Principal’s Comment Welcome back to Term 2.

We are now into the second week of this term and for all Year 3, 5 and 7 students across Australia this week is a

significant time as they undertake NAPLAN testing.

The national Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment using national tests

in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.

NAPLAN results provide an important measure of how Australian students are performing in literacy and

numeracy, but it must be remembered that NAPLAN test results are just one measure that teachers and school

staff use to make judgements about the performance of students in our school. Teachers also collect a range of

other assessment data throughout the year to assist them in planning appropriately for each child’s needs.

Later this year a NAPLAN report will be issued to parents of children in Years 3, 5, and 7. We will keep parents

updated as to when they can expect reports to be sent home.

Last year a survey was given out to all parents to complete seeking information about how they viewed the school

and how they would like to see it move forward into the future. Thank you to those parents who responded. Your

feedback, together with that of staff and students, has been carefully considered over a period of time.

Overall, the school is seen as a good school with a significant number of successes which should be celebrated and

clearly articulated both within and to the broader community.

The school community suggested ways to build on these successes and to enable them to be maintained. Several

key messages were:

The school community needs to collectively agree on what it wants to achieve in the future and that this needs to

be reflected in an inspirational vision that is apparent in classrooms, and

The school should find ways to effectively use all members of the community (students, staff and parents) in

significant leadership roles in the school.

Moving forward I will be working hard to make both suggestions a reality. Other suggestions can be viewed in the

2012 Edgewater Primary School Annual Report which will soon be published on the school website.

At this stage, the Edgewater Primary School Council members and staff have considered a vision for the future and

taken into account feedback given by parents and students. In coming weeks we will be requesting further input

so that we can move forward with renewed purpose. Stay tuned.
