Islay Community Recovery Group

Islay Community Council has established the Islay Community Recovery Group (ICRG) to

support Islay easing out of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Openness, transparency and goodwill are essential for the group to achieve its aims and to

reassure the community that everyone is working safely together in this extraordinary time.

It was agreed that a balance needs to be struck between the challenges of dealing with the

fears that some islanders have about the opening up of Islay and the requirements for

businesses to begin operating again.

ICRG will be a conduit for the transition of the community from resilience to economic,

social and cultural recovery. And will work in accordance with the Scottish Government’s

guidelines for the phased easing of lockdown.

The group is exploring the installation of clear signage across the island reminding everyone

of the requirements of social distancing, wearing face coverings and hand sanitizing.

In order to represent a wide cross-section of the community, a variety of people were invited

by the Community Council to join – from the churches, estates, distilleries, tourism, farming

and the health service. Islay Resilience Group, Islay Development Initiative, South Islay

Development and the Emergency Planning Group are all represented too. Jura Community

Council also joined the meeting believing that the group would be touching on areas where

Jura is also affected.

Page 4: Islay and the Covid-19 Virus - THE INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER ... · Islay and the Covid-19 Virus Last Updated 20/6/20 (4 pm) This document is an attempt to pull together in one place

Pat McGrann, who chaired the first two meetings, thanked everyone for following the

Scottish government’s guidelines during lockdown and for the enormous effort across the

island in supporting the community in this difficult time.

The group wants to ensure that this work is built upon as we progress towards the new

normal.

Minutes of ICRG meetings can be accessed on the Islay Community Council website.

If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions please email Islay Community Council.

The following phase of our timetable will run from 15 July until 18 October, coinciding

with the timings of the Scottish Government's route map, which guides the gradual lifting of

lockdown restrictions. We will publish this on 2 July 2020, and bookings will open on a

rolling two-week window from that date.

This ensures we can carry the optimal number of passengers, while implementing Scottish

Government guidelines - including social distancing.

For example:

From 9am on 30 June bookings will open for 1 July - 14 July.

At 9am on 2 July when the next phase of our timetable is published (for period 15 July - 18

October), bookings will be open up to 15 July.

At 9am on 3 July, bookings will be open up to 16 July, and so on.

Capacity

Page 10: Islay and the Covid-19 Virus - THE INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER ... · Islay and the Covid-19 Virus Last Updated 20/6/20 (4 pm) This document is an attempt to pull together in one place

Today's updated timetable, and the following phase (15 July - 18 October) include more

frequent sailings and will increase available capacity for customers right across the network.

We are implementing guidelines and safety measures - including social distancing. They're

designed to keep customers and crew safe and they dictate the number of passengers we can

carry. Our capacity per vessel is limited because of these safety measures. Should they

change, our capacity per vessel will also change.

Customer bookings

This year has been very different to the one many of us might have imagined and the

situation for travel continues to be changeable as we prepare for the easing of lockdown

restrictions.

For those passengers who already have a reservation with us, we are also dealing with those

on a rolling two-week basis. We will only make cancellations where we have to, based on

capacity. If you have a booking between 1-14 July, which will be affected by capacity

constraints, our team is in the process of contacting you.

If your booking is from 15 July onwards, we don't yet have an update for you. But we will be

in touch with you in line with our two-week rolling sequence.

Foot passengers

To help us manage demand effectively, we strongly advise all foot passengers on our

bookable routes make a reservation prior to travel.

We will make provision to accommodate passengers who have been unable to make a

booking - but it will be limited.

COVID-19 has changed many aspects of day to day life - including how you sail with us.

When planning travel, please remember to:·

• think of your safety and the safety of others by understanding the latest safety

guidelines, including the use of face coverings on public transport.

• be responsible when considering travel - your decision to travel could impact

someone else's essential journey - for example key workers and those travelling for

medical reasons.

• plan ahead and be prepared.

o When travelling on our bookable routes, we strongly advise you always book

ahead.

o When travelling on a 'turn up and go' route, capacity is limited, and your first

choice of sailing may not be always be available.

• stay in touch - we'll keep sharing guidance and information on changes to how you

sail with us via our website, our regularly updated frequently asked questions, and

social media feeds.

Whether you’re local or not, whatever your ability or experience in your chosen sport or leisure

activity, the sea can still catch you out and be unmerciful when it does.

The majority of beaches will not be lifeguarded. If you get into trouble call 999 and ask for the

Coastguard and we will come to your aid. But coronavirus hasn’t gone away and we all need to

follow the rules.

DOCTOR (Facebook 5/6/20)

Islay Medical Practice update

As the country slowly begins to move out of lockdown and we embark on Phase One of the Scottish

Government’s Covid-19 strategy, we are reviewing the services which we are able to provide to

patients. As you will have been aware, the lockdown put significant pressure on our healthcare team

and meant that we were only able to deal with urgent problems. Guidance on providing GP services

still requires that we limit Face to Face consultations as much as possible, but we are able to begin to

undertake some more routine work, provided it is safe and appropriate to do so.

From this week, we will be contacting all patients who missed their annual Chronic Disease Review.

If you are normally invited to the surgery for a birthday month review and were due to be seen in

either March, April, May or June, one of the clinical team will contact you by telephone to discuss

your medical condition. If your condition has been stable and any previous investigations and

Page 15: Islay and the Covid-19 Virus - THE INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER ... · Islay and the Covid-19 Virus Last Updated 20/6/20 (4 pm) This document is an attempt to pull together in one place

monitoring has been satisfactory, it may be that we suggest that your normal Face to Face review is

not necessary this year. Alternatively, if you require up to date blood tests or blood pressure

monitoring, we will discuss with you how and when this might be done. This is a huge amount of

work which requires us to contact nearly 400 patients but we hope to have completed this by the

end of June.

We are also looking at how we can increase the number of important clinical procedures which we

can undertake. The safety of patients, staff and Doctors is our primary concern so we will require to

space out appointments, increase the time allocated to each patient and follow cleaning and

decontamination procedures between each clinical contact. We may also ask those who can, and

feel comfortable doing so, to follow government advice on wearing face coverings in enclosed public

spaces. This will be discussed with you at the time you are offered an appointment and we will be

contacting patients who have been advised they are on a waiting list in due course.

During the month of June we will be rolling out remote video consulting for all GPs and nurses using

the NHS NearMe programme. This will allow us to carry out routine appointments remotely by

secure video link and we are confident that this will be a useful service which will be of benefit to

patients and doctors alike.

In the last week we have noticed an increasing number of phone calls to the surgeries asking GPs to

help interpret the government guidelines regarding essential travel and easing of lockdown

measures. The decision regarding essential travel and the implication of any changes to government

advice remains a personal responsibility, and falls out with our area of expertise. Fielding queries

regarding the government’s guidance takes us away from delivering health care to the community,

so we would ask you to think “is this a medical query?” before asking for a GP telephone call.

The basic message of staying at home as much as possible, ensuring you adhere to social distancing

and practicing good hand hygiene remain the same. We will continue to carry out the vast majority

of GP appointments over the telephone or using NearMe and only see in person those patients who

will benefit the most from a Face to Face appointment. However, it is important that you continue to

seek medical advice when necessary, particularly if you are concerned about a serious medical

condition or symptom which would require urgent attention.

For more healthcare advice and to keep up to date with the latest developments on the

management of Covid-19, visit www.nhsinform.scot.

UPDATE 27/3/20 Shona Hutchinson - We all understand that for relatives not seeing them is causing anxiety and stress, and that you all want to be able to communicate with loved ones. I have been trying for a long time to get our IT department to help us have WIFI set up, linked to our 810600 number and had hoped this would be in place for Christmas as I had secured funding to pay for this. Unfortunately this didn't happen and have been chasing this since. Before I had to self isolate I had been in contact with IT, advising that this work needed to be done asap before we had to close the doors to next of kin. Unfortunately, this didn't happen.

I would be grateful if relatives would be patient with staff who are trying to care for your loved ones. We know you want to know all is well with your loved one, but staff have lots of priorities on their time caring for the individuals that are there. They have the added pressure of having to do all this without my physical support. Please be kind and understanding of the position my staff are in. They are doing their best in an unprecedented situation.

The CWU have offered us to become an emergency service for the public. If things get worse

your postie could be delivering healthcare products, food and even medication.

1) Think about safety first, for yours and the postie.

2) If you see a postie coming towards your door please (DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR). We

will sign your parcels and letters for you.

We will leave the parcel, food or medication on your doorstep and then knock. Give the

postie enough time to step away from the door.

3) If you are already outside your house, go inside or step away 2 metres from your postie.

Please do not approach your postie.

If we tell you to stop and back off or close your door, don't feel offended. We are only trying

to help protect you from this virus.

(LET'S BEAT IT TOGETHER) please share this to let your family and friends know.
