Dear Parents/Caregivers

We draw nearly to the end of Term One; we reflect on what an incredible journey we

have been through together. We have seen so many changes as well as the loss of

many events like the Easter Bonnet parade that is for enjoyment or our ANZAC service

to remember those who risked their lives to ensure that we are the country we are

today. We also wonder what the future will hold and how will education look moving

forward for the next three to six months.

As adults, we are feeling anxious about what the future holds, our children are more than likely scared as well. We

don’t know when, where, or how it will end, which is scary. The children are hearing and seeing everything that we

are, feeling our tension and anxiety, and are just as concerned as us, possibly more so. They will need lots of love,

security and reassurance from you, and this time at home can be an opportunity for you to provide it, and make the

most of some quality time together.

Approaching Parents

‘Kids are Kids’, and they get into mischief at times and lose their tempers. We deal with these incidences at school

and parents are notified as per our Behaviour Management Policy. We would appreciate it if the parents don’t

approach each other about the situation. In some incidences, you are friends just discussing your child’s behaviour.

Unfortunately, this can be confronting for parents, when the issue has already been dealt with at school, and an

angry or confrontational parent approaches them. Children do some silly things at times, and they learn from the

consequences. We appreciate your understanding with this matter.

Distance Education

We are going to be utilising Connect as our platform for Distance Education. Parents who have not accessed it before

will receive an opt-out email on Thursday. Parents who have received their report through Connect previously will

be able to access using your ‘P’ number and password. You will be able to sign in on the connect.det.wa.edu, locate

your child/children’s classroom numbers. This will provide you with access to see the work that has been assigned

by teachers. Senior students have their log in details and password to access their work, which enables them to

submit work as well. Currently on Connect is some catch-up work that can be done next week and over the holidays.

This is to provide you with an opportunity to get to know the platform.

Next term, the presentation of the work will be slightly different with a weekly overview being uploaded on a Friday,

except for the first week, then each lesson will have a cover sheet explaining the lesson intentions, lesson outline

and activity. The teachers have been working with such passion and enthusiasm to be prepared for next term to

ensure that your children are still accessing quality education.

SINGLETON PRIMARY SCHOOL

There will be lots of information on Connect, and in the weekly planner, it will be easy to feel overwhelmed. We are

ensuring that we have enough for children who complete work quickly. The minimum expectation would be at least

3 hours, which means an hour each on English and Maths each day, then alternate with the other learning areas for

an hour each day. Remember, this is a learning curve for all of us, and we don’t want you feeling pressured, especially

when you have a couple of children.

Harmony Day

This year I got to experience Harmony Day in a way that I had never experienced it before. Arriving at school in the

morning surrounded by all the fantastic colours of the flags put an extra spring in my step. This year we had to do

the assembly twice to ensure that we minimised the number of people at each one. Both of the assemblies went

well, and the senior students conducted themselves in a very mature way.

Looking forward to seeing you all when you return to school after this settles, hopefully at some stage in Term Two.

A school is not the same without those little smiling faces being around each day. Wishing you all the best during

the holidays, they will undoubtedly be different from those of the past. If you have any issues, please feel free to

P&C Update COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has certain thrown us all some curveballs in recent

times. On behalf of the P&C I would like to provide a short update regarding our

activities:

The uniform shop is currently closed and will reopen again once school returns.

The Colour Run will be postponed. We will look at holding the event towards the end of the year.

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to hold our annual Mother’s Day stall, but we will be back bigger and better next year.

Fundraising this year will be tricky, so we are looking at alternative ways of raising money for our school.

It is important we all continue to work together to support our school and our great community.

The school was shining in all shades of orange for our Harmony Day Celebration. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Our school has 65 flags representing countires from all over the world. I’m Australian Too, a beautiful book written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Ronojoy Gosh was read at the Harmony day assembly. Thank you to all those who made the celebrations so wonderful. CBCA Book of the Year Awards:

The Children’s Book Council of Australia announced the notable books

for 2020 in February. To take a look at these head to:

Hello from a very quiet library...

Q. Why are school librarians always so lonely?

A. Because they are always by them shelves.

While your children are at home, if anything, please encourage them

to read. This might be silent reading, reading out loud, and/or shared

reading. Not only will it help them with their literacy skills, but your

child will benefit from the ‘escape’ that reading can provide.

If you are stuck for time to read with your child, ask them to read a

short story to you while you are cooking dinner, or perhaps your

children can take turns reading with their siblings.

Australian author Mem Fox has some great tips for reading aloud with

aloud-commandments/. Her final tip is “please read aloud every day

because you just adore being with your child, not because it’s the right

thing to do”.

The hilarious David Walliams is releasing an audio story every day

Try to take up reading yourself if you haven’t already, even if it is a

magazine, or reading picture books to your children.

If your children become bored, suggest that they:

Begin a journal about what they have been doing at home.

Write a review on some of the books they have read.

Write a story. Tell them how much their teachers and Miss Pitchford would LOVE to read a

story written by them when we all return to school.

Make illustrations for a book.

Write letters to friends or family that they are unable to see right now, or to their future self.

Some classes have Pen Pals around Australia – suggest they write a letter to their Pen Pal to

send later when we return to school.

We are all probably a little overwhelmed by the adjustments to so many changes in our lives right
