U.I.L. Student Congress

State Capital, Austin, Texas (Dolores Torres, Staff Reporter)

UIL Student Congress simulates the democratic legislative

debate process of the U.S. legislature. Part of the debate

process includes the submission of mock legislation

generated from students. Fox Tech submitted legislation

regarding the use of body cameras by law enforcement.

Tech's legislation was selected to be argued at the state

competition.

On January 11-13th, our UIL Student Congress Team

competed at the Texas State Capital in Austin, Texas. During

the rigorous debate exchanges, Junior – Andrew Kamali

advanced to the Super Congress final round of competition.

Andrew was the only congressional debater arguing

legislation from the San Antonio area. He would finish the

day with an impressive ranking of #10 .

Ms. Casanova is extremely proud of Andrew and the entire

Fox Tech UIL Congress team. Great job resenting Fox Tech.

new album “Purpose.” His hit songs, “What Do You Men?” and

“Sorry” currently place 2nd and 3rd on the Billboard 100. The album

includes 14 new tracks (19 on the deluxe edition.) “Purpose”

features many guest artists, such as, Big Sean, Travis Scott, Ariana

Grande, Skrillex, Diplo, Nas, and Halsey. “The significance of my

album Purpose is basically just to let people know that whether you

lost your purpose, or you don’t feel like you have a purpose, it’s

really important you find it” comments Justin Bieber on his recent

work. Fans love Justin’s new direction and outlook. Freshmen

Kendall Abney says “I like Justin’s album because it has lots of

meaning. It symbolizes change in a person.”

DEBT OF HONOR

On December 3rd, U.S. History students were treated to a screening of “Debt of Honor” which

was featured on PBS. Local television PBS affiliate KLRN provided an opportunity for our

students to screen the film. As an added bonus, students were able to engage with the film’s

director, Ric Burns. Debt of Honor examines the way in which the federal government and

society as a whole have regarded disabled veterans throughout our history, beginning in the

aftermath of the Revolutionary War through today’s continuing conflicts in the Middle East.

Ric Burns answered student questions, and shared his thoughts and inspirations regarding

the making of his film. Part of the documentary was filmed in San Antonio which featured

interviews from the Wounded Warriors Project. The students were thrilled that the director

spoke so highly of his visit to San Antonio. Junior - Onley Guerra said, “The film was very

interesting. It gave me a lot to think about, the idea that our improved technology has led

toward an increase in the survival of war injuries. And then those veterans, who would have

probably died in the past, must somehow find a way to integrate back into society with some

severe physical and mental injuries. It’s an issue we really seem to ignore.”

Social Studies teacher Mr. Robert Martinez was thrilled at the opportunity afforded his

students, “the documentary shed light on a field of medicine and social commentary not often

addressed in the public media or educational system. Thank you, Ric Burns, PBS, and

KLRN.”

Martin Luther King March

(Lauren Reyna, Staff Reporter)

Fox Tech students joined 300,000 fellow San Antonians in a tribute march to Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. on Monday, January 18th. The longest MLK march in the nation traveled along a 2.3

mile route through our city’s eastside. Mr. Martinez was said that he was proud that students

took the time to honor this great American. No doubt, our students had an opportunity to

reflect on the accomplishments of the past and the challenges of the future. “It was amazing to

see so many people there marching together for a common cause,” shared Jose Pinedo.
