LOCALLY-MADE STEEL FILM BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN AT THE SHOWROOM CINEMA In 1942 as the Second World War raged and Sheffi eld’s steel industry became more important than ever, a fi lm was made in Sheffi eld to bolster the war effort. It tells the cautionary tale of Walter (Wilfrid Lawson), an ordinary steelworker who rises through to ranks to become a manager, unleashing his tyrannical side. The story plays out against the backdrop of the city’s steel industry, capturing the processes and the atmosphere of the time on celluloid. The fi lm is based on the novel 'Steel Saraband' by Rotherham author Roger Dataller (a pseudonym for Arthur Eaglestone). It was aired on television in the 1980s, but the screening at the Showroom Cinema on Sunday 14 July, 6pm is a very rare opportunity to see the fi lm. The screening coincides with the University of Sheffi eld’s Yorkshire Voices exhibition, which features the work of Arthur Eaglestone. Two experts from the University, Dr Jane Hodson and Hugh Escott will lead a discussion session after the fi lm.Tickets are available from the Showroom Box Offi ce – 0114 275 7727 and online www.showroomworkstation.org.uk/hardsteel

this week...

I can cut a piece of wood in half just by looking at it. It’s true, I saw it with my own eyes.

I told my son that if anybody ever tries to take his lunch money at school then he should headbutt them. The little sod was sent home today for breaking the dinner lady’s nose.

After bumping into David Attenborough earlier, I had to concede my wife was right. The back garden grass really does need cutting.

As childhoods go, mine was pretty rubbish.I was even bullied by my imaginary friend.

I was telling my son about an amazing outdoor water park I visited.I said, “You would love it, I can’t wait to show you the slides.”Excited, he replied, “Is this for real?”“Of course,” I smiled. “Now go set up the projector.”

I went to the greengrocers today and I picked up an iceberg lettuce. I said to the man at the counter, “Why is it these seem to be getting smaller and smaller?” “Global warming.” He replied.

My father’s dying words to me were “It’s all gone to the dogs.” I thought he was talking about his life in general until they read his will out.

Copley’s ColumnWe have enjoyed a fabulous week on Majorca, where the weather has been fantastic with not a cloud in the sky. The entertainment was really top class, and any act that secures a summer season is guaranteed to be superb. We had a pre-arranged meeting at the Palma Nova Palace with the best Elvis tribute I see, Steve ‘Elvis’ Nixon and he did not disappoint. The following night we were anxious to see a tribute to Tina Turner, performed by the very talented and vocally profi cient Victoria Miles, who fi lled the venue and was well received. We were really into the swing of things now and were tipped off that Vinnie Scott as a truly great Rod Stewart tribute, and he was described by the Majorcan press as being more like Rod Stewart than Rod himself, and although this was not entirely accurate, he was certainly very good. Next up the following evening was a man, Jon Paul, described as ‘the human jukebox’ who performed requests covering various genres of music, most of which was to our taste. If you are holidaying on Majorca, I strongly recommend a visit to Magalluf where Finnigan’s pub and the nearby Fountain Bar both put on some great acts, with the added bonus of a superb Chinese restaurant between the two, where we enjoyed the best food and service. We did however resist the temptation to go and see X Factor’s Rylan Clark. We raced back home from the airport to watch the tremendous Wimbledon fi nal and got the result we all wanted when Andy Murray prevailed to give us the fi rst British champion since Fred Perry as long ago as 1936. His wonderful gesture of donating his prize money to Cancer Research will assuredly get him a knighthood. His victory has without doubt

given everybody in the country a massive lift.I am happy to endorse the Dronfi eld Charity Music Festival, which is held annually at Carr Lane Recreational Ground in an all-day musical event to raise funds for local charities. This event is well organised by my friend of fi fty years, John Aspinall. Tickets pre-sold are £10 per adult and £4 for children and senior citizens with a £23 family concession, with under eights gaining free entrance when accompanied by an adult. Pre-event tickets can be obtained from Geoff’s DIY in the Dronfi eld Civic Centre or Dronfi eld Woodhouse Sports and Social Club. Tickets on the day are £12 Adults, £5 Children and Senior Citizens and £28 Family concession. Artistes appearing are headliners Firecracker/Vida and Gonzo with on the main stage The Canyon, Carnival, The Marv White Band, Johnny and the Moondogs, Gary J Armstrong, Lazy Little Spaces, The Isabellas, The Problem With Marie and The Four Merry Lads whilst on the Acoustic stage artistes appearing are Rob Sinclair, Acoustic Lily, Julia McInally, The Barsteward Sons of Val Doonican, Damion Downs, Simon Roe and Whiskey Bob Shaker.

Earth Angels are celestial beings in human form. They are very special people who will help anyone through a crisis. Earth Angels generally feel different from other people. If you feel as though you were dropped on this planet and are waiting for someone to take you home, you could well be an Earth Angel. You could be an Earth Angel if you have a passion and talent for healing, teaching and helping others, yet you yourself are having problems. Or if you are highly sensitive and dislike violence in any form. As we approach spiritual enlightenment the angel within us emerges to help teach and guide people through diffi cult times. By learning about the spiritual realm of origin you will understand more about your personality, behaviour and individual quirks, and you may discover you are indeed an Earth Angel. Earth Angels often have fair hair and unusual bluey green eyes, although their appearance can vary. You may discover you are an Incarnated Angel. You could be a reincarnated Sorceress, High Priest or even a Wizard. I have devised a quiz to discover Earth Angel potential: Q. Do you know when people are worried?a Never, I have too many problems of my own.b I don’t interfere in other peoples’ business.c I help if I am asked. Q. Do you have heightened senses of sight, hearing and smell?a Nob Yesc I often notice the scents and sounds of other people

Q. Do you have psychic or Deja vu moments?a Nob Yesc Sometimes Q. Do you feel that you can heal others? a Nob Yesc Sometimes Q. If someone was distressed in a shop would you help them?a Nob Yesc Sometimes Q. Do you have vivid dreams?a Nob Yesc Sometimes If you answered mostly A you are a reluctant Earth Angel. You have the ability to stay detached.

If you answered mostly B you are showing signs of an Earth Angel. You need to believe in yourself.

If you answered C you are a blossoming Earth Angel. You have many of the necessary qualities and you could develop into a beautiful Earth Angel. You have a natural analytical and empathic nature.

OLDER PEOPLE MISS OUT ON SUPPORT UNDER NEW RULES http://www.ageuk.org.uk/latest-news/care-rules-aim-to-end-postcode-lottery/

The government is attempting to end the ‘postcode lottery’ over care in England by creating a national eligibility criteria. But charities are concerned older people who need support with everyday tasks won’t get the help they need.Under new draft rules published by the Department of Health all councils in England would have to fund services for those whose judged to have ‘substantial’ needs from 2015.Care Minister, Norman Lamb has said the draft regulations, which are being published for discussion ahead of a formal consultation next year, would set the minimum threshold at ‘substantial’ - the level at which most councils currently operate.Older people who need help with everyday tasks will be excludedCharities, such as Age UK, are saying the criteria has been set too high and would exclude people who need help with everyday tasks.Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director General of Age UK commented: ‘We have always said national eligibility criteria are welcome for reasons of consistency, but only if they are set at a fair level. We believe the equivalent of “substantial” sets the bar too high: “moderate” would be much more in tune with the spirit of the Government’s new Care legislation, and with what the public has been led to expect.‘Although this may sound like a technicality the fi nal decision about these criteria is crucial: as it stands millions of older people and their families who have assumed they will benefi t from the Government’s social care reforms will miss out. But there is still time for the Government to change their minds and Age UK will be campaigning to persuade them to do so.’

CHANGES TO HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING SITE OPENING HOURS The opening hours for some of Sheffi eld’s Household Waste Recycling Centres have been reviewed to meet customer demand.Sheffi eld City Council and Veolia Environmental Services have agreed to introduce the changes from 25 July. The Blackstock Road site in Gleadless will be open an additional two days a week and it will close only on Wednesdays. The site at High Green will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays and the site at Deepcar will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The opening hours of the sites at Woodhouse and Shirecliffe will remain unchanged. There are fi ve Household Waste Recycling Centres in Sheffi eld for local residents to dispose of their household waste. The sites accept a wide range of materials, including bulky household waste such as furniture and electrical equipment, general household waste and garden waste. Last year, the opening hours of the fi ve sites were reduced to save money on waste services. This followed Government cuts to the Council’s budget that meant it was faced with a £170 million gap over the next four years. Having reduced the opening hours over 12 months ago, the volume of materials going through the sites has shown that the Blackstock Road site accepted more waste that the Deepcar and High Green sites combined, despite the Blackstock Road site being closed for three days a week as opposed to one day at Deepcar and High Green. The large number of vehicles wanting to access the site, together with the limited number of opening days, led to some problems with traffi c congestion in the Blackstock Road area. The changes being made will mean that from 25 July the opening hours of the sites will refl ect customer demand. This will help to reduce congestion at the Blackstock Road site by reducing the number of vehicles accessing the site on a daily basis by providing two extra opening days. Councillor Jack Scott, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene said: “Last year we had to make the diffi cult decision to reduce the opening hours of the sites due to the massive budget gap we were left with following Government cuts. “In making these further changes, the opening hours of the sites will be better balanced according to demand, helping to reduce traffi c congestion around the Blackstock Road site whilst ensuring that all residents in the north and south of the city have access to a site seven days a week.” For more information about Household Waste Recycling Centres, including the types of materials accepted at the sites, please contact Veolia on 0114 273 4567, visit: www.veolia.co.uk/sheffi eld or email: sheffi [email protected]

FIRST MEETING WITHOUT COMMITMENT

Conveyancing: Hooper v Oates – Breach of Contract

When purchasing property, both buyer and seller can pull out of a sale at any point up until they exchange contracts. Past this point pulling out would be in breach of contract entitling the other party to damages.A recent case has demonstrated that in an unstable housing market buyers should be particularly careful when it comes to pulling out of a sale. In the case of Hooper v Oates a buyer failed to complete a house purchase for £605,000 just prior to the housing market crash. The sellers were unable to sell the property at that price again despite reducing the asking price. Eventually they moved back into the house, at which point

SINGING IS INDEED GOOD FOR YOU SAYS YORKSHIRE HEART CHARITYA Yorkshire charity that holds its own annual “Sing for Your Heart” event, has welcomed new research that backs up its view that singing is good for your heart.Heart Research UK has been saying for years that singing is good for you based on research that shows it increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Now Scientists in Sweden, investigating the effects of music on our well-being, have found the calming effects of collective singing could be as benefi cial to a person’s health as yoga. They have found that when people participate in a choir their heartbeats become synchronised, and their pulses increase and decrease in union. The researchers at the University of Gothenburg made the discovery after asking a group to perform three different choral exercises – monotone humming, singing a hymn and chanting a slow mantra – while their heart rate was monitored. The results revealed the music’s melody and structure was directly linked to the cardiac activity of the choir.Leeds-based Heart Research UK, which is calling on

choirs across the country to plan ahead and sign up for its annual Sing for Your Heart events in the run up to Christmas, has welcomed the new research as it backs previous studies by people like Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London who says there are also psychological benefi ts to singing in a choir.Katharine Greathead, Lifestyle Offi cer for Heart Research UK, said: “It’s great that singing is in the news again and new research is once more highlighting the link with heart health. Singing is easy to do and in so many styles, a great activity to fi t into our busy, stressed out lives. You don’t have to be X-Factor potential, just give your vocal chords a work out: sing along to your favourite tunes at home, join a local choir or get your workmates to a karaoke booth for some heart-healthy singing and laughter. Just sing your heart out!”Professor Graham Welch has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years and says the health benefi ts are both physical and psychological. “Psychological benefi ts of singing are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.”Join Heart Research UK in its annual Sing for Your Heart event from 8-15 December. it was valued at £495,000.The Court of Appeal upheld an award for damages against the buyer to the sum of £110,000 – clearly a very expensive change of heart for the buyer. What the Judgement Means For YouIt is clear that buyers who breach their contract and fail to complete on a sale can face heavy penalties and can be held liable for any loss in value incurred by the seller as a result of the breach. In practice however, being unable to complete on a purchase is a rare event. The very process of conveyancing is a thorough one and it is designed to ensure that at every stage every buyer and seller in the chain is fully informed, able and willing to continue with the transaction at every stage before contracts are exchanged. They chew your shoes, slobber on the furniture and leave nasty surprises in the garden, but more than seven million over 50s can’t live without their cat or dog. However, Saga Pet Insurance estimates that only one in three insure their furry friends.

Perhaps the reason for this lack of proper cover is because half of over 50s think people are unlikely to claim on their pet insurance. However, data suggests that the over 50s are in fact more likely to claim on their pet insurance than any other type of insurance. Almost one in three Saga pet insurance customers has made a claim, and pet insurance customers are three times more likely to make a claim than motor insurance customers2.

Dogs and cats are prone to recurring complaints, and the most common claims for pets are arthritis, tumours and heart problems. These claims alone make up almost a fi fth of all pet insurance claims3.

Animal lovers could be left penniless if their pooch becomes poorly. Research shows that the average pet claim is almost £6504, but some customers have faced bills of £20,000, when their dog has injured someone else5.

The wisest pet owners are those in East Anglia, as they are the most likely to insure their pets in case of an emergency. However, pet lovers in East Midlands are the most willing to take a risk and leave their pets uninsured.

Roger Ramsden, chief executive, Saga Services, commented: “A sick pet can be the cause of family heartache, and with vets bills soaring by 10% last year, it can also cause a fi nancial headache if pets don’t have the proper cover.”

A weekend of long and short distance running is to be held this weekend at Whirlow Hall Farm. The Dig Deep event will see runners compete in a variety of races varying in length, the shortest being the offi cial Whirlow Hall Farm charity race, the Whirlow 10k right up to 60 miles with the Ultra tour of the Peak District. All races over the weekend will begin and end at Whirlow Hall Farm, taking in the beautiful scenery of the peak district. Starting with the Intro Ultra 30 and the Ultra Tour of the Peak District on Saturday, Sunday will be host to the Whirlow 10k where all funds go directly towards the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust and the 12.12 trail trace. Entry to all the races closes this Friday so there is still plenty of time to enter!

A Charity Fundraising Day suitable for all the family will also be taking place on the Sunday from 10am – 3pm complete with lots of fun activities such as archery, a climbing wall, sheep racing and the famous Whirlow BBQ. Whirlow Hall Farm Trust is an educational charity providing a ‘classroom in the countryside’, where inner-city children from South Yorkshire can experience the countryside and develop an understanding of where their food comes from. The Trust needs to raise £300,000 each year to continue to offer their resources. Entry to the Whirlow 10k cost £12 and £10 of this registration fee will go directly to the Trust, helping children from across South Yorkshire. More information and entry details can be found online at www.digdeepraces.co.uk.

GUIDE

This weekend we recorded a special memorial concert for David Lever. David, who was head of Rotherham Schools Music Service, passed away almost a year ago. The Rotherham Schools Music Service put together a youth orchestra from across the years where David conducted for the event. The programme for the concert was carefully chosen by David’s family. The second part of the concert was led by a close friend of David’s - John Hinckley. The two were in the Brighouse and Raistrick Brass Band together in the 1970’s when the band were almost top of the charts with The Floral Dance. John conducted the David Lever Memorial Brass Band, made up of colleagues from across their brass banding years. Also involved in the concert were vocalist Gary Dearlove and composer Alexander Bermange. Alexander composed two tribute pieces for the day - one a comedy song using a selection of David’s many phrases and the second, which can be heard on our Facebook page, talked about the legacy that David leaves in music. The performances were fabulous from all involved and we are delighted to be able to play the concert in one of our In Concert programmes. The broadcast date is yet to be confi rmed and will be released through our website and Facebook.

Radio Nightingale broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for the patients and staff of the Rotherham General Hospital on 945 &1350mw, Hospedia and online. For more information about the station visit www.radionightingale.org.uk

I love travelling by train even though I’m often horrifi ed at the high cost of tickets. The expansion of the railways in the 19th century and related engineering achievements helped to change this nation in many ways. There were great benefi ts for working class people who could travel more often and further than possible before. More products, both agricultural and industrial, could be transported more quickly around the country and burgeoning urban populations fed more effectively. Railways also helped to spread the club movement. A great industry grew up around railways and just as with many others, the employees thought it would be a good idea to have their own clubs. Wherever there was a major train station or an important junction, railwaymen would fi nd premises to establish their own club. Crewe has strong links to the railways and is a major hub. The local football team, Crewe Alexandra is often referred to as The Railwaymen. We can also fi nd clubs in places we perhaps don’t expect them because of the railways, such as in the South West. But we would expect a club in Darlington, which has strong historical links with trains. When the new Darlington Club and Institute was set up in 1901, it was by a group of railwaymen. They were personally assisted by B.T. Hall, the CIU’s longest serving General Secretary. He visited the club and supplied the 1st committee with model rules, books and literature on management of a club. London had its major stations and near these, clubs grew up such as at Kings Cross and Euston. The Great Western Railway set up its workshops in Swindon and all along that line we can fi nd clubs. We can fi nd The Taunton Railway Club at Upper Station Approach, formerly run by the Great Western Railiway Staff Association (GWRSA). Unfortunately, this could soon be lost if the planned revamp of the station and surrounding area takes place. There is local disagreement about the redevelopment, some seeing it as a waste of money as well as a loss of heritage sites. One of the CIU’s convalescent home, the Saltburn Centre bought in 1909, was originally built as part of Henry Pease’s model development for his steel and railway workers. The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club sitcom may have been a popular TV parody of working men’s clubs, but these were jobs that once existed on the railways.

Well another week has gone by and we’re still none the wiser with our ‘Clip around the ear’ big prize contest. If you haven’t heard so far, we’ve recorded a mystery noise and are asking you to identify it to win a super digital radio. We’ve given as a clue that it is a sound we recorded outside. Amongst the most recent wrong answers, we’ve found out that it’s not a skipping rope, a jar of screws or the bells on a morris dancer’s baton. We also found out it’s not clanking milk bottles, a road roller, a drain cleaner or a road sweeper. The wrong answers keep fl ooding in day by day.Simply, all you have to do is to switch on Magic, have a guess as to what you think it is and you could be our next winner like Paul in Rotherham who guessed the previous one was the sound of an ironing board being put up. We’ve also added a free CD album on to the prize pile as well, so the stakes have been upped. Just join Glenn and myself at 7.20 during the Breakfast Show Monday to Friday for details on how to enter.Remember, the longer you listen, the more answers you’ll hear and the more hints you’ll get as to what it is. During the show there are also the daily horoscopes, a full look at what’s going on and the Music Box contest with all sorts of prizes up for grabs. Join us in the morning for a bit of fun when you wake up, Trevor

DROP DEADSUMMER COLLECTION

PREVIEW

Words by KT Evans

It’s a given fact that Sheffi eld’s inner city summer period would not be complete without its annual Tramlines Festival. Drawing in over 80,000 gig lovers from across the country, our cities music venues, parks, open spaces and streets are transformed into music mecca, with over 70 locations platforming new and established live acts. Held from 19th – 21st July 2013, this is our heads up on certain changes to Tramlines 2013…The main difference about this year’s event as oppose to the previous four other Tramlines is, of course, ticket entry. Ensuring bands can be drawn into Sheffi eld’s summer event from an international calibre, event organisers are now charging £6.00 per day. The offi cial Tramlines website states, ‘A combination of factors have meant what we have had to introduce a ticket model – the loss of Nokia as sponsor, the reduced council budget, the costs for the major venues of putting on bigger shows, and increasing safety costs relating to an ever growing audience.’ However, there are still a handful of locations that are free to enjoy like Weston Park, Folk Forest, the Cathedral and Peace Gardens along with the many pubs around Sheffi eld. Just remember…if you normally have to pay for entry into a venue, you will need to purchase a wristband to gain entry on Tramlines weekend. So how do I get a ticket? Simple – you have one of two options. Either pay on the day by walking up to the main entrance and exchanging £6.00 for you day wristband. This will guarantee you fast-track entry into all of the Tramlines stages, including the main stage of Devonshire Green, Corporation, Plug, The Harley etc. If you are looking to purchase a weekend wristband, these can be bought online, priced at £15.000 plus booking fee for the entire weekend plus a free programme. Single day tickets can also be bought online at www.tramlines.org.uk . You can pick up your wristband if you have ordered it online outside the City Hall on Friday 4pm – 9pm, Saturday 9am – 9pm or Sunday 9am – 5pm. Single day tickets can also be bought from offi cial Tramlines Outlets including The Harley, The Wick At Both Ends, 02 Academy and The City Hall with no additional booking fee.And that really is all there is to it…under 5’s go free, so no ticket is required but the main point to remember for Tramlines 2013 is – if you normally pay to get into a venue, you will need to buy a wristband to gain entry for Tramlines weekend. This year’s festival includes Toddla T, Lianna La Havas and 2.54. Check out www.tramlines.org.uk for all the information you need.

Before we get going, we thought it would seem fi tting to tell you the brief background information behind Drop Dead. Owned by Bring Me The Horizon Frontman Oli Sykes, the company was launched in 2005 in Sheffi eld and has since blossomed into one of the world’s most sought after alternative clothing lines. Catering for both males and females, it would be pretty hard not to have noticed at least twenty people parading around your local rock music venue in Drop Dead…this however, is all about to change…Although initially priding themselves on supplying the trendiest threads for hardcorians across the world, Drop Dead’s Summer ’13 collection is all about broadening its horizons (Bring Me The Horizon…broadening horizons, get it?). Long gone are the days of loose fi tting, baggy A Line T-shirts, making room for a modern, tailored Drop Dead. In come bat wing chiffon shirts, tailored jacket and nipped in jerseys, along with a boutique-esque range of jewellery and accessories. Putting it in leyman’s terms, Drop Dead has grown up.Hell don’t get us wrong, the brand has still remained true to form, click on the website and you’re instantly hit with the brash, bold fonts intertwined within the Summer Range (Drop Dead wouldn’t be Drop Dead if it didn’t incorporate a line of donuts in its design right?) however mirroring that of the owners own personal music career, the brand has stepped itself up yet another notch. Whether you’re a huge fan of alternative music or simply want to experiment with an up-to-date, cutting edge line of fashion, Drop Dead can now be your fi rst port of call.Along with a roster of bands within their family to include Young Guns, Polar and You Me At Six, Drop Dead is also appealing to celebrities which you may not have initially coined together with the brand. We’re pretty sure the image of Justin Bieber in the classic ‘I <3 Drop Dead’ t-shirt is genuine, not to mention chart toppers The Satudays along with popstar Rita Ora, both sporting staple items off the companies back catalogue. But what does this mean for Drop Dead? The answer is crystal clear…expanding. With an increasing amount of support from bands, celebrities and fans alike, Drop Dead will forever remember its grass roots within its native Steel city, however with a logo recognised across the world, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Drop Dead stores opening in every major capital…don’t believe us? Check out the Summer ’13 range for yourself then! Visit www.iheartdropdead.com for the new Summer Collection.

ANNOUNCEMENTS, PREVIEWS, RELEASES + A LOT MORE

I was invited to the premier of sci-fi blockbuster, Pacifi c Rim, this week, and should have been suspicious when I learned it wasn’t being shown at the local multiplex but was instead held at a grubby cinema just out of town (the one with wipe-clean seating). It turns out there had been a mistake and I had been invited to the premier of Pacifi c Rim Job instead, which was another type of movie entirely. There weren’t any fi ghting robots in it but there were loads of ‘monsters’ and a whole load of fi st action. I should have known something was amiss when my ticket came with a bottle of lotion (I was expecting 3d glasses). It must have been a weepy movie because there was a box of tissues on every seat. I missed the climax as I walked out half way through. But on that note, I did hear the movie had a happy ending. Approximately twenty of them! I’m so glad it wasn’t in 3D! Pacifi c Rim – the movie comes out on Friday and it’s set to be one of the big action blockbusters of the summer. If you like fi ghting robots (no not those crappy Transformers) then go see Pacifi c Rim.AND if you like movies with actions you can only perform after a nice long bath – then check out Pacifi c Rim Job*.

What is going on with Kerry Katona? No, I’m not going to take some low brow pot shot at her this week, but I do want to talk about the irony of Cash Lady (the company that sells quick loans for easy ladies – hang on, shouldn’t that be easy loans for quick ladies?). Anyway, the company behind Cash Lady dropped Katona faster than one of Louis Walsh’s boy bands once they discover their fi rst pube. The company cited Katona as a ‘bad role model’... So, let’s get this straight. You hired Katona knowing her ‘chequered’ history, yet now she’s fi led for bankruptcy a second time she’s no longer fi t to headline your crappy brand? Talk about double standards of epic proportions.

But how does anyone go bankrupt. Twice. I mean, how careless is that? Did she forget about the fi rst bankruptcy or just forget to budget? It can’t be easy for her when Iceland

dropped her. I mean she’ll now have to pay full price for food at Tesco like the rest of us. And how is she making any money? How she’s still in the public eye. These absolutely no-talent zelebrities keep on coming back again and again and just like that herpes sore, there’s no chance of her fading away on a permanent basis. She’ll simply sell another sob story of how her wild lifestyle brought her to the edge of ruin, thus keeping her in the media for another few months. Or she’ll have another baby and we’ll all be ‘fascinated’ all over again!

And lastly this week, a bit of a rant. Yes, Sheffi eld, it’s hot! We get it. But do people have to complain so bitterly about the fi rst bit of nice weather we’ve had all year. The British public has an amazingly short memory. Does anyone recall that winter this year lasted six months and it wasn’t that long ago that the temperatures were still wallowing around zero? But we still complain now the thermostat is rising. We should be enjoying this summer weather, not complaining at every possible opportunity that it’s too hot. After all, it’ll soon be winter again and another six months of cold and, of course, the inevitable complains about the plummeting temperatures. And then I’ll be telling you where to put your thermostat – but if you’re unsure, here’s a hint – it’s a very personal place that will allow you to keep it toasty warm for the entirety of winter!

*Not available anywhere. Although it’s probably coming soon to your local adult store.

Unfortunately I haven’t been on the banks this week as an accident involving a family member has meant numerous trips to hospital as we await further outcome.....never mind, I’ve still been busy with other angling related stuff though when I’ve had chance! This week has seen most of the new Marukyu 2013 product range hit the shops in what can only be described as organised chaos! A shipping delay has meant that orders have been backlogged, and stock held until those orders can be fulfi lled, but what a response we have had to the new products! As soon as the stock has gone on sale, repeat orders have been received from retailers who have sold out already! So, what is on offer? The impressive JPz hook pellets see a fantastic addition to the existing Ebi (red) and Nori (green) with the aptly titled ‘Black’ which have a yeast like aroma and has achieved some astonishing results already; the pellets are available on 6, 8 and 10mm sizes and can be side hooked, hair rigged or banded to give plenty of options. The Luxus groundbaits are price competitive at £3.99 a bag and Marukyu offer a method mix and more active mix for warmer temperatures which are guaranteed to drive fi sh crazy! The Credence range comprises both boilies and additives aimed squarely at the specimen angler; the Marine Liquid is a super sticky gloopy liquid which adheres to almost anything and doesn’t wash off as soon as the bait enters the water; mix it with groundbaits or stick mixes and you are on to a winner... Krill Feast and Fruit Spice boilies replace the former Marukyu range of Japanese labelled baits which often proved confusing to anglers, so by listening to customers, Marukyu have clarifi ed exactly what the customer is getting, and also used improved processing to enhance the baits. I’ve already used the Krill baits to take over thirty carp in a few short hours! There are also ‘Change Baits’; smaller bags of 10mm boilies designed to be thrown in the tackle bag and used when times are tough to offer an alternative. Available in fi ve punchy fl avours, these smaller bags give the consumer a range of options without breaking the bank and their small size means they can be deadly for tench and bream too...especially big ones!I know, you’ve heard it all before....about the new ‘wonder’ baits which catch anything that swims?! Well why not check out the Marukyu Facebook or Twitter pages? There are loads of catch reports, match wins and framings and much more, which tells of happy anglers are with the new baits. Since joining Marukyu, I’m very aware that customer feedback is everything, so I’m always listening and watching to see what others think; this stuff has been roundly accepted as some of the most scientifi cally advanced and nutritious bait on the market...it’s bait not food and it attracts fi sh without feeding them, so they keep looking for it! www.marukyu.co.uk for more news.

SP RTLOCAL FOOTBALL, FISHING, HORSE RACING EVERY WEEKSPONSORED BY CHAMPS

It’s another big weekend of fl at racing with 9 races scheduled to be shown on Channel 4. Four races come from Newmarket where the feature races are the Group 1 Darley July Cup and the Group 2 Superlative Stakes. Three races come from York with the John Smith’s Cup being the highlight and two are from Ascot where the Group 2 Summer Mile is the feature. With the warm summer weather around the ground is likely to be very quick.

Ascot:1.55 Betfred Mobile Sports Handicap, 3yo+, 5f:With over twenty of the entrants having bettered 100 in my speed ratings last time out this is likely to be a closely fought contest. However, David O’Meara looks to hold the key to this one and, with his Move In Time having run well in a fast-run Group 3 5 furlong race at The Curragh last time, can chalk up another victory here. His Smoothtalkinrascal also ran well last time but may stay at home if the selection turns out. Ancient Cross could be dangerous if putting in a show and others that could play a part are: Racy; Jiroft; La Fortunata; Sir Maximilian; and Steps.

2.30 Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes, Group 2, 4yo+, 1m:Mike de Kock’s The Apache gets the nod after putting in two excellent efforts behind the improving Sajjhaa in Group 1 races in Dubai back in March. Next best could be Godolphin’s Moonwalk in Paris followed very closely by Aljamaheer, Gregorian and Producer. The latter scored in good style in a Newmarket Group 3 contest last week and could again hold too many guns for Red Jazz and Pastoral Player who fi nished second and third then.

Newmarket:2.05 32Red Casino Handicap, 3yo, 0-100, 1m:Last week Prince of Johanne won the Coral Challenge handicap at Sandown in a very fast time which may point up the chances of Richard Hannon’s Wentworth here. Hopefully he will turn out for the race but, if not, the reserve order of preference is: Defendant; Correspondent; Tarikhi; Fehaydi; Law Enforcement; and Sennockian Star.

2.40 32Red.com Superlative Stakes, Group 2, 2yo, 7f:A very interesting Group 2 is in the offi ng here with 6 undefeated colts in the line-up and another couple of last time out winners to boot. With so many that are unexposed and in the “could be anything” category it is hard to be too dogmatic about the chances of any of them. Aidan O’Brien’s Fountain of Youth did not win last time out but ran a very good race to fi nish fourth in the Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meeting having found himself having to race on the wrong side of the track. He gets the nod in this one after he “won” the race on his side of the track, beating 12 rivals over there but not being able to cope with the stands-side runners. The reserve order is: Washaar; Sir John Hawkins; Vigor; Good Old Boy Lukey; Stubbs; Rosso Corsa; and Toormore.

3.15 32Red Bunbury Cup (Heritage Handicap), 3yo+, 7f:This highly competitive race may perhaps highlight the form of the improving Diescentric if Bertiewhittle lands the spoils here – which I fully expect him to. Burn the

Boats may be the one to give him most to do, along with Trail Blaze and Santefi sio. Others that cannot be left out of the reckoning are: Gramercy; Es Que Love; Glen Moss; Harrison George; Outdo; Queensberry Rules; and Tarooq.

3.50 Darley July Cup, Group 1, 3yo+, 6f:The two Powers (Slade and Sole) come here with every chance after scoring last time out. Between the two I have a very marginal preference for Slade Power after his last time out fast –run Group 3 success at The Curragh but he may not make the trip over from Ireland. This leaves Sole Power, who won the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes last timeout, as a relatively straightforward choice for fi rst reserve to the selection. The remaining reserve order is: Reply; Shea Shea; Reckless Abandon; Shamexpress; Sovereign Debt; Gale Force Ten; and Hamza.

York:2.20 John Smith’s Silver Cup (Handicap), Listed, 3yo+, 0-110, 1m 6f:William Haggas’ Guarantee gets the vote to prevail over Warlu Way, Cousin Khee, Sun Central and Terenbaum. He has excellent form with some cut but probably handles quick ground almost as well and, as the horse with the top lifetime speed fi gure in my system and also with the best last time out fi gure, should be able to go close. Warlu Way and Cousin Khee will be no pushovers however.

2.55 54th John Smith’s Cup (Heritage Handicap), 3yo+, 1m 2f 88yds:Several big stables hold strong hands for this most competitive of handicaps. It may however go (for the second year in a row) to Peter Chapple-Hyam’s King’s Warrior who looks to have been kept for this race. Richard Fahey’s stable has a couple of very interesting contenders in Area Fifty One and Spirit of the Law while Time Easterby also has interesting contenders in Rye House and Silvery Moon. Robert Eddery’s Vasily also enters the reckoning on my calculations. In order of preference the reserves are: Rye House; Vasily; Cousin Khee; Silvery Moon; Whispering Warrior and Area Fifty One

3.30 John Smith’s City Walls Stakes, Listed, 3yo+, 5f:If Move in Time (also entered for the 1.55 at Ascot) turns up here he may well win. There is little between him and Medicean Man on running behind Slade Power at The Curragh last week so if the selection goes to Ascot Medicean Man would be a very able deputy. After these two the preferred order is: Mirza; Justineo; Borderlescott; Heeraat; Smoothtalkinrascal; and Stepper Point.

Sheffi eld Wednesday played out a 1-1 draw with Romanian Champions Steaua Bucharest at St George’s Park in Burton on Saturday and manager Dave Jones has said the game was an excellent workout for his side.Bucharest went in front in the private friendly through Adrian Popa’s fi rst half strike which arrowed into the bottom corner.Miguel Llera headed the Owls level after the interval, connecting with Rhys McCabe’s deep free kick. After the game, Jones said: “It was a very good workout.“Steaua are getting prepared for playing in the Champions League so they are ahead of us in terms of their development but it was a good game.“Our lads are fi t, they look good, they’ve come back in good shape and it was a really good workout all round.“Everybody played a part in the game, all the pros played a part and there were no injuries which was even better. We looked very strong. In hot conditions in Burton, Jones was pleased with how his side fared against diffi cult opposition as Wednesday’s pre-season schedule got underway. He added: “One or two trialists took part in the game, as did some of the youngsters as well so it was a very, very good workout.“It was a good workout for Steaua because in around ten days, they are going to be getting themselves ready for the Champions League qualifi ers.“They’ve had other friendlies against Notts County and Livingston and on Saturday they said they stepped it up another gear.”

LEE ANSWERS WEIR’S CALL

THE BENEFIT OF INTENSITY

ROVERS WARM UP AT RETFORD

Lee Carsley says the chance to team up with former Everton team-mate David Weir at Bramall Lane is a ‘fantastic opportunity’ to further his coaching career. The former Republic of Ireland international joined the Blades as Assistant Manager - Technical last week and currently touring Scotland with Weir and the fi rst-team squad.Speaking from United’s training base north of the border, Carsley remarked:“This is a fantastic opportunity to come to a club like Sheffi eld United and work closely alongside David (Weir).“We got on fantastically well as players and we have kept in touch throughout our time as coaches.“We are constantly sharing different ideas, but importantly we share the same philosophies about the game.”The midfi elder who arrives from Coventry City, where he was caretaker manager for a short spell last season added:“Working in League One at Coventry City last season was a new thing to me, but I worked at all levels there so I also have a good knowledge of players progressing through the system in and around the top two divisions.“I did a lot of scouting on future opponents at Coventry so from my research last season I know what this squad is capable of.“I remember playing against the Blades in the Premiership and when the crowd backs the team Bramall Lane is often a formidable place to visit.“Our aim is to get the club back to where it belongs, it is going to be a long journey, but we personally I can’t wait to get started.”

Within United’s Scottish training camp, Richard Cresswell is in the thick of his 19th pre-season work-out.The 35-year-old keeps himself in good shape and is enjoying this summer’s regime under new boss David Weir and the Blades coaching team.Cresswell and his team-mates took part in a training session at Glasgow Rangers’ Murray Park on Monday, building up tXo Wednesday’s fi nal game of the three-match tour, which is against Raith Rovers

(7.30pm kick-off).“Pre-season gets hard when you get into the 30s, especially with the young ones running about, but I look after myself physically and this pre-season has been really enjoyable,” said Cresswell.“It has been based around playing football, rather than lots of running. We’ve kept a high intensity and we’ve been working on our fi tness through football and hopefully we’ll see the benefi ts of that when the season kicks off.”Cresswell, of course, fi nished last season with an injury, sustained whilst on loan at York City, but says he is fully fi t and raring to go.He adds: “I’m glad I went to York and got a few games, helping them stay up. The calf strain was not nice but I’m fi ne now and I’m delighted that I’ve been able to join in every session during pre-season.”

Doncaster Rovers yet again carried on the tradition of playing local non-league teams during the closed season as Paul Dickov’s side faced Retford United.Once again Rovers fi elded two entirely different teams in each half of the game in an effort to ensure every player in the squad got game time. The fi rst 45 saw Neil Sullivan in goal with a back four of Rob Jones, Liam Wakefi eld, Andy Griffi n and Tommy Spurr ahead of him. The midfi eld consisted of Marc De Val Fernandez, David Cotterill and two trialists. Billy Paynter started the game upfront alongside a trialist.Missing from the matchday squads were Paul Keegan (thigh), James Copppinger (illness), Jamie McCombe (back), Jon Maxted (illness).Chances were hard to come by in the fi rst half for Rovers as their opponents showed there intent from the off. The Badgers didn’t allow Dickov’s men any time on the ball in the fi rst half and their determination to press the ball paid dividends when Reece Thompson fi red past Neil Sullivan. Rovers were unable to level the scores in the fi rst half and went in at the break a goal down. The second half saw a totally different line-up to the fi rst; Neil Sullivan was replaced with a trialist in Rovers’ goal. The back four consisted of Paul Quinn, Evan Finnegan, Jean Yves M’voto and a trialist. Midfi eld saw David Syers join James Harper, James Husband, Josh Meade and Dean Furman whilst Chris Brown played up front. There was a marked improvement from the off and Rovers started to get a foothold in the game. Chris Brown scored his third goal in two games when he charged down the Retford keeper’s clearance early on to level the scores.Brown then went on to bag another before David Syers added a third. Brown completed his hat-trick with a penalty kick making it 5 goals in 2 games. After the game Paul Dickov gave his thoughts on this afternoon’s proceedings: “Performance wise it was pretty poor; the player know that.“First half especially we were sloppy with and without the ball; we gave away a sloppy goal and went 1-0 down.“Second half we were better, we moved the ball around with a bit of purpose and got stuck in.“Since Tuesday night they have took a bit of a battering in training and maybe they were a little bit leggy today but that is what we want. We want them to be able to go out there and handle the ball when they are tired. “It’s about setting standards individually and as a team; we need to set them standards high and we need to keep to them.”

MILLERS START 13/14 WITH A VICTORY

Rotherham United got their pre-season off to a winning start, with a 2-0 victory over Parkgate in scorching heat at Roundwood.Following a goalless fi rst-half, manager Steve Evans made 10 changes for the second period, and saw the game settled by two Daniel Nardiello goals. Adam Collin, Richard Brindley and Danny Hylton all got their fi rst run out in a Millers shirt ahead of the fi rst-half, whilst Nicky Walker and Dan Rowe were also in the starting line-up.And it was Walker who made much of the early running, cutting in from the left-hand side and fi ring goalwards, only to see his shot tipped over by an in-form ‘keeper. There was little action of note to follow before Walker again stung the palms of the goalkeeper, after picking the ball up on the touchline, beating three players infi eld and eventually being denied low to the near post. Two more shots were tipped over, fi rstly when Mitchell Rose took aim from distance and then when Rowe attacked a set-piece and stabbed goalwards. From the resultant corner of the latter, Rowe again had a chance but blazed over from close-range. Hylton thought he’d broken the deadlock on the half hour mark when Rose put him through on goal; he rounded the ‘keeper and rolled into an empty net, but was denied by the linesman’s fl ag. The former Aldershot man went close again just before half-time but his shot on the turn was blocked.Only youngster Rowe remained on the pitch for the second period, as manager Steve Evans changed things around, with three more debuts, this time for Rob Milsom, David Worrall and Michael Tidser entering the fray. However, it was three familiar faces who went closest in the fi rst 10 minutes of the half as skipper Johnny Mullins headed at the goalkeeper, Ben Pringle curled wide and Alex Revell volleyed just past the post from Worrall’s cross.Milsom, operating at left-back had a shot from distance go narrowly over before trying his luck with a header, but with the same result.Just after the hour mark, Nardiello broke the deadlock when he volleyed into the bottom corner from David Worrall’s cross and after him and striker partner Revell both went close later in the half, he sealed the game with a low left-footed drive from the edge of the box.
