I

know many of you have been waiting for our year’s end

news letter to update you on events at Viveros Resortbefore Panama’s dry season arrives.The last few months have been very productive and inspite of some delays on amenities, people can still enjoythe Resort.

Our phase one reforestation plan is under way inaccordance with our commitment to Panama’senvironmental agency (ANAM) . We are planting 2,646trees and bushes including palms and fruit trees. The fruittrees have special importance in attracting tropical birdslike parrots, to the island. The native vegetation does nothave any fruit trees.

Thanks to the reforestation we will improve thelandscaping, including creating a park on the NorthHotel site. There you will nd the eight rooms in the

cottage hotel and the beach restaurant. The marina is nearto open; it will be nice to see it full of boats.

Enjoy reading the news and discover the “SeaVoyager”, a luxury cruise ship making a tour of all the PearlIslands (Las Perlas). This is an opportunity to discover thearchipelago, with environmental guides aboard to help youunderstand our natural heritage.

Panama’s economy

on the rise Economía de Panamá

As the world’s economy begins to recover fromthe nancial crisis, the Panamanian economy is

poised to rebound. Some forecasters have predicteda 5% GDP (Gross Domestic Product) for the upcomingyear while the Economic Commission for Latin Americaand the Caribbean projects a 4.5 percent growth rate.

The growth is fueled by the Canal expansion andmajor infrastructure projects, including the extensionof the recently completed $189 million Cinta Costera(coastal strip) around the Bay of Panama.

In the third quarter of 2009 the GDP rose by 1.1%and the government forecasts an overall GDP of 3%for the year, demonstrating that Panama withstoodthe global downturn and, although there was s slow

down in some areas there was growth in others of 8.8percent, and the economy never sank into arecession.

There are other major projects on the horizon,including public building projects and Panama’s metrosystem.

Meanwhile, in spite of the world downturn propertyprices and rentals in the area continue to increase.

embellecer Viveros

A massive planting of trees of dozens of varieties, many of them new tothe island, has begun on Isla Viveros. The planting is in line with our

commitment to Panama’s environmental agency (ANAM), and to residentsto further enhance the natural beauty of the island.

The existing greenery contains few trees with a girth of more than a fewcentimeters. That will be changed dramatically with the planting of 2,646trees that will bring additional color and provide food for the multitude of tropical birds in the region including parrots, parakeets and macaw.

The initial introductions on the north of the island will create three majorplantations, each containing a varied selection of trees. The trees will belocated in the area of the hotel, the restaurant and the lake, covering areasfrom 3,500 square meters, 8,477 meters and 8,513 meters, and will alsoline roadsides.

The plantings are under the direction of our resident environmentalconsultant, who will ensure they are adequately spaced to allow forindividual growth, providing sight lines and remaining free of rastrojo,(tropical vines). He will also ensure that each tree is located in an area bestsuited for its development.

U na plantación masiva de árboles en docenas de variedades se hainiciado en Isla Viveros. Este trabajo de sembrados – que incluye la

introducción de nuevas especies – es parte de nuestro compromiso con laAutoridad Nacional del Ambiente (ANAM) y con los residentes, de añadir a la belleza natural de la isla.

En las áreas verdes, existen pocos árboles que tengan un diámetro mayor aunos centímetros. Eso cambiará dramáticamente con la siembra de 2,646árboles que añadirán color y proveerán alimento para las muchas aves

tropicales de la región, como pericos, loros y guacamayas.

La introduccion inicial en el norte de la isla conformará tres grandesplantíos. Cada uno tendrá un selección variada de arboles y estaránubicados alrededor del hotel, el restaurante y el lago. Cubrirán áreas de3,500 m² 8,477 m² y 8,513 m² y a lo largo de los caminos.

La siembra está bajo la supervisión de nuestro consultor ambiental residente quien se asegurará que los árboles sean correctamenteespaciados para permitir su crecimiento individual. Esto permitirá líneasvisuales limpias y libres de rastrojos y lianas. El consultor también seencargará de ubicar a cada árbol en el lugar con las mejores condicionespara su desarrollo.

The trees will provide color, scent and fruit, a nesting and feeding place forbirds and monkeys.

Panama has one of the most diverse and colorful bird populations in theworld and planting fruit trees will be an environmental bonus, both for localbirds and migratory ocks.

Among the trees being introduced are a variety of palms from dwarf royalsand red palms to majestic coconut palms.

There’s nothing like coconut juice straight from the tree to freshen yourdrink or quench your thirst.

The trees that will be introduced include a full citrus range including lemon,mango, grapefruit and orange, rst providing colorful and scented owers,

followed by an abundance of colorful fruit.

There will also be avocados, red and yellow acacias, mussaenda’s andTabogana rose trees from Taboga, the Island of Flowers, which nestles closeto Panama City.

Durante la estación seca, nuestro consultor supervisará el riego regular del nuevo crecimiento, así cuando retorne la estación lluviosa, los residentesserán testigos de un crecimiento espectacular.
