Girls Group dazzle in art competition

LAST MONTH the IMWS Girls Group

concluded their art competition in which

12 girls took part. The competition, which took place over

three Sunday afternoons, saw the girls us-

ing a range of materials and techniques

to create some dazzling pieces of art.

Whereas some decided to work on their

own, some girls decided to work together

in pairs on their painting or drawing.

Pencil, glitter, paint, chalk pastels and

more were all used in inventive and cre-

ative waysThe enthusiasm and creativity shown

by each participant was incredibly high

making for an intense competition.

But, as ever, there can only be one win-

ner.We are very pleased to announce the

winner of the Girls Group Art Competition

is: Tasnim Badat From everyone here at IMWS, congratu-

lations to Tasnim for the incredible draw-

ing of the hand of peace.Well done to all those who took part! WINNER: Tasnim Badat

LAST MONTH IMWS launched a Bereavement fund to support families who have difficulties in pay-ing off funeral costs. Recent-ly the charges for a ceme-tery burial have increased and IMWS are looking at ways to help families who face financial difficulties in paying off these costs.

Bereavement Fund has been launched to help peo-ple who do not have any family or friends to pay for the funeral expenses e.g. if someone passes away and there is no one to pay or his/her funeral cost. In such in-stances IMWS will take care of such expenses from the Bereavement Fund. It will be used strictly on a ‘needs’ basis.

IMWS Burial and Chari-

ty Sub-committees’ Chairs said “We are hoping to help those people who need help. Our aim is to have just enough funds for three to four burial as we antici-pate that most people have friends and family to pay for the funeral cost.” They fur-ther added “this is very wor-thy cause and the Almighty will reward those who will contribute in this ia.”

You can make Lillah con-tributions to this fund and help those who are in need of assistance. You can make your donations by visiting www.imws.org.uk or visit-ing the centre at 28 Track Road, Batley, WF17 7AA. Al-ternatively, you could pass your donation on to one of the IMWS Executive mem-bers.

Neo Nazi white suprema-cist terrorist, Thomas Mair, was handed a life sentence for the brutal murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in June this year.

Speaking outside the Old Bailey after sentencing, Brendan Cox, said in his state-ment: “The killing of Jo, in my view, was a political act and an act of terrorism.”

In sentencing, Justice Wilkie said “There is no doubt it [the murder] was done to further a political motive”, and was in-spired by “white supremacism and exclusive nationalism, which is associated with na-zism in its modern forms”.

Police searches of the white supremacist’s house found a very neatly arranged book-shelf containing books relat-ing to white supremacy and Nazi history. The jury were shown photographs of titles such as SS Race Theory and Mate Selection Guidelines, The Politics of the Holocaust and March of the Titans: A His-

tory of the White Race.On top of the case sat a

small gold coloured orna-ment of a Third Reich eagle with a swastika on it.

A press cutting relating to right wing terrorist, Anders Brevik, who slaughtered

77 in 2011, was also found. An investigation into his

internet searches, both of his personal computer and those he used in pub-lic libraries, revealed he searched for the white su-premacist group, the Klu Klux Klan, leading Nazi fig-ures and a page to answer the question “Is a .22 round deadly enough to kill with one shot to a human’s head?”

In the October preliminary hearing Mair refused to plead and gave his name as “death to traitors, freedom for Britain”. The judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

While attacking Jo, the neo-Nazi terrorist was heard saying “this is for Britain”, “keep Britain independent”, and “Britain first”.

Sue Hemming, head of spe-cial crime and counter-terror-ism at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said after the

sentencing: “motivated by hate, his premeditated crimes were nothing less than acts of terrorism designed to advance his twisted ideology.”

Along with the murder of Jo Cox, Mair has also been found

guilty of inflicting GBH with intent, possession of a firearm and possession of a dagger.

Mair will serve a whole life sentence and was told he will not be let out of prison.

And yet, despite the Judge, CPS, Brendan Cox and even parts of the mainstream media calling the neo Nazi a terror-ist, why wasn’t he tried under counter terrorism legislation?

It goes without saying, was he a Muslim, Mair would al-most definitely have been

convicted of a terrorism of-fence, as opposed to just mur-der which is a common law offence.

Examples of this happening to Muslims are aplenty.

Despite the overwhelming evidence of the threat far right terrorism and extremism poses, it is often brushed under the carpet as actions by mentally ill “loners”. The Royal United Services In-stitute (RUSI) published a report earlier this year in which it concluded 80% “of deaths have been at-tributed to right-wing ex-tremists... or other forms of political extremism, rather than religiously in-

spired terrorism.” Perhaps Mair’s conviction,

and the rise of right wing at-tacks post Brexit and Trump’s electoral victory, the light is finally being shined on a long ignored and burgeoning problem. Only time will tell.

England have been look-ing for an opener to partner Alastair Cook after Andrew Strauss retired from the sport in 2012. Cook has gone through ten different candi-dates since then, and per-haps now, after four years, the wait is finally over.

With a cautious manner and playing with matu-rity well beyond his age, Hameed has been compared to his cricketing idol, Geof-frey Boycott. It may come as no surprise, then, the Bhar-uchi batsman has been nick-named “Baby Boycott”.

Writing in Daily Telegraph, Boycott wrote he is “flat-tered” by the comparison, and believes Hameed is “born for Test match cricket, like [Alastair] Cook”.

However, Boycott has also warned to “not expect too much from him too soon… he will have a few downs as well as plenty of success but none of us are the finished product when we start our international careers”.

Showing that it is possible for Muslims to break that glass ceiling and compete on the international stage, “Baby Boycott” is the fourth Muslim on the England team, following Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Zafar Ansari.

THE STAGE was set with two PS4 games consoles pro-jecting the Camp Nou on ele-vated screen backdrops in wait of competitors challenging to become the IMWS Fifa 17 Champion.

The competition, organised by the IMWS Youth sub-com-mittee with prizes sponsored by Frankies Burgers, saw each of the 19 competitors play three group games. Winners and runner-ups from the group stage progressed to the knock-out part of the tournament, before a tight final brought out the best of gaming skills.

During the Sunday after-noon at the Al-Hikmah Centre last month, the boys aged 11 to 19 had an opportunity to also partake in the activities often used by the IMWS Youth Club, which meets up every Saturday at 5.30pm. These in-cluded table tennis, pool, ta-ble top football and an Xbox and became a fun distraction whilst waiting for their next game.

Back to the action and 16 year old Isma’eel Ahmed made it through to play 14 year-old Muhammed Hasan Mayet in the first semi-final. In the

second semi, 16 year-old Moham-med Dadhiwala was up against 17 year-old Huzaifah Dadhiwala.

Though the matches had their own elements of excitement, Isma’eel Ahmed and Mohammed Dadhiwala made their way through to the final.

After a very well mannered tournament from all the com-petitors, it came down to a closely contested final. Both Isma’eel and Mohammed had their sights on the trophy and went through the standard five-minute plus extra time on a stalemate of one goal each. This inevitably meant a tense and exciting penalty shoot out would decide the victor. After netting his penalty Isma’eel Ahmed became the IMWS Fifa 17 Champion. As well as a glit-tering trophy the winner also received a voucher from tro-phy sponsors Frankies Burgers of Batley.

Chair of the Youth Commit-

tee, Jaffar Daji, said, “Although competitive the atmosphere throughout the day was re-laxed and the games were played with courtesy and sportsmanship.

“It was really wonderful to see the youths taking part in this year’s FIFA 17 gaming tournament, and thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the day a success and also to the participants who attended from across our com-munity.”

The tournament began three years ago and has become a regular slot in the Youth sub-committee’s calendar.

Boycott Divestment and SanctionsIT GOES without saying as to

how horrified we all are when images of death and destruction from Palestine fall before our eyes. We naturally become upset, tears flow and we feel we need to do something to display our anger and frustration.

In 2014 when Israel’s bombing of Gaza left over 2000 people dead, a quarter of whom were children, pro-tests flooded small towns and big cit-ies demanding the governing powers take action to stop this crime. Chants of ‘Free Free Palestine’ and ‘From the Valley to the Sea, Palestine will be Free’ echoed in town centres under the midday sun, with an ocean of supporters flying the red, white, green and black colours.

But it does not take long follow-ing the initial fizz for apathy to take hold.

During those attacks hash-tags became popular on social media to encourage support for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.

Then, a few weeks later, chants turned to questions. “Is the BDS campaign going to achieve any-thing?” And, “If I boycott Coca Cola what difference will it make?”

To understand what BDS is about you have to understand where it began.

The Boycott Divestment and

Sanctions movement isn’t new. It is a global campaign launched by the people of Palestine and has been going since 2005. Its aims are to put economic and political pressure on Israel to end the suf-fering it imposes on Palestinians.

Boycotts are against companies who are supporting Israeli occu-

pation through heavy donations, holding factories in the illegal set-tlements or selling produce from the stolen Palestinian lands.

What is disappointing is al-though Muslim retailers vowed to support BDS during the attacks, even making public announce-ments, since ‘things went quiet’ the boycott merchandise has re-turned in stock, and sadly the flag waving protestors have shopped without raising an eyebrow.

There are some retailers and members of the public who did join the BDS campaign following the horrific sights of 2014 and have remained firm. They deserve to be applauded for taking the stand.

But two years down the track let’s take a reality check on our

own commitment to BDS now rather than when the next hor-rendous act of aggression is launched. How much are we sup-porting it and what more can we do?

Remember, this is what the Pal-estinian people have asked the world to do, as individuals and

as governments. If we support their right to be free we have to support the campaign they began and are ask-ing the world to support.

Why not educate those around us on what the Pales-tinian struggle is.

For this we may need to educate ourselves first. It is facts that we need to learn and not be reliant on unreliable messages circulated on social media. After all corrobo-rated facts support the argument far better than blind passion.

Then share your knowledge and see that there are more good peo-ple than bad who can see the hu-manitarian crisis.

This will then strengthen our own will in support of BDS. We will stop asking what difference ‘I’ as an individual can make and start realising supporting BDS is the right thing to do because of the struggle the Palestinian people face. Even after the cameras have turned away and the images no longer grace the five inch screen in the palm of our hands.

IMWS HAS signed a pledge with Sanctuary Kirklees, for-merly Huddersfield Town of Sanctuary, to look at ways to help refugees coming into the area.

Sanctuary Kirklees is part of City of Sanctuary, a nation-wide network of groups oper-ating at the grassroots level to create “a culture of hospitality and inclusiveness” for refu-gees.

The organisation is looking to expand beyond Hudders-

field and work with groups in north Kirklees to establish “places of welcome”, areas where refugees can be reset-tled in the long term.

In relation to this, an event was held at Dewsbury Town Hall last month organised by Sanctuary Kirklees to encour-age local organisations to sign up to become “a place of welcome” for refugees. Talks were given to explain what community organisations and volunteers can do to help

with the plight of refugees.A Syrian refugee spoke of

his experiences; when he came to the UK and how he was moved across the coun-try seeking asylum. He talked of the abuse he received, such as beer bottles being thrown into his garden. As a result he had to go to the police on a daily basis.

Sanctuary Kirklees’ longer term aim, according to their website, “is to encourage the creation of a network of

towns and villages through-out Kirklees which are proud to be places of safety, and which include people seeking sanctuary fully in the life of their communities.”

Sikh Community Return Masjid to Muslims

A COMMUNITY of Sikhs from a village from the Fatehabad district in Haryana have handed over to the local Muslims a mas-jid which was converted into a gurdwara soon after Partition.

The masjid, which was con-verted into a gurdwara in 1948 has been handed back to the Muslim community, after the Sikh community was made aware of the situation. The issue was put forward to the village who agreed the masjid should be returned.

Dr J Ram, Head of the gurd-wara committee said the strength of the country lies with its unity and diversity, and the community in the village share their happiness and sorrows to-gether.

Partitioning of the sub-con-tinent in 1946 saw one million killed and 15 million people dis-placed from their homes, mak-ing it the largest mass migration in history. As a result, lands, homes and buildings left be-hind were often taken over by those who moved into the area.

Chandh Singh, who is the vil-lage prandh said there are many such masjids in Haryana which have been converted into other places of worship. He appealed people to consider Muslims as their brothers and sisters and return the masjids to them.

An evening of Al-Aqsa beauty IT BECAME an evening of

enlightenment that covered the history and modern day conditions surrounding the third holiest site in Islam - Masjid Al-Aqsa.

Organised by Friends of Al-Aqsa (FOA) and support-ed by IMWS, the event began with a beautiful Quranic rec-itation by Qari Azhar Patel. After which the first key note speaker, Sheikh Abdul Hamid, delivered a memorable unfold-ing of the relevancy of Masjid Al-Aqsa and its surrounding area to all three Abrahamic faiths.

A captivated audience of men, women and chil-dren listened attentively to an education on Mas-jid Al-Aqsa, the Dome of the Rock and the surrounding are-as. Over 350 people attending the gathering were gripped by the talk and developed an eagerness to visit the region and see the sites themselves.

The speeches were broken up by international nasheed artist Omar Esa who per-formed three original nash-eeds. His vocal melody filled the hall of the Al-Hikmah Cen-

tre and the touching words left their mark on the hearts of listeners.

FOA’s Shamiul Joader deliv-ered the second talk which focussed more on the politi-cal struggle of the Palestinian people and the campaigning FOA have been doing for the past 19 years.

As he mentioned conditions

prevailing over Palestinians, like limited access to electric-ity and water, and the way it affects lives, like machines in hospitals and rationing wa-ter supplies, you soon began to understand the gravity of what it is like living under such conditions.

Shamiul spoke of the cam-paigns FOA are presently pro-moting including Hands of Aqsa, Check the Label and Not

in My Fridge, details of which can be found on the FOA web-site.

Not in My fridge is a cam-paign to boycott Coca Cola who have two sites operat-ing in the illegal settlements. This is land grabbed through aggression from Palestinians who hold ancestral links to it. The settlements have been

condemned by gov-ernments around the world but Israel contin-ues to announce more settlements year on year.

The Boycott, Divest-ment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign has been called for by the Palestinian people to help their struggle

against these illegal settle-ments and the occupation.

The evening concluded with a meal and a chance to reflect on both the desire to visit the third holiest site in Islam and to combat the injustice Pal-estinians face through BDS, as once was done for the in-justice black South Africans faced during apartheid.

LAST MONTH South West York-shire Partnership Trust hosted their “Reach out with Faith” seminar, to discuss the role faith plays in treating mental health conditions.

South West Yorkshire Partnership Trust, which provides mental health and disability services across Barnsley, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield, brought together mental health ex-perts and Islamic scholars to discuss the topic.

The seminar was attended by near-ly 90 industry professionals and health experts.

Maulana Ilyas Dalal, Lead Imam at HMP Wakefield prison, spoke on the benefits of spiritual healing. He high-lighted how spiritual illnesses and mental health problems are often confused, that not all jinn possessions are mental health related and vice ver-

sa. The treatment for the two cannot be interchanged. Moreover, “spiritual healers” use this lack of knowledge to con vulnerable people who pay thou-sands in the hope of getting better, though to no avail. Maulana Ilyas did, however, stress this is not the case for every healer.

The keynote speech was given by Consultant Clinical Psychologist and visiting Professor at the University of Karachi, Professor Abdur Rasjid Skinner. Professor Skinner’s talk, wit-tily named “Are Jinns Racist?” was on the element of belief within mental health problems. Whist he is not of the opinion every mental health problem is solely caused by jinns, the belief in spiritual illness cannot be overlooked.

He criticised the NHS’ current “Moscow co-op” method of offering treatment, in that every patient is

given the same few treatments re-gardless of their circumstance. This has been going on for 30 years with little change. He stressed the need for a “culturally appropriate” approach to every patient. In regard to Muslims, the spiritual and medical can come to-gether, that there is no need to choose either one or the other.

A regular theme in the sem-inar was the lack of mental health awareness, the stigma as-sociated with it, the silent suffer-ing and the negative impact this has, and the tendency of many in the south Asian community to immediately source taweez as a cure.

Reiterating what Professor Skinner said earlier, Dr Claudine Van Mechelen, a Physiatrist who has taken part in numerous cul-

tural psychology research projects said there is a need to educate pa-tients as well as carers regarding men-tal health issues. Spiritual and medical treatments can be used together to treat mental health problems.

MORE THAN 100 masjids in the United Kingdom have been targeted in anti-Muslim hate incidents since 2013, according to statistics released by anti-Muslim hate monitoring group, Tell MAMA.

The highest concentration of at-tacks took place after the murder of Lee Rigby on the streets of the capi-tal in 2013.

Criminal damage to masjids, van-dalism and actions involving violent extremism were the three most re-ported catogories. In the latter, the language of the perpetrator indicat-ed rhetoric associated with far right extremist groups.

Speaking about the findings, Fiyaz Mughal, founder of Tell MAMA, stat-ed:

“This shows that anti-Muslim ha-tred is targeted at masjids as visible symbols of Muslim communities in the country and that far right rhet-oric and symbolism is a driver for some of the targeting taking place. MADNI Muslim Girls’ School staff says they are “thrilled” with the school’s latest Ofsted report.

Inspectors gave the school a good rating in all areas following a visit last month.

Under the new Ofsted framework all schools are judged on a common inspection framework, and this inspection represents a progressive step for the school.

All three of its schools (early years, primary and secondary) were graded as good with outstand-ing features.

In a statement, the School’s head teacher said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the result and feel this is a reflection of the combined efforts and dedication of all the staff, parents and children over the last few years.

“At Madni Girls’ School we aspire to motivate, inspire and challenge our students, empower-ing them to achieve their social and academic potential in a safe Islamic environment. We are committed to making rapid progress on the are-as identified for improvement in order to become an outstanding school, and the latest inspection report and feedback from the Inspection team leads us to believe we are already on the way.”

Inspectors praised the students at the school commenting: ‘their behaviour is outstanding; fur-thermore pupils are committed to their learning and value their education. They are self-disci-plined, confident and proud of their school.’ In-spectors added that ‘pupils make good progress from their starting points and that progress is above average in the majority of subjects. GCSE results are improving over the years.’

The school was commended by Ofsted on its Social, moral, Spiritual and cultural provision, stating that the school ensures that pupils are well equipped for life in modern Britain.

The leaders at the school were also praised in the report and described as being ‘enthusias-tic, driven and passionate leaders that have im-proved teaching, learning and assessment since the last inspection…their actions are driving up standards across the school.’ The full Inspection report can be viewed on the Ofsted website.

Madni Muslim Girls School is based in Savile Town, Dewsbury, providing education to children from the ages of 2 to 16. The school comprises an Early Years unit for 2-5 year olds, a primary school and a secondary girls’ school.

Prayer rooms at football stadiums“MUSLIMS praying at half

time at the match yesterday #DISGRACE.” With that tweet, Stephen Dodd unleashed a twitter storm as fellow Liver-pool FC fans branded him a “disgrace” and a “bigot”.

In March 2015 Dodd tweeted a picture of solicitors Asif Bodi and Abubakar Bhula perform-ing their namaz at half time, accompanied by the above caption.

Liverpool FC released a state-ment condemning the tweet as they sought to reassure fans of their commitment “to ensur-ing that the club and Anfield provides a welcoming and safe environment for all fans”.

The story caused a Twitter storm and grabbed headlines. With the increased number of Muslims and fans from oth-er faith groups, the Premier League and Football Associa-tion have said the sport is wel-coming of all.

Since the Liverpool incident, which is not the only case documented, has anything changed?

The club has made a mul-ti-faith room available this

season to accommodate peo-ple of faith. This room is acces-sible from the Main Stand pub-lic realm and located next to the h o s p i t a l -ity ticket c o l l e c t i o n booth.

A few oth-er Premier L e a g u e clubs also provide either prayer rooms for Muslims, or multi-faith rooms.

Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal FC, offers a small prayer room located at block 7, lower tier, and can be identi-fied by the sign that denotes a multi-faith prayer room.

Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium has a fully equipped prayer room, located on level 3.

Aston Villa’s Villa Park Stadi-um also has prayer room facil-ities. On match day, fans who wish to pray at the local masjid will be granted readmission if they leave partway through a

match.The London Stadium, former-

ly known as the Olympic Sta-dium, now home of West Ham FC, has a multi-faith prayer room.

A multi-faith prayer room is also available on match days at Leicester City FC’s King Power Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspurs FC’s new stadium, known currently as the Northumberland De-velopment Project, will have a dedicated faith room. Totten-ham are planning to have the new 61,000 seater stadium, being built on the same site as White Hart Lane, ready for the 2018/19 season.

CCTV’s in Taxis

KIRKLEES Council has launched a con-sultation on a plan to make CCTV systems in taxis licensed by the Council mandatory.

The proposal is a combined authority initiative and coun-cil’s in Leeds, Bradford, Calderdale, Wakefield and York will also be consulting with peo-ple who live in their areas.

It is proposed that taxis will be covered by audio and visual CCTV. The audio ele-ment would only be in operation when the taxi was in use, and that both the driver and the passenger would have the ability to turn it on, so that they could record any situation that they felt warranted it.

Those allowed ac-cess to the encrypted footage include the police, the licensing authority – when the

only way to resolve a complaint is by view-ing footage, and social services, though only when a crime has been reported. Footage can also be downloaded when the subject of a recording asks for a copy under the data protection act.

Any downloads would only cover the period when the inci-dent was reported to have taken place.

As part of the con-sultation the council is also considering

whether to allow ve-hicles with manufac-turer fitted tinted win-dows to be used as licensed private hire or hackney carriage vehicles, as the use of CCTV will negate the reason for banning them in the first place.

Full details of the proposals can be found online at http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/involve/entry.aspx-?id=860

The consultation in Kirklees takes place until 3 February 2017.

Right to daylight confirmed by high courtThe law relating to the right to daylight is more complicated than one would think, bearing in mind there is, in principle, a gen-eral right to lightPerhaps surprisingly to many, a recent case shows that the court can take the right to light as far as preventing land used as a play area from being shaded by a property development. The developer got planning permission to build a three story residential block with a café on the ground floor on a vacant site next to the land. However the development was opposed by local people on the ground that the adjacent land, which was used extensively by children at the local school, would lose substantial sunlight. The developer had already reduced the planned development from four to three storeys and presented evidence that only 10% of the land’s sunlight would be lost. The protestors applied for a judicial review, which was granted on the basis that ev-idence regarding the loss of sunlight pre-sented was based on an incorrect assump-tion regarding the amount of light already obstructed by a wall.

Are your elderly relatives safe against fraudsters?Elderly people are often vulnerable to fraudsters and that is why it is essential to ensure that they have access to proper legal advice. In one case that proves the point, a widow in her 80’s was persuad-ed by a charming conman to transfer her £500,000 home into his name. The fraudster posed as a financial adviser and convinced the widow, who is blind, that her property was being placed in a trust with a view to saving Inheritance Tax. In fact, it was put into his sole name and he used it as security to raise a £300000 mortgage before feeing the country with the money. He was eventually extradited back to Brit-ain and jailed for 10 years. The Court of Appeal dismissed a challenge to his convictions as wholly without merit and ordered him to serve an extra 28 days in prison for wasting judicial time. The Court were made aware that , happily, the widow had received her loss money from the bank that granted the mortgage. There are many who will prey on the elder-ly and vulnerable given the chance, and full restitution is not often the end result. If you are concerned that a vulnerable friend or relative may be taken advantage of by an unscrupulous person, there may be straightforward legal steps that can be taken to protect them.

NO ONE thought it would really happen, and yet it did. First Brexit, then Trump. What happens next? Are the world’s democracies lurching towards the right?

It should be clarified; the rise of the far right isn’t an over-night phenomenon.

Narendra Modi of the BJP won the Indian General Elec-tion in 2014, ousting the longstanding Congress Party, which had dominated Indian politics since 1946. With links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu national-ist organisation known for its intolerance of religious minor-ities, some have accused the BJP of ”flirting with fascism”.

Norbert Hofer of Austria’s na-tionalist and anti-immigration Freedom Party narrowly lost out to Alexander Van der Bel-len, an economics professor and former Green Party leader. Hofer took 49.7% of the vote, losing to der Bellen by a wafer thin 31,000 votes. After a chal-lenge by Hofer, Austria’s con-stitutional court has reordered the election, with the date set for 4th December.

Geert Wilders of the Dutch Party for Freedom has been topping opinion polls, and

in the 2010 election won 24 seats. All eyes will be on the March 2017 elections there.

France will hold presidential elections in April/May of next year. Marine Le Pen of Front National won 27% of the na-tional vote in the regional elections in December 2015, but failed to se-cure one single region (out of 13) in the sec-ond round of voting the fol-lowing week. Nonetheless, with Brexit and Trump’s victory proving, for her and a disaf-fected many others, an anti EU and anti immigration manifes-to can win the popular vote, she hopes to make consider-able gains in the presidential election. Even if she doesn’t win, she could have captured enough of the vote to pull “centre” ground politics to the right, similar to what perhaps the UK has seen with UKIP and the EU referendum.

With Hungary’s Jobbik party, Greece’s Golden Dawn party and the Sweden Democrats also polling strongly, many of Europe’s anti EU, anti immi-

gration and nationalist par-ties could make considerable gains in elections over the next few years.

By capturing traditional is-sues of the left, such as wom-en’s rights and fighting anti Semitism, the far right have re-branded themselves as cham-

pions of the working person who has been ignored by the liberal elite.

The far right would also ar-gue they have “purged” them-selves of extremism and rac-ism, with figures like Marine Le Penn saying publically her father, and some of the party’s members, were wrong to say some of the things they said. As a result, far right parties are making their views palatable to people on the left who oth-erwise would never have giv-en such parties two seconds of their time.

It is important to reiterate,

however, explaining the rise of the far right is multi-facet-ed and lacks one simple ex-planation. The capturing of traditionally left issues and the “purge” of extremism are only two elements, amongst a number of other social and economic factors.

Europe is seeming-ly on the verge of a far right take over in the ballot box-es. Brexit has given impetus to anti-EU parties who now believe it is possible to drag their coun-tries out of the EU

by popular vote. It is possible 2017 may see more referen-dums on membership of the EU, and a few countries leav-ing it. Moreover, Trump’s elec-toral victory has taken this a step further, allowing people like Marine Le Pen to believe she could actually win the French Presidential Election.

Whether or not this will hap-pen is anybody’s guess at this moment. If the main parties in these countries, including the UK, needed a wake up call, the alarm is now ringing, louder than it probably has ever done before.

A UNIVERSITY student from one of India’s top universities has been missing for weeks, following a violent “scuffle” with members of the Akhil Bhara-tiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a nationalist student body with links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a group with a history of terrorist of-fences.

Police have blamed the disappearance on mental conditions, claiming he was “emotionally disturbed”.

Najeeb Ahmad, a first year biotechnology student went missing from the Jawaharlal Nehru Universi-ty’s (JNU) Mahi-Mandvi hostel on 14th October af-ter an alleged “scuffle” with ABVP students the day before. Accounts of the incident differ, though one All India Student’s Association (AISA) activist states, “it all started with a scuffle between two groups of students, but then an entire group of ABVP activists came to avenge it and beat him up.”

Vikrant Kumar, the ABVP activist who was alleged-ly slapped denies Ahmad was attacked. However, this runs contrary to most reports of the incident which claim Ahmad was pounced upon as he left the hostel.

A complaint, “kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine”, was registered with the po-lice.

However, with weeks gone by, police searches have turned up very few leads regarding Ahmad’s whereabouts.

Instead, they have blamed his “emotional condi-tion” for the disappearance. Investigators say Ah-mad was taking anti-depressants, and receiving treatment for insomnia and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). A “police source” is quoted in the Hindustan Times as saying, “after a scuffle with ABVP members, Najeeb reportedly felt depressed and did not sleep a wink that night. He was so upset that he called his mother, crying, telling her that he would leave the hostel soon”.

As a result, the police have suggested he may have left the campus voluntarily.

However, such a statement shows a considerable lack of understanding for mental illness. Feeling “depressed” is not the same as suffering from de-pression, which is a mental illness. Not sleeping “a wink”, on the other hand, is not the same as suffer-ing from insomnia, which is not a mental illness.

The police have also claimed Ahmad’s mother, Fa-tima Naseefi, knew about his condition, a claim she rejects and says the police have made up as they have no idea where her son is.

The ABVP claims it is not the student wing of the ruling BJP, but rather the RSS instead. Nonetheless, both organisations have strong links to the ruling party. In 2015 the ABVP used their influence to pres-sure officials at the University of Hyderabad officials to act against PhD student Rohith Vemula, which some have argued led to his suicide in January of this year.

With allegations and theories aplenty, coupled with the frustrating lack of results by the police, it has been suggested the authorities may be with-holding certain information.

Najeeb Ahmad missing for weeks

PRIME MINISTER of India, Narendra Modi, caused chaos in his coun-try as he announced last month the “500 and 1,000 rupee notes will become worthless pieces of pa-per” overnight.

The surprise televi-sion address and sud-den ban announced on Tuesday 8th November, which Mr Modi insists had to be kept a se-cret, created huge lines at banks and ATM’s as people rushed to de-posit their 500 and 1000 notes, and exchange them for lower values. There are reports some queues were over a kilo-metre long with scuffles breaking out as tensions ran high.

The government says banks have already been given three trillion ru-pees since the move was announced. However, despite caps on how much money can be with-drawn at banks (RS10,000 per day and RS20,000 per week) and ATM’s (RS 4000), both ran dry only days after.

The move is designed to curb the amount of “black money”, illegal cash holdings, reduce corrup-tion and combat tax eva-sion in the country. India’s economy is a cash econo-my, in that nearly 90% of all transactions are made

through the exchange of hard cash. The ban hit the majority of India’s 1.25 bil-lion population hard.

Many of India’s poor do not have a bank account,

meaning they cannot de-posit their money and are now left with unusable notes. As a result some street vendors have com-plained of a lack of cus-tomers, as people do not have the notes to pay for goods and services. Fur-thermore, without formal identification or a bank account, daily wage la-bourers will find it difficult to prove to authorities their hard earned cash is not “black” money.

India does have major problems with tax eva-sion, made far easier in a cash economy where money cannot be so eas-ily traced. A parallel econ-omy of “black money” accounts for 20% of the country’s GDP, amounting to over RS 30 lakh crore

(£385.3bn), being trans-ferred outside of formal banking channels.

From 10th to 18th No-vember, nearly £62.25bn in 500 and 1000 rupee

notes have been de-posited in banks so far, according to the Re-serve Bank of India. This is money the govern-ment can keep track of, in the hope of dramat-ically increasing direct income tax revenues.

Economists are split over the benefits of this move. Vivek Dehejia, Associate Professor of Economics at Carleton

University, Canada, be-lieves the demonetisation will not have a negative medium or long-term im-pact on economic growth. The only people to really lose out are those who hold stockpiles of illicit cash, which are now ren-dered useless, particularly as further note bans have not been ruled out.

Others are not so op-timistic. Kaushik Basu, former Chief Economist for the World Bank and Professor of Economics at Cornell University, argues the collateral damage outweighs the benefits of this sudden flush of the system. In the end, once the new notes will become available, “black money” will again start to be accumulated.

STUDENTS from madressah Taleemudeen have been raising money to distribute toys and gifts to young children and Dewsbury and Pinderfields Hospitals.

The initiative, called “Kids for Kids”, is part of the madressah’s enrichment pro-gramme, to involve students in more community based activities. Madressah Taleemudeen facil-itates enrichment programmes to sit alongside the usual Is-lamic education, with the aim of engaging students within the community.

“Kids for Kids”, and projects like it, serves to take Islamic learning from classrooms and implement them in wider society.

Head Teacher, Moulana Zakir

Daji, said: “It is within the enrich-ment that takes place in Madres-sahs that we stem out and feel this act of generosity will help put a smile on the faces of the young

innocent children in Dewsbury Hospital and Pinderfields Hospi-tal and offer a glimmer of hope and support during this difficult and daunting time when they are

admitted in to Hospital. We also feel it enriches the children who study at Madressah to be able to help support local charities, organisations and institutions

which offer a great service to us all.

“At a time when there is a lot of negativity in the world, it will be a great way to put smiles on little children’s faces, especially with Christmas around the corner which is supposed to be a time of happiness. There is a myth that our community is divided but we aim to dispel that and help build communities together. “

The students visited Dewsbury and Pinderfields Hos-pitals, where they spoke to the young children and distributed the presents.

The Modern Inventor

So you’re in a car happily bobbing along the road going wherever it is you’re going. And then, a bus pulls out in front of you. Suddenly, driving at 30 miles an hour be-comes a luxury of a bygone era, or at least that’s what it feels like anyway, so long as that large cuboid on wheels is in front of you.

So, if you can’t go through the bus, and you can’t go un-der it, how about going over it? No, I’m not talking about a monorail or flying cars. The Chinese are developing something called the Transit Elevated Bus. Think of it as a double decker bus, without the lower deck, creating a sort of tunnel which cars can drive through. Sounds bizarre at first, but could it work?

We have solar panels, and they’re great. The sun shines on them allowing you to charge your phone and use the blender. The problem is, the sun doesn’t tend to come out very often in Britain. Grey cloud and rain greets us more than that great big yellow disk we call the sun. So what if there was a “solar” panel that could also generate electricity through rain?

A team of scientists in China are looking to do just that. When the sun is out, the panel works just like a normal solar panel. These panels, however, are covered by an atom thick layer of graphene which generate electricity once hit. It’ll be a while before this becomes commercially available as they are only 6.5% efficient. But the system does work and could be on your roof in a few years powering your kettle.

Graphene-Coated Solar Panel

Ever been on a bike ride and then realised you don’t have any water left to drink? What if there was an invention that could fill up the bottle for you? Cycle around for an hour and you’ll be left with half a litre of the stuff! This clever contraption, called Fontus, has been designed by an Austrian bloke.

The idea behind it is this; there is a lot of water in the air, what if we could take that water out of the air and store it in a bottle? Well, that’s exactly what Fontus does. Literally, water out of thin air!

The obvious people to use it are moun-tain bikers and other adven-turers, who are at risk of

dehydration when adventuring. But Fontus can also be used by communities who have little access to water in the developing world. There might not be a lot of water around on the surface (i.e. rivers, reservoirs or lakes) but high humidity means there’s a lot of it in the air. With over two billion people in 40 countries where water is not easily found, Fontus could be a game changer.

Fontus

We’ve all been there. It’s a great hot summer’s day, the sun is shin-ing bright and the skies are free of white cloud revealing the bubblegum blue which so often is hidden away. You and so many others are enjoying this rare spectacle in Britain, ice cream in hand. However, that sweet fluffy awesomeness which once sat proudly on the cone, is now liquefying creating mini streams of melted ice cream all over your hand.

Millions are affected by this. Is there no solution?Turns out in a few years time there might be. Research-

ers from the Universities of Dundee and Edinburgh have discovered a protein that will actually stop ice creams melting so fast. They’re expecting the first ice creams containing the protein to hit the market in the next three to five years.

Health PageThe content of this page is for general information. Please consult your doctor for more advice and diagnosis.

Looking after your earsThe ear is the organ that detects sound. It not only receives sound, but also aids in balance and body position. Your ear never stops working, even when you’re asleep!

What is earwax?Earwax is a normal, healthy substance made up of oil and sweat secreted from glands in your outer ear canal, scales from your skin and dust particles. Earwax helps to keep your ears healthy. It is anti-fungal and antibacterial. You do not need to wash, scrape or poke wax out of your ears because the wax, along with the skin, usually falls out without you noticing it.

What causes a wax blockage? In most cases you do not need to clean your ears as your ears are self-cleaning.Occasionally, wax can build up and cause a blockage. A number of things may cause this.

For example, you may find that earwax is a problem if you have narrow ear canals, if you work in a dusty or dirty environ-ment, or if you wear earplugs a lot. If you use a hearing aid, the ear mould may interfere with the natural process of skin and wax moving out of your ear.

This can cause wax to build up in your ear canal. Men are more likely to get wax blockages than women, and older people are more likely to get them than younger people.

Ear care If you look after your ears, you can help to prevent wax blockages forming in the first place. Never poke anything in your ears such as fingers, cotton buds or matches. Try to avoid very dusty, dirty or smoky places as these things can combine with wax to form a blockage.

Should I try to remove a wax blockage myself?IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have a perfo-rated eardrum, are prone to ear infec-tions, have been told to keep your ears dry, or had past surgery or injury to your ears, then consult a doctor before apply-ing any of the treatment options below.

Ear drops The simplest type of eardrop is ordinary olive oil. This can be the same olive oil you cook with; alterna-tively you can buy small bot-tles from your local chemist. This softens the wax, helping it to move out naturally.

Use a dropper to apply the oil more easily. Warm the oil up to NO MORE than body temperature and lie down on one side. Fill your ear with oil and stay in that position for 5-10 minutes. Do not put any cotton wool in your ear, as this will absorb the oil and stop it from working into the wax.

After 5-10 minutes, sit up, holding a tis-sue to your ear to catch the oil as it runs out of your ear. Then, if necessary, do the same thing in the other ear. Olive oil is unlikely to cause any irritation to your ear, but it takes a long time to have an effect on the wax.

You will need to repeat this treat-ment daily for up to two weeks. Alternatively consult your local chemist for advice on other ear drops.

Eardrops (including olive oil) may at first make your ears more blocked up, as the wax softens and expands. However it needs to go through this phase so that it can come out of your ear.

Syringing Most cases of wax can be solved by ear drops alone.

However, if there is a big build-up, the drops may not be enough and you may need to have your ears syringed. If this is the case, then see your local GP who will advise you if you need syringing.

This is usually done by a nurse and it in-volves flushing out the wax with a stream of water. In young children and people with ear problems such as a perforated eardrum, your GP will not syringe the ears as this could damage the ears. Instead, they may refer you to a local ear specialist who will remove the wax with a different method.

What can I do when my ears itch?Do not be tempt-ed to scratch your ears or poke anything in them to stop the itching. If your ears itch then you can buy a product over the counter called Ear Calm Spray.

It is a mild vinegar solution and helps to restore the natural acidity of your ear canal. People often find that if they make lots of wax their ears itch. The Ear Calm Spray will help with this. If this doesn’t work then book an appointment to see your GP for a review.
