IMPORTANT POLICE NOTICEIn recent years Licensing laws have been tightened up. Club officials have met this week with the police.Local police concerns are the need for a sufficient number of stewards to enforce licensing conditions on thepremises. To work with the police club stewards will be readily identifiable by name badges. One particular worry is that younger club supporters (not being able to purchase at the bar) may try and bringalcohol onto the premises. The stewards are under instructions that only alcohol purchased on the premisescan be consumed on the premises. Alcohol from other sources must not be brought into the club house.

ISLE OF MULL WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLANDRUGBY SEVENS TOURNAMENT

Founded in 1985 the Isle of Mull Sevens Tournament brings together rugby clubs from all over the WestHighlands and Islands along with guests: Rugby players from all walks of life and all levels of skill competeon equal terms of skill and enjoyment.By doing this we hope to promote rugby in Scotland’s West Highlands and Islands. The very social natureof rugby and the fact that it is a game for all weathers makes it an ideal sport for our isolated rural areaswhere long trips and overnight stays are commonplace. Mull’s geographic position in the centre of thisremote area makes it the perfect setting for a competition of this nature. For these reasons the SevensCommittee award trophies to the best West Highland team in the tournament. As an added incentive thesetrophies are for the winning club to keep. The rules for this competition are on Page 26.In 1992 the Mull Sevens made rugby history by running a dual tournament for both ladies and men. Thiswas the first of its kind anywhere in the world! This makes 2007 the twenty-second anniversary of the Worlds Most Sociable Sevens.

WEST HIGHLAND AND ISLAND TEAMSWHO HAVE ATTENDED THE ISLE OF MULL SEVENS

ISLE OF MULL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Mull is the third largest island in the Hebrides, exceeded in area by only Lewis andSkye. The coast line, broken by sea lochs, bays and inlets, is the amazing length of over 300 miles. OnSunday 30th July, 1978 the first game of rugby was played and won on Mull! Shortly after, the Isle of MullRFC was formed and has thrived under what can only be described as arduous conditions. April 1989 wasthe most successful in the history of Mull Rugby Club with three sevens victories. These achievements andthe completion of the Garmony pitches gained the club the honour of being MacEwan’s Club of the Monthin September of 1989. In the spring of 1994 we completed our Clubhouse. In 2002 the club became the firstGlasgow and District island club to be promoted to the Scottish National Leagues.WOMENS SECTION: Mull women’s teams have won the main tournament once. The women’s rugbyteam was officially constituted into the Isle of Mull Rugby Club in 1992.CLUB PITCH: Garmony. CLUB HOUSE: Garmony Clubhouse.

ARRAN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: It is often said that Arran is Scotland in miniature - having wild mountains to the northand a fertile plain to the south. An ideal gathering ground for rugby players. Arran Rugby club was startedin September 1975 and for 10 years the club played only friendly games. In that time the hospitality of theseislanders became legendary with many a visiting team, long overdue when finally returning home! In 1985the club took a major step and joined the Glasgow District League. By careful timing of kick-offs they areable to play and return by ferry on the same day. Unfortunately Arran are taking a break from rugby at themoment. We hope this turns out to be a short break.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 10

BENBECULA NOMADS RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist have been linked by bridges and causeways toform a single ‘long island’. Benbecula is separated from its neighbours by stretches of shell sand and quicksand. On the southern slope of the largest hill Rueval, all of 408 feet high, is the cave in which PrinceCharles Edward Stuart hid while waiting for Flora MacDonald. The Army have a rocket base on Benbeculaand a firing range on South Uist. In 1977 some local lads and schoolboys got together and formed a rugbyteam. They have no home for the club; hence the name Benbecula Nomads. The locals found difficulty insustaining a team and later combined with the army team. The number of civilians to service playersfluctuated from year to year. Local players come from all three islands. The team have amazing travel difficulties. In fact on one occasion they left for a game in Edinburgh onThursday and due to storms were not able to return until the following Wednesday! This perhaps explainswhy they play very, very few games.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1

BUTE RUGBY CLUBCLUB HISTORY: With the mountains of Arran to the south and those of Argyll to the north, Bute is alowland island in a highland setting. The capital is Rothesay, perhaps the best loved of all the Clyde resorts.Although closest of all the visiting teams to the main centres of rugby in and around Glasgow the Bute teamis also restricted by a ferry journey across the Firth of Clyde to Wemyss Bay. In fact, players leaving forMull do so by the less time consuming Rhubodach - Colintraive ferry. Bute Rugby Club was founded in1979. They run one occasional social team.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 16

ISLAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Islay, the southernmost of the inner Hebrides, has a population of 4,000. Each year itpays the Exchequer the equivalent of £6,000 for each man, women and child on the island! The reason forsuch riches is ‘uisge-beatha’ - the water of life! i.e. whisky, which Islay produces in large quantities.Islay R.F.C. joined the SRU in December 1983. Islay run their own great event, a beach rugby festival, thatnormally takes place in the warmer summer months.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 9

KINTYRE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Were it not for a tiny isthmus at Tarbert, Kintyre would be a member of the innerHebrides. Principal town is Campbeltown - probably once the capital of the Celtic Kingdom of Dalriada;the name Campbeltown comes from the early 1600’s when Archibald Campbell was Earl of Argyll.Kintyre Rugby Club started in 1983 with a meeting at the Ardshiel Hotel, Campbeltown. In 1985 theyjoined the Glasgow and District League. After a break the club has reformed. We are very much lookingforwards to Kintyre coming back to the Mull Sevens.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 13

LOCHABER RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Travelling north when you cross the Ballachulish Bridge you enter Lochaber trulyScotland’s grandest landscape. Lochaber is spread at the foot of the Great Glen and at the head of LochLinnhe stands Ben Nevis. Between Ben Nevis and Loch Linnhe lies the chief town of Lochaber - FortWilliam. Lochaber R.F.C. was officially started in 1969, a good five years after Oban. Her officials pointout, however, that the first team in Fort William was playing ‘way back before the war in 1933 it ran for afew years and then folded. Lochaber is a strong West Highland team and play in the National Leagues.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 16

MID ARGYLL RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: In 1977 a few enthusiastic players started a team, based at Lochgilphead and called itMid Argyll. Lochgilphead is a town of Victorian and later stone houses, standing on a slope at the top ofLoch Gilp, an inlet off Loch Fyne. The Crinan Canal, which skirts the town, is a never ending source ofenjoyment as boats journey backwards and forwards from the Sound of Jura. Mid Argyll have a greattournament record being twice winners and runners-up three times and also winning BWH Team Trophy.Mid Argyll play in the Glasgow District Leagues.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 20

OBAN LORN RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: By West Highland standards Oban is a large town, essentially where steamers meet roadand railway. From the piers fishing boats are constantly coming and going; ferries for the inner and outerHebrides as well as a host of smaller ports leave daily and various supply boats load and unload. Duringthe summer tourists fill the rows of hotels along the front, attracted by Highland Games, Ceilidhs, Regattasor the general scenic splendour. Oban Lorn RFC, now in their 31st season, have a showpiece Clubhouse.Oban are a powerful team and play in the National Leagues.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 20

PORT-RIGH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB - Ellen a’CheoCLUB HISTORY: The name of Port-Righ is the gaelicised form of Portree, which means King’s Harbour- conferred on the town after the visit of James V’s fleet in 1540. Eilean a’Cheo means island of mist or theMisty Isle - a bit less of a mouthful than ‘an-t eilean Sgiathanach’ (Isle of Skye). From the sea the cloudsclinging to Skye can be seen long before its craggy peaks; thus the Norsemen called it ‘Skygo’ or Isle ofClouds. It is a land of mountain and moor. Tourism apart, crofting is the main occupation of its 7,500population. Port-Righ was founded in January 1987 with the aim of promoting rugby in the island of Skye.Only a few friendlies were played until the beginning of the 87/88 season when the club applied for andwas accepted, to play in the Highland B League. Port-Righ is on a sabbatical at present.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5

SKYE AND LOCHALSH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Skye and Lochalsh are one of the few rugby clubs whose name encompasses both islandand mainland players. An island player has to cross by ferry at Kyleakin to play, for it is on the mainlandthat the club has its facilities. Kyle of Lochalsh is a bustling little township which has a constant feeling ofcoming and going. Skye and Lochalsh was founded in 1975 and initially played only friendlies. The teamnow play in the Highland League. Skye and Lochalsh were the first winners of our trophy with a superbteam performance. Who will ever forget the dramatic tie-break situation against Mid Argyll in the final.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 5

STORNOWAY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUBCLUB HISTORY: Stornoway is the metropolis of the Western Isles and the only town of burgh size in theHebrides. It is situated towards the north-east of the single island of Lewis and Harris. Though some 25,000people live on Lewis and Harris the island contains huge barren areas. Stornoway with a good naturalharbour is a fishing port, a market and a centre for the Harris Tweed industry. Tweed manufacturers gaverise to strong border connections; Mills management often trained at the textile college in Gala. Notsurprisingly this link led to the founding of Stornoway R.F.C. in 1942. The club played for ten years, stopped for ten years and then revived. Stornoway R.F.C. runs one team based in the town with access to acouncil playing field (they lost a previous field to NATO when a runway was extended). They do not playin a league because of problems with winter ferry timetables but do play in the Brin Cup.NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 1

COLLCLUB HISTORY: The Isle of Coll is to the north west of Mull. It is a stunning island with many whiteshell-sand beaches down the west coast. Even though the population is very small, Rugby on the island tooka turn for the better when Scotland international player and team captain, Rob Wainwright, moved their in1999. The Coll team have a very famous history of appearances at the Mull Sevens. They did in fact winthe competition on their first appearance (albeit boosted by several internationalists).NUMBER OF VISITS TO THE MULL SEVENS 6

NEWS FROM BELOW THE GRASS ROOTS

8

FIRST IS A TRUE STORY THAT REALLY IS FROM “BELOW THE GRASS ROOTS”One of Mull’s greatest players returns for a visit from New Zealand. John Mac welcome home. There’s a story about John Mac that needs retelling. The pitches you see in front of you were built on thefundraising efforts of the Mull club. Prior to work starting on the pitches we had a crisis. Preliminarysurveys found a large ridge of rock (it was just about on the centre spot of the main pitch as you see it tonow). The cost of removing this rock, £50,000 in today’s money, put the whole project in jeopardy. NowJohn Mac is a blaster by trade. Don’t worry he said I’ll remove the rock for you. John took his two weeksholiday and spent it, helped by another player called Oggie, blasting the rock away. It was a selfless act thatguaranteed enjoyment for many to come.

NEW NEIGHBOURYou will all see that we have a new neighbour. A warm welcome to James and Fiona MacGillivray. Thisis very good news for the Garmony facilities as we now know that if an unexpected problem arises thereis someone down here to let us know. James and Fiona have young children (Shona is a great tag rugbyplayer). Could you please keep all camping and celebrations away from the house and garden. THANKS

Todays Tag Rugby tournament has been organised by the Isle of Mull Rugby Club, thanks to the co-operation of theIsland’s Primary School Head Teachers, Active Schools co-ordinator Babs Whyte and Kenny Murray of the ScottishRugby Union. Tag Rugby has this season been introduced to all the Mull and Iona primary schools. The initiative isbased on an after schools club offering our Mull and Iona youngsters the opportunity to train and play Tag Rugby ina structured environment where the emphasis is on enjoyment through participation. The idea is for the after schools clubs to run throughout the school year, with a number of gatherings, hosted in turnby the participating schools and culminating in a Finals Day, which will be held each year on the morning of the Isleof Mull Rugby 7’s. Hopefully a thrilling prospect for all!At the gathering on Sunday 29th April at Bunessan there was a tie for first place from Bunessan and Iona PS jointteam and Salen PS, their league match was a great display of skill and endeavour which resulted in an 8 all draw.Salen PS coach Tom Nunn had high hopes of a first win for his team however he wasn’t too bothered as he reallyenjoyed the high standard of all the participating teams. Rob Burnie Headteacher at Bunessan PS felt it was a fairresult after all they were hosting the tournament! He is looking forward to Bunessan going one step further today.Dark horses Dervaig PS and Ulva PS coached by Kiwi Phil Tiernan could be worth an outside bet, Phil has beenjuggling job, coaching and nappy changing of new daughter, Orla. Congrats from the club to You and Ray! The otherside who are yet to get firing on all cylinders are Tobermory PS coached by the legendary Ian (Fuey) Noble, Fueyhas been doing some fine tuning to the side and reckons they will be turbo charged today. We ask that you encourage all the youngsters as todays tournament will hopefully be one that they will remember forsome time to come.Team ListsBunessan and Iona PS Coach Fergus Whyte/ Rob BurnieLewis MacLeod, Ben Shannon, Daisey Williams, Darren Clark, Ian MacDougall, Stephen MacMillan, Rachael BirkettAdam Docherty, Niel Callum Campbell, Stephen MacCracken, Anthony Capper, Blair Morrison, Annie Sharples.Dervaig and Ulva PS Coach Phil TiernanPoppy Strachan, Charlie Strachan, Harry Mortley, Carl Foster, Erin Hopton, Charlie Reade, Scott Mawhinney, Joe Millward, Katie Millward, Glen Donovan.Tobermory PS Coach Ian NobleStuart Crichton, Jim Ratcliffe, Kees Reoleveld, Kier Carmichael, Tal Sardone, Finlay Reade, Peter MacGregor,Frankie Ratcliffe, Charlotte Peacock, Kyle MacLeod, Calum MacDougall.Salen PS Coach Tom Nunn/ Gerry RalstonStuart MacL:ean, Jamie MacLean, Kyle MacLean, Ciaran Whyte, Rory Tait, Lucy Langford,Angus MacLennan,Isobel Downing, Shona MacGillivary, Sian Henderson, Ruby Low, Robert Kennedy, Rhian Maidment, StuartTomison

9GREAT NEWS IN ARGYLL WITH LOCAL PLAYERS BEING GIVEN THE CHANCE TO

STRETCH ABOVE THE GRASS ROOTSThrough hard work our regional SRU officer, Kenny Murray, has raised the funds to employ a rugbydevelopment officer in Argyll and Bute. Local clubs are contributing to wards some of the cost of this post.Mull has raised £2,000, Oban has contributed the same and further funds have come from the other Argyllclubs. There’s more good news on the way. Jamie Dempsey, our SRU Pathway officer, (a pathway officer is incharge of establishing a “pathway” for young, talented rugby players, to play at a higher level) has initiatedthe process to form an Argyll and Bute representative team. The first joint training session is tomorrow,Sunday, in Oban. At an earlier trial nine youngsters from Mull were identified to be given a chance to enterthe pathway process.

Mull Mini Rugby Team Win Oban & Lorn Sports Awards 2006Report by roving reporter Stevie MacCallum

Mull P6/7 mini rugby team were awarded the coveted team of the year trophy, overcoming some toughcompetition on the way.The Muileachs received the accolade because of the keenness of the team. They won 12 of their 14games scoring 155 tries conceding only 23 in the process. Only two of their games were home fixtureswhich meant a great deal of travelling for the youngsters. Two main factors contributed to this success. Firstly they worked very hard and trained regularly . Onmatch days it felt as if the bulk of the hard work had already taken place. Secondly the boys played verywell together. Each of the boys contributed to the success of the team. Thanks are due to the parents who encouraged the players to attend training and matches. They can bevery proud of their role. The team were:Patrick Carmichael, Stuart Tomlison, Kyle MacLean, Angus MacCallum, Ciaran Whyte, Calum Cooper,Ruaridh Tait, Kiaran Martin, Jacob Whatton, Dugie Brunton, Lewis MacLeod and DexterCoach Lorne Carmichael and Captain Angus MacCallum

'This is the first official outing for 'TheHighlanders', a very social teammade up of shonagh's favourite andmost accomadating rugby players. As the Highland dinner was last nightsome of the team will be in a veryquestionable state, the rest there's noexcuse they're just beer drinkingwannabes!! The liver is evil and mustbe punished!! where better to do thatthe worlds most sociable 7's!!

After a slow start to the season GHALadies have been finding a run of formof late as our newer squad membersfind their feet. We have reached thefinal of the national plate competition(which will be a re run of last yearsMull 7's final against Watsonians) andwinning the Kirkcaldy 7's.Unfortunately, we have lost theservices of Shelagh Brown who'splanned end of season retirement wasbrought prematurely forward lastmonth by a shoulder injury. I'm sureshe'll relish her new mull role ofrunning on the 'refreshments' - Gigglejuice anybody? This also means ex"westies" are getting thin on theground , but we can still rely, veryoccasionally on the services of oneGail Gyi, the self proclaimed 'bestwinger in the west' who has recentlycelebrated her half century!

Unfortunately Lismore is saying fond farewells to Emma Lejonberg and Cecile Leiby who return toSweden and France respectively after a grand first season with us and also for Abi Harrison whoreturns to the murky depths of deepest Somerset with her beautiful fiance (our coach/touchjudge/cheerleader/waterboy/WAG/monkey/drinking buddy) Tommo. Their efforts for the2006/07 season are very much appreciated and they will be greatly missed by the whole team.We wish them the best of luck in their future rugby endevours, wherever in the world they are.

Watsonians will be on Mull with our “party shoeson oh and “Katherine watch out for the ditch!!''

Touch Judges: GHA mens and ladies have several non-playing members. Some may be able to run touch, but only if absolutelynobody else can, because to be perfectly honest I probably wouldn't trust any of them to run a bath! Selkirk, Mull, Bute andPowerhouse. If you're desperate I can try and bribe Tommo (Lismore) with the offer of drink. I have also just (and i mean just)passed my level one refereeing. I have only refereed one mens game, so if short of officials could help out as touch judge.Medical Staff: David Robertson, Ann Lawson, Mairie McAdam, Neil MacHaffie, Dr Clegg and Chris SwinbanksPhysios: The physios in attendance on the touch line are for those playing only. If requiring first aid or medical attention at othertimes please report to the First Aid Tent. Our sincere thanks to all the volunteer members of the medical team
