11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! I attended an event in Phoenix the last weekend in March called “Harmonizing With Humanity” where Itoi Ministries hosted a Mega PosiPalooza concert out in the middle of the desert on a beautiful Spring night under the stars with 10 of our best known and loved artists. There, we unveiled our new and soon to be up,

online community, not only for artists, songwriters and music directors but for authors and speakers as well. Itoi will now be known as Empower Music and Arts and the plan for this member supported community that offers services and tools specifically for the New Thought cultural creatives was overwhelmingly exciting and positive. The discussion also ensued among the 30 plus artists and Industry folks there about what to call our music that would include but not limit us to the spiritual arm that is our mainstay and also include the more generic “positive” music that is the trademark of many other artists in this genre. The answer came through our good friend Armand who went to the internet and found the word “Posi” in Wikopedia and in the Urban Dictionary. Here are the definitions that are already being used in our pop and urban culture. Wikopedia - Posi may refer to: Posi - a youth oriented movement, similar to straight edge , promoting proactiveness, well being, a drug-free atmosphere, and a general "positive" outlook on life. The Urban Dictionary 1. Posi – Short for positive, and is widely accepted term among scenster hardcore kids. Most commonly used in songs by the band Good Clean Fun. “ Dude, that wasn’t very posi.” 2. Posi – Short for positive. Being upbeat and having a positive outlook on life. “I’m feelin’ posi, nothing can hold me down.” 3. Posi – short for the word positive. Commonly referred to in the style of hardcore music. Positive hardcore becomes posi hardcore or posi core. “That song is so posi.” Or “That band has a posi vibe.”

Page 3: Issue #37, April 2008 Our online New Thought music ...av.unityonline.org/en/association/ministriesLeaders/musicMinistry/... · Our online New Thought music community is now over 1600

A quick pole of the artists was very “posi” about the term, especially since we already have the “Posi Awards” and PosiPalooza Concerts! So Empower Music and Arts will begin branding the music as Posi with sub categories such as “PosiFolk”, “PosiPop”, “PosiNewThought”, “PosiRock”, “PosiRap” etc. Please let me know your thoughts and feelings about that and I’ll keep you all updated on this exciting transformation and the growing industry for “Posi music. This issue of Sound Connections includes a link to the registration form for the 2008 New Thought Music Week, new resources, part two of “The Healing Power of Music”, and our featured artist and CD, Ann Licater. Enjoy. Enough talk, now let’s get CONNECTED!! Always remember: “You are crucial to the growth of the New Thought movement. You can and DO make a difference!” Richard Mekdeci Sacred Music Resources Association of Unity Churches International

The Healing Power of Music (part 2) By Dana Clark This two part series is extracted highlights from a chapter contributed by Dana for the book “Insights On The Journey – Trauma, Healing & Wholeness: an anthology of women’s writing” being published by the local Peace Center in San Antonio, Texas. The book will be available Spring of 2008 at www.salsa.net/peace. To read the entire article now, go to www.lewisandclarkmusic.com

Some of my students have suffered from depression. Sitting beside them at the piano, I have had the opportunity to watch from a front row seat as music does its healing work. A recently widowed older woman came back to life as she learned how to play piano the way she’d always wanted. Her energy might seem low at the beginning of a lesson, but as we worked her mood would lighten, and she would leave proclaiming that what she had learned was “exciting!” I knew she was back on her feet when her life became too busy to continue lessons! Many of my musician friends who play in nursing homes have told me that elderly people who are usually non-responsive can become animated and even sing lyrics perfectly even though they can no longer speak! They seem to “wake up,” remaining alert for a period even after the music ends. It’s true that “you can’t take it with you when you go.” This applies to music as well, but the songs that you learn may stay with you longer than anything else in life. They may provide others with a way of interacting with you after all other ways are gone.

GIVE IT A TRY: Mood and behavior can be greatly influenced by music. Find a song that encourages your personal growth, and listen to it frequently. Think of it as “medicine.” Learn to sing it. Make it your theme song—part of the soundtrack of your life. Paste the lyrics on your bathroom mirror. Soon you will find it playing on your “internal radio” like one of those advertising jingles that get stuck in your head. The song will continue to work its magic as you go through your day, whether you are consciously aware of it or not, encouraging you to make healthy changes in your life. When the song begins to lose its power, find a new one to take its place. Search out songwriters whose music revolves around the themes you need. For the last five years I have been Music Director at the Unity Church of San Antonio. I have had the opportunity to write songs for the services, many of which are about personal healing and transformation. I am glad to be carrying on the age-old tradition, apparent in all cultures, of using music to enhance spiritual experience. Writing about serious subjects forces me to think deeply about what is true for me. I very much appreciate the challenge, and the songs that result are some of the ones I value most. For the most part, I try to avoid using religious language, since that can sometimes close minds against the message. Instead my aim is to focus on what is universally true about spiritual experience. This makes it possible for the songs to be useful in a wide range of performance situations. GIVE IT A TRY: You can write songs! Write about changes in your life that you are trying to understand. As you write you will have the opportunity to discover what you really feel

Page 6: Issue #37, April 2008 Our online New Thought music ...av.unityonline.org/en/association/ministriesLeaders/musicMinistry/... · Our online New Thought music community is now over 1600

about your subject. We all have a unique perspective and a valuable message to express. Putting your bit of truth in a song turns it into something that can be shared. There are books in your local library that will give you practical guidelines about how to approach songwriting. You can find songwriting seminars on the internet. For an easy start, take a song you are familiar with and rewrite the words. After you are happy with the words, change the melody. There you have it—a brand new song! I have always loved singing. Piano was my first instrument. I began playing flute in the school band when I was nine. While in high school I learned to play guitar. In recent years, following my own advice that it is never too late, I have begun learning other instruments. I discovered that once you play one kind of flute, the rest are easy. Mandolin has been a joy, and saxophone is my newest passion. GIVE IT A TRY: Each new instrument you learn is easier. By the time you get to three instruments, the rest seem like a snap! Every new instrument provides a different perspective that enables you to play your first instrument better. Take a chance! If you’ve played guitar all your life, learn something about piano. If you’ve always been a singer, try learning guitar. Your opportunities and progress will be enhanced. You will find new inspiration in old musical activities that might have become routine. Music has been my greatest comfort. Music has saved my sanity. Writing songs has saved my life. I believe music is magic. I believe music is medicine. I believe music can work miracles. I believe music can help us remake the world. It is my hope for us all that we find the healing we need. I hope music helps you as much as it has helped me.

Hopeful Heart

A hopeful heart can change the blackest night to brightest light A hopeful heart transforms our aching pain to pure delight

Even when our dreams have died, the world seems torn apart Nothing can resist the power Nothing can resist the power

Of a hopeful heart

I’m filled with gratefulness today for what tomorrow brings Empowered now by hope I’m finding joy in everything

Despair has tried to tell me my faith cannot be restored But blessings stand outside and knock

Blessings stand outside and knock So hope opens the door

A hopeful heart A hopeful heart

Nothing can resist the power Of a hopeful heart

Yes, hope supplies a fearless faith that makes our dreams come true

Even when we face a choice and don’t know what to do

A still small voice will guide us as we make a brand new start For Spirit speaks most clearly

Spirit speaks most clearly To a hopeful heart

When success seems out of reach and we’re afraid to lose We must come to see that we are always free to choose

To search for hints of sunshine though the clouds are all around For the glass is half full and rising

The glass is half full and rising Not half empty, going down

AANNNN LLIICCAATTEERR Bring this Internationally-recognized Native American

and World Flutist to your church! Greetings to you!

I am thrilled to be featured in this month’s “From the Road.” I have always loved providing music for Sunday service. I was involved incampus ministry as a college student in Minnesota where I grew up playing silver flute. I still love to play during service but now I carry a dozen or more Native American and World flutes with me and perform in all types of venues, teach workshops and play during mid-week meditations as well as on Sundays. My home is now based out of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Spirituality, Music and Magic. As long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in spirituality. I discovered the Native

American flute at a local powwow and applied my classical flute training to this ancient instrument. After receiving my Master’s degree, I had a strong urge to follow my bliss and become a professional musician focusing on the spiritual aspects of music. I had no idea where this would take me, but the joy and rewards of my decision continue to uplift me every day. I had the opportunity to study with master Native American flutist, R. Carlos Nakai at the “Renaissance of the Native American Flute” and also met flute players from all over the world who have shared their teachings with me. The result of finding and following my path has been magical. I am grateful that my music has been received so well.

(see a review of Ann’s debut CD “Following the Call” in this issue.)

New Thought Churches and Introspective Music. Unity and other New Thought churches lend themselves perfectly for the meditative music I so enjoy expressing. My music is best used as an introspective “spice.” As a featured performer, I can be hired to join the regular music program and then be inserted into meditations before or during the service, play under spoken visualizations, during offertory and as a special featured song. Although I play solo, I also enjoy improvising with other musicians (e.g., guitar or piano) and this is often a highlight for musicians and congregants alike. When Rev. Audrey Peterson of Unity of the Valley in Savage, Minnesota invited me to play and work with their music director, Jimmy Steffen, we did exactly that. I was able to weave my unique style of playing into their existing format while offering a new perspective for those who had never heard this type of music live.

Flute for the Soul Workshops and Concerts: One of my favorite experiences is to perform in concert and talk about the origins of my flutes. Giving a Saturday evening concert prior to a Sunday service is a great way to expose more people to the flutes and have a broader musical experience. I also teach my Flute for the Soul Workshops. These are well placed after a Sunday service. Here I lead participants in creative and meditative exercises while I play a full spectrum of flutes. The sound vibrations of these contemporary replicas of ancient instruments can help build intuitive skills for self-discovery. Another way to look at this is it’s a private concert for two hours in a workshop setting. Some say my music feels like a spa treatment for their soul. I love to play, listen to the sighs and see the smiles when people go into that far-away place that is “home” to all of us.

New Thought Churches and Native American Flute Music. Dave DiLullo, music director at Center for Spiritual Living San Jose, was interviewed by the Willow Glen Resident last August and talked about my Native American flute music. In the article he says: “The effect that Licater's flutes have on others is evident at the center…People love it. They are moved, and some say they go into meditative states. Regardless of what their belief, many say the music resonates with them." He continues to say that the music and the sound of the flute play an important role at the center, “Licater’s choice of instrument is also a breath of fresh air. The flute is both new and old. It's an ancient instrument. It's simple and uses the human breath as a medium."

More Information: This year I am playing at festivals and events around the country so I want to connect with New Thought music directors around these specific locations. In June I will be in Utah for the Zion Canyon Art and Flute Festival and July in Eau Claire, WI for an international flute event. As my tour unfolds, I will want to incorporate more churches into my schedule. Generally, I play in California and the West Coast because I am based out of the San Francisco Bay Area.

I invite you to learn more about my musical offerings by visiting www.fluteforthesoul.com or www.myspace.com/annlicater Also, I can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 408-499-1300.

Many Blessings, Ann

AAnnnn LLiiccaatteerr Following the Call Wood & Clay Flute Music for Meditation and Inspiration Reviewed by Richard Mekdeci

There has always been a mystical magical aura around the Native American flute in spirituality and religious rites. The sound is rich and natural;

emanating from living wood and clay instruments. You can also go a step farther to say that the instruments are imbued with the energy of those who crafted them and therefore dictate to the one playing, it’s own mystic melody.

Whatever your attraction to this sound, or to its culture, you can not find it better represented anywhere than on Ann Licater’s “Following The Call” CD.

Ann is a classically trained silver flutist and she uses that training to create original melodies and improvisational compositions especially for these sacred instruments. This makes “Following The Call” ideal for use as underscoring for your meditations during services or even under prayer time for small groups and classes.

Following the Call will also work its magic on the individual. I have it playing as I write this review. It is non-obtrusive and calming. The notes on the back of the CD say “Use this CD to balance body/mind/spirit, gain access to intuition and as a tool for personal discovery while meditating, journaling and creating.”

It’s evident that Ann has a personal relationship with each of her instruments as she credits the artisans who created each flute used on that particular track. Occasionally a second flute voice will emerge and form beautiful harmonies with the first in a conversation of open 4th and 5th intervals. It’s not noted on these tracks, but I would be curious to know whether there is a second artist, whether the second flute is overdubbed or whether Ann is playing a double flute live.

Ann uses many different flutes to create “Following The Call” which help give variety of key and timber to an experience that could easily become monotonous. There are 16 unique, individual selections on FTC, yet each selection flows into the next creating a seamless pallet of just about any length from two minutes up to the total CD time of 51 minutes.

“Following the Call” was featured in Organic Spa Magazine, became the #1-selling music CD at the nation’s largest body/mind/spirit store, continues to air on nationally-syndicated Music Choice Soundscapes cable channel and was just nominated for “Best Native American Album” by New Age Reporter’s 2007 LifeStyle Music Awards. It is also distributed by DeVorss & Company so New Thought Church bookstores can easily order it.

My suggestion though would be to bring Ann to your church or center and buy your CD directly from her.

Plan Your Musical or Spiritual Retreat at Enota

Enota, Cherokee for ‘the land that nourishes,’ is a beautiful mountain retreat center ideal for your next musical or spiritual retreat. Nestled in the high forests of Brasstown Bald in North Georgia, this shade-dappled village of cabins, hotel-style rooms, dorms and retreat house can sleep over 200 and there is RV and tent camping along several of the many streams that lace the 60 acre non-profit land trust. Meals, with veggies & fruits often harvested fresh from Enota’s organic garden, are prepared and served at The

Lodge. In addition to the enclosed pavilion for large gatherings or harkaizing that can accommodate more than a hundred people, there are many other indoor and outdoor spaces for smaller meetings, ensemble rehearsals, sectionals and classes. Whether you wish to pray in the wilderness, play music in the Nutshell, putter in the garden, ponder beside the waterfalls, or pet the llamas at the Animal Sanctuary, the staff at Enota will make you feel at home and at peace. Did we mention the trampolines, fishing and hiking???? Probably not, so be sure to visit www.enota.com or call 800-990-8869 for more info, or for music retreat
