......Visits...... On the 15 June 2010, 3 of the team went to Bolton Library and got involved with the “Human Library.” Human Library?! Bizarre eh? Anyway we’ve got all the info about the “Human Library” right here: “Imagine borrowing a book from your school library. You enter, look around for a bit, you choose a book, you take it to the librarian, you borrow it and you read it. Now imagine a different library, one where the books are people, and where reading is replaced by a conversation. You enter your school library, you look around, you choose a human book from a catalogue of human books, you borrow that book and you have a conversation.” This is a Human Library. Developed 10 years ago in Denmark, the Human Library creates a space for a chat with people who would not usual-ly get a chance to sit down and talk about their differences in a positive way. In today’s communities it is important to help your understanding and increase the social interaction between groups and individuals.

Here is our interview with Mrs Katy Kellet - Head of Starting Point school. About Katy: Katy is the head teacher at Starting Point which provides the children of refugees with the stability to rebuild confidence and trust, and the skills to help them integrate into mainstream education. “Her enthusiasm, caring approach and dedication is amazing” “This and my name, Is all the allowed me to bring” - The story of how one child’s simple statement started a commitment to working with the most vulnerable of our most valuable assets. I hope to see a lot more happening here at Bolton Library and around Bolton, and the project has been around the world. Can you tell us what you think of refugee week etc. Well refugee week is a great thing and it helps for people to understand how lucky they are. Everybody has a story and everyone judges others. When the students from my school first come to England, “The simple things to us, they take for granted, but to us, it’s not much” Once somebody said to me, look at these kids, their quite greedy so I answered them and said their not greedy, its survival in their situation, if there's food they will eat it, they won’t waste it because tomorrow they may be no food left. When people in the town centre throw food down to the birds, the pupils in my school if they were still in their other country they would kill for that bit of food. Can you give us an insight in to how bad it is for the refugees: Well, the youngest unaccompanied refugee pupil at my school was 2 and a half. On their way to England her mum got stopped whilst crossing the border so she threw her child to another woman who had crossed the border. The child had a bag and in the bag was a photo and an address, on the address it said London so the other woman took the little child to the address but the people have moved and have a new address in Bolton, which the child was then took to and this child has no memories of their mum and dad. About the girl who I mentioned “This and my name was all I was allowed to bring.” The girl was seven years old and I had loads of equipment out for painting and making etc. and she wasn’t using anything so I asked why and she said that statement. That will al-ways stay with me it’s quite powerful.

The Ladybridge High Sports Mania is a magazine which is run by the English Department!

Close your eyes and think about the following: Total desperation. I was put onto a lorry, my mum said bye-bye I never saw her again. I have sleepless nights. It’s horrific. Now think if that was you what would you do? Time to get involved write down on a piece of paper what you’d do and give it to your form teacher who will then pass them to Mrs Peachman! Or go onto our VLE!!!

A Real-life Story

Gulwali: I am Gulwali Passarlay from Afghanistan. I have been in the UK for 3 Years. I have lived in Bolton for one year. I go to Essa academy school! Gulwali Passarlay is 15 (nearly 16) he left his home country of Afghanistan in 2007 aged just 13. When he was seeking refuge, he got into a lot of trouble as he crossed 10 countries on his journey. He got here by all modes of transport; trains, cars, trucks, boats you name it he used it. At one point he was in Turkey in the middle of nowhere, with no food or water for 3 days, can you imagine what it would be like if that happened to you? When he first arrived in England he lived in Kent after that he moved to London, Manchester and then finally here to Bolton (He says Bolton is the best). He’s in year 10 and he aspires to go to Bolton School’s Sixth Form College to kick start his career in politics. The majority of his childhood wasn’t easy and there was a lot of pressure from the Taliban. "We learnt to fight, not write” but his father was different, and because he was a doctor he taught him how to use a pen not a gun. A couple of years later in 2003 a war starts and thousands of deaths later, the US and UK are still sending in troops which is making it worse for everyone. “One person with a gun is going to kill one person, but 100 people with guns are going to kill 100 people.” Gulwali saw 6 people die outside his own home. He’s not seen his family for 5 years now and all he wants to do is see his mum. It keeps him awake at night because he’s worried sick, can you imagine not seeing your family for 5 years, not knowing whether they’re alive, hurt or worse? Gulwali now goes to ESSA academy and after spending a year at Starting Point, a specialist school that helps young refugees like

Gulwali, he’s librarian, Deputy Head in his school council and the Schools ambassador. He wants to be head boy and personally I

think he would be great. He is the most inspirational people I’ve ever met. How can anyone watch six people get killed before their

very eyes, live without his mum for 5 years, cross 10 countries and survive to tell the story? We should all be grateful for what

we’ve got. His name is Gulwali Passarlay, he’s a refugee and he smiles more than me.

Jasmine Moore - Sub-Director, Ladybridge High Sports Mania

We also spoke to Janet Carter the organiser for the Human Book event.

“Refugee Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about refugees and to ‘put the record straight’ with accurate information and facts as opposed to what people think or are misled into believing. Bolton Libraries have, in the past, done events for Refugee Week but not with as much success as this one!

I think the Human Library idea is a really useful way of getting across a person’s story and experience in a relatively

short time and with the opportunity to interact with the ‘books’ e.g. ask questions, make comments etc. (Also you don’t have to be able to read!)

For this reason and the fact that a Human Library event can be done for a variety of promotions we’ll certainly be doing more in the future – already we’re thinking of organising one for next year’s World Book Day.”

Also Janet said the following about the team members who went to the event: It was really good meeting Saeed, Jasmine and Mithun – your maturity and caring natures were impressive. Your school and your parents should be proud of you!

So we’d like to say Thanks!

David Beckham, the LA Galaxy and England player was shown around the site by Seb Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organizing Com-

mittee.

Beckham played a high-profile role in the successful bid to bring the big games to London as an ambassador. He was part of the bidding

delegation which travelled to Singapore, and was also part of the London 2012 handover performance during the Beijing 2008 Olympic

Games Closing Ceremony.

David Beckham said of today’s visit: 'I think the Olympic Park is incredible and I am delighted that I have been involved from the very be-

ginning. The area I know so well is being transformed, the amazing dream is becoming a reality and I have seen first-hand how much hard

work has gone into the project. This is great for the East End and for sport.’

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: 'David has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the London 2012 family, playing a key role in the bid

and being part of our handover show in Beijing. I was delighted to be able to show him around the site, which of course is in a part of Lon-

don he knows well. His belief and support is well known and he was thrilled to see the progress being made.'

Every Xbox Live gamer is eager to own a brand new and exclusive Xbox 360. Microsoft have designed a more contemporary and advanced console which will enable gamers to play rapidly online. Unlike the old consoles, which make quite a lot of noise in game-play, the new console only gives off a tiny bit of sound, even when it is reading the disc. This is due to the fact that in the old version there was 2 small fans but in the new version there is only 1 big fan. For all you serious gamers, the new 360 doesn’t only have super-fast Wi-Fi but also has a massive hard drive to store all you game add-ons, pictures, videos, songs and more. But the new 250GB hard drive is not the only magnificent thing about the 360, the new console consists of 5 USB ports unlike the old version which only has 2. You can also buy a Kinect hub (Project Natal Hub as we like to call it) which allows you to experience game play with your hands. The hub reacts to your voice and hand commands, so if you said “Xbox, on” the console will turn on. Many people think this was a disaster but a lot believe this was a good idea. For more information on this topic visit www.xbox.com or visit your local game shop. What do YOU think about the new Xbox 360 and Kinect hub? Why not tell us what you think on the forum on our VLE page! Microsoft has officially announced the much awaited controller-free gaming device branded as Kinect. It has a

camera, audio sensors as well as motion-sensing technology capable of tracking 48 points of human body move-

ments. Microsoft has still kept the information on the price and the release date secret. Here are some games that

you can play via Kinect: Your Shape (Fitness Evolved) – Like Wii fit but controller less, Rock band 3 – Music game,

Guitar, drums, microphone etc. ,Kinectimals – Looking after animals.

Well in focus this issue… we’ve got some great NEW gadget reviews for you! We’ve got info on the new ultra-fast XBOX360 and also for the big one we’ve got info on the iPhone4 so get stuck in :]
