FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Caroline Chisholm College,

The students and staff of Caroline Chisholm College are drawn from many parishes and we seek to have good connections with each of these. However, all members of the Caroline Chisholm College community are also strongly connected to the Padre Pio Parish community and are looking forward to the imminent completion of the Padre Pio Church.

On most days, some students from our school presently attend the morning parish mass. We will celebrate all future College Masses in the new church and will have the opportunity to access the church for many other liturgical celebrations because of its proximity to our college. As a community, we would therefore like to make a contribution to the religious symbols that will be present in the new church. To raise funds for our donation, we will hold a Mufti Day next Tuesday, 1 December. The minimum donation for the privilege of wearing appropriate casual clothes is $2.00. However, if you are able to make a larger donation that would be greatly appreciated. Next Sunday is the First Sunday in Advent and the beginning of the new liturgical year. As we begin our preparations for Christmas it is very exciting to consider that some of our celebrations will, hopefully, be held in the new church.

Victor Chang Awards Last Tuesday, Mrs Harris and myself attended this annual ceremony to honour the best Year 11 Science student in each local high school. Congratulations to Vicki Stanojevic who was a deserved recipient of this award. Vicki has achieved First Place in both Chemistry and Physics - and in every other course she studied this year!

Learning in Air-conditioned Comfort! Students and staff at Caroline Chisholm College are very fortunate to have air-conditioning in the learning spaces within the college. This means that effective learning can always occur - even when the outside temperatures are very high as was the case last week. It is therefore most disappointing to note the high number of absences on these recent hot days. The only time students are exposed to the heat is during the travelling time home from school. This would surely be an experience with which all could cope. I look forward to better attendance in the future. Year 12 Formal Last Friday night the graduating Year 12 Class of 2009 celebrated the completion of their time at Caroline Chisholm College at their Formal at Oatlands House. As the photos on pages 4 and 5 show, they all had a wonderful evening and presented themselves in a manner that was a great credit to themselves, their families and our college. We wish all our graduates happiness in their futures and look forward to learning about their plans once they receive their H.S.C. results. Thank you very much to Ms Debbie White for the organisation of the Formal and all that she has done for these students. Texstyle Exhibition Congratulations to Stephanie Ornelas whose work has been selected for this exhibition of the best H.S.C. Textiles and Design works and to Mrs Mills who guided Stephanie and the other Year 12 Textiles students. Stephanie is the first student from Caroline Chisholm College to achieve this honour! Art Express Congratulations to each of the following students whose works have been nominated for inclusion in this exhibition of the best H.S.C. Visual Arts works: Francine Buttigieg, Rosemaree Dinaro, Rachel Heaslip, Caitlin Holmes, Brooke Mackay, Michelle Piccirilli, Rachel Ellis and Christine Looyschelder. This nomination is a clear indication of the outstanding quality of these works and reflects the students’ talents and hard work and the commitment of the Visual Arts teachers: Mrs King, Ms Cusack, Ms Woods and Ms Eyles. Yours sincerely Ms Christine Howe Principal

Student reflection on reports Over the next fortnight students in Years 7 and 8 will be asked to read over their reports and complete a reflection exercise where they consider their progress this year, the advice of their teachers and set learning goals for 2010. These reflections will be included in the student reports that are sent to parents. Please take the time to read through these reflections and goals with your daughter as you work with her to set learning goals for next year. Year 9 will be completing a similar exercise, although they won’t have their formal reports to complete the task. Their evaluations of their progress this year will also be included in their reports.

HSC Assessment HSC courses are now underway and assessment schedules were issued to all students last week. This can also be accessed on the college website. In many subjects the first assessment is this term. Please ensure that you have read through the illness and misadventure procedures for the HSC course. Essentially, if a student is not able to do a task because they are sick, a doctor’s certificate is required and the student must submit this together with the misadventure form to the KLA Leader on the first day of return following the illness.

Essential Secondary Science Assessment (ESSA) Year 8 sat the Essa test this morning. This test is for students who have completed two years of secondary schooling and learning in science. While it is mandatory for all Year 8 students in NSW government schools, it is optional for non government schools.

Completion of the test provides information about student achievements across areas including: • knowledge and understanding in science • skills in planning and conducting investigations • skills in reading, understanding and responding to a

range of scientific texts • skills in critical thinking and problem solving. This feedback is valuable in the evaluation and development of teaching and learning programs. Analysis of the results also assists school planning and can aid the tracking of development of scientific knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes. Reports of student performance in these tests will be available early next year. Further information is available from: www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/712assessments/essa Presentation Day This is on Friday 11th December. Invitations will be sent to parents of year 7, 8, 10 and 11 students over the next week. Year 9 invitations will be slightly later as they only completed their exams last week. A key criteria for this day will be the receipt of a Principal’s Award in both semesters – an achievement that all students can attain through effort and application in each of their subjects. SYDNEY TOWER EXCURSION

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Food Technology and Hospitality Excursion Mrs McKee (Food Technology) Mrs Mills (Hospitality)

On Tuesday 2 November, Mrs McKee’s Year 11 Food Technology class and Mrs Mills’ Year 11 Hospitality class attended an excursion to Sydney Tower to explore various aspects of the Hospitality Industry as well as the sectors of the Australian Food Industry. The day started off at Penrith station, where we all gathered at 7:40 am to catch a train to Town Hall. The atmosphere was surrounded with excitement as we looked forward to our yummy lunch at the ‘all you can eat’ buffet! As we arrived at Sydney Tower; we waited at the base of the tower for our tour guide to introduce us to the organisation. Mrs McKee wasn’t complaining though, as she loved the opportunity it gave her to use her photography skills and take photos of us. The tour started with a visit to the kitchens, wash rooms and store rooms of the Tower. Here we were lucky enough to meet the Head Chef who talked us through the food preparation, ordering, storage and safety procedures used in the kitchen everyday. Both the chef and the tour guides were very knowledgeable in many aspects of the Hospitality industry such as menu planning, types of clientele, pricing and legislation that they must abide by to ensure the health and safety of their staff and clients. This aspect of the tour enabled us to gain an understanding of the importance of teamwork, communication, thorough planning and organisational skills in order to maintain the success of an organisation within the Australian Food Industry, particularly in our current economic climate. After our tour below deck, we finally got to travel to the iconic top of the tower. After what felt like an hour trip with 10 people tightly squeezed in the tiny triangular lifts, we reached our destination of the Observation Deck where we appreciated the amazing view of Sydney – seeing Hyde Park, St Mary’s Cathedral, the SCG and Homebush Olympic Park from a birds-eye view. After some sight seeing 310 metres up, we were then taken to the most ‘important’ part of the day – and that was the all you can eat BUFFET! Overall, the excursion took us out of our comfort zones as many students had never been to Sydney Tower before and we really enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere was fantastic and the food was very tasty with a vast range of different foods, both Australian and multicultural, on offer. On behalf of our classes, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers, Mrs McKee and Mrs Mills for a great day and very enjoyable experience. Charlene Rahme and Tanya Challita

LIBRARY NEWS CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Library news Tiffany London, Charlene Rahme and I had the pleasure of attending the Write a Book in a Day Winners’ Presentation at Westmead Children’s Hospital (unfortunately Georgia Mulock was unable to attend) on Tuesday 18th November. As previously mentioned, the Year 11 team received a High Commendation for their illustrations. John Larkin, the author and guest judge, was a very engaging speaker. “What is the secret ingredient of creativity?” he asked. The answer is bum glue. If you want to be a writer you must put in the hours – sit at your desk, and possibly bang your head on it until an idea bleeds from your eye! He was seriously impressed by the winning entry from PLC Pymble, entitled Cheetah Boy, which he has recommended to his publisher Random House. It was the first time a team had been awarded 20/20. High praise indeed and a very high standard to keep in mind for next year.

The representative from Oncology Children’s Foundation thanked all the participants and it was extremely heartening to hear how the $7135 raised will go towards the support of children with cancer.

There is another reading challenge in place! Once again, the Executive Director’s Reading Challenge offers students the chance to complete the reading of 10 or more (age appropriate) books over the summer break. Details and logs are in the Library or on the Catholic Education website.

Finally, the Library no longer sells second hand textbooks. Instead, people looking to buy or sell textbooks need to go to the Library tab on the school website: the drop-down menu will lead to the second hand book page. Here you register and post your books, or search, according to the instructions. Buyers and sellers deal directly with each other.

Looking forward to seeing students at our last two Book Cafes for the year. Check out the great new books and line up your holiday reading soon! The Library Team Creative Arts News - ArtExpress Nominations We have just been notified that eight of our Visual Art students have had their Bodies of Work nominated for the selection pool for the prestigious annual exhibition of HSC Visual Arts practical submissions. The girls will be notified in early December if their work has been selected for the shows to be held in early 2010. To be nominated for selection, students must have achieved marks at the very top of the A range. Congratulations to the following girls: Francine Buttigieg, Rosemaree Dinaro, Rachel Ellis, Rachel Heaslip, Caitlin Holmes, Christine Looyschelder, Brooke MacKay, Michelle Piccirilli

Visual Arts and Photography Exhibition Opening Night: Tuesday 1st December at 5.30 pm

Our annual Visual Arts exhibition is on next week and we hope that you will come and see your daughter’s work exhibited with the work of her peers in our exhibition. Visual Arts and Photography students from Year 7 to Year 12 will be exhibiting their works. For the students it is the culmination of their work this year and it is important that their work is seen in this more professional context and not just when it makes it home to the fridge door

This year we are fortunate that the exhibition will be officially opened at 6.30pm by Mark Hopkins, from the Parramatta Diocese Catholic Education Office. Mark, as coordinator of

Performing Arts programs has worked with our students extensively this year on the Captivate program and is supporting new initiatives for Visual and Performing Arts in 2010.

The opening night will be on Tuesday, 2nd December at 5.30pm and we would like you and your parents to come and see the amazing work that has been done by Visual Arts and Photography students this year. Highly commended exhibition prizes will be awarded on the evening. So be there and bring family and friends to this celebration of your Visual Arts and Photography students’ talents. The exhibition is open during school hours on Wednesday and Thursday. Students can collect their work on Friday. Mrs Karen King, Leader of Learning - Creative Arts

“Pizzazz” Creative Arts Day On Wednesday 18th November, students from Our Lady of the Way Primary School, St. Joseph’s Primary, St Nicholas of Myra School, Mary MacKillop, Holy Family and Bethany Primary School, attended Creative Arts workshops here at the College. Students from years 4, 5 and 6 were nominated to be in either Drama, Music, Dance or Visual Arts/Photography and Drawing workshop.

Students in the Drama workshop explored the Elements of Drama through a variety of drama games and had a great time creating their own plays based on fairytales with a modern day twist.

Dancers demonstrated their jazz skills in a workshop focusing on Musical Theatre. Students learned about A Chorus Line and showed their ability in the ‘Audition’ dance and then presented their finale dance ‘One’ with top hats and all. Dance students showed enthusiasm and great skill in the workshops and the performance.

Music students focused on beat and rhythms through a variety of activities. This included playing twelve bar blues progression on their choice of instruments, singing small melodies in harmony and the highlight of the day, “Cup Masters”. This included students using a plastic cup to play a syncopated rhythm. This loud and funky performance also incorporated singing a Gospel tune and showcased the students talent and rhythmic ability.

Visual Arts students created an exhibition of “Feral Flora” using a range of drawing, painting and photography skills in imaginative ways. Using different sections of plants and flowers, they enthusiastically developed their own version of a plant with attitude. They also had an opportunity to make a photogram, a form of photographic printing using real plants and flowers, in the College darkroom.

In the afternoon, students presented a Showcase for family and friends from each workshop. The standard was excellent and the performances were highly entertaining. The College would like to thank all students who assisted with the workshops on the day and the following teachers for running the engaging and professional sessions; Mrs Sarah Fernando for the Drama Workshop, Mrs Karen King for Visual Arts, Mrs Brooke Hughes for Dance and Miss C O’Brien for Music with the assistance of Mr Richard Caws. We would also like to thank Ms. Howe and Ms Browning for their support for the day.

We look forward to running the workshops again in 2010 which will be advertised through the local Primary Schools. Mrs Brooke Hughes - Performing Arts Coordinator

PARENT LINE NSW ALL SCHOOLS

ATHLETICS

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

CatholicCare’s Parent Line is a free counselling service for Parents and Carers of children 0 – 18 across NSW 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our professional counsellors talk to parents about a wide range of issues. Adolescent Gaming Culture Gaming is a process that involves playing computer games often with other people over the internet. This is a reasonably newish phenomena and is very popular amongst adolescents. Parents often don’t understand gaming culture and have concerns about the amount of time their children are spending playing on line games as well as the content of the games. Here are some tips on how to handle your child’s gaming interests:

• Education yourself. Recognise that each generation of young people will present to their parents a new issue to deal with. What issues did your parents have to face when they were raising you? Try to understand what they are doing and also what the activity means to them and their peers. Being curious and interested is a positive way. This helps to open up conversations about gaming. Having these conversations can help also build your relationship with your child and enable your child to tell you about their interests. If you can stop yourself from being judgemental and critical about these activities it can really help you to get more information and understand how gaming is impacting on your child.

• Monitor your child. Try to have the computer in a communal living space. Assess how this interest is affecting other parts of their life (school work, relationships with family and friends, sporting activities, interests, hobbies, mood etc).

• Talk to your child if you notice that gaming is impacting on these issues. Tell them what you’ve noticed and what your concerns are. Set some choice of games, discuss bedtimes, homework routines, household chores and help them work in some time for their gaming interests around these other activities)

• Seek help. If you are worried, talk to a professional counsellor or youth worker about your concerns.

Dear Parents/Carers This note is to inform you that there have been incidents of head lice in Year 8 lately. Please be aware that head lice can easily be passed between any children who have contact with each other. It is quite treatable, but treatment needs to be undertaken as soon as you are aware of it. Chemical and manual treatments are both possible. If your daughter has head lice and you are unsure of treatment procedures, you are advised to contact your pharmacist or doctor. NSW Health has recently conducted a research project to find out more about head lice and effective ways of treating infestations. As a result, advice from NSW Health to parents and school staff has changed significantly. Results of research show that: · about 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time · anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is · head lice move from one person's head to another via hair · head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head · head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet · head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments · daily combing of hair using a fine tooth comb and conditioner is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits) Advice for schools: Advice from NSW Health indicates that there is no need for students to be sent home or excluded from school because of head lice. Where one student has head lice this serves as a warning light that there is likely to be an infestation in either specific classes or across the whole school population, including staff. More information can be found at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/environment/headlice/index.asp
