ANCTreasuryGeneral, Zwe-li Mkhize, said the ANCshould be at the forefront ofspeaking out against cor-ruption and should be act-
ing as whistle blowers and support allinvestigations into irregularities.
Mkhize was speaking at the AlfredNzo memorial lecture in Mount AyliffHall last week. He also called for deci-
sive action to be taken to remove allthose involved in corruption. “TheANCmust set an example of revolutionarymorality and ethical leadership as amonument to our heroes, like AlfredNzo, Oliver Tambo, Moses Kotane, Mo-ses Mabhida, Walter Sisulu, AlbertinaSisulu and others.According to him, ANC leaders
should demonstrate to SouthAfrica thatNelson Mandela’s Legacy is safe withthe ANC as legitimate custodian of allthe values Madiba had represented,”said Mkhize. In awarning toANCmembers against
playing dirty political games, Mkhizesaid itwasnot in their culture and tradi-tion to air dirty laundry in public. Hesaid leaking records of confidential de-liberations – often distorted to favourpersonal points of view – brought theANC to public ridicule and scorn.“We must stamp out division. Many
instances where divisions appear arenot owing to differences of opinions onhow to implement theFreedomCharter, but on how to subvert governance by in-dividuals attempting toutilize their offi-
cial status for personal gain,” saidMkhize. He described Nzo as a good listener,
respecting the opinion of all people, even that of his opposition. Accordingto him Nzo was never intimidated andhad the intellectual depth to positivelyinfluence people.“TohonourAlfredNzo today, wemust
work hard to rebuild the founding val-ues of the African National Congress. We must double our efforts to forge uni-ty and to fight against racism, tribalismand sexism.Weneed to build a truly car-ing and compassionate society,” saidMkhize. The Alfred Nzo District Municipality
was named after Nzo who was born andbred in the Thabachicha village inMatatiele.Alfred Nzo was the longest serving
Secretary-General of the ANC. Duringhis tenure, he was sent to various coun-tries including Egypt, India, Zambia,Norway, Tanzania and he had also rep-resented the ANC in the United NationsAssembly.Together with Oliver Tambo and oth-
ers, Nzo formed part of the ANC’s back-bone, holding down the fort and propa-gating the party’s struggle while theircomrades were imprisoned on RobbenIsland and in other prisons. Once theban on the ANC had been lifted and Nel-son Mandela was released from prisonin 1990, Nzo returned to South Africa.Nzo has received the “Order of
Friendship Among People, Praesidiumof the Union of the Soviet Socialist Re-public’s Supreme Soviet” in 1985, andwas also bestowed in 2003 with the “TheOrder of Luthuli” by former PresidentThabo Mbeki.Alfred Nzo’s sister, Nomazotsho Nzo,
said she was very happy that her dis-trict municipality was still remember-ing him.AlfredNzo DistrictMunicipality Dep-
uty ExecutiveMayor SixolileMehloma-khulu said they have decided to putaside June as Alfred Nzo month. Theyhad also put aside some money to pro-duce a documentary on Nzo’s life inpartnership with the Ekurhuleni Mu-nicipality in Gauteng and Zambia.
In awarning to ANCmembers againstplaying dirty politicalgames, Mkhize said itwas not in theirculture and traditionto air dirty laundry inpublic.

WHILE other older women are enjoying theirpension grants, a woman (90) from the ChrisHani Township in Mthatha has to use hergrant money to provide for her nine grand-children.
Nogungqile Lolwana is struggling to makeends meet, taking care of her grandchildrenand her son.She is living in a cold, damp-smelling shack
with a wet floor. Inside and out, this shack of-fers nothing that resembles a home for its res-idents. When the Express visited the shack,it was discovered that Lolwana was sleepingon a traditional mat with no pillow or mat-tress. Instead of a pillow, she uses clothes toput her head up.She said she was sharing her shack with
her son and daughter-in-law, both of whomwere unemployed and were collecting card-boards to sell.“Life here is not good at all. I am living here
because of my children. I maintain themwithmy pension grant, because they are not work-ing and I love them very much,” said Lolwa-na.She said recently she was visited by Bish-
op Tshepo Machaea and members of theIbandla laseMthini Evangelical Movement, who assisted her with groceries.According to Machaea, they received a
phone call from one of the residents who toldthem Lolwana’s story. “Since one of our mis-sions in this congregation is to help peoplewho are less fortunate, we decided to visither. We did not believe our eyeswhenwe sawthis elderly lady living and sleeping is suchbad conditions. This tormented our hearts, because these people could end up gettingpneumonia from sleeping on a wet floor.”According to him, after seeing the situa-
tion, they bought groceries for the family andcontacted other congregations who donatedclothes. Machaea said they would love to seethiswoman living inabetter place, since theyhonoured the elderly.“It’s really touching to see a 90-year-old
woman sleeping in a place like this.Anythingcould happen to her. The door is not in goodcondition and there are holes in the wall.In response to an enquiry from Express,
communications officer for the King SabathaDalindyebo Municipality, Sonwabo Mampo-za, said it was the first time he had heard ofLolwana’s living conditions.

SPOKESPERSON for the Eastern Cape de-partment ofLocalGovernment andTradition-al Affairs, Mamkeli Ngam, has vowed thatmore arrests of bogus traditional surgeons inthe Libode area would follow.
Ngam’s utterance follows the arrest of a tra-ditional surgeon, Samkelo Mvubu, who hasbeen chargedby theNational ProsecutingAu-thority (NPA) with two counts of murder.Ngam said he was collecting information
and was communicating with the Libode po-lice ahead of the expected arrests of at least
four more bogus surgeons in the region.Mvubuappeared in theLibodeMagistrate’s
Court last Wednesday. It is alleged that Mvubu circumcised two of
the initiates that have died this initiation sea-son. The murder cases emanate from the dis-covery of the two dead bodies by the policeat an illegal circumcision school.According to NPA regional spokesperson,
Luxolo Tyali, in addition to the two counts ofmurder, Mvubu is also facing two counts ofcontravening the Health Standards Tradi-tional Circumcision Act No 6 of 2001.Meanwhile, in the same court of the district
of Libode, on Thursday, July 03, three male
teenagers (16-17) appeared on charges of un-lawful circumcision for circumcisinganotherboy (16).The young initiate was rescued by the po-
lice and is currently in a serious condition intheNelsonMandelaAcademicHospital inMt-hatha.The three teenagers were not released into
the custody of their parents, but were insteadreferred to the Bosasa Place of Safety in Mt-hatha, until their next court appearance onJuly 10.Tyali said the NPA was taking these cir-
cumcision-related cases very seriously.“Wewill vigorously prosecute all circumci-
sion-related cases without fear, favour orprejudice.Andwhere convictions are securedwe shall argue for the harshest possible sen-tences. We appeal to members of the public, especially parents, to be vigilant and to ex-pose these bogus traditional surgeons andnurses,” he said.AT the time of going to print, 24 initiates
have died in the Eastern Cape with at least131 being hospitalised or kept at rescue cen-tres.The premier of the Eastern Cape and the
MEC for Local Government and TraditionalAffairs, Fikile Xasa, was expected to addressthe media yesterday.

IN the hope of helping young boys recoverfrom illegal circumcision practices, theCommunity Development Foundation ofSouth Africa (Codefsa) is working hand inhand with the Department of Health (DoH)to place rescue and treatment centres inLusikisiki, Libode and Mhlontlo (Qumbuand Tsolo).
Codefsa chairperson, Nkululeko Nxesi, said that the rescue centre in Lusikisikiwas up and running and that about 80 boyshave been treated here, while the centre inMhlontlo was still under construction.“The rescue centre in Libode has been
running since last year, when it helpedabout 120 young boys to get treatment for il-legal circumcision practices,” added Nxesi.
He said the rescue centre that was underconstruction was their main focus, sincethey wanted to make sure that each andevery corner of the region gets the helpneeded in order to lower the death rateamong initiates.“We will fight the existence of illegal cir-
cumcision schools with all we’ve got be-cause they are undermining the impor-tance of the circumcision tradition,” saidNxesi.Circumcision school owner, Ayanda
Magini from Qumbu, said that they ap-plauded the work done by Codefsa, sinceit helped in fighting the negative percep-tion parents have towards this tradition. She said there was nothing negative
about the tradition itself, but that greedypeople with no knowledge of the traditionmade it look dangerous.

ship, which is regarded as “the home of box-ing in South Africa”.“I grew up in a place where one had to pro-
tect oneself with one’s fists. My involvementin sport started in grade 5. I never becamea professional, because I sustained a head in-jury, forcing me to quit boxing,” saidJantjies.Opponents who had given him sleepless
nights were Ayanda Barnabas andMthobeliMhlophe. After hanging up his boxing gloves,
Jantjies kept being involved with the devel-opment of the sport. He moved from EastLondon to Coffee Bay where he guided andtrained Goodman Dywili, who became Afri-can Baby Champion in the OR Tambo re-gion. “I amproudaboutwhat Ihaveachievedwith that boy.”Jantjies said things were not always easy

BORDER’s u13 Coca-Cola CravenWeek teamhad the honour of playing in the main gameof the tournament at theKings Park Stadiumin Durban on Friday after three unbeatengames during the week.
Despite their backline being regarded asthe most exciting of the week and havingscored two tries, they lost 29-14 to WesternProvince in the game which is regarded asthe unofficial final.WP and Border were the most impressive
sides on the openingday of theweekand theycontinued to play the most attractive rugbythroughout.Border produced the turn-around game of
the tournament when they beat EasternProvince 24-13 on Day 3 of the week (Thurs-day). EP led 13-0 at the break and it stayedthatway for the first 10minutes of the secondhalf. It was all Border after that and they ranin four tries without reply to end EP’s un-beaten run and booked themselves a place inthe unofficial final.Border’s final against Western Province
featured a contrast of playing styles. Prov-ince had the stronger forwards and three oftheir five tries came from driving mauls, while Border had the most exciting backlineof the week. They managed to score two tries in the fi-
nal, but their speedsters never saw enoughof the ball and Western Province were goodvalue for their win in the end.Daniel Venter scored two of the pushover
tries for Province, with the others comingfrom Benjamin Van Schalkwyk andMeiringEbersohn (two). Fabrizio Linnert kicked twoconversions. The Border tries were by Austin Brandt,
Sibusiso Javu. Rayden Masters convertedboth tries.
. The U13 Coca-Cola CravenWeek is in its51st year of existence and isnamed inhonourof former SARugby president, Dr Danie Cra-ven, who opened the first U18 Coca-Cola Cra-ven Week in East London in 1964.At the first game Dr Craven said: “The
board wants the game to be played in theright spirit. This includes: attacking, adven-turous, open, constructive rugby, withoutthe interference of the result, and withoutdistracting from the game. If the schoolboyscan accept this spirit, it will extend to ournational approach, to the benefit of all.”The game has changed enormously since
then. The teams are far better prepared andthe entire approach to rugby is far more pro-
fessional but there’s no question than Cra-ven’s call for attacking, adventurous rugbywas answered in Durban last week.Craven was also at pains to stress that this
is a festival. There are no log points kept, andno overall winners or losers. What hasemerged is the phenomenon of the “main

ment back then.”Jantjies said the youth should put their
minds and energy into sport and education.“If they do this, they will never regret it.”Jantjies is an educator at the Fairfield Jun-
ior Secondary School in Mthatha.
He is happily married and blessed with twoboys. Although he spends most of his time inMthatha, he still visits Mdantsane during theholidays. In his spare time he loves to read, run and

game” – the week’s concluding fixture – withthe honour of playing in it reserved for thetwo teams that play themost attractive, effec-tive rugby during the week. It’s easier to de-cide on the main game at the U13 Coca-ColaCravenWeek than it is at the other Coca-ColaYouth Weeks because the primary schools
play four matches at the week, not three asthe older players do.That means that, by the end of the week,
it’s unlikely that too many teams will havewon all three prior encounters. So, the maingame will probably feature the two “A sec-tion” teams who are unbeaten at that stage.
