Tetney and Tetney Lock Village Voice - Winter 2011
Hello Everyone
As you know another year has nearly passed us and Christmas is on its way. I would like
to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Once again we have
another jam packed newsletter with all that important information about what is hap-
pening in Tetney over the next three months.
Due to heavy commitments over the past six months at University, I have decided to
resign as Editor of Tetney Village Voice, I have met a lot of fantastic people and experi-
enced a lot from producing this from scratch and I would personally like to thank every-
one who has contributed to this over the year. I would also like to thank Conoco Phillips
for sponsoring this Newsletter this year, without them we wouldn't have been able to
raise money for the Tetney Community Steering Group.
Many thanks

Gardening Tips– Fall is a great time to experiment with texture and colour in your container gardens. While mums and asters can be spectacular and clas-sic in a fall container garden, there are lots of other choices that will last well beyond the first frost. Here are some ideas.
Think Perennials - While summer is a terrific time to go crazy with flowering annuals, fall is a wonderful season to try hardy perennials in your container gardens. Have fun experi-menting with colour combinations you didn’t use in the summer. Purples and oranges, mixed with bright greens and deep reds can look stunning.
Cool Looking and Cold Loving Annuals - There are also lots of annuals that look great and will last well past the first frost. Some will even look fabulous and sculptural with a coating of snow. Try combining different heights and forms, or go simple and pot a single dramatic plant in a beautiful container.
Get Your Plants Ready - While you can’t buy your plants tiny down coats, there are things you can do to help them survive the winter. In the fall you’ll want to continue watering your container gardens. However, you should stop fertilizing containers with perennials about six to eight weeks before the first frost date is predicted for your area. You don’t want to encourage new growth, which is ten-der and won’t survive cold temperatures, and could even weaken or kill your plant.
Light freeze (between 29°F to 32°F): ten-der plants are killed, other vegetation is not dramatically effected.
Moderate freeze (between 25°F and 28°F): heavy damage to tender and semi-
hardy plants.
Severe Freeze (below 25°F): ... only the hardy survive.
Winter Proof Your Containers - If you want to keep your containers outside for the win-ter, and you want your perennial plants to survive, use plants that are hardy.
Use Containers That Won’t Crack - Make sure that your containers are made of materi-al that will stand up to freezing and thawing. Ceramics, terra cottas and thin plastics may not survive. Instead try containers made of ….
Fiberglass, Metal, Thick plastic, Stone, Concrete, Hollow logs
Bring Delicate Containers Inside – If you have a delicate container with perennials, dig the plants out and put them into a garden bed before the soil freezes. Or, depending on the plant, you can turn it into a houseplant, or store it in a garage or shed. Just make sure not to let them completely dry out.

The Tetney Community Plan Group would like to say a “BIG THANK YOU” to Dominic Robinson for all his hard work in the editorial position of producing the Village Voice. Without his dedication, the Village Voice would not have been produced. As Dominic is now at University, he unfortunately doesn’t have the time to write and edit the magazine. Mrs Carole McMillan has kind-ly offered to take over from Dominic. If anyone would like to advertise in the Village Voice, you can now contact Carole on 01472 812336 or email
I know everyone will agree with me when I say “The Christmas Light switch-on” was a huge success! There was certainly a ‘Christmassy village’ atmos-phere in the air and we hope that everyone had a lovely evening. It was so nice to see so many people attend. A special thanks to the Parish Council and everyone who helped make the evening a success!
The Village Hall Management Committee has kindly offered village organi-zations free use of the Village Hall for one Saturday a month for 3 months. It is hoped to hold a coffee morning with various stalls from organizations in the village who want to raise money for their own organization. It is hoped to hold the first event on Saturday 25th February 2012 from 10-12. So let’s encourage a village community, enhance the village social life and bring many age groups together! Look forward to seeing you on
25th February 2012 If you would like a stall or for more enquiries contact
Sandra on 01472 811710 or Carole on 01472 812336.
We are also holding a free prize draw, email the word ‘Christmas’ to [email protected] by 14th December 2011, you must live in Tetney and only 1 email per household, by doing this you will be emailed the dates of the new events being held by us.

It’s been a while since I wrote to tell you about the work Anglian Water is planning to carry out at Tetney Blow Wells. Now, with work about to start, I wanted to update you on pro-gress.
As you may remember, the site is nationally important for its wildlife and has been designat-ed a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
As the site’s owner, Anglian Water has a duty to keep them in good condition and to care for the species that have earned it such a special status.
Those species, the water violets growing in the blow wells themselves and the rare wetland plants in the marshy ground around them, are under threat. Willow scrub has been en-croaching on the pools, overshadowing them and drying the site out.
To restore the site we will need to remove many of those trees. While no-one likes the idea of fewer trees, the loss of the blow wells and the wildlife they support would be far more grievous.
Not all the trees are coming out of course and particular care will be taken to keep those which could be considered focal points in the landscape. Nor will the work leave behind straight, unnatural looking tree line. Soft edges should help to reduce the visual impact of the work.
You may also remember that our surveys had found several types of bat on the site.
As a result, we have changed our original plans and will be working in areas away from those used by the bats.
Temporary toilets and other facilities for the workers will be installed on Monday 21st with work due to start on the following Monday, No-vember 28th.
The work compound will be on the far side of the site from the village and by using farmland for access we should be able to keep disturbance and traffic flow through Tetney to a bare mini-mum.
Maps showing the areas affected will be put up at the entrance to the site and while we will have to fence some areas off for a time to keep work-ers and public safe, we will do all we can to keep as much of the site open as possible.
I hope this update has been helpful. Please rest assured that everything we are doing at Tetney is being done with the best interests of the Blow Wells, their wildlife and the local community at heart.

ConocoPhillips Tetney Oil
Terminal Community
Reminder of Alarms and
Procedures
ConocoPhillips (Humber) would like to re-mind you of the alarms and procedures at the Tetney Oil Terminal.
In the event of a major tank fire at the Ter-minal, the general site alarm will be sound-ed. This alarm is a constant note siren. However, it must be emphasised that this siren is also sounded for all emergencies including ALL fires, however small. You may be reassured that apart from for testing the general site alarm has only been sounded twice in the last ten years, both for minor fires in temporary huts.
If you are outside or working near the Ter-minal and black smoke and flames are ap-parent then do not approach. You should instead move away from the installation or alternatively go indoors. If any of the smoke gets onto your skin wash it thoroughly with soap and water. If any gets into your eyes wash them out with plenty of water.
If you go indoors, the following action is advised:
1. Close all windows and doors
2. Go into a ground floor room fur-
thest away from the incident, as this is the least likely to be damaged. Close curtains and blinds, this will increase protection against heat. This is espe-cially important if you are unable to go to a room facing away from the inci-dent
3. If you have a radio tune to Radio
Humberside (medium wave 202 m, 1485 kHz; VHF 95.9 MHz FM) or Viking Radio (medium wave 258 m, 1161 kHz;
96.9 MHz FM) or Lincs FM (VHF 102.2 MHz FM) or Radio Lincolnshire (medium wave 219m, 1368 kHz; VHF 04.9 MHz FM)
4. As the precise nature of an emergency
cannot be predicted, await instructions via radio broadcast or from the emergency services. These officers will be imple-menting the off-site emergency plan; please co-operate with them
Please do not telephone the police or emergency services for advice. It is im-portant to keep lines clear unless you have your own separate emergency. For updates during an incident please call the Cono-coPhillips Hotline (recorded information message) on 0800 387330. Please note: The siren is tested at 9am every Thursday and is sounded for a period of 30 to 40 seconds.
If you have a concern or question regarding operations at the Terminal please do con-tact us at: ConocoPhillips Limited, Tetney Oil Terminal, Tetney Lock Road, Tetney, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, DN36 5NX or call 01469 571571.
Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Louth Canal Wind Energy
Proposal – Consultation Continues
Partnerships for Renewables (PfR) is proposing a wind energy development
on and around Environment Agency-owned land at Louth Canal.
They believe the land is suitable for three turbines which could generate
around 15 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green electricity every year - enough to
power the equivalent of 3,200 homes*.
There is a community benefit fund associated with this project, which with the
new three turbine layout would equal £17,250 per year for the life of the pro-
ject, if it is built. This fund will be managed by local people and spent as the
community sees fit.
A full planning application is likely to be submitted to East Lindsey District
Council in early 2012.
For more information visit www.pfr.co.uk/louthcanal, call: 0800 731 7395 or email: [email protected] * Please note: The environmental benefit figures are based on: three, 2.3 megawatt turbines
with a total installed capacity of 5MW, operating with a 25% capacity factor; average house-
hold electricity use of 4,602kWh per annum; and the electricity generated displacing electricity
generated from CCGT / average fuel mix - approximately 430gCO2/kWh’

join their governing body and help push the school’s performance to new heights.
School governors give up around 6-8 hours a month to assist with the strategic manage-
ment of schools, helping make important decisions on issues such as budgets, curricu-
lum, building management and staff recruitment. They act as a ‘critical friend’ to the
Head, offering advice and support while holding them accountable. Becoming a school governor is a great opportunity to develop new skills, meet new peo-
ple and gain a fascinating insight into the education system. Although it is not necessary
to have certain qualifications or experience, governing bodies will draw on each volun-
teer’s existing expertise and offer access to comprehensive training.
If you have an interest in supporting education in your local community, Tetney Primary
School would love to hear from you. Contact Hannah Bambridge on 020 7288 9539 or
[email protected]. More information can be found at
