COMPANIES 3 > MUMBAI | 12 MAY 2019 VIVEAT SUSAN PINTO Mumbai, 11 May A venue Supermarts, which operates the DMart chain of stores in the country, reported a 21.4 per cent year-on-year net profit growth and a 32.1 per cent year-on-year revenue growth for the quarter ended March 31, 2019, (Q4) at ~203 crore and ~5,033 crore, respectively. The numbers were broad- ly in line with Street esti- mates. A poll by analysts of Bloomberg had pegged net profit at ~211 crore and rev- enue at ~5,122 crore for the quarter under review. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amor- tisation (Ebitda) for Q4 was at ~377 crore, up 27.9 per cent over the year-ago period and again broadly in line with Street estimates of ~395 crore. But Ebitda margins con- tracted for the third straight quarter, though the drop was marginal at 20 basis points to 7.5 per cent from a year earli- er. This is also the lowest in terms of Ebitda margins for DMart in three quarters. If viewed sequentially, DMart has seen a sharp recovery in profit growth in Q4 compared with Q3. For the three months end- ed December 31, 2018, DMart had reported its slowest net profit growth in eight quar- ters at 2.1 per cent as it grap- pled with growing competi- tion in grocery retail. Third quarter revenue growth came in at 33 per cent (year-on-year), which is also a festive quarter, said ana- lysts, implying the company had managed to maintain its pace of growth in terms of top line in Q4 amid competitive intensity. While the company did not specify same-store sales growth for Q4, analysts said it was between 15 and 18 per cent for the period under review. Same-store sales growth is the comparable sales growth of stores for one year and above. For the full year ended March 31, 2019, (FY19), Neville Noronha, managing director (MD) & chief execu- tive officer (CEO), Avenue Supermarts, said same-store sales growth was 17.8 per cent even as revenue grew 32 per cent year-on-year to ~19,916 crore and net profit went up 19 per cent from a year earlier to ~936 crore. The FY19 same-store sales growth was higher than the 14.2 per cent reported for FY18, sector analysts said, as the firm pushed higher sales throughput at its stores. Revenue from sales per square feet at DMart stores stood at ~35,647 for FY19 against ~32,719 in FY18, a rise of nearly 9 per cent. The company also added 21 stores in FY19, of which 12 were added in Q4 alone, tak- ing the total to 176 for the financial year. On Friday, chair- man and managing director M P Ramachandran announced that his elder daughter M R Jyothy (pictured) would take over as managing director (MD), while his younger daughter M R Deepthi would be whole-time director, when he steps down from the board from April 1 next year. The announcement has put the spotlight on 40-year- old Jyothy, who’s been a whole-time director at her namesake company since 2005 and been quietly driv- ing brand strategy and com- munication for the last few years. Her sister is general manager (finance), and assis- tant company secretary. It is unclear what role Ullas Kamath, joint MD and a vet- eran at the company will play, once Jyothy takes over. Jyothy is expected to be groomed for a year by Kamath and other seniors, said people in the know, as she prepares for the top job. Independent director R Lakshminarayanan will take over as chairman of the board while Ramachandran will be chairman emeritus. More importantly, Jyothy will now play an active role in business management — so far handled by Kamath and Ramachandran. A post graduate in management with an additional diploma in family-managed business administration, Jyothy has a good understanding of the fabric-care market in India, having led marketing initia- tives around mother brand Ujala, the fabric whitener started by her father, and by launching fabric spas also. Founded in 1983, Jyothy Labs, which started as a one- brand company, has since built a portfolio of products, thanks in part to its acquisition of German major Henkel’s India business in 2011. The acquisition gave Jyothy Labs access to brands such as Henko, Mr White, Fa, Pril, Neem and Margo. Apple’s wait bears fruit with sub-continent’s biggest store PAVAN LALL Mumbai, 11 May Two of Apple’s three re-sell- er locations in Worli (Mumbai) may have shut shop recently, but iPhone owners and future buyers need not fret. The company is set to unveil a 4,500 square foot location at the premium Palladium Mall in the next couple of months — it’s biggest store in the subcon- tinent, say those familiar with the developments. The store falls under the large format Apple Premium Reseller (APR) category. While Apple has been plan- ning the launch of self- owned mega stores in the past, those have been slow to take off because of ambi- guity surrounding regula- tions on foreign direct investment in retail. Incidentally, Apple kicked off the grand opening of its Apple Carnegie Library — what analysts call its bold- est retail experiment yet — in Washington DC on Friday. A historic building funded by Andrew Carnegie, the library was restored by Apple whilst retaining its period architectural look and feel. The building acts as an exemplar of the type of impression that Apple aims to accomplish at its new stores globally, which is to create a structure that serves as a community gathering place. Of course it may be a while before the same takes off in India, but the firm will follow the same process here. Apple did not respond to calls and messages seeking further information. In the meantime, the strategy for Apple is to enhance its prominence in major cities by opting for stores much larger than its existing formats, ranging from 1,200-2,000 square feet. The flagship store in Mumbai will be run by Aptronix. The million-dollar question that Apple owners have is whether it will pro- vide the same service at here as well. Three more large format APRs are in the pipeline, scheduled for launch across New Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad in the next year and a half, said people in the know. Since launching its first retail store Imagine more than a decade ago through Ample Technologies in 2004, Apple has grown to around 150 APR-format stores countrywide. It also retails products in multi- brand format stores such as Croma, Vijay Sales, and oth- ers, in over a 1,000 points of sale. Apple also sells its products in India through third-party retailers such as Maple and Nyasa, and online portals such as Amazon and Flipkart. Apple is yet to open its own stores in the country, and is currently in talks with the government. How long it may be before its own stores open their gates remains unclear but there is momentum on the ground. The manufacturer has ramped up local production since 2016 and makes the iPhone SE, 6S and the 7 models at its supplier Wistron’s Bengaluru facility. Foxconn, another of its suppliers, is also expected to begin assembling Apple’s higher-end phones in Chennai sometime later this year, a source confirms.
