East Hills Boys Literacy Team

I would like to introduce our Literacy support team, led by our Strategic Adviser, Mr Martyn Bawden, with our Literacy specialist teachers: Vanessa Willmor, Rheema Ayoubi and Mona Hamed.

In 2017 we experienced significant growth in all NAPLAN areas. I credit this improvement to Mr Bawden’s implementation and leadership of the East Hills Boys High School Literacy Strategy and the efforts of all teachers across the school supporting this program by making Literacy a priority. We now look to build on the success of 2017 and further enhance the program during 2018.

Martyn Bawden Vanessa Willmore Rheema Ayoubi Mona Hamed

We have just heard the announcement that NAPLAN Year 9 tests will not be used as basis for pre-qualifying for the HSC any more, but that minimum standards will still need to be met. Our Literacy Strategy is supporting all boys to achieve their best and met these standards, please look out for more information regarding meeting minimum standards in the next newsletter.

Sharing the Curriculum

The great partnership between East Hills Boys High School and East Hills Girls Technology High School continues to grow. This was recognised in an article published recently on the Department of Education’s website highlighting best practice stories in NSW schools. I have reproduced it below in case you missed it.

East Hills Boys High School and East Hills Girls Technology High School have united to provide students with greater opportunities.

In 2017 the schools offered students courses that were not offered at their own school, for instance Year 11 girls studied Music, Engineering Studies and Sport, and Lifestyle and Recreation at the Boys High School, and boys went across to the Girls High School to study Software, Design and Development, Senior Science and Extension History.

In preparing for 2018, the timetabling teams worked closely together, and there will be ten subjects with combined classes this year.

Both schools were ranked in the top 200 schools based on the 2017 HSC top achievers list.

Making Learning Our Number One Priority

"The relationship fostered with East Hills Girls allows both schools to broaden their curriculum offerings and provides our boys with opportunities otherwise not available in a single setting," says Kevin Elgood, principal of East Hills Boys High School.

"As an example, the girls have been able to extend their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) opportunities, with a great uptake for Engineering Studies."

The principal of East Hills Girls Technology High School, Jennifer Hardwick, agrees: "Shared curriculum experience goes beyond opportunities for students, as teachers can also teach courses they want professional experience in that are not offered at their home school," she says.

I look forward to working with all students, staff and parents to ensure a great, inspiring and successful year ahead.

Mr Kevin Elgood Principal

P&C President’s Message

On behalf of the current P and C, I wish to extend an invitation to our whole school community, to join us at our first P and C meeting for 2018. The meeting will be held this coming Monday, 26th February 2018, at 6pm in the school café.

P and C meetings are a great way of staying in touch with what is happening at your son’s school and an opportunity to be actively involved in decisions that affect our boys.

This Monday’s meeting will be a general meeting where you have the opportunity to join the P and C before our next Annual General Meeting (AGM). Although you are eligible to join the P and C at any time throughout the year, joining before the AGM entitles you to be eligible to nominate and vote for office bearer positions at the AGM. (For your information, our next AGM is currently scheduled to be held Monday 26th March.) All that is required to join is your attendance and a gold coin donation.

We look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Jayden Gouganovski School Captain/SRC

Welcome back students, teachers and parents of East Hills Boys to 2018. My name is Jayden Gouganovski and I am the School Captain for this year. I’d like to formally welcome the arriving Year 7 students and parents to our school. I wish each and every one of you a good journey and nothing but the best in the next 6 years of your high school careers.

2018 is going to be an exciting yet challenging year for all students, in particular years 7 and 12. I understand high school may be an intimidating transition, however please don’t be afraid to come up to me, my fellow SRC members, or our wonderful teachers if you ever need advice or assistance.

As for the year 12 boys, it is our last year at this school and we look forward to working hard and achieving the best results we all possibly can. Study smart and focus throughout the year, I’m certain we will all do the best we can. This also applies to everyone else, and I know I look forward to getting through this year with the support of teachers and fellow peers.

2018 is going to be a massive year for all students. I wish good luck upon the students for 2018 and I am certain that this will be another delightful year of learning for East Hills Boys High School.

What an absolute amazing day – 6 local schools were invited to participate in a fun filled day, jam packed with various learning activities and experiences. With a massive 94 students turning up on the day, the boys had opportunities to build go-carts, program and create robots, rock out in the music room, explore and explode real brains and even act in their very own zombie apocalypse film.

After an intense day of Baking, building and bonding all of the students and staff had the opportunity to showcase their projects to Parents and friends who attended the afternoon.

A huge thank you to the following teachers who gave up lots of their time and effort to run the activities on the day, they are: Mr Lockeridge, Mrs Benz, Ms Neskovski, Mr Creighton, Mrs Purser, Mrs Tsavdaridis, Mr Navan, Mr Prentice, Ms Christenson, Ms Hassan and Mrs Collis.

Also a special thanks to all of the student volunteers who helped out either by teaching the boys about interesting science facts, icing as many cupcakes as possible, cooking the BBQ and in general assisting anyone who needed help.

It proved to be a very successful day, with all of the boys raving about each experience in which they participated. Can’t wait for Create and Conquer, which will be bigger and better in 2019!

Mr Suteski

A day of challenge

OUTSTANDING 2017 HSC PDHPE RESULTS

Thank you message from Jacky Trinh (2017) Hi Sir,

Just so you know you…………………made me realise that being lazy wasn't going to let me achieve anything. Picking PDHPE became one of the best decisions I've made and it was a contributing factor in helping me get the ATAR that allowed me to get into the course I wanted to study (and the ATAR my parents wanted me to get).

I want to thank you for everything you have done for the class of 2017. Your dedication and the support you have given us are truly inspiring, and I hope that you can continue to help students realise their potential.

All the best and thank you,

Jacky.

It is mandatory that all students get changed into the correct school sport uniform when participating in practical lessons. If your son is unable to participate in a practical lesson due to injury, then we require a note from home. If the injury is a long-term one then the school requires a doctor’s certificate. It’s also a school requirement that all students participating in practical lessons get changed back into their school uniform at the conclusion of a practical lesson. The only exception is when students have a practical lesson last period where they are permitted to leave school at the end of the day in their sports uniform.

SPORT UNIFORM – to be worn only during practical PE lessons and each Tuesday for Sport only

Shirt: Two-tone blue school sports polo shirt

Shorts: Navy school sport shorts

Shoes: White or black leather joggers

Socks: Short white socks

Jumper: School tracksuit jacket OR school jumper OR plain black jumper. NB no hoodies, stripes brand logos, etc, are

to be worn

Tracksuit Pants: School tracksuit pants or plain black with no stripes or brand logos

Tracksuit: School tracksuit available from Lowes at Centro Bankstown.

Course Requirements It is important to start the year fully prepared for learning and active engagement in all aspects of each course. Individual courses within the TAS faculty have their own requirements in terms of books and equipment. Class teachers will have already outlined these requirements in class. Please endeavour to purchase books, folders etc. as soon as possible.

For ALL practical courses it is a mandatory Work Health and Safety requirement that all students are properly attired. This includes fully enclosed leather shoes (including Tuesday) and an apron or high visibility shirt (Years 9-12). Students who do not meet these basic requirements will not be permitted to participate in practical activities. This will impact on their ability to achieve course outcomes. Please check that your son has all necessary equipment and packs it in his bag regularly for school.

TAS Faculty Course Costs. Each course within the TAS faculty also attracts a course contribution. Course contributions cover the costs of materials and consumables used during the construction of practical projects. As a faculty we strive to keep these costs to a minimum whilst still providing worthwhile and engaging learning experiences for our students. We request that course contributions are paid by the end of Term 1.

Families requiring additional time or financial assistance to meet these costs should contact the Principal or Deputy Principal to apply for Student Assistance. The following table outlines course costs for individual TAS subjects.

Making Learning Our Number One Priority

My first week at East Hills Boys was one of the most fun weeks. I was very nervous but after 2 days I was feeling like I have been here forever. The teachers and students made me feel

like I was in paradise. Chris 7R

These first few weeks at high school has been challenging, although I do find it better than primary school. I like it better because in primary school you have one teacher that covers

all subjects. However in high school, you have so many teachers that have skills and passion with what subject they teach.

Mohamed H 7L

My first week at East Hills Boys High School has been a blast, honestly. The teachers are funny and teach in their own special, unique way. I have already made many new friends at high school. The transition week was also really good. I needed that boost to get to know everyone. I’m starting to know my way around the school and I hope I don’t regret this.

Anish 7L

High school. The most amazing experience I have ever been through. The teachers explain everything very thoroughly and teach interactively. Our Science teacher is one of the best due to his very fun experiments. Even his theory lessons are fun. The school has many places eligible to play in and many people are very friendly. One thing I’m really looking forward to is camp, which will hopefully be awesome and interactive.

Ayaan 7N

In the first week of Year 7 I felt welcomed by all the teachers and Year 11 and 12 students. It was excellent because the Year 11’s took us for a walk and informed us for what subjects we

would have in which block.

Morgan 7L

Everything has been amazing so far. I have met these amazing teachers. Some of them even let me read this book called ‘For the Love of Football: The Companion’. I also look forward to camp and the Swimming Carnival. Another good thing is that I have become the best dodge

shooter in handball.

Dinh, 7N

This week has been a great week for education. It was fun learning and getting to know people. Now I know most of the blocks in the school. There is lots of homework but it is fun to do. We have done many things like playing sports on Tuesday and playing handball with my mates. Writing a mystery story has been fun and Food Tech, History, Music and Maths

has been exciting. For me, I like English.

Harjapan 7L

My first week at school was scary but after a while, it was fun because I made some friends. My favourite class is Maths and Science because they make it fun to learn. I met and played with lots of people. I was nervous changing schools but when I went to East Hills Boys, I was

excited to go there again. Farouk 7R

So far, my favourite part of Year 7 is all the teachers, peoples and students. Number 2 is the classes and subjects. The things the teachers are teaching really helps me become a better

person. Last but not least, the basketball court! I also love PDHPE.

Albert 7N

On my first week of high school, I was a bit nervous. The reason why I was nervous was

because I was scared that I wouldn’t meet any new friends, but when I got into the school, I was very welcomed. I found about 15 new friends and they were very kind. My favourite

subjects are PE, Science, Music and English. The reason why I like these subjects is because they are very interesting and I have the best teachers.

Year 7 Advisor

Well what a month it has been, so much has happened!

if they were truly lost found me.

Year 7 began their exciting transition into high school with an Orientation week, ran by the HT of Welfare Mr Stefanis. Helping the Year 7 students everyday were a group of fabulous Year 11 Peer Support boys. I cannot thank them enough for their support and mentorship to the Year 7 students.

The first day of formal classes began the following week and the Year 7 students were in shock! Many times, I explained to boys ‘Yes you have more than one teacher, and you do not have one classroom either”. However, the boys showed their true colours and helped each other get from class to class, and

We have only had a chance to play sport on a Tuesday twice so far, but it has been eye opening. I have never seen so many passionate and competitive young men. Between Oz tag, soccer and handball there have been some serious games played.

In my own classes I have experienced how bright and creative these Year 7 students are. Having conversations about not only how symbols communicate with us, but also how artworks have hidden meanings like Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper”, I would have to say I was blown away by this.

Coming up we have the Year 7 Camp at the Outdoor Education Centre in Wyee. I am super excited not only for the camp, but also to get to know all the students more and learn all about them. The camp will begin on Wednesday 28.02.2018; we will be departing school by bus at 9am heading up the coast to Wyee. The camp our will end on 02.03.18; we be arriving back at school at approximately 3pm. During the camp, the students will participate in a range of activities from canoeing, archery, mud challenges, high ropes and more. I cannot wait for the next newsletter to show all the adventures had.

Creative and Performing Arts

VISUAL ARTS - LETS CREATE!!!

Year 7 have begun to explore the elements of Art, what is Visual Arts and how do we visually communicate. They will engage in various artmaking activities, such as mixing and understanding colour and the use of tone to design their own Logo designs.

Year 8 are looking at the different types of water. Through the exploration of Onomatopoeia and words of water, the boys will be creating colourful lino prints, which will require their imaginations to flow.

Year 9 students are working through an exploration of Chaos and Disorder, whilst learning to represent order in still life drawing. To see the chaos simply come into one of their wonderful art lessons!

Year 10 are unpacking contemporary forms of visual communication. Psychology in art! How is it that an image can speak to us? The boys will design their way through packages of everyday objects to create a masterpiece.

Year 11 have stepped into senior schooling and learning the Key Content of Art. They will have a jam-packed term of exploration of mediums and materials to uncover their potential.

Music – ROCK N ROLL… Mr Navan and our new addition to the Creative Arts family Mr Prentice are blazing into the Music programs. Once again, the exciting Musical tuition is on offer to all students at East Hills Boys. These lessons are with specialised music tutors, who are experts on their instrument. Students have the opportunity to learn and improve practical skills on either guitar, drums, bass, piano or voice. Lessons are $130 per term, which consists of 8 lessons. Students are encouraged to get involved regardless of ability. For more info, come and visit us in the CAPA staffroom.

Drama – What is happening? Year 9 Drama has started with a few laughs and many physical activities to get our brains firing. We are working on improvisation and have really gelled well as a class. Year 11 Drama has begun as a new adventure across the road at East Hills Girls High. The seniors are very excited to start their journey towards their HSC with such supportive and talented classmates.

Achievements in CAPA

We achieved some of the best ever results this year in both Music and Visual Arts. Zachary Chong attained a band 6 in Music 2 with a nomination into ENCORE. Zach achieved fantastic results across all subjects; however, we are extremely proud of Zach’s efforts and fantastic performances over the years.

Alvin Do was another successful student in 2017. His HSC Visual Arts Major Work was selected for Art Express, and his work is now being displayed at three Galleries around New South Wales.

Making Learning Our Number One Priority

It’s the morning of the 21st of February, there’s an air of anticipation as 60 art students from Yr 11 and 12 prepare to board a bus that will take them to the Art Gallery of NSW. The Gallery is hosting an exhibition of 2017 band 6 art major works as well as a presentation of three ex-HSC students who each gave a short speech on their major work, the creative process and provided the students with valuable advice for their own HSC works.

The bus ride to the gallery was long and uneventful, and we soon found ourselves at the gallery, preparing to go in. Turns out we were a few minutes late for the presentation, and we hastily settled into the hall where the presentation was ongoing.

A lady introduced the exhibition and explained the system of ArtEXPRESS, she then introduced the three guest speakers; Mia McKelvey, Ellora Srivastava and Amelia Turner.

Each artist went through their Major Works, explaining the concepts, the materials used, their own connection to the works and how they developed them. They also showed their process diaries and explained their ideas and how they all connected. Each speaker ended by giving advice for the students such as; not overworking, writing and putting all thoughts and processes into our VAPDs.

After the speeches, there was a short Q&A session and then there was a lunch break spent at Hyde Park. Afterwards we returned to the gallery to explore the gallery and fill out a worksheet concerning some of the exhibits.

The event came to a finish at 1:30 and we returned to school via bus once more.

Musical Instrument Tuition

East Hills Boys High School offers students the opportunity to learn an instrument as part of their involvement in extra-curricular activities. Due to the overwhelming student interest in performance and their desire in developing skills on various instruments, small group classes are available for tuition in the following instruments: voice, piano, guitar, bass guitar and drums.

As part of all tuition programs students are expected to attend a group tutorial once a week at a designated time. Morning classes begin at 8am. Once a student is enrolled a tutorial timetable is allocated to them for the term. It is essential that participants attend every lesson and practice regularly outside of their tutorial time. Students will be able to use the instruments and resources provided by the school, however, they are encouraged to purchase an instrument of their own. Alternatively, some instruments can be hired on a term- by-term basis from the school.

As part of all tuition programs students not only have access to instruments and highly qualified teachers but they are also targeted for special opportunities that broaden their understanding of music. These opportunities can include excursions to the Sydney Opera House and the Seymour Centre. Students may also be invited to perform at school events to further develop their performance experience and confidence.

It has been a very exciting and fun start to the year in Science. Students have been busy settling in and beginning their 2018 practical journey. Year 7 students have been especially excited and eager to learn about all the scientific equipment they will be using and beginning to carry out their own investigations. Students from 7A were very enthusiastic about lighting their Bunsen burners for the first time to become familiar with how it works and the different flames it produces (pictured). It was pleasing to see them carrying out the investigation safely and using their observational skills.

The Create and Conquer – A day of challenge program was a huge success in Science. The Science Club boys ran activities for the Year 5 Students. These included, looking at chemicals that glow, making slime, making volcanoes, and brain dissections.

A big thanks to all the boys involved, they did an amazing job: Francesco Donatiello, Arpit Verma, Timothy Tea, Daniel Hamilton-Smith, Zorian Chowdhury, Omar Mohamed, Noah Hamodeh, Youssef Sadek and Ahmad Hussein, Elias Abdoh, Adam El-Sayed and Ziad Ayad.

If students are interested in taking part in a Chemistry competition, they can see Mrs George in the Science staff room for more details.

Year 10 will be given the opportunity to participate in a forensic science practical workshop later in the year on August 22nd. This should be a very engaging activity for the students, giving them a chance to explore science in a way that is not possible in a normal classroom. More details will be available closer to the date.

All of our year 7 and 8 students now have access to the Education Perfect program. Teachers will be using this online resource to set class tasks, homework and assessment tasks. Year 8 will be completing an online test via this program as their first formal assessment for the year. This program also offers different challenges throughout the year for the students and prizes such as pizza parties and devices can be won by participating students who answer most questions correctly. Teachers will be encouraging the participation of students in these events and once they know their log in details, it can also be accessed from home as well as at school.

We look forward to the rest of the year and sharing more exciting and engaging activities with our students.

Take your holidays when we do!

Parents, students and teachers are concerned when students fall behind in their studies because of long absences. Families who plan to travel are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If you require to take your child out of school during term time, please make an appointment to discuss your plans with the Principal or Deputy Principal before booking flights or accommodation as you may be asked to cancel

them if this brings your child’s attendance under 85%. The Principal has information to assist families to plan holidays that are least disruptive to their children’s schooling.
