A perfect gift for all who love Israel!
No true Christian would think to see somethingdifferent in Christmas than the celebration ofthe birth of Jesus Christ. On the contrary, in the
celebration of Christmas we hear about Jesus’ greatvictory over pagan cults, which He has displaced. Forinstance, the Christmas observance has led to thedisplacement of the Roman pagan “Solstice.” Thecoming of Jesus reminds us that He broke the powerof Satan and paganism. Whereas in earlier timesidols and pagan altars were worshiped, Christ willbe remembered today.

In Israel, the New Year is celebrated in the fall, atthe beginning of the seventh month. This tradition is rooted in Leviticus 23:24. It doesn’t actually say
there, that this day is the beginning of a new year. It is a mysterious day ofsacred assembly, rest and trumpet blasts, without any further explanationas to its deeper meaning. That’s the reason why the Jews began to celebratethis as their New Year’s Day, after the destruction of the temple. It gave thatday a meaning. This particular month is called the “seventh month” in theBible. The beginning of the year is actually in the spring, but it’s not a bibli-cal holiday.
The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) occurs on the tenth day of the sev-enth month, and is the most important festival day of the seven annual fes-tivals that God decreed for the Jewish people. On that day, once per year, the high priest went into the Most Holy Place with the blood of a goat tomake atonement for the entire people.
This frequently gives rise to the question as to how modern Jews achievetheir atonement and forgiveness for sins, as there is no longer a temple andno more sacrifices are offered. In this context, we have to consider thewords of Hebrews 10:4, “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats totake away sins.”
It’s indicative that the word “Kippur” or “Kappara” doesn’t even mean“forgive” or “take away,” but rather “cover.” Thus, the Old Testament sac-rifices had only a symbolic meaning that pointed to a coming sacrifice thatwould truly forgive and take away their sins. They were symbols of the ab-solute sacrifice that Jesus Himself brought (see Mark 2:1-11). Before the ab-solute sacrifice came, sins were only symbolically covered by the blood of

the sacrificial animals. They remained under God’s grace and forbearance until Jesuscame to truly forgive the sins.
The recognition that sinful man needs the grace of God is demonstrated through-out the Old Testament, from near the beginning of the Bible (see Genesis 4:4; 6:8).The Jews recognized this as well, so after the temple was destroyed, they began to usethe ten days between the day of trumpet blasts and Yom Kippur as a time of atone-ment, during which they bow before God, confess their sins, and pray that He willshow them grace and mercy.
In looking at the sacrificial rites described in Leviticus chapters 1—9, it’s worthmentioning that there was no sacrifice for conscious sin. In Leviticus 4:2 it’s written,“When anyone sins unintentionally…”
In practice, that doesn’t mean that someone can just sin throughout the whole yearand violate God’s commands, because their sins will automatically be forgiven onYom Kippur—which is often the case with confession in the Roman CatholicChurch.
God is above all a gracious and compassionate God. This was how He introducedHimself to Moses, when He proclaimed His name, “The LORD, the LORD, thecompassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet hedoes not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children forthe sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation” (Exodus 34:6-7).
In the people of Israel, we see that God was always gracious to them. We can alsosee the tragic side of this godly statement in the people of Israel; in the end, God pun-ished the descendants for the sins of their fathers.
This godly truth did not just apply to the people of the Old Covenant, but it appliesto the people of the New Covenant as well. God isn’t a God of cheap grace in theNew Testament, either, although He is often characterized that way. That is the mes-sage of Hebrews 10:26-31. When we purposely sin, after we know the truth andknow that it’s wrong, we can no longer expect God to redeem us by grace.
The knowledge of the eternally valid sacrifice, with which our Lord Jesus Christmade us holy by atoning for our sins, should motivate us every day to be willinglyobedient to Him purely out of love for what He did.
With inexpressible thanks for His gift,Shalom,

After Saul from the tribe ofBenjamin was anointed to bethe first king of Israel, he stilldid not manage to unite thetwelve tribes to be a kingdom.Only in times of war did theyunite, but otherwise they wererelatively autonomous. ThenSaul made a grave mistake. Hebroke God’s commandmentand offered burnt offerings, although this was somethingthat only the Levites wereallowed to do (Numbers 1:50,53; 2 Chronicles 13:10;Numbers 4:15; Jeremiah33:18).Samuel was a Levite, but
Saul was a Benjaminite, andthus not legitimated to bringburnt offerings. Moreover,Saul’s behavior was wrong in
not asking for God’s will at themost important moment, butdeciding for himself.“And he tarried seven days,
according to the set time thatSamuel had appointed: butSamuel came not to Gilgal; andthe people were scattered fromhim. And Saul said, Bring hith-er a burnt offering to me, andpeace offerings. And he offeredthe burnt offering. And it cameto pass, that as soon as he hadmade an end of offering theburnt offering, behold, Samuelcame; and Saul went out tomeet him, that he might salutehim. And Samuel said, Whathast thou done? And Saul said,Because I saw that the peoplewere scattered from me, andthat thou camest not within thedays appointed, and that thePhilistines gathered themselvestogether at Michmash; Thereforesaid I, The Philistines will comedown now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplica-

tion unto the Lord: I forcedmyself therefore, and offered aburnt offering. And Samuelsaid to Saul, Thou hast donefoolishly: thou hast not keptthe commandment of the Lordthy God, which he commandedthee: for now would the Lordhave established thy kingdomupon Israel for ever. But nowthy kingdom shall not contin-ue: the Lord hath sought him aman after his own heart, andthe Lord hath commanded himto be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept thatwhich the Lord commandedthee” (1 Samuel 13:8-14).This event should show us
that we cannot take God andHis commandments lightly. Wemust take God seriously andseek to be near Him.Obedience to God is alwaysmore important than any tradi-tional works. “And Samuel
said, Hath the Lord as greatdelight in burnt offerings andsacrifices, as in obeying thevoice of the Lord? Behold, toobey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat oframs” (1 Samuel 15:22). “And to love him with all
the heart, and with all theunderstanding, and with all thesoul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour ashimself, is more than all wholeburnt offerings and sacrifices”(Mark 12:33; cf. Proverbs21:3; Jeremiah 7:23; Hosea6:6).Through this mistake, Saul
and his seed lost the kingship.

By the way, this is a clearhint that the promisedMessiah can never comefrom the tribe of Benjamin.Saul made further mistakes,so that ultimately the crownwas taken from him. Godregretted having Saul madeking (cf. Hosea 13:9-11), andso David was anointed kingover Israel. David grew intoan efficient and courageoussoldier, who quickly attract-ed attention. After harmonyat first, Saul was filled withenvy and he sought the life ofDavid. David must neverbecome king of Israel underany circumstances. Onceagain, Satan became activeand used Saul and his adher-

Saul ult-mately took his own life, when he was wounded in thebattle with the Philistines. But David was not yet kingover all Israel, but only overJudah with the capitalHebron (2 Samuel 2:1-11). Shalom Dear Friends,
As we continue to serve the Lord at
the Ebenezer Home with all its chal-
lenges and joys, we see more and
more how true and relevant this
Scripture verse is. Daily we need to
run to the Lord to find shelter,
strength and peace in His presence.
In recent months, two of our staff
members have been diagnosed with
cancer: Niveen, a kitchen worker, had
a complicated head surgery and has
been undergoing rigorous treatment
for the past several months. Regina,
our social worker, who has been with
us for 21 years, started treatment re-
cently. Our doctor fell off her bike and
broke her shoulder, and several other
staff members have been suffering
from injuries as well and must work
limited hours. All this has come at a
time when we are short on volun-
teers!
Several of our residents are also
suffering from difficult ailments. We
daily bring these dear ones in prayer
before the throne of grace, and ask
that you join us in intercession. The
Lord is faithful in answering our
cries. Two of our residents have im-
proved dramatically: “A.” had suffered
a stroke and has a problem with her
eyesight. Several months ago, she
started seeing much better, recogniz-
ing people and being able to talk and
eat by herself. “E.” has been static as a
nursing case for nearly two years. We
thank the Lord that recently, she be-
came more articulate with her voice
and is now able to hold a spoon and
eat!
In February, the Home received
two new residents—Juan from Tel Aviv
and Maggie from Haifa. Maggie’s
room is across the corridor from her
friend of many years, Naomi. Both

our activity room—Juan on his drawings,
and Maggie on rug weaving. Our website
features posts on both Maggie and Juan
in the “Our Heartbeat” section, as well as
posts and pictures about other events
and news (www.ebenezer.co.il).
Our annual residents’ trip on July 6th
was to the Utopia orchid park. Even
though there are many different flowers
and plants in the park, the highlight of it
is 19,000 beautiful orchids that grow on
tree branches, among stones and in vases
all over the park. The residents heard a
short lecture on caring for orchids, and
went around the park enjoying its beauty.
We ended our time there with an excel-
lent lunch and a time of fellowship with
each other. Everyone slept well after be-
ing in the fresh air! Read the full post
about our trip in the “Our Heartbeat” sec-
tion of the website, with many pictures.
Since the beginning of the year, we
have said goodbye to three wonderful
volunteers: Marie from Norway, Emmy
from the Netherlands, and Bella from
Germany.
Bella, the youngest, chose to volunteer
at Ebenezer before starting college in the
fall. We are grateful to God for the great
help she was. Even when off duty, she
was constantly busy helping others with
unlimited patience and love for all. She
always had a friendly smile on her face,
and was always ready to serve and go the
extra mile. One of the things she said
about the Home is that it is a place to
grow. It always encourages us to know
that those who come to give also receive!

The Spirit of Cain
!
What is the spirit thatinfluences us? The spiritof Cain or the Spirit ofGod?
In Genesis 4:9 it says ofCain, “And the Lordsaid unto Cain, where is
Abel thy brother? And hesaid, I know not: am I mybrother’s keeper?” On theother hand, the apostle Paulemphasizes, “Look notevery man on his ownthings, but every man alsoon the things of others”(Philippians 2:4).Cain was heartless
because he was godless. The Bible says that he was“of that wicked one” (1John 3:12), and because ofthis he killed his brother.Cain only saw himself andwas envious of his brother.
So he committed fratricide. On the other hand, who-
ever is united with Godshows himself to be merci-ful. Compassionate peopleopen their hearts to the trou-bles of others and acceptthem. The Bible tells us thatGod is the father of mercy,“Blessed be God, even theFather of our Lord JesusChrist, the father of mercies, and the God of all comfort”(2 Corinthians 1:3). Thus, compassion is somethingthat we as born-againChristians should have as amatter of course. God is thefather of mercies, so weshould be the children ofmercy. Our lives should bemarked by mercy if we con-sider ourselves to be gen-uine children of God.Compassion is therefore not

merely a virtue which comesfrom a good will, for the worldcan also do this. No, mercy isfor the Christian somethinginnate. It is something born in aChristian which the Holy Spirithas put in him. Therefore, itmust be visible; it must be lived.Unfortunately, within Chris-
tianity, it is rather the case thatthe goal is to be destructive, critical, and condemning.Church discipline also belongsto mercy, but always with theaim to reconcile and reintegrate.Kurt Marti once put it as fol-
lows: “We often only see themistakes and not the trouble inthe background. We see the addiction and not
the longing.
We see the negative and notthe desire for change. We are fault-finding and not
love-oriented.”In his letter to Philemon, we
see how Paul as “paraclete”(comforter, advocate) pleadedfor the insignificant slaveOnesimus and stood up for him.Paul adopts the position of asubstitute, “If thou count metherefore a partner, receive himas myself. If he hath wrongedthee, or oweth thee ought, putthat on mine account”(Philemon 17-18). This is theright attitude. Are we influenced by the
spirit of Cain or the Spirit ofGod?(MR0717/890)

The Glorious Futureof Jewish Israel
We read the heavenly declaration,“And one of the elders saith unto
me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of thetribe of Judah, the Root of David, hathprevailed to open the book, and toloose the seven seals thereof”(Revelation 5:5). Way back in Genesis,Jacob prophesies regarding Judah,“The sceptre shall not depart fromJudah, nor a lawgiver from between hisfeet, until Shiloh come; and unto himshall the gathering of the people be”(Genesis 49:10). That should suffice todetermine that the definition “Jew”means descendants of the tribe ofJudah; hence, they are called “Jews.”

MIDNIGHT CALL
Christians are connected to Jerusalem.
The apostle Paul, inspired by the
Holy Spirit, emphasizes the difference be-
tween the earthly Jerusalem and the heav-
enly; one is under the law, and the other
under the Spirit. He strongly warns against
the Judaizers, who attempt to lead believ-
ers back under the burden of the law. In
verse 21, he challenges them: “Tell me, ye
that desire to be under the law, do ye not
hear the law?” He then explains the differ-
ence between Abraham’s two sons: one
born of the flesh, that is, under the bond-
woman, and “the other by a free woman.”
He concludes in verse 31: “So then,
brethren, we are not children of the bond-
woman, but of the free.”
What is freedom? It’s not what we are
being taught by our educators and politi-
cians. True freedom means being loosed
from the things of this world. We, by far
overestimate our presence on earth with
our family, relatives, friends, and nation,
and vastly underestimate the reality of the
heavenly—that is, the world yet to come.
Jerusalem above is what counts.
While Jesus was on earth, He actually
nullified the importance of our family—our
most precious treasure here on earth in the
flesh. We read in Matthew 12:47: “Then
one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and
thy brethren stand without, desiring to
speak with thee.” How does Jesus answer?
“And he stretched forth his hand toward
his disciples, and said, Behold my mother
and my brethren! For whosoever shall do
the will of my Father which is in heaven,
the same is my brother, and sister, and
mother” (verses 49-50). With this state-
ment, He dissolves our concept of family
on earth and opens the vision of the heav-
enly family.
World Center Jerusalem
The earthly reality of the city of Jerusalem
plays an important role in God’s eternal
plan of salvation. From the prophet
Zechariah (519 BC), we learn of the return
of the Lord to Jerusalem: “Thus saith the
Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will
dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and
Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth;
BY ARNO FROESE
“But Jerusalem which is aboveis free, which is the mother of usall” (Galatians 4:26).
and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the
holy mountain” (Zechariah 8:3). While this
can be applied to the second temple com-
pleted in 515 BC, when reading the entire
chapter, it becomes evident that this
prophecy is beyond the second temple. The
last verse states: “Thus saith the Lord of
hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that
ten men shall take hold out of all languages
of the nations, even shall take hold of the
skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go
with you: for we have heard that God is with
you” (verse 23). That has not been fulfilled.
Rather, the opposite happened during the
last two and a half thousand years; namely,
the extreme persecution of the Jewish people
throughout the world.
Later, in chapter 12, we read something
that is fittingly spoken for our days: “Behold,
I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling
unto all the people round about, when they
shall be in the siege both against Judah and
against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make
Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people:
all that burden themselves with it shall be cut
in pieces, though all the people of the earth
be gathered together against it” (verses 2-3).
Virtually no one burdened themselves
with Jerusalem in the past, whether it was
100, 500, 1000, or 2000 years ago. The world
was definitely not involved with Jerusalem.
Everything changed when the Jews re-
turned to the land of Israel and declared the
Jewish state in May of 1948. From that point
on, the world at large recognized that
Jerusalem is indeed a burdensome stone.
Wikipedia writes: “There is significant dis-
agreement in the international community
on the legal and diplomatic status of
Jerusalem. Legal scholars disagree on how to
resolve the dispute under international law.
Many United Nations (UN) member states
formally adhere to the United Nations pro-
posal that Jerusalem should have an interna-
tional status.” That is unprecedented;
international law, in the event of war, allows
for “winner takes all.” There is an abundance
of documentation available detailing the es-
tablishment of virtually any and all countries
of the world by force.
Here we see Jerusalem is different; it’s the
only city in the world that God had chosen
for His residence. That is key and what we
must keep mind. It’s not what the nations do
or don’t do; what God has caused to be writ-
ten by His prophets—that is decisive.
The USA and Jerusalem
For a number of decades now, particularly
since the Six-Day-War in June of 1967, there
is a degree of involvement by the United
States of America. Here is what Wikipedia
Israel
MIDNIGHT CALL
writes: “The U.S. opposed Israel’s moving its
capital from Tel Aviv to West Jerusalem fol-
lowing Israel’s declaration of Jerusalem as its
capital in 1949…The U.S. opposed Israel’s
annexation of East Jerusalem after the 1967
war. The United States has proposed that the
future of Jerusalem should be the subject of a
negotiated settlement. Subsequent adminis-
trations have maintained the same policy
that Jerusalem’s future not be the subject of
unilateral actions that could prejudice nego-
tiations such as moving the U.S. Embassy
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.”
Muslims, the Church
and Jerusalem
Jerusalem’s most recognized symbol is the
gold-plated Dome of the Rock on the Temple
Mount. That building and the nearby
mosque is neither Jewish nor Christian, but
Muslim. The Dome of the Rock was con-
structed and completed in about 691 AD.
History records that the second Jewish tem-
ple was destroyed in 70 AD, and in 135 AD,
the Roman Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus
was erected.
During the Byzantine Empire, the
Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built in
330 AD by Constantine. It was in 1099 AD
when the Crusaders captured Jerusalem,
and the Dome of the Rock was turned into a
church; the nearby Al Aqsa Mosque became
a royal palace.
The church, under the dominion of the
Vatican, highlighted the Holy Sepulcher and
neglected the significance of the Temple
Mount.
A recent article by German broadcaster
DW reports on an amazing discovery, indi-
cating the location of a church that existed
1,500 years ago in Jerusalem.
A sixth-century mosaic floor contain-
ing a Greek inscription has been
uncovered in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Dubbed an “archaeological miracle,”
the rare find sheds light on Jerusalem’s
largest Christian church at the time.
A mosaic floor bearing the names
of Byzantine Emperor Justinian and
senior Orthodox priest Constantine
has been found near the Damascus
Gate in Jerusalem, the Israel
Antiquities Authority announced.
The inscription reads, “The most
pious Roman emperor Flavius
Justinian and the most God-loving
priest and abbot, Constantine, erect-
ed the building in which this (this
mosaic) sat during the 14th indic-
tion.”
Used for taxation purposes, indic-
tion was an ancient method of
counting years, which allowed the
archaeologists to date the inscription
to the mid-sixth century.
Justinian, an important ruler dur-
ing the Byzantine era in the Roman
Empire, established the Nea Church
in Jerusalem in AD 543, in which the
mosaic was found and where
Constantine was an abbot. It was one
of the largest Christian churches in
the eastern Roman Empire and also
the largest in Jerusalem at the time.
The area where the mosaic was
uncovered, near the Damascus Gate
in east Jerusalem, is now the main
entryway to the Old City’s Muslim
Quarter. During the Six-Day War in
1967, Israel annexed that territory in
a move that has since not been rec-
ognized by the international com-
munity.

With this latest discovery, Churchianity
(Christendom) stakes its claim on part of
Jerusalem, thus making the Jerusalem is-
sue even more complex. This development,
and many yet to come, confirms the previ-
ously stated verse, which we repeat to con-
clude this article: “And in that day will I
make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all
people: all that burden themselves with it
shall be cut in pieces, though all the people
of the earth be gathered together against it”

Why do more and more nations recognize Arab-Palestine? Answer: to fulfill Bibleprophecy, for all nations of the worldwill eventually lift their heel againstthe Jewish state of Israel. 6604(For more on this subject, read Target Israel,

SynagogueMembership atAll-time Low
The UK is now home to thelargest number of synagoguesever recorded in the country, but membership is at an all-time low, according to a report[by] the Institute of Jewish Pol-icy Research and the Board ofDeputies of British Jews.
The report found that despitethe 454 synagogues that now
exist in the UK, the number of householdmemberships in them has dropped below80,000.In 2016, 79,597 Jewish households
across the United Kingdom held synagoguememberships in 2016, down from 99,763in 1990, a 20% decline over a quarter ofa century. The largest denominational group
remains “central Orthodox”—an amalga-mation of synagogues affiliated with theUnited Synagogue, the Federation of Syn-agogues and other independent ModernOrthodox synagogues—yet its share oftotal membership has dropped to 53%,down from 66% in 1990.

“We’re all facing this challengeof innovate or die,” said Reggie

population will be 75 mil-lion and comprise abouthalf of the internationalworkforce, 70 million ofwhich will be GenerationZ members graduatingfrom universities, Bradfordsaid. Meanwhile, at thatpoint, there will be some20-30 billion Internet-con-nected devices, with cloudsupercomputing trans-forming innovation for busi-nesses of all sizes andartificial intelligence fueling
everything, he said.Five Israeli start-ups will be chosen in
cohorts twice a year, for six-month immer-sion programs. While the requirementsare not sector or stage-specific, Bradfordstressed that selected start-ups wouldneed to be making an impact and address-ing a targetable market, with a definedyet malleable product road map. In addition, the founding team must have been workingtogether for at least six months, he said.As Oracle starts to recruit candidates
for its Israeli program, Bradford stressedthe company’s commitment to the region, noting that the Tel Aviv area has the sec-ond-biggest start-up market in the world.“The reason I’m still here is I see at

Oracle a commitment to change, to disrupt ourselves,” he said.“I would like for you guys to view Oracle as a company that isvery much here toward the future.”
Commentary: The words of Mr. Bradford, Oracle’ssenior vice president: “innovate or die” are most reveal-ing, meaning the future belongs to the winners; thosewho are not afraid of the future, but think almostexclusively of the future. It’s no longer the five pillars:food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, and education, butit is all about creating future technology, which inreality is targeted to make one become independentfrom God. And Israel, a secular nation, is apparentlythe best source for the future.
The Bible, however, has another future, and that isguaranteed by His Word: “For the earthshall be filled with the knowledge ofthe glory of the Lord, as the waterscover the sea” (Habakkuk 2:14). 6598(For more on Habakkuk, read Prophecy for the

in one month in England during the recentMiddle East conflict, and increased rep-resentation by neo-Nazi and ultra-nationalistfactions in the European legislature hasmany continental Jews worried.
Commentary: Anti-Semitism is butnatural, for the Jews are differentfrom all people on the face of theearth, in spite of their two millennialattempt to be integrated. The peopleof this world, regardless of religion, who do not have faith in the written
Word of God, are by nature anti-Semitic, although not all.
Particularly in these last fewmonths, when right-wing populistparties have shaken some of Europe’sestablishment, the distinctionbetween the locals (natives) and oth-ers that are different is being agi-tated.
What does that mean for Jews inEurope? The return to the land oftheir fathers. In Ezekiel 39:27, weread: “Then shall they know that Iam the LORD their God, whichcaused them to be led into captivityamong the heathen: but I have gath-ered them unto their own land, andhave left none of them any morethere.” 6597

ISRAEL
Is Christianity Under Threat?A misleading article in Newsweek states, “Israelcondemned for threatening future of Christianityin the Holy Land.”
The article goes on to claim that “Church leaders inJerusalem have accused Israel of undermining Chris-

Israel it is well-understood that the statement is a specificobjection to a complex estate transaction. Yet without propercontext, an international Newsweek reader might very wellbelieve that Israel is massacring Christian people and utterlyextinguishing Christian history as is indeed happening throughoutthe Middle East, at the hands of Islamic State and others. In contrast to Newsweek’s misleading drama, Israel is
actually the only Middle Eastern country where Christian pop-ulations are safe, thriving and growing.Father Gabriel Naddaf of Nazareth recently explained to the
United Nations, “Do you know that over the past years some100,000 Christians have been killed annually? … If we look atthe Middle East, Mr. President, we realize there’s only one safeplace where Christians are not persecuted. One place wherethey are protected, enjoying freedom of worship and expression, living in peace and not subjected to killing and genocide. It isIsrael, the country I live in. The Jewish state is the only placewhere the Christians of the Holy Land live in safety.”

existence of the state since 1948. In recent years, Bible-believing
Christians are on the increase.Although there is opposition in somecases, particularly from Ultra-Ortho-dox Jews, persecution remains aminor issue. From confidentialsources, we hear that living faith isbecoming more and more evidentamong military personnel. LEBANON
Biblical CanaanitesDiscoveredDNA research is shining newlight on the Biblical Canaanitecivilization, which existed thou-sands of years ago in the MiddleEast.
The ancient civilization, which cre-ated the first alphabet and is men-
tioned frequently in the Bible, has longfascinated historians. LiveScience reportsthat, because the Canaanites kept theirrecords on papyrus, rather than clay, rela-tively little is known about them. Now, however, scientists have found a
genetic ‘trail’ back to the Canaanites’ ancientworld.“In light of the enormously complex his-
tory of this region in the last few millennia,it was quite surprising that over 90 percentof the genetic ancestry of present-dayLebanese was derived from the Canaanites,”said Chris Tyler-Smith, senior group leaderat The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, ina statement. The researchers also discovered that
the ancient Canaanites were a mixture oflocal people, who settled in farming villagesduring the Neolithic period, and easternmigrants who arrived about 5,000 yearsago. “Using ancient DNA we show for thefirst time who were (genetically) the ancientCanaanites, how they were related to otherancient populations and what was theirfate,” explained Marc Haber, a genetic dataexpert at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Insti-tute, in an email to Fox News. Haber added that the results complement
Biblical accounts of the Canaanites. While
the Israelites are commanded to “utterly destroy” theCanaanites in Deuteronomy 20:16-18, Judges 1 describesthe survival of a number of Canaanite communities.Canaanites once lived in what we now recognize as
Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The remains of the five ancient Canaanites studied as partof the DNA research were recovered in the modern-dayLebanese city of Sidon.
-www.foxnews.com, 1 August 2017
Commentary: How accurate this research is remainsto be seen, but there seems to be evidence thatsome remnant of the Canaanites can be located inthe land of Lebanon.
Prophetically, this is of interest, because ancientIsrael failed to destroy the Canaanites, who spiri-tually were a picture of sin. Although Israel was astubborn and sinful people, God used them as atool of judgment against the inhabitants of the landof Canaan.
We read these words in Joshua 17:13: “Yet itcame to pass, when the children of Israel werewaxen strong, that they put the Canaanites totribute, but did not utterly drive them out.” 6591
