Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, This week the College celebrated its Edmund Rice Mass. This is a very significant event in the College’s calendar. As a community we acknowledge our origin and that of the Christian Brothers. Edmund Rice established the Christian Brothers in Ireland over 200 years ago to work with young people. Today, we at St Patrick’s College are part of a bigger group of Edmund Rice Schools within Queensland, Australia and even internationally. Knowing that we do form part of a bigger enterprise is both reassuring and encouraging. During the difficult times in Term 1 St Patrick’s College was continuously supported by other Edmund Rice Schools and Edmund Rice personnel. Their support and encouragement assisted greatly in ensuring that St Patrick’s College was able to continue during a very difficult time. Our liturgy on Wednesday celebrated our partnership as part of Edmund Rice Education and reminded all of us of the importance of what we do at St Patrick’s College both in and out of the classroom. This weekend marks the official start of the AIC and CIC Trimester 2 seasons. At the Spirit Assembly on Tuesday, I reminded all about the need to compete to the best of our ability but also to compete in a fair and sporting way. We need to give our best but it is equally important that we conduct ourselves on and off the field in a way that promotes positive sportsmanship at all times. Spectators, too, have obligations. Both CIC and AIC competitions have a Code of Conduct for Spectators. We are required to support our teams in a positive and encouraging way and ensure that no negative cheering or abuse of officials or the opposition occurs. I ask all within the St Patrick’s College community to ensure that we adhere to these guidelines. As a new season begins it also means the appointment of the various captains of the activities. It is my pleasure to announce the Captains of Sports for Trimester 2. Captain of Chess - Eric Secondes Captain of Soccer - Liam Kelly Captain of Rugby - Ryan Hill I congratulate these young men and am very confident that they will lead their activities with distinction. Student Leadership is part of daily life at St Patrick’s College. Each year a group of young men are selected to fill formal leadership positions as either House or College Leaders. At the end of Term 1 there is the opportunity for Year 12 students to be appointed as House Leaders if they have displayed outstanding leadership during Term 1. In 2010 I have much pleasure in announcing that Lachlan Elliott has been appointed to a House Leader position for Kennedy House. Lachlan was presented with his House Leader’s Badge at the Edmund Rice Liturgy on Wednesday. Well done, Lachlan! The year is progressing very rapidly as we are now into the month of May. I refer all families to the College calendar and weekly editions of the Calling for details of the range of activities coming up. I would, however, draw people’s attention to the NAPLAN Tests which will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. These are very important days for the students in Years 5, 7 and 9 and I ask all within the community to keep these students in our thoughts and prayers during this important time for them. Also over the next few weeks there are camps and retreats for students in Years 7, 9, 10 and 12. These activities are a valuable component of the holistic curriculum that is offered at St Patrick’s College. I thank the staff and parents who are involved with these events. Finally this week I encourage all families to take some time to sit down and talk, and to share some stories of your day with each other. In the busy day to day lives that families live these days we sometimes neglect to take time to spend as a family—I encourage all of us to make time . STUDIES

Chris Carlill Report cards and results: understanding your performance and improving results. By now you have information regarding how well you performed academically in Term 1. I am sure that your parents will still love you if your results are not those for which you or they had hoped. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement and this week I will suggest some tips and strategies to keep you improving your results. General Tips

Review all of your work, examinations and assignments, to determine the criteria or skills areas in which you are underperforming.

Identify your weak points. Did your grades suffer because of careless grammar or poor writing habits? If so, be more disciplined with grammar, punctuation and spelling in all assessment.

Ask your teacher what you could have done differently.

Teachers are very good at providing feedback and can direct you to additional resources that are topic-specific.

How will you be assessed? Ask the teacher to explain the format of the test. If it is an essay examination or a multiple choice test, then target your study accordingly.

Join a study group. Discuss the assessment with other students. They may have notes that you missed or they may have better insight into understanding assignments or how to answer test questions.

Improve memory skills. There are many techniques to improve your memory. Find one that is

best for you and the material you're studying.

Get serious. Don't be late to class. Get some sleep. Eat well. Turn off the television. Get off social networking sites. Stop messaging until the early hours of the morning. Stop procrastinating. Don’t lie to your parents and teachers about your workload or the stress that you may be feeling.

Talk to your Parents If you know a poor result is coming, then talk to your parents first. Let them know that you are aware of the reasons and that you aim to make a change and improve your performance. Get them involved. You may want to discuss creating a homework contract with your parents. The contract should address time commitments, homework help, supplies, and other issues that affect grades. Looking Toward the Future When you have received your final report card for the year and you're looking forward to improving your performance next year, there are plenty of things you can do.

Get organized. Keep a journal of assignments to identify strengths and weaknesses. Organize your supplies and establish a good study space. Try to use colour-coded stationery supplies to stay organized. Identify your personal learning style. This is critical to improving your study habits. Don't waste valuable study time using ineffective study methods.

Review your schedule.

Cut out extracurricular activities that don't help you reach your true goals. If you're working too much at a part-time job, or you’re involved with that team or club just for fun, then you may need to make some tough decisions.

Improve your writing skills. Students sometimes complain because they are penalised for poor writing in subjects other than English. Teachers don't have much patience with this complaint! Good writing skills are critical in every subject.

Keep a Realistic Perspective If you are stressing out about a possible B grade, you should know that perfect grades aren't everything, and expecting them isn't very realistic either. If you have tried everything, but you just can't become the perfect student you want to be, perhaps you should give yourself a break. Identify your own strong points and make the best of them. Good luck with your report. It has been a challenging and rewarding year so far and I hope that 2010 continues to bring new ideas and experiences from which we will all learn and grow. COLLEGE DEAN

David Gardiner Wet Weather Arrangements – On occasions such as Tuesday this week training for sport can be cancelled due to the weather. This can create concerns particularly for our younger students with regard to transport arrangements. It would help if parents could make alternative plans with their son in case of training being cancelled. If the weather forecast is not looking good on the morning of a training day it would help the young men if they knew what to do in case training was cancelled that day.

Parent Lounge –All families were sent a letter late in Term 1 outlining procedures for logging onto the new Parent Lounge on the College website. Passwords were also included in that letter. If you did not receive the letter or are having problems logging onto Parent Lounge please contact me (3631 9063 or [email protected] or [email protected] NAPLAN – All our Year 5, 7 and 9 students will be sitting the NAPLAN tests next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. To help prepare them for these important

days and to promote a strong sense of team and community, we plan to provide all Year 5, 7 and 9 students with a free breakfast on these days. It will be served from the Callan Centre kitchen. We would appreciate any help from parents on these mornings to prepare and serve the breakfasts. If you can help on any of these mornings please contact Mrs Julie Parker on 3631 9057.

STUDENTS

It has been a very positive start to the new term. Students have been quick to settle back into work and College routine after a well deserved break. It is important that we maintain this standard for the remainder of the term. Saturday Sport: I wish to remind all students in Years 8-12 that they must wear the College uniform when travelling to and from the various sporting grounds. If students are supporting other teams throughout the day they must be in full school uniform. Students who are not wearing the College uniform will be asked to leave. It is important that parents assist us in this matter. Bank of Queensland ATM: The College will be trialling a Bank of Queensland Automatic Teller Machine within the school grounds. This initiative has come about due to a large number of requests from students to access the Newsagent to withdraw money for lunch from the EFTPOS machine. Students who are

holders of a Bank of Qld card will have free transactions. Other cardholders will be charged the normal $2 fee. To counter this issue, the Bank of Queensland will be at St Patrick’s on Thursday, 13 May, from 9am to 12 noon so that parents can open an account for their son. A letter will be given to all students with more information. Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. Boys who catch the train to and from school are reminded that they are not to break their journey. If they are changing trains at Northgate Station they must catch the first available train to their destination. Students must not wait around on the platform for friends and then catch the late train as this often delays their arrival to school.

Inter-House Cross Country – May I congratulate the students on a very positive day on Wednesday for the Annual Inter-House Cross Country Carnival. The attendance was even better than on a normal school day, and the uniform and participation were also excellent. The Year 12s really took great responsibility in organizing and encouraging the younger students, and set the best example by making a sincere effort in their own race. Pastoral Information Evening: The College will hold an information evening on Wednesday. 19 May. The topics of the evening will include Drugs and Alcohol and Cyber Safety and Awareness. Photos: Tutor Group and Individual Family Photos will be taken on Friday 28 May. Order envelopes being sent home today. Family photo order forms available at the Student Office. Full school uniform required including tie.

IDENTITY & MINISTRY

Yesterday, May 5, was the Feast Day of the Founder of the Christian Brothers, Blessed Edmund Rice. At St Patrick’s, we talk much about this man who was devoted to his family, his faith and his vocation. As a College community, yesterday we pledged to continue to be inspired by Edmund, by reciting the following, the Creed of Edmund’s People:

We believe the God fire burning in our hearts can transform both ourselves and our world. We believe we are called by God to a deep personal relationship with Jesus, the lover of all creation as brother and sister.

We believe we are called to be good news people. We believe we are called to be stewards of creation.

We believe we are called to keep our hearts and minds open and attentive to God’s will. We believe we are called to witness by prophetic action to our option to the poor, the oppressed, and the people at the margins.

We believe we are called to immerse ourselves in the culture in which we live and work. We believe in community which is prayerful, inclusive and welcoming.

We believe our international brotherhood and sisterhood is a witness to a search for global unity. We believe it is in our fragility that we can accompany others in theirs.

We believe in sharing Eucharist and reconciliation that we are drawn beyond ourselves to the mystery of God. We believe others share the charism of Edmund, and are one with us in living it out.

We hear the call to live justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with our God.

Wishing you all the best as you join us in achieving these aims as the year progresses.

Autism and Asperger Workshop Current Understanding and Practice in Autism and Asperger Syndrome Across the Lifespan with Professor Rita Jordan. This workshop is set for 26 May in Brisbane. More information is available at: www.compassaustralia.com.au Parent/Student Workshop presented by DRUG ARM - 18 May VENUE: Parish Centre, St Joseph’s School, Eldordo Street, BRACKENRIDGE- 6.30 pm $10 child $18 (Connect Members) $25 Non-member This workshop will take the format of a combined session with both students and their parents/caregivers involving a slide show and brief discussion of substance abuse issues. We will then split up into separate information sessions for parents and students involving discussion, questionnaires, group brainstorming

activities and, in the case of the parent group, a more in-depth slide show presentation. Finally, we will conclude by having a combined session in which parents and students share their perspectives and findings from the individual sessions. The purpose of the workshop is to promote dialogue and create a common vocabulary between parents and students when discussing alcohol and other drug issues. The workshop aims to provide information to both parents and students regarding the reality of substance misuse, and to dispel myths that surround many drug issues. Most importantly, the workshop provides a framework for community involvement in substance abuse issues, and improves community attitudes regarding these matters. This workshop is aimed at boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 15. ACTIVITIES

DIRECTOR OF SPORT—LUKE DONATINI With the commencement of the AIC Rugby and Football fixtures this weekend (and Round 2 of CIC), now is an ideal time to reinforce a few points regarding spectator behaviour and the positive supporting of our players in both codes of football.

1. All spectators and supporters are asked to stay back behind the fenced/roped off areas with only officials and players inside the designated playing area.

2. Parents and spectators are reminded to support the players in a positive manner and applaud good sportsmanship appropriately.

3. The use of poor language,

negative remarks/comments to players, coaches, officials or other spectators is frowned upon and will not be tolerated.

4. Parents and spectators are NOT TO COACH from the side lines. The players are asked to listen to their team coach during the game and at the half time break. All parents and spectators are asked to respect this request and leave the coaching to the designated coach or coaches.

5. No parent or spectator will enter the field of play at half time (half time talk) unless asked by an official or a designated team coach.

6. All AIC sporting venues are non smoking and alcohol free venues. Smoking and drinking of alcohol at these venues is prohibited.

Congratulations

Owen Jones (Year 6) – selected into the Metropolitan North Under 11 Rugby League Team. Owen will compete at the Queensland Schools Under 11 Rugby League Championships in July. Wade Richards (Year 9) - competed in the Australian Age Swimming Championships in Sydney over the Easter break and came home with a Bronze Medal.

Correction to College Athletic Record

After representation by the athlete and his parents, a serious investigative check was made through Queensland Secondary Schools Championships School Sport Track and Field Records. Thanks to the assistance of College teacher and coach, Mr Steve Tilyard, it is confirmed that the College record for U.16 400m was broken and is now held by Patrick Killalea, who ran 49.15 secs at the Commonwealth Bank Queensland Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships on 22 October, 2007, competing for Metropolitan North under his SPC coach, Mr Steve Tilyard. Our apologies are offered to Patrick who will go into the College Record Book, once more, in 2010.

The boys argued the negative of “That we should support the Rudd government’s internet filter.” This was a secret topic and both teams were given only one hour to prepare their case without benefit of support from coaches or internet. I would like to again emphasise the necessity of all teams keeping well informed of current affairs by reading newspapers such as The Australian each day, and watching the news and 7.30 Report on ABC as well as SBS and listening to Radio National on 792AM radio, particularly in the mornings. This is absolutely vital in their preparation for the Secret Topic debates. Round Three will begin next Wednesday on 12 May as indicated in the following table. Teams should arrive 75minutes prior to a secret topic debate to receive instructions and the topic from the QDU coordinator.

... is for the million things she gave me,

... means only that she's growing old,

... is for the tears she shed to save me,

... is for her heart of purest gold;

... is for her eyes, with love-light shining, ... means right, and right she'll always be.

Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"

A word that means the world to me. --Howard Johnson (c. 1915

Bible says about Mothers... John 19:26-27 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Sport Support Group Thank you all for your enormous effort over the Labour Day long weekend. Also a very special thank you to all of our group who gave extra time to ensure that we provided a very good and appreciated service at the Callan Centre on both Saturday and Sunday for the Volleyball. I know that some of you dragged in extra friends who are not part of our group and I would appreciate your passing on to those extra volunteers at Curlew my heartfelt thanks for their efforts. Whilst I do not want to take away Anne's final tally, I understand, unofficially, over the weekend we made just over $4000 in profit which Anne will bank tomorrow so as you can see, your efforts are well worthwhile. Even though the Rugby season has not officially started (still trial games), just from the Downlands game and last weekend, we have made over $7,500 so this alone compensates for our $7000 outlay on the aluminium benches that you see around Curlew. Well done, all! CIC is at home this weekend. I am sure that I will see some of you next Saturday at Curlew Park when we are going to operate a canteen for CIC. Our next meeting is on Monday, 10 May, 2010, at 6-30pm in the College Board Room. Cameron Herpich [[email protected]] Chairman SSG

P & F NEWS

We have just two reminders for this week. The first is the Parent (Pastoral) Information Night being hosted by the P&F on Wednesday, 19 May, in the Callan Centre from 7pm. This information evening will take the place of the P&F meeting. I would like to thank Mr Torrisi for arranging this presentation by the Queensland Police which will include topics such as Drugs and Alcohol, Cyber Safety and Awareness and “Party Safe” roles and responsibilities. I look forward to seeing you there. Our second reminder is to send in your money for the Entertainment Books. If you do not wish to purchase the book, please return it to the College office in the original envelope. This helps identify who has returned books or purchased. If you have any questions about the Entertainment Book please contact Lesley Palmer on 042 524 991. This is the first fundraising project for the P&F this year and we thank you for your support. Did You Know??? That there is a group called the Chairs of Support? The group consists of the College Principal, the Principal’s Assistant and Presidents of the College Support Groups, that is, Curlew Park Association, Old Boys Association, P&F and Sports Support. This group meets approximately three times a year to discuss what has happened for each of the groups and any future planning. It is also an opportunity for the groups to discuss any areas that may overlap with other groups’ roles as well for as an exchange of ideas. The most visible aspect of this group and some additional volunteers from our community is their role as the organizing committee for the St Patrick’s Dinner Dance “Shindig”. This year the committee consisted of Dr Michael Carroll, Mrs Jan Thompson, Peter Tyrell (Curlew Park Assoc), Terry Chapman (Old Boys), Diane Hamill (P&F), Cameron Herpich (Sports Support) and Michelle McKeering (parent volunteer) and this group met 4-5 times to co ordinate the dinner dance. The committee met two weeks ago for the wrap up of the 2010 Shindig which has turned out to be our best year to date. The profit for the evening was $6,483.25 with $2,852.00 being proceeds from the raffle. As was previously advised, all proceeds from the raffle go to groups that have supported the college in recent times. These groups are the Royal Children’s Hospital and Boys Town Helpline. Dr Carroll is arranging for a special presentation of our donations at a College assembly. More information will be advised as available. Out of the remaining proceeds, it was agreed to purchase new barbeques to be used at the College for events such as Open Day, House Barbeques, Showcase and Shore to Gate. A donation of $3000 will also be given to the Old Boys in recognition of their support in the past and for their hard work manning the bar at all our dinner dances. Proceeds will go to purchasing Old Boys caps for the graduating seniors and the medals that will be presented at the Back to Shorncliffe Day at Curlew on 12 June. This will also enable the Old Boys to become established as a strong group in our community and to truly become a Band of Brothers. There is also $16,794.05 held over from previous functions and possible projects for this money include a luggage trailer for touring groups, new water coolers after the completion of the current building project and display cases for College memorabilia in the Jack Stevens Room, with a possible long term project being the upgrade of the canteen in the Callan Centre, so it is more suited to the functions that are held there. We will keep you updated as information becomes available. Diane Hamill President H: 3205 5180 (after 6pm) Mob: 0413 130 863
