Using Dramatic Arts in Kindergartens: Its Status and
Potential for Developing Creativity from kindergarten
teachers’ viewpoints

Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the degree of using
dramatic arts in kindergartens, its status and potential for developing
creativity among children. To achieve the research purpose, a questionnaire
was developed and distributed among 459 teachers. The results revealed
that only 15% of teachers use dramatic arts daily. Story play and role-play
were the most common dramatic arts used in kindergartens, and most
kindergartens do not have drama corners in the classroom. Moreover, most
teachers faced great to medium difficulties while implementing dramatic
arts, mainly described as the lack of proper equipment and probes,
convenient space for acting, time limits. Moreover, most teachers expressed
positive attitudes towards the use of dramatic arts and the consequences
were reported to be positive and encouraging when implemented. Yet, the
potential for developing creativity among children according to those
practices remain mostly moderate. In light of the study, the researchers
suggest that dramatic arts should be the main part of kindergarten programs,
and kindergartens should provide teachers with their tools as well as train
them on how to employ dramatic arts in their practices.
Keywords: Dramatic Arts, Creativity Development, Kindergartens.
