1. PURCHASE THE ISO 50001 STANDARD Purchase the ISO 50001 standard from SAI Global Infostore http://infostore.saiglobal.com/ 2. CONDUCT TRAINING Understand how energy management systems apply to your organization by attending ISO 50001 Training. ISO 50001 Training is recommended not only for your Core team but also Top Management. SAI Global offers an ISO 50001 – Overview Course for those who need a basic understanding of the strategic and business issues related to ISO 50001, including executive and senior managers. ISO 50001 - Understanding and Implementation Course would be recommended for your core ISO 50001 team. 3. PERFORM A GAP ASSESSMENT A Gap Assessment is recommended to assess whether your implementation plan (tasks, resources, timelines) is adequate and to identify those areas that there are “gaps” to be filled to implement a complete ISO 50001 system. It will also allow your organization to identify whether there is an opportunity to integrate ISO 50001 with your other management systems or build upon existing energy conservation efforts underway within your facility. 4. LEADERSHIP TEAM COMMITMENT Selection of management representatives and energy management team Definition of roles, responsibilities, and authorities Identification of additional resources that will be needed Definition of the scope and boundary of the system Development of the overall Energy Policy, with its commitments. 5. 7. IMPLeMent yOur IsO 50001 enerGy ManaGeMent systeM Complete the actual roll-out of the documentation and incorporate the Energy Management System components into the core business processes and procedure.

8. addItIOnaL traInInG and cOMMunIcatIOns strateGIesA second-stage of training is recommended so that the employees can engage in the implementation process and can immediately apply what they have learned in the training. This second-stage of training will support:

▪ Specific Training and Competence Modules to Support Implementation

▪ Awareness Training – Facility-Wide

▪ Internal Auditor Training

▪ An Overall Communications Strategy – Internal and External – needed to support implementation.

9. estaBLIsh key MeasuraBLes and eVaLuateEnergy Management System performance needs to be measured, monitored & evaluated for continual improvement.

10. InternaL audItsWill provide an accurate picture of the implementation process and will help to discover those areas that are in full conformance, as well as those areas that may still require additional focus. Remember that a complete internal audit is required prior to the certification process.

11. deVeLOP nOn-cOnFOrMItIes, cOrrectIOn, cOrrectIVe & PreVentIVe actIOnsAny previously identified non-conformities should be verified as effectively corrected and closed.

12. cOnduct ManaGeMent reVIeWA management review is crucial at the end of the implementation to confirm that the system is fully functioning and that the organization is ready for a certification assessment.

13. FOLLOW-uP and cOntInuaL IMPrOVeMentThe follow-up action items from that Management Review will allow for further improvement in performance as the system cycles forward.
