’s hearts and fulfilling their wishes. The Premier Chronograph 40mm expresses the House’s jewelry tradition and creative virtuosity through subtle decorative motifs. Stemming from the House’s first timepiece collection, which launched in 1989, the Premier is the perfect blend of seduction and femininity. In its newest version, the House has preserved the same style codes of the iconic design, while giving free rein to its creative instincts. Let the magic begin. The volume of the rose gold case has been slimmed down to create a more elegant profile, while the 40 mm diameter gives this chronograph a defined presence on the wrist. The attachments, which recall the neo-classical arch defining the façade of Harry Winston’s historic Fifth Avenue Salon, have been redesigned for a smoother finish. generous diamonds of the finest quality are delicately handset, recalling the House’s iconic diamond creations. The crown is shaped like an exquisitely faceted gem, proudly celebrating Harry Winston’s fine-jewelry heritage. The stunning brown Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial radiates a seductive smoky effect, hovering between shades of warm brown and couture grey. The diamond-set appliques and indexes, ornate decoration, and the striking asymmetry of the various dials, combine to create a stunning visual rhythm on the dial.

Powered by a quartz movement, this chronograph has 12-hour and 30-minute counters, as well as small seconds at 6 o’clock. A shiny taupe alligator strap provides the perfect finishing touch, further enhancing the refinement and harmony of the design. Wish granted. Mr. Winston’s passion still guides our creative vision.

The acoustic poetry of timeA. Lange & Söhne presents the LANgE ZEITWERK STRIKINg TIME in pink goldThree high-pitched chimes and one lower-pitched tone are the sounds with which the LANGE ZEIT-WERK STRIKING TIME announceseach passing quarter and full hour. The first A. Lange & Söhne wristwatch with a chiming mechanism is now available in pink gold as well.

A. Lange & Söhne explored new avenues when it presented the LANgEZEITWERK STRIKINg TIME, its first chiming wristwatch, three years ago. Now, the resonant masterpiece with precisely jumping numerals is also available in pink gold with an argenté-coloured dial and pink-gold hands.

In the LANgEZEITWERK STRIKINg TIME, key chiming mechanism components are visibly integrated into the dial design. The black-polished steel hammers can be seen on either side of the subsidiary seconds dial: one on the right for the quarter hours and one on the left for the full hours. The two gongs, embedded in a recess between the dial and bezel, are also readily recognisable. Every 15 minutes, the mechanism triggers the striking of one of the two gongs. Three higher-pitched tones sound each quarter hour, while a low-pitched tone chimes the top of the hour. The chiming mechanism can be deactivated to prevent any disturbance during the night or at a meeting. A push piece at 4 o’clock raises the hammers and silences the watch. This process can be observed through the sapphire-crystal glass, so it is always apparent whether the mechanism is switched on or off.

With its precisely jumping numerals display, the new member of the LANGEZEITWErK family also repre-sents lucid design and crisp legibility. The large numerals of the adjacent hour and

minute indications enable the current time to be read clearly. In fractions of a second, the patented constant-force escapement advances the numerals minute by minute until the full hour when all three numeral discs jump forward simultaneously by exactly one increment. The LANgEZEITWERK STRIKINg TIME enriches the exciting interplay of numbers with a unique tone in a quarter-hour cadence for the wearer’s listening pleasure.

The heart of the LANgEZEITWERK STRIKINg TIME, the L043.2 manufacture calibre, fulfils all those expec-tations that watch connoisseurs legitimately associate with the name A. Lange &Söhne: its assets include the lavish decoration of all movement parts by hand as well as the balance wheel with eccentric poising weights and a proprietary Lange balance spring.

“The unique Swarovski sparkle not only lights up a woman on the outside, but also from the inside.”

Page 87: Issue 62 may 2014

WWW.THETALK-ONLINE.COM 85

The season’s new jewelry is tailored for the brave and bold. Swarovski’s Creative Director, Nathalie Colin talks Baselworld, new collections, and what she has in store for the future in an exclusive interview with THETALK magazine.

Could you please tell us a bit about Baselworld this year, have you launched anything special?

For BASEL 2014 we are launching a new line called “Crystalline Bangle”. The “crystalline bangle” is a very fashionable, innovative and modern piece due to its striking bracelet. The bangle holds a respectable amount of approx. 1800 crystals. In SS 14 the bangle will be launched in stainless steel and rose-gold PVD with clear crystals. And for the perfect Christmas gift, in FW 14 it will be introduced in the exciting color combination of black and light gold. Besides, the crystalline bangle, we are also launching the first interchangeable set. It is not only the first interchangeable set in the history of Swarovski watches but it is also designed by the famous jewelry designer Shourouk called “Swarovski by Shourouk”. The watch sets includes three different, fashionable bezels and three straps. It’s a beautiful piece think by women and for women.

What was your main inspiration for the Swarovski Spring Summer 2014 collection this year? The name of our ss14 collection is IMPRINTS our collection theme for SS14. When we started to work on this collection, ArT was the key inspiration, and most of all the origins of art: tribal and primitive arts, mixed with a modern and urban mood. Without doubt, consumers around the world are rediscovering Art as an inspiring antidote to the lingering crisis. But a multitude of influences enrich this new and innovative Swarovski collection; imprints from art, imprints from nature, imprints from cultures and crafts…, and all treated with a modern, feminine twist – our core signature! All these inspirations mix together to create a variety of unique and beautiful jewelry styles for every woman, and for easy everyday looks.

The brand has changed a lot in the past few years, could you tell us how exactly and where you see yourself in the near future?Actually, I pay a lot of respect to the heritage of Swarovski, and to the initial visionary approach of M. Daniel Swarovski who founded the company. My role as creative director is to define a creative

vision that set the path towards tomorrow, to define, enrich, and evolve Swarovski unique brand language that reflects in the coherency of the collections and in a matching product environnement as well. My focus is to keep on innovating & creating, to keep the initial visionary approach of Daniel Swarovski alive. Thanks to today’s innovation and modern resources, we can continue to nurture dreams that may personify in a different collection but that relate to the same dream, like in the beginning of the saga: enchanting our world with this magical material crystal! On one side, we have an heritage and values we need to protect, maintain, further evolve. On the other side, the world is changing and brands must adapt to this new environment and consumer tastes. It is my responsability to balance the heritage with the need for change, in a careful and respectful way. Concerning future, i don’t know, I still have so many things to do with Swarovski ! My philosophy is to live the present moment and to give the best of myself !

What was your favorite piece this collection?

For SS14 My favorite pieces belong to the AIRY family. These designs really show the key trends for the season: mixed gold platings, metal fringe and dangling elements, graphic compositions of crystal. And for the FW14/15 collection, that we present during the Paris Fashion Week, my favorite piece is the “StarDust” bracelet (a bracelet with crystal and nylon that we will sell in 20 different colors) is perfect both from a fashion point of view and accessible pricewise. And it is a piece that can work in any situation and for every fashion look; day to night, casual to more dressed up. We are very confident and we hope that, as the slake, it will become a “it”.

Do you have any special styling tips to share with our readers?

As I always advise: be yourself, do not try to copy fashion trend 100%, and dare, wear all with self-assurance. Jewellery has no rules! Try to find the piece which represent the best you and your style and makes you feel beautiful!

What is your favorite piece for evening wear?

Well it’s not easy to say. It all depends of the situation. Personally I love ring, necklace and cuff. I do not go out without a few oversized rings at

the right hand and hardly without a cuff. But when I have a dinner or a party I always try to find a piece that makes me feel beautiful, sparkling and that perfectly fit with my outfit! So it could be a necklace, a ring, a cuff or BOTH !

How would you describe the Spring Summer 2014 collection?

It’s a collection with extraordinary pieces for every day looks; unique designs that are on-trend and easy to mix and match, layer and combine. Crystal jewelry is not only for a special occasion, but can and should be worn every day. That’s why we more and more offer easy to wear pieces in a variety of sizes, colors and price points.

Could you share with us any information on what to expect this Fall Winter?

Of course! As I said previously, we introduced to the worldwide press our FW14/15 collection during the Paris Fashion Week! This new collection is called Facets of Light. As for the previous SS14 collection that took inspiration from the origins of art, we are still inspired by artistic expression. This collection is all about an artistic interpretation of how light and crystal can create magic and excitement. The metal and crystal together create light reflections that feel modern and attractive. Intense color combinations and patterns create chromatic vibrations and almost holographic effects.

On parting, she adds, “this shows how different FACTES OF LIGHT together with crystal create the unique Swarovski sparkle that light up awoman on the outside, but also from the inside.”

Indeed.

Style, with substance

What do you get when you take a Range Rover, add a beautiful interior and then turn the style up to 11? The Range Rover Evoque of course. Undeniably the most stylish of luxury SUVs, beneath the skin we discover there’s an SUV of significant substance.

When it was first unveiled in 2010, Victoria Beckham was announced as the range rover Evoque’s creative design director. It’s a decision that possibly made more sense then than it does now, but it was a clear signal from range rover that this was a car destined to be as at home on the chic streets of Paris and Milan as it is plugging across deserts and over mountain tops.

Instantly declared a fashion hit, the Evoque has undergone several style make-overs since being released in 2011, with the 2014 model looking the best of them all.

With its interior the Evoque brought a new dynamism and sparkle to the range rover marque. Surround yourself in cutting-edge design. The twin-stitched leather and the highly-finished dials reflect the attention to detail that has been spent on every element of the interior design.

You’ll notice the rotary gearlever dial, born in a Jaguar but fast becoming a feature of all automatic Jaguar-range rover cars, and surrounded by more neatly designed, smaller switchgear than in previous range rovers.

Land rover has trodden a careful path with the Evoque’s cabin. It would have been easy to over-glamorise it. Instead, it just errs towards the classy, without being overly bejewelled (except perhaps in the dials department).

GroominG WiTh GQ salonIt’s a little-known secret that great hair can be bought. Knowing what works best for you will ensure that you select the most appropriate products and use them effectively. And in order to know what works for you, it’s vital that you be familiar with hair care basics. Luckily, GQ salon breaks down the basics in the three big categories of hair & skin care for men: cleaning, styling and maintenance!

What are your best hair product treatments?

Shampoos are often classified according to hair type. Our best hair products would be Wella and System Professional (SP) because they are organic and work for most men. For Wella, we have shampoos, conditioners, hair creams, and gels. For SP, there’s more variety such as syrups, wax, hair masks, gels, mousse, sprays, creams, shampoos and conditioners as well.

What are the famous hair style trends for this summer?

It really depends on what each person likes and how and what works. However, usually people come in here wanting the same exact hairstyle and that is having long mohawk hair on top with shaved sides and back. This hairstyle is very in right now and everyone is going for it – alongside the beard! The beard gives a very manly look and it works for all occasions. All you need to do is style it differently depending on the occasion.

In your opinion, what are the most effective moisturizers and facial creams?

We have an organic line called “Image” for all the skin and it has categories underneath. It is specifically for the face and it protects it from the sun and it comes as both day and night facial creams. We have the “Max Cream” and the “Ornadic” and the “MD” for all skin care and they are for facial skin repair.

Can you give us tips for healthy hands and nails?

We provide manicure/pedicure to make the nails and skin softer and healthier and we offer our “Q Smart Spa” cream and scrub to help enhance the skin.

What hair tips can you give our readers?

- Always use conditioners after shampoos for softer hair.

- Hair masks are essential at least once a week.

- When applying gel, make sure to use organic ones avoid damaged hair. We provide “Bamboo Power Hold Gel”.

- Use our “rescue” cream with clean hair. Leave it overnight and wash it off in the morning to ensure healthier hair.

As the big day approaches, you are definitely on the edge of your seat. There are so many last-minute things to get done; who could possibly have the time? Don’t worry! We put together a wedding week bridal checklist to make sure nothing goes amiss on your special day.

HEALTH

7 Days-

Work out harder and longer to get that last bit of extra skin off your dream body. By now, you have been working long and hard to achieve that wedding dress figure, and adding in an extra hour will not only calm you, but tone your body even more.

6 Days-

Cleanse your face, but don’t get a full-on facial. You should have had your special bridal facial at least two weeks before the wedding, because extractions and rough scrubs tend to leave unwelcome marks on your face. Instead, sooth your skin and moisturize to guarantee an extra-special glow.

5 Days-

Say goodbye to salt! Now that you are 5 days away, you have to be careful not to consume too much salt. You don’t want to retain water and look bloated in your wedding dress, so now is as good a time as any to detoxify. This will not only cleanse your body of toxins, but it will also give you a clean, fresh look.

4 Days-

This is the worst part, but a bride’s gotta do what a bride’s gotta do! 4 days away from the wedding means it’s time to get all the waxing and hair removal out of the way. In case you went with laser hair removal earlier

on, give your doctor a visit and ask for a quick touch-up in case of any stray hairs. Any irritation this will produce will clear up just in time for the wedding.

3 Days-

Now that you have smooth skin, you want it to look radiant too! This is the best time to get a spray tan, in case you want to give yourself an extra oomph. This is the one spray tan in your life that you should splurge on, because you don’t want it to be streaky or orange. Find the best tanning salon in your area and invest.

2 Days-

The most overlooked detail is the most crucial one- your mani/pedi! Your ring finger is going to be wearing a diamond (we hope) crown today, so make sure it is at its most presentable. The colour you choose will stay in pictures for the rest of your life, so don’t go with a fad colour like orange or blue; stick to your Essie whites and you will be safe.

1 Day-

Aah! It’s here! Take a breather, and make sure you are confident, comfortable, and know that you are absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on making it through the stress, now go get yourself a massage and get a good night’s sleep in preparation for the big day. And remember: it is bad luck to see the groom before the wedding, so say your temporary goodbyes.

The rainforests are home to some of the most glori-ous flowers and trees known to man, with giant ferns and orchids of vibrant colours, the sights of which can only be complemented by the trilling of brilliantly coloured birds. Mangoes, ba-

nanas, coconuts, and papayas are indigenous to the tropical island, so you will have more than your fair share of the island’s bounty. St. Lucia has a rich history of colonialism and war, making it a historic sight alive with the battles and con-quests of its past. Western St. Lucia’s sights will take your breath away, as through its twisting forests lay marvelous breaks of land. The island is very small- it is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, which means you will be able to explore every inch of it and still have enough time left over to explore its underwater world.

The island is a great place for an adventure because of all the different activities there are

available. For those who enjoy trekking, the Tet Paul Nature Trail is a marvel for urban eyes. In case you are into aquatic activities (which ought to be true, since you’re vacationing on an island!), give Snuba a try- it is a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling, and gives you a chance to swim with the fish meanwhile not straying too far away from shore. The reef Kite and Surf activity is a must- St. Lucia is best seen from a parasailer’s point of view! For a more leisurely day, visit the memorable St. Lucia Golf and Country Club, a prestigious address were you can ride horses, take Segway tours of the city, and, of course, play golf. The real beauty of St. Lucia, however, is in its beaches.

Anse Chastanet is easily one of the more beau-tiful beaches of this vast world; the sheltered bay is hidden from the rest of the island by tall cliffs and secret coves that make the experi-ence as intimate as it is beautiful. and you would want to spend all your time in the hotel instead of roaming the Island. Mohamed Omar Khalil showcased his exhibition “50 Years of Printmaking” on Wednesday the 23rd of April at the Contemporary Art Platform (CAP). The works, many of which had never been exhibited before, present an alternative reading of the artist’s entire career, not only as a traveler between cultures and epochs, but as re-interpreter of the meaning of visual culture in general: He attempts to re-locate sensorial experience elsewhere than with the pure colors that characterize the postmodern, hereby searching in the black, for a warmer place where his book of art and life meets the viewer.Applying a traditional technique acquired from European print-makers from earlier centuries, Khalil’s etchings on black represent with vividness all his pictorial periods, from the early student days investigating modern art through his numerous travels, the experiments with abstract figures, and ultimately renditions of tributes to modern music and classical painting. Withdrawing from the visual field, the artist is opening the possibility of entering the world with an altogether different morphology, causing apparently unrelated elements to collide into each other and emerge as distinct syntactic compositions. A precise amalgamation between folkloric elements and handicraft, and the timeless quality of art history, give birth to composite worlds with life of their own.The last day of the exhibition is Sunday June 15th.

Katharine Hepburn reportedly once said, “What you see before you, my friend, is the result of a lifetime of chocolate.” And if chocolate worked for Katharine Hepburn, it could also work for you. Now that we’ve resolved the conundrum of what to wear to weddings, it’s time to figure out what to snack on. The best route, we think, is to bring your own fresh take on Laila Al-Mukhtar and Sama Basil Hassan’s Absolute Chocolate. The variety of chocolate offered there contributes a great deal to a satisfying overall experience. “All our chocolates are handmade by the Absolute Chocolate team within our own kitchen. Our ingredients come from all around the world, and our chocolates from Belgium and France,” says co-owner Laila Al-Mukhtar “and the most ordered ones for weddings are the Milk Salted Caramel and Cookie Dough Truffle.” From Salted Caramel to Cookie Dough to Dark Chocolate Turtles, chocolate comes in many iterations, each as delicious as the last and this sweet confection speaks many languages. Of course, we had to ask, what’s the secret to a good chocolate dessert? According to Laila, “the best chocolate requires great chocolate, distinguished complimentary ingredients, and knowing how to mix them together. No matter what you make, it has to be the quality of the chocolate.” What would be trending now for Absolute Chocolate

is the Salted Pumpkin Caramel bars and it is exquisite. The textured and layers give an aftertaste of bittersweet savor that is above and beyond all your expectations. The chocolates and desserts can be designed in shapes, colours and decorations that fit your themes and celebrations. Everything from their pops, chocolates, brownies and baskets are made to satisfy your aspirations, and is tailored just for you. The most noticeable feature of “Absolute Chocolate” is the aroma of melted cocoa that lingers throughout the rooms. Some of the desserts include Milk Chocolate ganache Cake, Salted Pumpkin Caramel Bars, Dark & Milk Chocolate Turtles, Cookie Dough Truffles, Dark Hazelnut Clusters, Paleo cinnamon rolls, Caramel Pecan Fudge Brownies, and the Kinder Cookie Cake. For us, our favorite has to be the Milk Date & Speculoos, for the whole experience is sweetly childish.

A refined chocoholic with a childhood dream and a profound passion for chocolate, Laila Al-Mukhtar launched Absolute Chocolate in September 2013. “It has always been a lifelong passion to bake chocolates and I remember I used to always make Nutella Truffles when I was younger and I always learnt to bring my own dessert to gatherings, just in case what was available was not satisfying.” What Absolute Chocolate aims to do is for their customers to be able to customize and create their own preferable chocolate desserts. So whether you’re planning for an event, looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, or following Katherine Hepburn’s lifestyle choice, Absolute Chocolate is the right place for you. The result is part art installation, part performance, and part Willy Wonka fantasy made real.

LEO(July 23-Aug 22)

GEMINI(May 22-June 21)

The focus is now so firmly on your spiritual side, it is inevitable that you will find yourself connecting to your past or to the more psychological side of your nature during the course of this month. Unfortunately, someone you thought was sincere and genuine may be revealed to be anything but a fake for this period. Upsets can spring from no-where, and your mood can be up and down for this month. But do not lose your cool; there are other brighter things worth looking in life.

You may not see yourself as a pugnacious person, but you may find yourself being more to the point, even blunt in the next one month period. This can be a good thing, because it can give you the power potential to get things done. Yet there may be moments when you may have to resist being uncharacteristically ruthless. Push too hard, something can break. Hence give some breathing space for those around you and take some time off from the rigors of life for this month, Virgo.

LIBrA(Sept. 24-Oct. 23)

The desire to have an influence on your immediate surroundings can be huge in this month, Capricorn. You want to get things done. Theorizing is unlikely to please you and you could be quite defensive - even grumpy if someone close tries to block you. But you need to be patient, because the present planetary positions may not help you to express yourself as usual.

If you feel that people have been telling you what they think you want to hear, rather than what they think, your exasperation can ramp up in this month. How you respond, is down to you, but the chances are you will react in a feistier way than they expect. If you’re dealing with office politics or tricky rivals, this can be a good thing. But a partner might feel the brunt. Hence remain a little elusive in this matter as it might burn bridges.

(Aug. 23-Sept. 23)

The planetary positions for this month will give you an extraordinary appetite for hard work and applying yourself over the next one month period. If that get-fit campaign has stalled, this can soon get you back on track. It is also possible not a lot will come your way, over this time. Try to avoid creepy places and tasks at hand at least for this month time.

You are a natural born communicator, so why is it, that sometimes you are so reluctant to do precisely that in your life, Aquarius. Well, part of it is your penchant for independence. This means, that despite your natural friendliness, there are times when you prefer to be alone. Now in this month however, you can find yourself connecting with people for fun.

What you put in motion now can come into being as the month moves on. But that does not mean you should not see this as an important time, for everything has to have a beginning, and a gestation before it comes a reality. Do think like this because short term pressures can fade. You would be able to get in touch with old friends from far off places for this month.

If balancing the books is becoming more and more tedious you can get a real burst of determination from this month to better your lot. This extra planetary power is going to be on-going for the next four weeks. A big transformation is possible in your life for this time period. Be physically and mentally active and do not idle your time day-dreaming Pisces

We live in serious times, but it is important, wherever possible, to reengage with the things that make us happy. You have an amazing chance to do this now, and your drive to get out and have fun and take part, can be clear. Your love life is set to go through a dramatic phase, and if you’re solo, your desire to bring romance into your life, can be incredible. This is a period of fun and freedom in your life. You would be able to feel this more like never ever before.

So much extra energy and verve is being pumped into your situation, why might you find yourself tense, or even procrastinating for this month, Leo. Well, perhaps it is because you are set to do something really momentous, a life changing event in this month. So it is understandable that you are tentative. Soon enough you will reach a defining point. Important personal and professional events are lined up for the month ahead for you, Leo.

Be cautious about uncertainty and misunderstanding in those 30 days. You will be very active with work related issues. Get structured and keep an eye out for information. Keep in mind that good company may enhance your wellness, so avoid disputes.

However much you have been weighing up your hopes, from now you have a wonderful chance to make at least some of them tangible as the month moves on. Strangely, some of these aspirations may be more spiritual, but a huge injection of planetary energy is putting heavy wind in your sails. There would be certain delays and hindrances in your life for this month but you would be able to overcome those with your grit and better communication skills.
