Aim
To present the principles for an Energy Management System as per ISO50001.

What is an Energy Management System
An energy management system (EnMS) is a set of interrelated or interacting elements to establish an energy policy and energy objectives, and processes and procedures to achieve those objectives. An EnMS enables an organization to achieve its policy commitments and take action as needed to improve its energy performance. The continual improvement is realised through the Plan-Do-Check-Act framework, by: • Developing a policy for more efficient use of energy • Fixing targets and objectives to meet the policy • Using data to better understand and make decisions concerning energy use and consumption • Measuring the results • Reviewing the effectiveness of the policy And therefore continually improving energy management.

4.2 IMPLEMENTATION Establishment of implementation system 4.2.1Establish a system for implementation of measures by developing the procedures for energy management, by defining and assigning tasks Implementation and record-keeping 4.2.2 Record-keeping for the implementation of each measure
4.3 MONITORING Monitoring tools 4.3.1EEOI could be considered as the primary monitoring tool Establishment of monitoring system 4.3.4 Monitoring system, including the procedures for collecting data and the assignment of responsible personnel, should be developed
4.4 SELF-EVALUATION AND INPROVEMENT 4.4.1-3 self-evaluation should be implemented periodically
4.1 PLANNING 4.1.1 Planning primarily determines both the current status of ship energy usage and the expected improvement of ship energy efficiency Ship-specific measures 4.1.2 Package of measures to be implemented 4.1.3 Determine and understand the ship’s current status of energy usage Company-specific measures 4.1.5 recommended company energy management plan 4.1.6 Human resource development 4.1.7 Goal setting

TMSA & Energy Management
• OCIMF Energy Efficiency and Fuel Management
• Will be part of TMSA III • One could extract the main requirement
of an energy management system from this document.

What is an Energy Management System – Extracts from OCIMF Energy Efficiency and Fuel Management
• The Company has an Energy Management Policy that addresses vessel Operations
• An Energy Management Plan demonstrates effective onboard implementation of the Company energy policy
• An Energy Management Plan addresses voyage management and includes appropriate measurement and reporting requirements
• An Energy Management Plan addresses efficient use of energy and vessel optimisation and includes appropriate measurement and reporting requirements
• The Company uses management tools to establish baseline criteria to facilitate performance improvements
• Vessel operating procedures include measures that promote energy efficiency
• Regular periodic reviews are undertaken of the performance of individual vessels
• Targets for voyage management and vessel optimisation are set and regularly reviewed by management

What is ISO 50001?
• International Standard ISO 50001:2011. • ISO 50001: Energy Management System (EnMS) – Requirements with
guidance for use • Overall aim of the Standard is to ‘enable organizations establish the
systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption’.
• Intended to apply to all types and sizes of organization. • Can be used independently or integrated with any other management
system.

Benefits
• Costs cut through increased efficiency thereby delivering competitive advantage
• Energy security risks reduced through improved energy performance • Increased stakeholder confidence (e.g. oil majors) and employee
engagement due to organisational commitment to integrated climate change emissions reduction strategy
• Competitive advantage by implementing industry best practices e.g. OCIMF energy efficiency guidance
• Productivity & compliance improved • Policies formalised • Ease of integration with existing ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 system
standards and also ISM and SEEMP

“Energy efficiency is the forgotten source. We speak of oil, gas, coal,
nuclear and renewables as sources of energy but we forget that the
most efficient use of energy is not to use it at all.”
