Winter Wonderland Party

This year we will be hosting our first Winter Wonderland Party on Thursday 8th December. We hope that this will become a new Maybury Primary School tradition! The party will include lots of fun and games for the children with plenty of dancing and singing along to their favourite music. There will also be the op-portunity for the children to win some prizes! There will be a small cost of £3 per child for this event. There will also be other small items for sale on the night so children may bring some extra money (£2 max.) with them. Children should come dressed in their party clothes.

Inhalers

If you child needs an asthma inhaler please ensure you have completed a medicine administration form which is available from the school office. We can not administer inhalers without consent from parents.

Children in Need

On Friday 18th November we celebrated Children in Need to raise money to help children both in the UK and around the world. We had a brilliant day, the children and staff dressed up in pyjamas and onesies and we had a movie and popcorn afternoon in the hall. The children took part in lots of fun activities at lunch time including face painting and games. We raised £370.40!! Thank you everyone for your support.

Nursery

The children in nursery have learnt about night time, the moon and stars in the sky. They built space rockets and watched footage of a real spaceship launch. The children have also been on an autumn walk and collected leaves, conkers and fir cones. They made observational drawing of their findings.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies had an amazing time on their first school trip to Little Street. The children were extremely well behaved and were great ambassadors for our school. Even the people who run the centre com-mented on how good our children were. Well done Dragonflies!

Thank you to all the Mum’s and Dad’s who have been able to attend our ‘Stay and Play’ sessions on a Monday morning. It is a valuable time where you can come and learn with your child and see what they are learning that week. This then helps you to know how you can support them further at home. Unfor-tunately we cannot have siblings attend these sessions.

Our phonics learning continues and the children are very proud of their ability to hear sounds in words and write them down. At home please encourage your child to use their phonic knowledge to write for a purpose, eg writing a shopping list or writing a message. In maths we have been ordering and writing numbers to 20 and have been adding 2 numbers together.

Thank you to all the parents who attended parents evening last week. Ladybirds The children have settled into Year 1 and are now familiar with the daily routines and expectations. We continue to encourage the children to develop their independence, by hanging their coats and bags on their pegs and changing their reading books by themselves. The children have been learning about their senses as part of their Science topic about ‘Ourselves’. They really enjoyed taking part in all the sense challenges!

In Art, the children had great fun creating their own fireworks pictures when they were learning about Guy Fawkes .

Butterflies The children have been enjoying their History topic and learning all about ‘The Great Fire of London’ this half term and are looking forward to starting their new Science topic ‘Materials’. In Maths, we have been doing lots of work on place value and finding out how many tens and ones in numbers and learning how to add 2-digit numbers together quickly but imagining a 100-square. Mr Allen came into Butterflies so that the children could take part in a music workshop. The children used a range of instruments to create sounds to go with a story about a spooky house. They had lots of fun! Mrs Roberts Key Stage 1 Phase Leader

We were delighted to see so many parents at parents evening this month and to share the fabulous learning that has been taking place.

Beetles Class

Year 3 have been busy preparing for their class assembly on Thursday and are looking forward to sharing what they have been learning with their parents.

They have also been creating their own Canopic Jars out of clay (linked to their topic on the ancient Egyp-tian’s). Beetles class have been learning about the significance of Canopic Jars for the mummification process.

Ants Class

Year 4 have been busy designing and making Ancient Greek inspired clay pots. They are looking forward to painting them later this week. Once they are finished, they will be using these Greek pots as a stimulus for writing a story about a 'Magic Greek Pot' which takes them to the Ancient Greek Olympics. We look forward to reading examples of their cross-curricular writing later this half term.

Spiders Class

Year 5 have been completing an Andy Goldsworthy project. Over the course of the half term they have been learning about the artist and have been emulating his work. As their final project, they collected leaves and petals from home and worked in groups to create a natural sculpture.

Glow Worms Class

On Remembrance Day on 11th November, Year 6 went to show their respects to the soldiers who fought for our country during the wars. They participated in the 2 minute silence and were lucky enough to meet the Major of Woking. The most poignant moment was when they were read a poem by a veteran. This experi-ence will bring more meaning to their World War studies later on in the year.

This month, the learning council has been working hard to organise the Children in Need events for the school.

We created posters about the events and planned the fair that we held at lunchtime. There was face painting, where children could choose between an eye-patch or a Pudsey bear, pin the patch on the Pud-sey, skittles challenge, colouring, nail painting and a penalty shoot out. The learning council helped with the pin the patch on the Pudsey and ran the penalty shoot out stall.

We organised a cake sale for after school and made posters for these too. The sale went very well!

We were very pleased to find that we raised over £150 for Children in Need.

Workshops this half term are below

To assess how useful you find the workshops and the relevance of their content I have created a feedback sheet so please complete this after the workshop to help us improve them further.

Any questions or suggestions for workshops please do not hesitate to let myself or Mrs Hussain know. Thank you for your continued support!

September: Friendship

October: Independence

November: Respect

December: Appreciation

Page 7

Our Values – Autumn Term

Friendship: September's value is friendship, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to have friends and how we can be a good friend.

Play with friends outside school.

Read ‘Harry Potter’ by J.K Rowling, ‘Charlottes Web’ by E.B White or ‘Elmer and Friends’ by David McKee

Independence: October’s value is independence, some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Give children opportunities to be independent e.g. getting dressed independently, learning to tie their shoe laces and ties on they own, organising their school equipment

Forget perfection- Accept that children won’t do the task as well as you. Let them try to do things for themselves e.g. Making their own cereal, if the milk spills, show them how to clean it up with-out criticism and assure them it happens to everyone

Read ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravett or ‘Nelson Mandela, Long walk to free-dom’ by Chris Van Wyk.

Respect: November’s value is respect , some suggestions to encourage this

important value at home are:

Talk about why it is important to show good manners.

Encourage to help with recycling and discuss why we need to respect our en-vironment

Read ‘Little Rabbit Foo Foo ‘by Michael Rosen

Appreciation: December's value is appreciation, some suggestions to encourage this important value at home are:

Talk about people who are important to us and why we appreciate them.

Talk about people less fortunate than ourselves and think about how we could help them.

Read ‘Owl babies’ by Martin Waddell

Maybury Primary School is constantly trying to find ways to raise as much money for school funds to ensure that the children have the best possible experiences and opportunities .

We have signed up for Easy Fundraising, this is a website that gives the school a little bit of commission every time you shop online – you just have to sign up and go to their webpage first before you shop. This is an easy and convenient way to raise money for the school whilst you go about your usual online shopping.

If you are doing the weekly grocery shop, booking flights/holiday or Christmas shopping online, please use this site first. It does not cost anything to join and the money donated comes directly from Easy Fundraising and will not be added to your total bill—in fact there are many discount codes available on the site! All the main stores are listed such as Sainsbury's, Amazon and Argos to name but a few.

Many staff members have signed up and in less than one week we have raised £12.38 for the school!

Go to the school website and use the link :http://www.maybury.surrey.sch.uk/page/default.asp?pid=897

or direct link here: https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/mayburyprimaryschool/

Claire March is a fully qualified swimming instruction and we were lucky enough to have her teach the children earlier in the term. If you are interested in continuing with swim-ming lessons for your child please contact Claire for availability and cost.
