C O M The last six months, RSDR have been dealing with issues with the Municipality in applying for the change of use and a building visa so that we can start renovaons. Permis- sion for a new fence has also been refused..These past few months have been very ring and a bit of a nightmare in trying to get anything done. We have unfortunately not made much head way in any renovaons to the building itself or for a fence to be replaced with panels. Just recently, Tony went back to the municipality, yet again over permission to replace the fence. This me he was told that we won’t get permission for the shelter to be renovated, won’t get permission to replace the fence and to get rid of the dogs. Last Tuesday 28 June, four policemen turned up saying they had to do an inspecon and report as I was running a shel- ter for dogs aſter the change of use had been refused and it has been reported. They had a peon with about 50 signa- tures on it. Only one of them spoke to me while the others went round taking photographs. There is no smell, no nui- sance to anyone and the complaints were purely on the grounds that we are within 300 metres of the nearest hous- es, so apparently I am breaking the law. The policemen saw all the documents such as the founda- on registraon, the notary deeds for purchase of the build- ing, the applicaon for change of use and for a new fence and I explained that we have tried to do eve- rything as it should be done but we are opposed every step of the way. I had to sign the report which I was told said they had done an inspecon, seen all the documents and that all the animals were healthy and cared for. They said that there will be another visit from Smolian police next week. I did ask what the outcome is likely to be but they didn’t tell me. My biggest fear is that they can order us not to have any dogs here or at the family house which does have close neighbours. At the moment we have 45 dogs at the shelter building and over 30 at the house with the other 30 being with Kerry and Kosta at Veliko Turnovo. I have wrien to our lawyer about the change of use being refused and he said it is a maer that has to be resolved locally which doesn’t really help as no one here will tell us if there is anything we can do to get it changed. The only advice we have had is from someone who told us just to carry on with what we are doing and reapply for everything aſter the elecons. That was before the police visit though and now I don’t know if they can actually make a charge against me or insist that the dogs go. All I know is if they did send one of the isolators round to take the dogs, then I will most likely end up in prison because there is no way on earth that I would let them take any of the dogs to one of those death camps. The police came to the house today and served both Tony and I with a letter order-

ing us to go to the police station on the 7th July for questioning over keeping dogs

at the building in Elhovets which is the proposed shelter. I sent copies of the letters

to people who have been helping and advising us and one very helpful and knowl-

edgeable man has said that he will do his best to come with us to the police station

and bring a lawyer. I really can't believe that any of this is happening. It is a night-

mare. All we want to do is to be able to carry on with the work we are doing, save

more dogs, renovate the building and start a neutering programme, in other words

to do for free what the municipality should already be doing by law. RSDR will up-

date with news on the outcome on the 7th July on what happens at the police sta-

tion.

Unfortunately we have decided to close the RSDR branch in Veliko Turnovo run by

Kerry Rowles and her partner Kosta Chakurov as we feel it has become too danger-

ous for them to stay there. It has lately become a concern about the safety and dan-

ger of Kerry & Kosta and the dogs at the VT Branch. Kerry is 20 weeks pregnant,

and has been followed around continually by gypsy men harassing her, even going as

far as to bare their asses at her and laughing and following her making comments. It

is a danger that she is being constantly surveyed and watched. RSDR are concerned

for her safety. Gypsies in town are also trying to make claims that they have been

bitten by dogs from RSDR, even though the dogs are not near them, and are also

locked at the house.

Just recently, a dog at RSDR

was shot in the backyard of the house Kerry & Kosta are staying at. It has be-

come dangerous now that the animals are being shot at also, and we have de-

cided the branch should close.

Last Thursday evening after returning home from the shop, Kerry & Kosta found

Rambo laying down and unresponsive. They managed to get him inside and

despite drinking more than usual they couldn’t tempt him with food, even chick-

en.

On Friday morning after being sick during the night they rushed him to the vets.

After numerous tests the vet was no closer to knowing what was wrong with him,

the only thing that caught their attention was an air rifle bullet under the skin

between his ribs and back legs. At the time they dismissed it as an old shooting as they couldn’t find an entry wound. The next day

Kosta found the wound, on Rambo's other side. The bullet has passed right through him and started to come out the other side. The

vet said the bullet had passed through his colon. Rambo still won’t eat much, but he seems to be picking up. He is named well, as

he definitely is a fighter and we hope he will get through this!!

URGENT APPEAL FOR DONATIONS FOR WOOD PENS.

With wanting to close the VT branch as soon as possible ,we need urgent donations towards buying wood to build more pens for the

dogs at VT to go to Rudozem. If you can please help by giving a donation to RSDR, please visit the donation page at: http://

We were having a BBQ for Nikitas birthday early June. This old fella must have smelt the sausages and came wandering up to the fence. Luke saw him and fed him. The poor dog was absolutely starving and so skinny. We said we couldn’t take anymore dogs,as there was no room in the building. But this was a desperate case. After juggl-ing dogs around in pens, we fed him, wormed him, treated him for fleas, and he went straight to bed.

On the June 17th, Tony found this young female dog in an absolute panic. She had been spayed and ear tagged but instead of being released where she was found, she ended up on the streets of Rudozem in an absolute panic. Her wound was very badly infected. She has been named Nina.

Nikita and new kitten Bumble. Sam and Nikita found this little boy Kitten in the town centre ly-ing in the middle of the road not moving, so they took him home.

There was a thunderstorm in the town one night, Luke waiting to get picked up heard a little kitten crying. He called to her and she came running up to him.

Earlier this month a man came to the house and asked

Tony to take these 8 very scared pups. A street dog had

given birth to them on his property. The mother left the

pups at 4 weeks old and the woman next door was go-

ing to put a trap down to kill the pups. The pups have

been named Freckles, Gawghee, Groova, Maddie, Mari-

lyn, Possum, Rowlf and Spencer.

Originally we had to cancel the June adoption trip due to

not having enough dogs to travel. However Pet Chauffeurs

said they still had to travel this month to Bulgaria to pick up

some other animals from elsewhere. They offered to take

any dogs from RSDR for a price per dog, instead of for a full

trip. So adopted dogs Billy, Laika and Fern went to Holland

to meet their new families whilst Foster Dogs Flower, Nita

and Kelly went to stay with some of our Dutch Adoption

Team members until they find their new homes.

We have recently found a vet in a town near Rudozem that can spay female dogs.

Misty, Kim, Padme and Tess s have now been spayed

at the Rudozem Branch. Thank you to those that donated to spay them.

Sadly we lost 8 pups this month due to an infection they all came down with. We lost 3 of Queenies pups Emmy Lou, Russop and Tasker. And 5 of Dallys pups, Zorro, Sam, Lotus, Nero and Kiwi. None of the vaccinat-ed pups have been infected. We are desperate for donations towards the vaccinations and microchips as we had a total of 30 dogs vaccinated yesterday by the vet. If anyone can donate please visit the webstore on our website. We are not sure what the infection was but the vet is adamant that it was not parvo. It was possibly brought in by Chase or Nina without them appearing to have it. We do our best to try and eliminate any risks but it is difficult when the whole place needs renovating. We are hoping to build separate runs outside so that younger unvaccinated pups can have a run about while we clean their pens without them actually run-ning about the main yard where the other dogs exercise. We need funds to do this and at the moment we are still trying to raise the money for the extra pens to be built. To lose one pup is heartbreaking, but to lose eight is just devastating. What is so infuriating is knowing that if the municipality didn’t keep opposing everything we do and we had the funds to renovate, those babies might not have died. Please help us by donating towards building materials for the new pens and puppy runs, please go to the donate / help page on our website.

We are grateful to a charity in the UK who gave a donation of dog food to RSDR. Here is RSDR UK’s Julie Lewis’s broth-er Mick (on right) and his friend Martin helping move the food. RSDR are grateful for any donation of food for the dogs. With over 120 dogs at both branches in Rudozem and VT we can go through an estimated amount of 300 kgs a week in dog food alone, with not only feeding the dogs at the branches, but also feeding the many dogs and cats in the streets around Rudozem and Veliko Turnovo.
