PROJECT: ISLAND OF HOPE

PROJECT Island Of Hope.

The slums are known to have a large population living with HIV/AIDS. This project aims on first spreading awareness on HIV/AIDS, educating people on the different misconceptions of HIV/AIDS, to come up with support groups for those living with HIV/AIDS and to reduce stigma. This project will not only help those infected but those affected.

WHY

HIV/AIDS are a disease is not fully accepted in Africa as a disease that anyone can acquire. There is still a lot of myths and theories of its origin, spread and prevention. A lot of stigma is attached to those living with this disease are they are constantly seen as different and “dirty”

The project will seek to clarify and discuss these issues openly with an aim of making them aware.

This will also help the members living with HIV/AIDS, come out and share with others about their experience and challenges as people living with HIV/AIDS, through the support groups.

This project will also help the people living with HIV/AIDS be able to be financially sustainable and be able to provide for their families, through projects

WHERE

This project will take place in a school in Mukuru Kwa Njenga called “Utu Wema”, which is a Swahili word meaning Goodness.

WHEN

The project aims to kick off from January and will be carried on for a minimum of 6weeks.

WHO

This is a holistic project which will help everyone in the society. The project will focus and help mainly those living with HIV/AIDS. They will be empowered with entrepreneurship skills, they shall be confident to share their experiences, hence encouraging one another, just to mention a few.

The project will also benefit the families of such people as they will be now aware of how to deal with certain issues, for example how to ensure that their family members living with the disease are well fed

The community will also benefit from this because they will now be clear about various issues and also learn how to treat infected people and as a result reduce stigma.

HOW

Our main resource will be human resource; this will be a collective function of both the interns and all those who are to benefit from project that is the school and the administration.

We will partner with a VCT Centre or a hospital around each slum with an aim of getting the

interns trained and aware of certain issues concerning HIV/AIDS and most importantly to

know the position of those living with the disease.

This project will ensure that the children in the school and the community will be aware of the

disease and also will know ways of preventing it and also ways of managing it. This will be

done through thorough sessions with the students and parents, planning for healthy living and

eating, counseling, how to manage trauma, just to mention a few.

Additionally, one will get the chance to teach the children English and sciences. They will also

interact with the kids through various activities like sports, clean up’s and poetry. The intern

will be required to come up with such innovative ways to interact with the children.
