Child Safety at Parkhill Primary School

The Victorian Parliament’s Betrayal of Trust inquiry led to the development of seven child safe standards which aim to embed a culture of child safety in all organisations providing services to children. Last year the Education sub-committee developed our Child Safe policy which was then endorsed by the Parkhill Primary School Council. The Child Safe policy is reviewed annually and complements many other existing policies designed to enhance the safety of our students in a range of contexts. Further information regarding the Child Safe standards can be accessed at http://www.vrqa.vic.gov.au/childsafe/Pages/default.html

I was waiting for something to come from left field and I wasn’t disappointed! Due to works carried out at the school over the weekend, our phone lines were cut, resulting in all external calls being cut off. As Elaine Brady explained in her letter earlier this week all correspondence to the school should be via email, Tiqbiz or the school mobile on 0439 39 45 41 until further notice. We are doing all we can to get the lines re connected but in the meantime I thank you for your understanding and patience.

This will be my final newsletter for the term, as I will be taking leave from next week, I wish you all a successful end to the term and a safe and relaxing holiday in a few weeks’ time. Elaine Brady will be covering for me until l return at the start of Term 2.

Have a great weekend.

BE A PARKHILL RISK TAKER!!! Over the last week we have been learning about what it means to take a risk. The PYP endeavours to develop positive attributes within our students. These are called Learner Profile attributes. The Learner Profile attribute we have been focussing on across the school is RISK TAKER! At Parkhill a ‘Risk Taker’ is someone who lives by the following:

I am brave and try new things that challenge me.

I can work by myself and with others to overcome challenges.

Mistakes are a part of learning.

Year Four Excursion to IMAX and the Melbourne Museum

The seats seemed to shake as the volcano erupted on the big screen in front of the Year 4 students, with pop-corn-like clouds of ash and massive bolts of lightning. The students looked on at the The Forces of Nature mov-ie at IMAX, awe-struck - it made us feel like we were witnessing the Natural Disasters first-hand! The students learned about Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquakes and Tornadoes, and how scientists are studying them to create better warning systems.

We also visited the Museum to visit the Dynamic Earth Exhibition where the highlights were interactive models and a 3D experience showing how the Earth was created and how volcanoes work.

Throughout the day we saw lots of students make links with what they have been learning in class in our Natural Hazards Inquiry Unit. What a fantastic day!

“It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish”, wise words and one of the first lessons I can ever remember my mentor teaching me. The rest of the conversation, over breakfast one frosty July morning has been lost but that nugget of wisdom has stayed with me. We can’t change the past, how or where we started out in life, the things that have hap-pened to us, the good or bad decisions we have made. But we can make a choice about the here and now. We may have been saddled with a label such as lazy, incompetent or stupid but doesn’t mean it has to follow us for life, or define who we are. It is just as true for our children as it is for us grownups and this can be refreshing news espe-cially if they are struggling with aspects of everyday life, such as friendships or school work, and even how they see themselves. They may find subjects difficult or making friends hard work but it’s im-portant for them to understand they haven’t reached the end of their journey yet. They might not know how to do those tricky problems in maths. But we can help reframe the way they think by reminding them that they don’t know how to do them YET. In school speak we call that having a growth mindset which is where “people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work” rather than being set or fixed. If you are interested you can find out more about it online. This 10 minute TED talk by Carol Dweck on the subject is well worth a watch: https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve So next time you or the kids come up against a seemingly insurmount-able problem, remember you/they just don’t know how to solve it YET, persevere, learn some new skills, keep going and eventually you/they will work it out and finish well.

"Our very own Parkhill Primary Parents' Choir performed at Party On Power on Sunday, 5th March at Holmesglen Reserve in Chad-stone. The choir entertained the enthusiastic crowd with a half hour bracket of popular songs with Rosie Pryor leading from the keyboard. Formed 9 years ago, the choir rehearses Friday mornings on the stage and new members are always welcome."

Interview with a teacher—Elizabeth Nevill 1. Tell us about your experiences in 2016. I spent 2016 travelling around Asia and Europe. I had so many wonderful experiences and got to see some pretty amazing places. Some of my highlights were: Hot air ballooning in Bagan, Myanmar Learning to cook Thai food in Chiang Mai Visiting Disneyland in Hong Kong Riding in a Gondola in Venice, Italy Climbing the Great Wall of China 2. What year do you teach and what is interesting about that year level? In 2017, I am teaching Year 4 for the first time. It is so wonderful to see the academic and personal growth in my students, many of whom I had taught or known as Foundation students. The most in-teresting part of Year 4 is seeing the students rise to new and challenging expectations and taking more responsibility for their own learning. 3. What subject do you enjoy teaching the most and why? I love teaching all subjects but Writing is my favourite because it is so individual. Everyone in the class could be working on the same writing piece but each one would be different because each student draws on their own ideas and personality. I work with students to help them express themselves bet-ter through their writing, which means working on different skills with each student. I also get to read their amazing work which I really enjoy! 4. What is one memorable moment you've had at Parkhill? There have been so many memorable moments but I think my favourite would have to be the Puffing Billy excursion in Foundation. Puffing Billy is just as exciting for adults as it is for kids! 5. What are your interests outside of teaching? I love to travel and I enjoy cooking and spending time outdoors.
