Congratulations boys! A big thank you to all the parents who attended to support our teams. Thank you to Mr Anstee and especially, Jonathan Hansford (Year 5 student), who coached the teams and helped make the day a great success.

Level Lowdown Level 1 This week the Prep students have really enjoyed learning how to use their own spelling journal. We really enjoyed our first visit from Paul and Carl, our friendly fire fighters from the Mentone Fire Brigade. Tomorrow they will show us their fire truck. Here are a few reminders for you:

Please make sure you have discussed your fire plan with your whole family.

Regularly check the communication board for upcoming events, our current Statement of Intent and any updates.

We would love you to sign up for parent help. Your child will receive an invitation to join the World Mania challenge, with instruction on how to register. This is done by Monday. Thankyou to Troy Navez –D’Aubremont and Melissa Fitzpatrick for being our parent experts this week!

Level 2

Year 2 What a wonderful day we had at the Werribee Zoo. There are some children reinforcing there understanding of this excursion with discussion of animals that they saw, building animal enclosures in Investigations and relating their knowledge of Collective Nouns to different groups of animals such as a herd of zebra, a flock of birds and a pack of wild dogs.

Performance Night rehearsals are going very well. Don’t forget to keep Thursday 25th October free to be entertained by

the Year 2s. Many children have brought their costumes ready for the dress rehearsal on Friday 19th October so please

remember to bring, preferably named, items of clothing in a named bag by this Friday.

Level 3

Year 3 This week we have been very busy reading and writing explanations about all sorts of things from dreamtime stories to

inventions. We’re having lots of fun learning how and why things work. We are also continuing our ‘Run Around Australia’

challenge and are well on the way to Western Australia – fingers crossed that we make it back to Melbourne by Christmas!

Year 4 On Wednesday 10th October the Year 4’s were invited to Federation Square to view the temporary exhibition 'The New Jonses'. ‘The New Jonses’ was an experimental project where two people lived in a sustainable pop up apartment for five days. They were only able to borrow, rent, swap or source goods which were second hand. The exhibition showcased how to live more sustainably and how to interact with the community to find alternative sources of food and other items.

After a quick break our next stop was The Shrine of Remembrance. Undertaking guided educational tours the students

developed their understanding of the Shrine as a place to honour our servicemen and women and learn about our nation’s

wartime history. The tours, led by the Shrine’s education staff, explored both the Shrines interior and reserve. Highlights

included viewing of The Gallery of Medals - The Victoria Cross, & The Changi Flag, as well as visiting Commemorative

areas such as the Forecourt, and The Crypt. The tours also included a short Service of Remembrance and an opportunity to

reflect and lay our own poppies.

Level 4 In Level 4 this week we have continued to immerse ourselves in our new learning focus: Health. We have learnt about the effects that legal drugs have on our body and we have investigated the various support networks that are available in our community. We have also begun to embark on our journey towards creating fitter and healthier selves. We look forward to visiting the Body Exhibition in a couple of weeks to learn more about our subject focus. Congratulations to our Hoop Time Boys and Girls All Stars teams for competing in the Regional Finals yesterday and good luck to our Boys 5/6 Basketball Team who are competing in the next round today.

Science This weekend we wish our Solar Boat Challenge Team the best of luck and plenty of sunshine when they compete in the annual Model Solar Vehicle Challenge at Scienceworks. Our team comprises of six Year 5 students who have been working diligently to prepare a model solar boat that meets all criteria for the challenge. The students are: Kate Dunk (5C) Chloe Rance (5PJ) Lili Pingiaro (5C) Bhuvi Gupta (5PJ) Tristan Prazeus (5P) and Mia Watkins (5PJ). They started in Term 2 with a solar boat making workshop which was held at Black Rock Primary with other Bayside Science Cluster schools including Black Rock, Sandringham East, Beaumaris North and Cheltenham Primary Schools. During term 3 they worked on trialling and rebuilding their boat and at the end of the term they came up with their final design which was tested at Gills Nursery’s display pool against the other cluster boats. In constructing our boats we had assistance from Hayley Oliver, a student teacher from Deakin University (who volunteered her time on Wednesday lunchtime) and two Year 9 (Dan and Cal) students from Beaumaris Campus. Our final testing trial at Gills Nursery was this afternoon and now we can’t wait for the weekend’s event at Scienceworks where there are over 100 solar boats entered. Our Solar Boat Team members will report to everyone next week on their experience.

Report from our School Council President, Michael Scott, to update you on this week’s School Council Meeting Despite there being fewer sub-committee meetings and reports to consider than usual due to holidays occurring since last month’s meeting, there were plenty of matters for discussion, and as a consequence the meeting went for a near record 2 hours and 45 minutes. Items discussed included:

a proposed survey to assist future planning for the bike enclosure

installation of new outdoor picnic furniture to occur shortly

options for enhancing communication channels

initial planning for the school’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2015

publishing a timetable to confirm bookings for after school use of basketball and netball courts

oval upkeep and maintenance of buildings and grounds

potential grants to apply for

activities and plans for student learning and teacher professional development occurring in Term 4

proposal to undertake a parent/carer opinion survey in Term 4. In addition, School Council approved:

29 & 30 January 2013 as student free curriculum days at the (start of Term 1) - consistent with this year’s approach

the appointment of Megan Martin to fill a casual vacancy as a parent representative on School Council, and Simon Wilson as an observer

the reopening of the canteen for the remainder of Term 4

KINDER-PREP TRANSITION Today we welcomed our 2013 prep students and parents for our first transition day. Our new preps experienced the exciting prep environment and visited our flourishing kitchen garden and our five chickens. Parents had the opportunity to meet and listen to David Anderson, one of our Educational Consultants. David shared ideas and tips about resilience, responsibility and how best to prepare preschool children as they head towards the new learning environment. STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND WELLBEING This week from Michael Grose. This week’s article is entitled ‘Increase good feelings at home’ relates to creating family harmony. Enjoy!

Education Maintenance Allowance - information for parents currently

receiving EMA

Changes to the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) for 2013:

The EMA continues to help families on lower incomes with financial assistance to cover the cost of educational expenses including textbooks, stationery, uniforms and excursions for their child up until the age of 16.

From 2013, the Victorian Government is restructuring the EMA to better target financial support to families on lower incomes.

Payments made direct to parents will be increased for eligible recipients at all year levels up to age 16, with an additional

increase for parents with students in Years Prep and 7 in recognition of the additional costs at these transition points.

In 2013 the annual EMA payment for families with children in primary school (years 1-6) will receive a payment of $150.

Families with children in secondary school (Year 8 up until the age of 16) will receive an annual payment of $250.

The School Start Bonus which was previously received by EMA families has been discontinued as a separate payment from

2013. However, additional funding has been incorporated into the EMA meaning that parents of children in Prep and Year 7

will receive boosted EMA payments of $200 and $300 respectively in those years.

From 2013, the EMA will no longer be paid 50/50 between the parent and the school. The 50% school portion of the EMA will

no longer be paid to schools on behalf of parents. However, $62 million over four years will be redirected to the State’s most

needy schools to assist families on lower incomes. These funds will form part of the school Student Resource Packages to be

allocated at the local level.

New EMA payment option

From 2013, on the EMA application form you can choose to have your EMA payment;

Paid by direct deposit (Electronic Funds Transfer) into your nominated bank account or

Paid by cheque which will be posted to the school for collection or Paid to the school to be held as credit which you can use towards education expenses

The introduction of the new payment option to have the EMA payment directed to the school provides parents with extra

flexibility to assist with budgeting towards education expenses.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the EMA in 2013, you must:

be either a parent or guardian of a primary or secondary school student up to the age of sixteen; and

be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State Concessions Act

2004* or be a Veterans Affairs (TPI) pensioner or be a temporary foster parent.

* i.e – the parent/guardian must be the holder of a valid Health Care Card or valid Pension Card.

The eligibility criteria must be met as at 29 January 2013 (Instalment One) and 15 July 2013 (Instalment Two).

Payment Amounts - 2013:

*Student year level (or age for ungraded and special school students) will determine the amount payable. Parents of students t urning 16

years in 2013 are paid on a pro rata basis.

Contact: School Office for an EMA application form and to lodge your application. The closing date for EMA application forms

to be submitted to the school is 28 February 2013.
