WELCOME TO OUR STAFF FOR 2014

Thank You Thank you to Heather and Sacha Ferguson, the xmas fairies, who came and decorated the dead tree in the Prep courtyard. They covered it in Christmas baubles and glittery birds to surprise the preps! The children noticed and so did the mums. The teachers thought each other did it! It looks very pretty, It will be grubbed out and a new plant will be added next year.

Fete Cake Stall If anyone has seen a large round green platter with floral design, Moroccan style, it had chocolate brownies on it at the cake stall at the fete the owner is desperate to have it returned. Please contact the school office if you have seen it.

1.30pm Dismissal

Farewell from Mrs Smith! Thank you to the students, families and teachers who made last Wednesday’s assembly one never to forget. It is not often that I am surprised, but my beach themed farewell was an event I will remember forever. I appreciate the efforts our BPS families had gone to keep the surprise under wraps. I felt I had been channelled into a Gidget movie (ask your parents who that is kids!). I will miss Beaumaris Primary very much and will take with me wonderful memories of our students and school community and the fun we have shared. I wish you all a very happy festive

season and hope to catch up with you around the area. With love Jan Smith

My name is Justin Brown and I am excited to be joining the Beaumaris Primary School community as a Grade 5 teacher in 2014. I have recently moved from Perth due to my fiancées work commitments as a Physiotherapist. As a teacher, I have worked in the private school system in Perth at Wesley College and Christ Church Grammar School in various roles. I have had extensive experience teaching in both Primary and Secondary schools, predominantly in the

English and Humanities learning areas. Prior to my teaching career I was a professional basketball player travelling the world playing in Europe, Asia, the USA and Australia (Perth Wildcats and Brisbane Bullets - NBL). Since retiring I have been heavily involved in coaching and look to get involved at Beaumaris Primary School. I look forward to sharing my experience and knowledge with the community both in and out of classroom. As the tallest teacher at Beaumaris and maybe the state of Victoria (7'0"), I'm sure you won't miss me walking around the school! Have a safe and merry Christmas, and I look forward to meeting you in 2014.

My name is Miss Alysha Morecroft and I will be teaching 2M. I am excited and passionate about being involved in the Beaumaris Primary School Community. I completed my studies at Monash University, where I studied a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Primary Teaching. Whilst completing my studies I worked at a local school as an integration aid part time with many students with varying needs. During my studies my teaching experiences extended across a variety of different schools. I was selected to complete my final teaching placement in the Cook Islands which was an amazing learning experience. I have a strong interest in Sport and being a part of team environments. I am thoroughly looking forward to meeting you all and being a part of the fantastic community at

Beaumaris Primary in 2014. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Pip has worked with Year 6 students and Prep students at Beaumaris Primary School this year, and with Year 3 students at Elwood Primary School and Year 2 students at Elsternwick Primary School in 2012, while completing her Master of Teaching at Melbourne University. She was a recipient of the Dean’s Honours Award for being in the top 1-2% of students. In recognition of her academic record, enthusiasm for innovation, and practicum reports, she also received a coveted university scholarship to teach at Katha Lab School in Delhi, India for two weeks in November this year. Before teaching, Pip worked in health and education as a Speech Pathologist, in Australia and the U.K. The flexibility,

creativity, challenges and complexity of 21st century education inspired Pip to pursue her Masters in Teaching. Pip shares Beaumaris Primary School’s constructivist philosophy and values, and is motivated by the school’s high expectations for all learners, sense of community and lively, active spirit of enquiry.

Hello, my name is Mrs Maree O’Dwyer and I am delighted to be teaching class 1OD at Beaumaris Primary School in 2014. Between 2005 and 2008 I undertook my Bachelor of Education at Deakin University in Geelong. My major study was Physical Education and my minor study in Music. I completed teaching placements at schools in both Geelong and Melbourne as well as working in both the Private and Government sectors. While at unive rsity, I worked at The Geelong College as a netball coach for a team of year seven girls. We managed to have a lot of success across the APS network. I, myself was an avid netball player, playing in the Geelong Football & Netball League for a number of years. Unfortunately, I had to hang up my bib due to injury.

I started my teaching career at Canterbury Primary School in 2009 where I taught Grade 5 and completed my Victorian Institute of Teaching registration. In 2010 I moved to Middle Park Primary School where I have taught for the past four years. I taught Prep in 2010 and 2011. Grade 1 in 2012 and this year I teach a multi-aged class of grade 1 & 2s. For a number of years I coordinated the school yearbook, was a member of a number of School-Council committees and I have been a part of the development of the one:one iPad program implemented across the school this year. I am a happy and friendly individual; highly motivated to positively influence and challenge student learning. I provide a stimulating, fun and caring environment in which students can safely grow and develop. I am very approachable and I strongly value teacher - parent communication to ensure an important link between the school and families. I look forward to getting to know you all next year. Have a wonderful break and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My name is Anne Sutton and I have been teaching for eight years in a variety of educational settings and countries. I completed a Bachelor of Education at Charles Sturt University in NSW and started my teaching career in Newcastle and surrounding locations, teaching Grades 3-6. I was then bitten by the travel bug and embarked upon a year’s teaching contract in Japan, working as an English teacher for both adults and children. Following my time in Japan I decided to continue my overseas teaching experience and travelled to London. I taught in a range of schools across London as a casual teacher before accepting a full time position in the Early Years team at Bousfield School in South

Kensington, where I stayed for 1 year. I have spent the last 4 years teaching at Altona P-9 College, as the Prep and Grade 1 teacher. I am an extremely passionate teacher and am very excited about joining the Beaumaris Primary School Community in 2014.

A warm hello to the Beaumaris Primary school community. My name is Caitlyn Falkenbach. I graduated from La Trobe University with a Post-Graduate Diploma of Education, and previously, a Bachelor of Arts with a double major (Psychology/Sociology) from the same University. I am qualified to teach from Prep to Year 12. This year I have had the pleasure of teaching at Willowmavin Primary school. I have been teaching Prep students and implementing the Walker Learning Approach at this school, which I am greatly committed to and look forward to continuing at Beaumaris PS. look forward to becoming a part of the

Beaumaris Primary School community. Caitlyn Falkenbach.

WELL DONE SUMMER Last week on Thursday 12th December Summer was invited by Little Athletics Victoria to run in the "Zatopek 10" at Albert Park in a mixed age medley event. This is an exclusive event which showcases Australia's best runners in a lead up for the Commonwealth Games. The team ran an outstanding race and came 4th on the night. More recently on Saturday 14th December Summer ran in the State Relay Championships at Albert Park where Summer and her team won a Silver Medal in the Medley Relay, a Silver in the Mixed 4 x 100 Relay and a Gold Medal Girls 4 x 100 Relay. This was an outstanding result for Summers first competitive meet in Under 9.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND WELL BEING TEAM From Michael Grose It’s a (Christmas) wrap! How will you close up the school year and set the scene to make next year the best ever? A great article for Christmas reading! Enjoy! MEET THE TEACHER DAY On Tuesday our students had their last ‘Step Up Day’ and met their 2014 teacher. It was wonderful to have our new staff on board for this exciting morning. Our year 5 students met their 2014 prep buddies and presented them with a booklet with information about Beaumaris Primary and some holiday activities. The year 5s look forward to starting the 2014 off as year 6 leaders by helping their buddies settle into school.

SUSTAINABILITY 2013 What a wonderful year we have had in terms of Sustainability. We have been awarded our first star for the Core Module of the AussiVic Resource Smart program by Sustainability Victoria. This was a huge achievement for our school, and we are now working on the Waste and Biodiversity modules. More exciting news is that we WON the Replas Recycling Soft Plastic competition! We have won another recycled plastic park bench seat for our yard, and will also have our soft plastic collected for free during 2014. Well done everyone who contributed! We would like our families to take their soft plastic to Woolworths or Coles, as the collection will only cover our school plastic waste. I want to thank and congratulate all of the year 5 and 6 students who worked very hard this year in our Student Sustainability Team, particularly Dan Lu, Megan Tedstone and Charlie Munn. They all did a wonderful job of managing our recycling each week, as well as the bins in the shadecloth eating area, and most importantly working in our beautiful kitchen garden with Mrs Hebard. Our chickens are happily settled in their new home, and we look forward to starting again next year when we hatch new chicks. Our final sustainability achievement for the year was the installation of a 25,000 water tank yesterday on the north side of our sports shed. Mr Bailey will have it operational soon, which is very exciting. Thank you to our families for your support, and we will endeavour to continue to expand our sustainability journey in 2014. Lindy McManus

Year One From the Year One Teachers We would like to wish all students and families a Merry Christmas and a well deserved summer holidays. We are fortunate to be able to work within such a wonderful community. The smiling faces and eagerness of the students to learn each day is very rewarding. Thank you to our Class Representatives Ness Newell, Fiona Love, Karen Cox, Ilene Lorenz, Lisa Grant and Delvene Beaumont who have offered endless assistance throughout the year to support our teaching and learning programs. And to all of the current Year One Students we wish you all the best in Year 2!

Year Three Christmas fun as a very busy year draws to a close.

On Wednesday the grade 3 students had a fun filled day to finish off the 2013 school year. They rotated around a huge

choice of Christmas craft activities and indulged in a delicious surprise lunch. The well-kept secret was a fish and chips

picnic on the oval. The children and teachers from grade 3 would like to wish all our parents and family members a

happy Christmas and a safe holiday. We look forward to seeing all the students return for grade 4 in 2014 on Thursday

29th January.

Year Six THE LAST ONE! What an amazing last week of term we have had in year 6! Our week started with a bang with our Graduation Evening. The students reflected on the year with great confidence and maturity, entertained the audience with their favourite song from their term 3 performance-I Love the Knight Life and then concluded with a very moving rendition of ‘Lanterns’. Our parents, students and teachers met for a chat over supper after the proceedings. Thank you to our parents for providing our delicious supper. On Tuesday we met our buddies for a picnic lunch. The preps presented the year 6s with an assortment of creative Christmas cards and messages. Yesterday’s Bike Hike to Elwood was a wonderful way to enjoy the Bayside bike path, a tasty BBQ and time to relax with friends. Thank you to our bike riding parents, BBQ girls, Mr Bailey and Mrs Rothberg for coming along and sharing the fun. Thank you to our grade reps-Alison Lister, Vanessa Hawkins, Sally Styles and Billie Pecer for their amazing efforts (in a fete year!!!) as grade reps for year 6. Your efforts are much appreciated. Tomorrow we farewell our Year 6 leaders as they leave on their new journey to secondary school. Our assembly will commence at 9am. We wish our year 6 students all the very best for their future endeavours and thank them for their passion for learning, leadership and friendship they have shared. We look forward to a visit in term one to catch up with their news of their secondary school.
