ABOUT fifty taxis on the R61 route(between Mthatha and Port StJohns) were impounded by traf-fic officers of the King SabataDalindyebo municipality last
Wednesday morning.
Chaos ensued when taxi owners and driv-ers fought back.
Operation coordinator Mphokazi Nkonzosaid the taxis that were impounded had nopermits but only used operator cards.“The drivers have no permits to carry the
passengers. They are not allowed to be on theroad, hence we have seized their taxis,” saidNkonzo.Nkonzo said theywerenot focusing on taxis
only but every driver on the road. Other driv-ers were also caught driving without drivers’licences and with overloaded vehicles.
She said some of the drivers and ownersrefused to comply or cooperate andweremak-ing it hard for them to carry out their duties. The drivers blocked the officers because
they did not want them to take their taxis tothe municipal detention area.Chaos broke out and the police were called
in to keep the peace and to remove the angrytaxi drivers who were blocking the way.“Theproblem is that officers arenot issuing
tickets to us but the officers demand us to pay
them spot-cash and they have detained ourtaxis here for more than an hour,” saidMnikelo Mbopho, Transport Officer at Unce-do Taxi Services, who also said they wereagainst the operation.“We believe they are raising funds with the
money they collect from us while they knowvery well that the permits are delayed at theTraffic department in Botha Sgcau,” saidMbopho. He said they were surprised to seescores of police officers with big guns forcingthem to comply when theywere still negotiat-ing with the traffic officers. All the taxis and vehicles were escorted to
the detaining centre with the help of the po-lice.Police Spokesperson Mzukisi Fatyela said
they were called in by the traffic officersworkingat theoperationwithallegations thatthey were assaulted by the taxi drivers. Onarrival, they, however, did not see anyone be-ing assaulted. “We will investigate these alle-gations togetherwith those from the taxi driv-ers that the traffic officers were insultingthem. At this stagewearenot surewhat reallyhappened, but the taxis were taken away,”said Fatyela.

COMMUNITY members from Willowvalewill be celebrating the launch of the Willow-vale White Door Centre of Hope, that will beheld in Chamshe locality today.
This centre will officially be launched bythe Department of Social Development andSpecial Programmes.According to the communication’s officer
of Social Development, Xolisa Mgwatyu, thecampaign is meant to create and increaseawareness on victim empowerment servicesand the negative impact of gender-based vio-lence in communities.“AWhiteDoor Centre of Hope is a localized
victim reception centre that is located asclose to the community as possible. It func-tions as a short term safe space that victimscan access if they need to wait for profession-al services,” he said.He said during this event the Department
will be launching all the centres that are un-der the Mbhashe Municipality, since thereare two centres inElliotdale, three inDutywaand one in Willowvale.“These centres are funded by the Depart-
ment of Social Development,. There are fourother centres inMbhashewhich are not fund-ed, and the Department is still looking attheir requests.”Mgwatyu said this initiative followed a
number of serious crimes that were commit-ted in the Tholeni locality in Butterworthwhere a number of women and childrenwereraped and murdered. That led tootherwomenleaving theirhomes
to seek refuge in one placewhere they all slepttogether and that place is now called the Cen-tre of Excellence and was launched last year.

MBHASHE Stakeholders gathered at Mnan-di Junior Secondary School in Willowvaleto give support and educate pupils and par-ents about the seriousness of using drugs.
Parents were also made aware of thesymptoms to look out for if they suspecttheir children of abusing substances.According to the Supervisor of Care and
Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL),Lulekwa Mbhele, they decided to host thisawareness because they had realized that
the number of pupils using drugs was in-creasing.“For now we are targeting Willowvale
schools because most of the time when pu-pils go on holidays, we have found that theyare using a drug called tik,” Mbhele said. She added thatmost parentswere clueless
about the symptoms that are shown by achild who is using drugs and that is whythey decided to involve themso that they areaware of the symptoms and ask for helpwhen they see them.“The Department of Health and Social De-
velopment have the necessary equipment to
do check-ups on those who are suspected ofusing drugs.”One of the parents, Noluyolo Mgoduka,
said they are very happy about what thesestakeholders are doing.“Parents have to work together to ensure
that they are helping their children andshout for help if there is a need to. We haveto share knowledgewith others because thisepidemic is growing in each and everyhousehold,” said Mrs Mgoduka. She said drug abusewas not only happen-
ing in the senior secondary schools but alsoin the junior level and it leads other pupils
to involve themselves in crime activities. On the other side police officials were
trying their best to ensure that they edu-cate learners about drugs and other thingswhich can lead young people into commit-ting crime.Police Spokesperson, Captain Jackson
Manatha said the main problem was thatpolice were doing their best to educate pu-pils but there should be tougher punish-ment of those who are convicted. “We ar-rest those whom we find selling drugs, butwe don’t know if justice is doing enoughto give them tough sentences.”

COMMUNITYmembersof theMadwaleniAd-ministrative Areas in Elliotdale marched inprotest against the alleged unfair recruitingstrategy that the Demo Construction Compa-ny was using to employ people in the con-struction of the Gateway Clinic in the area.
Community members were accusing theconstruction company of allegedly employingonly peoplewhoweremembers of theAfrican
National Congress.“In order to be employed by this construc-
tion company you must be an ANC memberfirst. This is not acceptable at all because wehave a number of people who are not workingin our Administrative Area,” said the leaderof the community, Samson Wulana. He said among the people who had partici-
pated in the march to the construction sitewere other members of the ANC who wereagainst nepotism and also needed a quick so-lution to the problem.
One of the residents, Mbundane Sincane, said he was one of the victims and they werefeeling unhappy about what was happeningbecause they want jobs.“Whatwewant is that this steering commit-
tee must be changed so that it will representthe entire village since we are all stricken bypoverty and we need employment like themembers of the ANC do,” he said. But one of the construction company man-
agers, Volakhe Vetyane, denied these allega-tions and said it was the United Democratic
Movement (UDM) who called for a march notthe community members of Madwaleni.“As we are looking forward to the national
elections we are aware that these allegationswill come up and there is nomeeting that wascalled where this issue was discussed,” hesaid. Vetyane said the only meeting that washeld was for members of the UDM. Accordingto him, they are waiting for the Ward Coun-cilor or Chief to call a meeting if there is aneed to do so. “The only thing that we cannotdo is to be called by an opposition party.”

“We believe that in its role as South Afri-ca’s best loved outdoor brand the CampMaster association with the fight againstrhino poaching is, from a consumer per-spective, both intuitive and compelling.
“We envisage that this will enable mem-bers of the public to visibly express theirsupport for rhino conservation while alsomaking a financial contribution to protectour rhinos,” said Derick Kalan, Camp Mas-ter brand ambassador.
Kalan believes the people fighting for thesurvival of this endangered species need allthe support they can get, including finan-cial support. “But the fight against rhinopoaching needs even more than that – achange in mind-set. If we, as a nation, cancome together and demonstrate our sup-port for this worthy cause, that is a trulystrong message.
