Inside the Gate

Dear Parents and Carers,

The return to normal school life. Thank goodness!

I am very pleased with the way staff and students have returned to normal school timetable routines. Classes have resumed without fuss and teachers have spent the last 3 weeks ensuring students have understood work they completed during the “learn from home” phase. I am grateful that we had become a BYOD (Bring your own Device) school well before we had heard of the Covid19 virus. The students were familiar with the E-learn platform and parents quickly also learned how to access the site. The challenge now is to continue to use our new found expertise to help our students learn.

There have been many positives coming from this latest challenge. Our students have spent much more time actually reading. Many students have reported that they have been cooped up at home and have turned to books for pleasure and learning. We have all had to learn to be more creative to entertain ourselves. Most importantly, we have learned the value of human contact and socialising with our families and friends. The school community continues to follow hygiene practices and we are washing our hands, using sanitiser and social distancing where possible. We continue to have reduced numbers of active cases of the virus and the State Premier is relaxing restrictions on movement and association accordingly.

Remember: If your child has flu like symptoms - sore throat, cough, fever or runny nose, please keep them at home and seek

medical advice. Please let the school know the outcome.

We will likely need to maintain this discipline until a vaccine is available and widely used.

Assessment

The College is moving to the assessment phase of the semester. Recently, students took home a letter explaining how assessment and reporting will operate at the conclusion of Semester 1.

Year 7-11 will be largely unaffected and reporting will be based on Term 1 results, the learn at home period and work completed during weeks 5-10 this Term. Reports will be issued early in Term 3.

Year 12 students will be issued with a report along with all other students early in Term 3. Not every subject will have completed assessment so there may be a blank in the achievement column for these subjects. This will be one subject for most students and two subjects for some students. Year 12 Reports will be reissued in Week 7 of Term 3 fully completed. In this way students and parents will have the maximum information about their child’s progress at the earliest possible time.

Please note that students can access their assessment schedule by visiting the school website.

https://burnettsc.eq.edu.au.

Scroll to the bottom of the page. See the Quick Links list and click on School Calendar (SOBS: School Online Booking System). The assessment schedule calendar will appear. Year levels are colour coded so students can easily see their assessments coming up.

Year 7 assessments are blue, Year 8 are pink and so on. This is the critical step. Students need to look ahead and plan their study routines to meet these coming assessments. A routine and a study plan at home is also vital to success. In high school where there a six or more subjects with multiple assessments, planning is a key to success.

Student Code of Conduct

Education Queensland is reviewing the Code of Student Conduct across the State Education System. The new Student Code of Conduct will replace the existing Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students. The College has written the first draft of the Student Code of Conduct 2021 and this will be presented to the P+C and wider staff and community for feedback in Term 3.

The North Burnett welcomes Mr Sam Wrangle, our new District Relief Teacher. Sam will service the following schools - Burnett State College, Biggenden State School, Gayndah State School, Mundubbera State School, Eidsvold State School, Binjour State School and Boynewood State School. Sam is a keen young Teacher and will be a valuable addition to our cluster.

I am excited about the future and look forward to seeing the student results early in Term 3.

A special thank you must go to all the folks at home who helped with the learning, especially in the first half of the Term.

After our initial use of eLearn and email (which is ongoing), all students now have an extra method of communication. As a class and individually, students been speaking to Ms Conroy during lessons via Skype. The current discussions centre on their script, costume and props and, ultimately the upcoming performance.

All classes have entered the workshopping / rehearsal phase and will be busy collecting/creating costumes and props – see task sheets for particulars.

Below are summaries of each class’s activities, but overall, it has to be said, that clearly, the Dramatic Arts are alive and well at BSC!

On with the show! Ms Conroy

Drama,

Drama, Drama

To start, I would like to congratulate all students on the way in which they have worked over the Term to progress in Drama. It certainly was a new way of communicating, but on the whole, quite productive for most. A great deal of creativity and resilience has been displayed.

Well done to all!

Class: 7B Drama

The unit for this Term is called “Telling Tales”. Students take on the classic role of a story-teller and bring to their audience a myth from ancient times.

To do this they chose a myth, put it into their own words and are currently working towards their performance in Week 9. The emphasis in their performance should be on creating an engaging retelling using the elements of drama + face, voice, gesture, body language etc.

Students are expected to perform in costume – either the traditional flowing, slightly bohemian style or they can choose to reflect the culture from which the myth originates eg. Pandora’s Box is from Ancient Greece, so the student might wear a toga-like costume. A simple prop or two will also add to the performance.

Please see below for significant dates.

It should be noted that the performance, while delivered live, may need to be videoed for marking purposes. If this is an issue – please contact the school well in advance of the 18-06-2020 and alternate arrangements will be made.

A big thankyou goes out to Miss Rohayem who has stepped in over the last few Wednesdays and given the Year 7s a well-earned “practical” lesson. Drama is a movement oriented subject and it’s been so good to observe them “up and doing”.

Students have worked well under unusual (to say the least!) circumstances and have shown a deal of resilience. I look forward to seeing the performances.

Significant dates:

12-06-2020: Check date - script completed + costume + prop/s to be sighted, Provisional Level allocated

17-06-2020: Dress rehearsal - costume to be worn & props to be used, PL updated if necessary.

19-06-2020: Live performances start, but recorded for Ms Conroy.

All to be ready to perform on 19th, but the following Wednesday/Friday (Week 10) may also be needed.

Class: 8B Drama

The unit for this Term is called “Conversation with a Character”. Students have created an interesting character and written a script of a TV interview with that character/person. The character must be human.

They then take on the role and, as that person, take part in a simulated TV interview. They do work with a partner as the interviewer, but this student will not be assessed, only the student playing the character/person being interviewed.

The majority of students have completed their script, received feedback via eLearn and Skype and are currently working towards their performance in Week 9. The emphasis in their performance should be on creating an engaging interview scenario using the elements of drama + face, voice, gesture, body language etc.

Students are expected to perform in costume. A simple prop or two will also add to the performance. Please see below for significant dates. It should be noted that the performance, while delivered live, may need to be videoed for marking purposes. If this is an issue – please contact the school well in advance of the 18-06-2020 and alternate arrangements will be made.

I am very much looking forward to these performances as the students have dealt well with the unusual

circumstances we have found ourselves in.

Significant dates: 11-06-2020: Checkdate - script in hard copy, costume + prop/s all to be sighted; Provisional Level allocated 16-06-2020: Dress rehearsal - costume to be worn & props to be used; PL updated if necessary. 18-06-2020: Live performances start, but recorded for Ms Conroy. All to be ready to perform on 18th, but the following Tuesday/Thursday (Week 10) may also be needed.

Class: 9-10 Drama This class is a true delight to work with! Currently, they are working very hard on the current unit, “The Masks we Wear”. Essentially, it is an exploration of the way in which people take on different masks; often as a reflection of different situations. Students have created a character, written a script and will present this as a monologue. Part of the monologue is the expectation they should be in costume as the character and use, as a prop, a mask they will create. The blank mask was distributed to students on 08-06-2020 along with hints and guidelines as to its production and use. It should be noted that the performance, while delivered live, may need to be videoed for marking purposes. Please see significant dates below. All students have worked very hard on this, and should be proud of themselves. I look forward to seeing the end result of their efforts.

Significant dates: 11/12-06-2020: Mask design sighted and approved by Ms Conroy. Do not start producing actual mask until you have staff approval 15-06-2020: Checkdate for full script (including stage directions) and sighting of costume. Upload complete script to eLearn + have a hard copy present in class 17-06-2020: Masks - completed and present at school for sighting by staff. 18-06-2020: Performances begin - random selection of order. Submission package due. Live performances start, but recorded for Ms Conroy. All to be ready to perform on 18th, but the following Wednesday/Thursday (Week 10) may also be needed

From the Art Department

Year 7A Visual Art – Identities It is a pleasure to experience such a wonderful group of enthusiastic young artists, eager to engage in the creative process of mask making, representing the concept of “Identities”. To begin the process the students applied Pablo Picasso’s ideas of presenting a person’s emotional state through an abstracted face, by applying hot and cool colours and a variety of lines and shapes. Students have since found personal inspiration from nature, the landscape, planets, animals, cartoon characters and more to create their masks.

Year 8A Visual Art – Australiana It has been exciting to see students utilise formal observational skills clearly evident in their drawing of Australian plants. Students are preparing to use their drawing and watercolour skills, by applying them to mono-printing techniques for their resolved artwork. The drawing results speak for themselves.

Year 9/10 Visual Art – Pop Art Year 9 and 10 students are taking their skateboard painting very seriously. They are maturely and confidently

applying effective design processes and thinking creatively outside of the box. Their artwork is starting to

shine and the skateboards have been a great success.

Year 11 VAP Wearable Wonders Talented Year 11 VAP students have been developing problem solving skills, thinking creatively and focusing on the design process. As well as applying the concept of “How humans

impact on the Ocean”.

What’s Cooking@BSC Year 12 Hospitality Practices hosted their inaugural function for Café Four6Two5 last week. They planned, costed, prepared, cooked and served a two course menu consisting of Beef Bourguingnon, Roasted Vegetable Quiche with Tropical Mille-Feuille and Crème Caramels for dessert. They also served a variety of Coffees, Tea and Hot Chocolate.

I was extremely impressed with the work ethic displayed on the day and the professionalism of all students involved in both the café space and the kitchen. Students were assessed on a variety of skills from greeting and seating, plating and serving, clearing and packing down the spaces. Well done to you all.

Year 11 Hospitality Practices have this week, delivered their dishes for Café Caffeine Corruption. They had planned the menu, trialled various recipes, evaluated each dish and completed a full costing of the service. They then worked collegially to prepare, cook and serve a take-away style menu of Soups, Salads and Sandwiches. The menu consisted of Pumpkin Soup, Fireside Chicken Soup, Chicken Caesar Salad, Roasted Vegetable Salad, Tandoori Chicken Wraps and Aussie Steak Sandwiches.

The senior hospitality students and I really appreciate staff from all faculties joining in and being our guests at these café experiences.

Next Term, senior students will continue gaining skills in café service each Monday and Tuesday from Week 2 through to Week 9 at morning tea. They will be preparing, making and serving hot chocolates and muffins/slices or cakes. All students will be offered the opportunity to purchase a hot Chocolate and a muffin/cake from the Café Cart in B6 during morning tea. Hot chocolate and a cake will be $5.

Junior Students in Home Ec are busy winding up their units of work this term. I am truly amazed at how well remote learning was tackled in the first half of the term and the majority of classes and their families were very engaged in the cooking tasks assigned to be completed at home. Thank you to the Mums, Dads, Grandparents and other significant adults who helped our kids complete these learning tasks. I had lots of photos sent to me displaying the fantastic results of home-cooking. I loved seeing the smiles on faces as well as the great looking food.
