The Year 12 Final Assembly was very entertaining, enlightening and most importantly, done in good taste and humour. The students set a wonderful example to our younger students and have certainly set a benchmark in relation to how the last days of Year 12 should be celebrated. Congratulations to the class of 2009. The Year 12 Graduation and Mass will be held on Friday 20 th November. Mass will commence at 6.00pm at St Patrick’s Church, Camperdown, followed by the Graduation Dinner commencing at 7.45pm at the Noorat Community Centre. Only students who are currently enrolled in Year 12 at Mercy Regional College will be in attendance. As part of the catering arrangements for this dinner the College does require a number of parents from Year 11 to assist with the serving of meals. If you are able to assist please let Ms Lyn Davies know of your availability. The family mass will be celebrated by Fathers Eugene McKinnon and Neville Stanislaus. Year 12 students are asked be at the Church by 5.30pm so that students can be organized. It is important that we gather as a community to celebrate the Eucharist to mark the conclusion of 13 years of Catholic education. Our Year 12 students have been fine ambassadors for our College over the past six years and I feel confident in saying that they will make a great contribution to our society. On behalf of the Mercy community, I would like to thank these students for their valued contribution to our College and wish them all the very best, not only for their exams, but for the life that lies beyond Mercy Regional College. Year 12 Students Another year has finished for Year 12 classes. In farewelling our Year 12 students last week, at our whole school assembly, I reflected on the stark reality that these young women and men are now ready to embark on the next phase of their life journey, a journey that will forever change. Gone from their lives are the incessant bells, the rush to the canteen at recess and the role as leaders of Mercy Regional College. We wish our students well as they prepare for their examinations and hope that their efforts are suitably rewarded. To our Year 12 students of 2009, remember that you are and always will be, a part of the tradition that is Mercy Regional College. Good luck! Junior School Oratory Competition On Friday, I had the privilege of attending the Junior School Oratory competition held at the O’Keeffe Campus. During the term students from each of the English classes have been involved in public speaking and Friday marked the culmination of this work with one student representing each homeroom. The topics the students chose from were: Are there angels among us? Technology is making us socially inept. “Always laugh when you can, it’s cheap medicine” – Lord Byron. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Our Vision Mercy Regional College serves a wide rural community which values growth and diversity in Catholic Education in

the Mercy tradition.

Our Mission In the Spirit of the Gospels we commit ourselves to the core values of community, inclusiveness, learning, care,

justice and mercy, excellence and achievement.

Our Focus for 2009 Learning: Through the Mercy tradition we encourage our community to seek knowledge,

to nurture curiosity and to love learning. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our graduating class of 2009 for the way in which they concluded their time at Mercy. Our students ensured that all members of the College were respected, demonstrated appreciation for their teachers and showed a maturity which will ensure that the class of 2009 will be remembered for all the right reasons. The Year 12 Final Assembly was very entertaining, enlightening and most importantly, done in good taste and humour. The students set a wonderful example to our younger students and have certainly set a benchmark in relation to how the last days of Year 12 should be celebrated. Congratulations to the class of 2009. The Year 12 Graduation and Mass will be held on Friday 20thNovember. Mass will commence at 6.00pm at St Patrick’s Church, Camperdown, followed by the Graduation Dinner commencing at 7.45pm at the Noorat Community Centre. Only students who are currently enrolled in Year 12 at Mercy Regional College will be in attendance. As part of the catering arrangements for this dinner the College does require

a number of parents from Year 11 to assist with the serving of meals. If you are able to assist please let Ms Lyn Davies know of your availability. The family mass will be celebrated by Fathers Eugene McKinnon and Neville Stanislaus. Year 12 students are asked be at the Church by 5.30pm so that students can be organized.

Junior School Oratory Competition On Friday, I had the privilege of attending the Junior School Oratory competition held at the O’Keeffe Campus. During the term students from each of the English classes have been involved in public speaking and Friday marked the culmination of this work with one student representing each homeroom. Other Student Achievements The following students are congratulated on their achievements. Nicola Sharp for coming 3rd in the recent Australasian Bagpipe Championships as “Young Piper of the Year”. Great effort!! Montanna Howard was a member of the Camperdown Junior Hockey grand final team “Gold” which was presented with the Corangamite Sportsmen Club Team Award. Matthew Conroy for winning 3rd place in Kata and 2nd place in Kumite at the State final of the National All Styles Karate Championships. SMS Messaging As part of our review in light of this year’s emergency situations (bushfires and swine flu) the College has now acquired SMS messaging technology to enable us to contact all families via a text message to mobile phones. At the moment, there is every indication that once again we will be faced with cancellation of bus services and possibly school closures on high fire danger days. This technology will allow us to send text messages to families advising of the school’s response to an emergency situation. To ensure that all families can be contacted we will need to have a current mobile phone number. Where this information has not been provided, the office staff will make contact in the coming weeks to obtain a mobile number. Once all numbers have been recorded the College may also undertake some testing of this technology. We will advise families before such tests are conducted. School Uniform & Hats A reminder to all parents that the summer uniform is to be worn during term 4 and that part of the summer uniform is the requirement that all students must wear the approved College hat, when in the sun. The College hat is available from our uniform shop. Second Hand Uniform & Book Sale Day Once again, the PTFA will be holding a second-hand uniform and book sale prior to the end of the year. If you have any uniform items or texts books that you would like to be sold please mark your name and desired price clearly on each item and forward them to the office at either McAuley or O’Keeffe Campus. They will need to be handed in by Monday 30th November. Please note the sale will take place only at the – McAuley Campus Camperdown from 1.00pm to 3.00pm on Wednesday 2nd December. Car Raffle Monday, 31st August, marked the beginning of the 35th year of the Mercy Regional College Car Raffle. The car raffle is certainly now the most important fund raising effort of our PTFA. Raffle books and rosters for selling tickets have been distributed.

This year’s prizes are as follows: 1st Prize:

This year, we have again selected a more fuel-efficient car to ensure that the running costs for the eventual winner, will be more economical. The College is indeed grateful to our abovementioned suppliers for their generosity of raffle prizes. Where possible, it would certainly be appreciated if our school community could support these businesses.

I would remind ALL families that only 2½ weeks remain for selling tickets before the night of the draw. This will take place at our “Arts Night” on Wednesday 18th November at approximately 8:00pm. So please try to sell as many tickets as possible between now and then. A copy of the roster for the remainder of the selling days is on pages 9 &10 of this newsletter.

Finishing Dates for Year 7 – 11 Students I would also like to take this opportunity to remind both students and parents and that attendance, up to and including the last day of school, for the year is required by all students at all year levels. The last days for the various year levels are listed below: Year 11: Friday 26th November Year 7 - 10: Friday 4th December Term 1 dates for the start of the school year in 2010 The commencement date for students at Mercy Regional College, in 2010, will be Monday 1st February. Teachers will return to school on Wednesday, 27th January, 2010. Along the Track I have attached to this newsletter, for your interest, on page 11, a reflection titled “Silence” written by Jim Quilinan from the Diocesan Catholic Education Office in Warragul. I hope you enjoy this reading. End of Year Mass of Thanksgiving This year, our End of Year Mass of Thanksgiving will be held on Tuesday 8thDecember at St Thomas’ Church, Terang at 7.00pm followed by supper. The evening time will allow families to celebrate the Eucharist together. It is the expectation of the College that all students in Year 7 – 11 would be in attendance. Following Mass there will be the presentations of awards and prizes. Supper will follow in the St Thomas’ Community Centre. We ask that parents of our Year 8 students help the St Thomas’ community, with catering, by being prepared to bring along a plate of supper to share. Prayer

Loving God be with me now,

as I prepare for my exams. Thank you for the many talents and gifts you have

given me and for the opportunity of education. Calm my nerves and anxiety, help me to remember all that I have studied,

to express it clearly and to answer the questions the very best that I can.

Holy Spirit, sit with me in my exam -and always.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Katie Kenna for working well in all subject areas, teachers are very happy with her application to her work. Jump Rope for Heart Report by Darren Cheeseman Last week, students in years 7 and 8 participated in the Jump Rope for Heart which raises funds for the Heart Foundation. Students were given forms late in Term 3 and asked to try to raise funds through sponsorship. In return, all students in years 7 and 8 had to complete a “Jump-Off” session where, in their double lesson of Physical Education, they had to complete a variety of skipping skills and tricks. All students participated enthusiastically and through their efforts were able to raise $915.15. These funds will assist with research and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Special congratulations go to Laura Glennen who raised the highest total. Well done to all students involved and thanks to the parents and community for their contributions. In the next newsletter there will be some actions shots of students participating in the “Jump Rope for Heart”.

Front Row to Go Sound System Last week a Front-RowTto-Go-Sound field system was put into use at the O'Keeffe Campus. The cost of this sound system was kindly donated by the members of three clubs. Camperdown Lions Club, Terang Nexus Club and Terang Lions Club. The system consisits of a portable speaker and two forms of microphone, either hand-held or back-of-the-neck microphone. This system is designed to have sound spread evenly around the room and to improve the quality of the learning environment. We are very grateful for the enthusiasm of these clubs and their commitment to the local community. We are sure that this sound unit will assist students in their learning. MRC Junior Oratory Competition 2009 On Friday, October 23rd, the inaugural Junior Oratory Competition was held at the O’Keeffe Campus at Noorat. Finalists from each homeroom competed and the guest adjudicators were Mrs. Lorraine Gleeson – Terang Nexus Club, Mrs. Di Daffy – former Corangamite Councillor and Mr. Jeff Lawes – Terang Lions Club. The judges commented on the difficulty of choosing a winner as all finalists spoke to an excellent standard. Campus co-ordinator, Tony Wynd, hosted the event and students, parents and friends enjoyed the diverse topics presented by the students. Teachers were also delighted with the high standard of speeches. Finalists were: 7A Molly Bourke 7B Rhys Jansen van beek 7C Rachel Hickey 8A Emmelie Nijskens 8B Eliza Whiting 8C Matthew O’Brien Congratulations to Emmelie Nijskens, who was declared the winner after her speech “Are there angels among us?”. WORK EXPERIENCE FOR 2010 The Year Nine students recently received an information pack regarding work experience arrangements for 2010. The dates for work experience for all Year Tens will be the 8th – 12th of February 2010. The school encourages all students to discuss the options with their parents; taking into account how they will be able to access the place of employment during this week. The school encourages students/parents to make the initial contact with the employer to see if they partake in a work experience program. We have also indicated in the pack that some places in Warrnambool may direct the students to a local work experience coordinator at a cost of $70.00. This coordinator is Amanda Lowan who is based at Emmanuel College. Amanda’s contact number is 55620166. If your Year Nine child did not receive this information pack they should obtain a copy from the front office. TAX FILE NUMBERS All students are able to arrange for a Tax File Number to be issued through the school. If your son/daughter requires a tax file number for part time work, or potential part time /fulltime employment then an application form can be obtained at the office. This application form was also included in the current Year Nine work experience pack. Once the Tax File Form is filled in by the student it is authorised by the school and sent away for issuing from the tax office. For ease of processing can all tax file forms be returned to the College office by Friday the 6th of November.
