What is your greatest highlight for 2014/15? A highlight for the school year would be our first full year of using LabLearner. Seeing the Lab in action and watching the
students learn science by doing science was truly exciting. My second highlight would have to be the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Who wouldn’t like the opportunity to pour ice water on their teachers?! Mr. Randy made the moment especially memorable for me when he so kindly gave me a towel filled with shaving cream after I was doused with buckets of ice water! I think all the students and faculty really enjoyed that moment. It was an honor to be able to stand up for our Faith by sending our contribution to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute. What are you looking forward to in 2015/16? In the new school year, I am looking forward to having WiFi school wide that will allow for more effective integration of technology. What are you summer plans? I hope to get in as much golf as I can, small vacation to the beach and swimming with my girls. In addition, I’ll be at the school working with Ms. Allen on key strategies for integrating technology with the WiFi. Special thanks? There are so many people to thank for another excellent school year. Thank you to our wonderful teachers and staff who put so much time and effort into teaching and working with our students every day. Thank you to the PTO and School Board for all the work they have done for STS throughout the school year. Thank you to our students for working so hard and giving your best effort to continue to grow spiritually and academically. Thank you to the parents for entrusting your children to STS and providing much continued support for your children, their teachers, the school, and this administration. Have a great summer! Please remember to keep reading, do some math, go to Mass weekly and pray daily. Sincerely,
Mr. Shore

After CASEF there is a little time for the students to catch their breaths before they begin to
start preparing for the state PJAS competition. The
state competition has students from all over
Pennsylvania. The people, who one meets and
befriends during science fair, make science even
more fun and is one of the many benefits of
participating in science fair. After the PJAS State
Competition science fair officially comes to an end
for the middle school students who moved on. Each
student that participated this year agrees that science
fair is a lot of hard work, but that there are more
benefits than drawbacks. It is summed up by
Meredith Kelly, an eighth grade student, “PJAS is a
fabulous experience and is definitely worth it”.
Moving on at science fair takes time,
dedication, and perseverance. Both the PJAS and
CASEF judging can be a little scary, but preparation
is the key. Mrs. Banks, the middle school science
teacher, reinforces that and is always there to guide,
encourage and help students prepare. The judges are
adults who are science minded and often work in the
field of your project; they question you, offer advice,
often referred to as constructive criticism, but also
encourage you to continue to do your best. I have
learned to take pride in all my work, no matter what
happens, or what score I get. I moved on both last
year, and this year and there were many times I felt
that science fair was too stressful and I wanted to
quit, but then I remember all the good things about
science and the science fair. In the end, standing up
on stage with other students who have the same
passion for science and hearing your name being
announced is a special feeling that makes it all worth
it; and any student who is determined and willing to
put forth the time and effort will surely be able to
experience that too.
Moving on at Science Fair
By: Maggie Killmeyer, 8th grade
September through December is known to
seventh and eighth grade students as science fair
time. Many people believe that St. Theresa
School’s involvement with science fair ends in
December with the school science fair, but that is
not true. Each year several students are selected to
move onto the Capital Area Science and Engineer-
ing Fair (CASEF) and The Pennsylvania Junior
Academy of Science (PJAS). The Grand
Champion and Runner-Up from seventh and
eighth grade, along with six to eight other students
with projects that display excellent work are able
to participate in one or both of the fairs. As this
year’s 8th grade runner up I went to both fairs.
We, the students, begin preparing from the
moment the St. Theresa’s science fair ends. The
PJAS Regional competition comes in February. At
PJAS students use a PowerPoint presentation; they
create, to give an oral explanation of their project
to the judges. It is okay to be nervous, but as Mia
Kilroy, one of this year’s eighth grade
participants, explains “It [PJAS] gives us, as
students, good exposure to science as well as
helping with social skills.” Those who receive a
first place award, seven this year from St Theresa,
move on to the PJAS State Competition which is
at Penn State University in May, but before that is
CASEF.
In March, the students that were selected
move on to CASEF. At this competition the
boards, papers, and project journals used at the
school’s science fair are on display again. The
judges review the projects and then interview the
students asking questions about their work.
Approximately 45 schools, from five counties
around central Pennsylvania, the capitol area, are
represented. Winning at CASEF can be especially
exciting because there are many different
categories of awards and many different types of
awards that are given by the fair’s sponsors. A
participant can get medals, plaques, gift cards and
even money. Representing St. Theresa School at
CASEF this year were: Stephanie Uroda, Leah
Deppen, Mia Kilroy, me (Maggie Killmeyer)
Elise Shore, Jocey Francis, Matthew
Musselman, and Amanda Smith; everyone did
an amazing job and many awards were won.

Farewell to St. Theresa School
By: Patrick Levin, Student Council
President
During my eight years at Saint Theresa
School I have had many great experiences. Every
year something was different at school and there
were new changes.
Whether it was what
we learned, the
teachers, or new
friends, the changes
were good and made a
difference. All of the
grades have been
different but none have
been as special or
unique as eighth grade.
Eighth grade has been an amazing
experience that I will never forget. Many great
things have happened this year including a better
sense of friendship between my classmates. We all
came together and enjoyed the year as a whole. I
have made many friends throughout my time at
STS. Some of them will go on to different high
schools but I will see most of them again in high
school.
I will miss the good times I have had at STS
but I will still have the memories. My eighth grade
classmates have played an important role in my life
and I am sure my classmates feel the same way.
With all of this said, I would like to say a final
farewell to all of my eighth grade classmates. I
hope that all of us remember the good times at STS
and keep close with the friends we have made.
It is with great sadness
that we say good-bye to a
wonderful teacher at St.
Theresa School. Mrs.
Angela Tarkington is
going to be pursuing a
degree in teaching higher
education.
Mrs. Tarkington in a
letter to the Middle
School Parents: “This
decision has not come
easy as I have grown to love the closeness of the
Saint Theresa’s School community. The support
of my fellow teachers, the administration, staff
and the students and families of STS has been
wonderful. I have enjoyed getting to know and
love the students I’ve had the pleasure of teaching
over the past two years. Being a middle school
teacher and mentor to our children has been a
truly rewarding experience and one that I will
never forget. STS will always hold a special
place in my heart. Please keep me in your prayers
as I set out on this new journey.”
We all wish you the very best Mrs. Tarkington
and thank you for two wonderful years of
excellent teaching in mathematics!!
Because of Mrs. Tarkington ……
WE LOVE MATH!!

What a beautiful day we had for our annual Race for
Education! It was so nice the students were able to
be outside to enjoy the warm, sunny weather. Thank
you to all our parent volunteers to helped out with
the Race this year.
There is always so
m u c h t o b e
accomplished. Thank
you to our School
Board Members, Jenn
Nunemaker, Erin
Verano and Dana
Needham along with
Ann Levin and so
many other gracious
volunteers who worked
so diligently to make
t h e d a y r u n
smoothly. A job well
done by all including
our students and their great running. Kudos to some
long distance runners. We clocked three students
and here is how far they ran during their race for
education time:
Dylan Renne 4th grade ran 2.65 miles in 27 minutes
Chase Nunemaker 3rd grade ran 3.1 in 29 minutes
Joey Francis 8th grade 2.9 miles in 30 minutes
This year, proceeds
from the Race will be
used for: new teacher
i-pads, mirroring app
to project i-pad image
onto Smart Boards,
Smart Board for
LabLearner classroom
and multiple web-
based programs to
enhance s tudent
learning. Thank you
for your support!
Four 8th grade student council officers traveled to the
Harrisburg State Capital to attend the annual EITC rally
on May 6, 2015. The students had an opportunity to take
part in supporting a program run by the state of
Pennsylvania that helps so many families be able to
afford tuition at private schools. EITC stands for
the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program.
The program is run by the state of Pennsylvania,
Department of Community and Economic Development
(DCED). The students had the opportunity to take a
picture with former NFL player Ricky Watters, who was
a guest speaker at the event. Pictured is: Ellen Frantz,
Erica Lawrence, Ricky Watters, Patrick Levin and Leah
Deppen.
BUSINESS OWNERS: How often have you had the
opportunity to choose how your state tax dollars are
spent? Not only does this improve a student’s chance to
receive the education of their choice, but also it results in
a tax credit for your business and the money stays right in
our community. As a business in Pennsylvania, you want
to ensure that we have the best education in our
community. Having the option to pay Pennsylvania tax
or divert that tax money to Saint Theresa School to help
families struggling to afford a private education is an
incredible gift.
Do you own a business? You may quality! Please thank
these businesses who have signed up to help our school:
Select Specialty Hospital
Treichler Sports & Family Chiropractic
Nutrition Group
Metro Bank Soccer Shots
Reilly Insurance Parthemore Funeral Home

Math24 or the
24Game is a
math game
designed to
work on
students’
processing and
fluency skills
for adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying
numbers to equal 24 in a fun, competitive way. On
Monday, May 4th, 2015, The CAIU (Capital Area
Intermediate Unit) held a competition for up to 32
competing school teams made up of 4th and 5th
Grade students. St. Theresa was well represented
with (going left to right in picture) Damiana
Harkins, Isabel Shore, Payten Gorman and
Grace Verano! Way to go girls!!
Respect Life Club The Respect Life Club under
the direction of Mrs. Lyn
Kaufold has been busy again
this year! The students
recently had a baby shower
and gave hundreds of baby
items to the Morningstar
Pregnancy Services in New
Cumberland. The
students also had
their annual
Quarters for Kids
event. The event
raised $1,000 for
Father Raja’s
orphanage in India.
Way to go!!!
An art enrichment club by Mrs. Amanda Forst
was offered to students who seek to develop their
passion for and to create art outside of their normal
class times. The enrichment program provided
extra time for students to create and learn about
art. Students greatly enjoyed the extra time to be
creative! Session themes include the following:
sketchbook drawing, paper making,
painting, book binding, holiday crafts,
clay, and print making. Kudos to the
Art Enrichment Program for creating
“Phil-LEAP” the Frog who proudly
served as our mascot this school year!
Marian Club St. Theresa School students of all
ages are welcome to join
the Marian Club. The Club is under
the direction of Mrs. Terry
Pinamonti and Mrs. Sue Moser.
The purpose of the club is to help
lead students closer to Jesus through
deeper devotion to Mary. Club
meetings were held from 3:30 - 4:30 pm on the first
Wednesday of each month. Members of the club
pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of
the Rosary and create pictures
for the sick and homebound. On
the last club meeting, students
participated in crowing Mary
with flowers and celebrated the
end of the year with an ice cream
treat.

News:
Winning a
third
straight
state title
was not
enough
for Bradley
Buchter (STS ‘12). Even setting a state record was
not the ultimate goal for the junior. Buchter was
aiming for the pool record in diving for the PIAA
Class AA boys competition at Kinney Natatorium
at Bucknell University, and got it with a 642.50.
With his third straight gold medal already well in
hand when he entered the last three dives, Buchter
reset his own state meet record with one dive to go.
He scored a 67.60
on a forward 1.5
somersault with two
twists to bring his
total to 570. His pre-
vious state record
was a 557.30 from
last year.
