11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! I’m off to Phoenix this weekend for 9 days and the Unity People’s Convention at the Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa. I’m proud to be part of the Convention team led by Debbie Ball, as well as having the privilege of joining some great musicians like Karen Drucker, Ester Nicholson, Christine Stevens, The JaJa’s,

Zephryn Conte and others to create an unforgettable experience for our ministers and laypeople. We will be introducing our newest songbook, SHINE ON! at the convention as well. Each year the songs get better and better and we keep building on our library of great New Thought music for you to draw from for your work. I’ll run a feature on the songbook in the July Sound Connections. In fact, this month’s free sheet music is from Shine On! - Chris Foster’s inspirational and patriotic song “What America Means To Me”. Thank you Chris! In the meantime, you can purchase Shine On! now through our online store at www.unity.org. Our Sound Connections brochures have been mailed out. Rooms are going fast at Unity Village for this amazing week of music, prayer and peace. This year’s conference falls during the 11 Days Of Global Unity celebration which is also on grounds and includes some amazing speakers and events in addition to the music. (see Chapter 3) This would be a great year to bring that “non-musical” spouse or friend to Sound Connections as there will be events and activities for everyone. This issue includes this year’s 21 songs nominated for a Posi Award and the schedule for my radio show on Unity.FM where you can hear them all. There is a great article by Karen Drucker, and a review of the amazing new CD/Songbook/Textbook from Sue K Riley and Leddy Hammock, “The 12 Women Of The Chalice”. Thanks to brother Richard Carr for organizing the Wings of Song Outreach program to provide books for churches needing them. See details in the “Mailbox” chapter of the newsletter. So far, response to our new format for Sound Connections has been well received. Let me know if you are experiencing any issues with viewing or downloading the PDF document. This is meant to standardize the format for everyone. Some were receiving it in plain text, others with the graphics, now everyone should be seeing the same thing. That’s UNITY! Enough talk, now let’s get CONNECTED!! Always remember: “You are crucial to the growth of the New Thought movement. You can and DO make a difference!” Richard Mekdeci Sacred Music Resources Coordinator Association of Unity Churches International

The Power Of Positive Music Karen Drucker Ok - play a little game with me. You fill in the musical jingle lines: Plop, plop, fizz fizz, _______________ You deserve a break today so get up and get away to________ My bologna has a first name it’s __________

Most likely, as soon as you read these lyrics you could immediately fill in the rest of the jingle. (and for those of you who were stumped - lucky you that you weren’t brainwashed like the rest of us - the answers are at the bottom.) Commercial jingles and songs prove how a piece of music, when heard a few times, can stay in your mind and infiltrate your subconscious. The question to ask yourself is: Are these messages what you really want floating around in your head and unconsciously repeating over and over? It’s All About The Hook When I was learning to be a commercial songwriter, it was practically drilled into my mind that the main thing in writing a hit song or jingle was having a great “hook”. A hook is a line, phrase or repeating musical idea that literally “hooks” the listener into wanting to hear that song again. Remember when you were a teenager and you just couldn't wait ‘till they played your favorite song on the radio? The problem I had with being a commercial songwriter was that I was encouraged to write songs with themes of loneliness, despair, my-man-done-left-me kind of songs. I would plumb the depths of my soul, writing lyrics that would recount bad relationships, how hard life was, and basically celebrate victim consciousness. I would write songs hoping for a hit. I never imagined that singing these negative messages could be affecting my life. Then one day it happened. I was asked to sing at a New Thought church and only accepted the gig cause’ it was close to home and easy money. “Just sing a few happy songs”, the Minister told me. So I sang my songs ( I did have a few positive messages in my repertoire! ) and after listening to the Minister’s message, and seeing how people reacted to my lyrics - I got it! I made the connection between singing positive lyrics and how it made me feel inside. I was hooked! I began writing melodies to my affirmations, and came up with simple chants and songs affirming my prosperity, health, having thin thighs - anything and everything that I wanted in my life - and it felt great! I began recording this new music and a whole new career was born. Research reveals that we have over 60 thousand thoughts a day. I began to wonder how many of my thoughts during the day were positive and affirming, or negative and self-depreciating. When I started to turn my attention to writing songs and chants that had a positive message, I was amazed at the changes in my life. I was healthier, happier, and bad relationships disappeared. I started to notice the messages that I was singing were miraculously manifesting in my life. My friend Alan Cohen says in his book, “A Deep Breath of Life”,

Page 6: Issue #39, June 2008 Our online New Thought music ...av.unityonline.org/en/association/ministriesLeaders/musicMinistry/... · Our online New Thought music community is now over 1650

“If you hold an image in mind long enough and feel it as real, you can manifest it... hold in mind images of the life you desire, and refuse to feed thoughts of what you do not wish. Watch your words.” So take the time to listen to what that voice inside your head is actually saying. I believe that our inner critic is simply doing its job of keeping us stuck in old belief patterns that don’t serve our highest good. You can make the changes and choose to input positive thoughts. You can choose to listen to music that uplifts and inspires you. You can become conscious and replace the negative self-talk with fun, positive musical messages. The changes can be amazing. “Tame” That Inner Critic With A Song

When I teach my chanting workshops, I demonstrate this technique. We take the negative self-talk, discover the truth of who we really are, and then turn it into a song. Just taking simple songs and adding in whatever you want to claim in your life can bring about change. One student talked about a job interview that she was nervous about. She wanted a melody that would be like an anthem and would empower her when she felt nervous. We chose the song “This Land Is Your Land.” I asked her to write lyrics focusing on a positive outcome. Then I had her visualize that the interview was successful, that she landed the job, and feel how she felt. She wrote: This job is wonderful! I am so happy! I am creative, and I am free! I make great money with paid vacations! This job is made just for me!

A few days later, I got an e-mail from her. She said singing that song over and over helped her to “tame” that critical voice. It made her feel good, radiate positive energy and centered her when she felt nervous. It didn’t surprise me when she said that she was hired on the spot! The music that I write and record now is all about reprogramming my critic and affirming what I DO want in my life. I am hoping that my songs do the same for other people. I feel so blessed when I hear how my chants about healing are helping people with cancer, or my chants about gratitude are part of someone’s daily spiritual practice. So I ask you...What is your voice saying? What does your critic say when you are moving out of your safety zone and moving towards your dreams? I encourage you to listen to the music that resonates with the positive qualities that you want to affirm in your life. Dance to it, sing along with it – you’ll be amazed how good it will make you feel! Answers to the jingles from above: 1. Oh what a relief it is 2. To McDonalds 3. Oscar Karen Drucker is an inspirational singer/songwriter with 12 CDs of her chants and songs. She was awarded an honorary doctorate for her musical contribution to the New Thought movement, and performs with Joan Borysenko, Alan Cohen, SARK, Mary Manin Morrissey and others. She leads women's retreats and sings at conferences around the country. For more information: www.karendrucker.com

It embraces diversity, builds community, cares for the Earth, entertains possibility, and raises consciousness for social justice, self-awareness, authenticity, and integrity”. David Roth Artist Representative, Empower Music & Arts

Thank you David Roth for this definition of what Posi music is that pretty much says it all. This year there were nearly 500 songs submitted for the fourth annual Posi Awards. A nominating committee made up of artists, industry people and fans, rated the songs in six categories to come up with these 21 nominees. These songs will be sent to a distinguished panel of judges to rate and their ratings will determine who gets the “Posi” in September. These songs will be released on Itoi Ministries’ annual Tribute CD which will be out in early July. If you’d like to hear them sooner, tune into www.Unity.FM (don’t forget the dot) on Friday, June 13 and June 20 at 2:00 p.m. central time to hear them on the PosiPalooza Music That Matters Radio program. They will also be aired on SEEQ radio www.quantumquest.org in June. Go to their program guide for air dates and times.

Congratulations to this year’s nominees. NOTE: the names across from the songs are the names of the people who are the artists who recorded the songs. 1122 WWOOMMEENN OOFF TTHHEE CCHHAALLIICCEE a journey of music and meditation exploring the feminine aspect of the 12 powers.

By Sue K. Riley and Leddy Hammock Rating 5 out of 5

Few CD’s I listen to transcend the function of providing music to the listener and become a spiritual experience. Whether or not it’s because of where I am at in my personal life, I can tell you that this CD touched me deeply. It is a co-creation by Reverend Leddy Hammock(words and lyrics) and prominent New Thought artist Sue K Riley (music and voice). Reverend Leddy intros the CD explaining that this CD focuses on 12 women of the Bible who each represent a particular spiritual faculty. She then guides the listener into a 2-3 minute meditation which is then followed by a song that embodies that spiritual faculty. Leddy’s gentle nature captures and comforts the listener. Sue then affirms Leddy’s message with skillfully crafted lyrics that are accentuated with her beautiful voice and beautiful melodies. I have never heard a better example of what co-creation between a minister and a music minister should be. This is the bench mark! Not only will it give each music director plenty of music and meditations to work with, it will empower ALL who hear it. “Divine Order” (song for Mary, wife of Alphaeus) and “Pour over me Holy Spirit” (prayer of release for Bathsheba) are instant classics. I also really liked “Leave These Walls Behind” (prayer of spiritual life for Rahab) and “Do You See Anything New In Me?” (Prayer of pure love for Mary of Nazereth) This is a must have for your church’s music Library!! Reviewed by -Chris Foster This is a PERFECT CD for me........I've been wanting some guided meditation, since I can't seem to shut up the voices that are constantly yapping at me in my head.........but to add the songs, written and sung so beautifully, so prayerfully........it's just amazing, original, and inspired. Please give Leddy my love and thanks and congratulations also. Sue K Riley....The FEELER! Karen Taylor Good

88 –– TThhee MMAAIILLBBOOXX -- YYOOUURR LLEETTTTEERRSS // QQ&&AA Hi Richard Thanks for all the great work you do - these sound connections e-magazines are just such a connector to all of us out in the world doing pozi music! yea for you! Karen Drucker WINGS OF SONG OUTREACH PROGRAM Sound Connections Community, A couple of months ago I, Richard Carr, was the featured artist from the road. One church contacting me has asked for assistance in replacing Wings of Song Hymnals. This has led to an outreach program I would like to propose to the Sound Connections community. Even as many churches are slowly phasing out their Wings of Song Hymnals, there are as many, if not more, still using them as their main or only source of congregational music. There is a need at some churches for Wings of Song and there are Wings of Song sitting on a shelf at other churches. My idea is simply to get these two groups together. So, here is the idea laid out as simply as I can.

1. Develop a list of churches and contacts for those who have Wings of Song hymnals no longer in use, the number of hymnals available and any costs that might be involved.

2. Put the word out to all Unity churches looking for Wings of Song hymnals and the number of hymnals they are looking for.

3. Once a church contacts me with a number of hymnals, I will check the list and contact the church nearest to requesting church and put them in contact with each other. If necessary, I can be the middle man assuring that everything gets done in a timely fashion.

I am willing to coordinate this outreach program. It is my hope that many of the Sound Connections community will be willing to participate. Anyone wanting to participate in this outreach program please send an email to [email protected] with the following information: Church name

Page 10: Issue #39, June 2008 Our online New Thought music ...av.unityonline.org/en/association/ministriesLeaders/musicMinistry/... · Our online New Thought music community is now over 1650

Contact person Contact person’s email and phone number # of Wings of Song available Price per hymnal (if any)

Here is the information on the first church who has expressed desire to get Wings of Song hymnals:

The Unity Church of North Bend, OR is about 25 years old with 35-50 people in attendance each Sunday. Several years ago their minister decided to get rid of all the Wings of Song hymnals. That minister is no longer with them and they are trying to rebuild their music program. They are still in need of 40 hymnals. Without the necessary finances to be able to purchase new hymnals, it is my hope that members of the Sound Connections community can send one or two hymnals without charge to assist the rebuilding of their music ministry. In order to prevent an overabundance of hymnals arriving to Unity Church of North Bend, I would like to have anyone willing to send Wings of Song to contact me at [email protected]. I will have the vital mailing information and keep track of the number of hymnals going to Oregon.

Expressing joy and gratitude to all for your interest and willingness to help another church build their music ministry by participating in this outreach program! Richard Carr, The “Wandering Instru-minstral” SCOTT BECK REPLY TO CD REVIEW Richard ~ Thank you so much for having Chris Foster review my CD for Sound Connections. I really appreciate your help and his positive feedback. With regards to his comment about so many of the songs being in the key of F, perhaps you could pass on to him that my reason for writing 8 of the 12 songs in that key is because that is the tone associated with the heart chakra in vibrational sound healing circles. As a former massage therapist and vibrational healer I felt that by presenting the songs in that key they could aid in opening the heart of the listeners to assist them in their personal healing journeys. And there are a lot of hearts around the world that need healing. I am still receiving referrals from some of the churches I have played, and will send them soon, along with my write up. Looks like I won't be heading on the road until early August, as that is when my wife will be able to leave her position at work and join me. I would love to submit "Open My Heart" for consideration in one of your songbooks, but I don't read or write music, so if you can suggest where I can get the needed lead sheet made up I would get that done for you. Pease and blessings, Scott Beck Victories? Concerns? Need to find a piece of music for a certain occasion or topic? Audio, video, or choral challenges? Ask your question(s). It will be put out to our “experts in the field” and answered in our next edition of SOUND CONNECTIONS.

Nestled in the high forests of Brasstown Bald in North Georgia, this shade-dappled village of cabins, hotel-style rooms, dorms and retreat house can sleep over 200 and there is RV and tent camping along several of the many streams that lace the 60 acre non-profit land trust. Meals, with veggies & fruits often harvested fresh from Enota’s organic garden, are prepared and served at The

Lodge. In addition to the enclosed pavilion for large gatherings or harkaizing that can accommodate more than a hundred people, there are many other indoor and outdoor spaces for smaller meetings, ensemble rehearsals, sectionals and classes. Whether you wish to pray in the wilderness, play music in the Nutshell, putter in the garden, ponder beside the waterfalls, or pet the llamas at the Animal Sanctuary, the staff at Enota will make you feel at home and at peace. Did we mention the trampolines, fishing and hiking???? Probably not, so be sure to visit www.enota.com or call 800-990-8869 for more info, or for music retreat
