DESIGNBUSINESSSIMULATION
The practice of teaching accounting andmanagementinabusinesssimulationenvironmentwas introduced in early 2003, with manifestsuccess in ISCAP ‐ School of Accounting andAdministrationofPorto, inthehopeofovercomingthe chronic gaps regarding those matters ofnational education well evidenced in thewidespreaddif icultyofadaptingtothecontextofstudentswhentheyenterbusinesslifeinthelabormarket.
It was within this line of concerns that wasconceived the introduction, in the syllabus of thecourse in accounting and administration, a newdiscipline ‐ called Project Enterprise Simulation ‐which has been working as a lab group work, inwhich Students are guided in the conduct ofaccounting processes, and bureaucraticmanagement situations and phenomena ofrepresentationofreallifecompanies.
Fromgroupsofthreestudents, virtualenterprisesare formed, eachone integratedbetween the fourclassesofmostcurrentcommercialactivities, withan average size corresponding to a staff of 35employees,eachbeingimposedgoodsandservicestransactions,classi iedinaelectronicformcatalog, being assigned to trainees the performance of alltasks involved in setting up companies andmanagingthedevelopmentoftheiractivity.
Theparts composing the simulation environmentarestudents(individualentitiessubjecttotrainingand assessment), companies they create (with abusiness plan and objectives), the State, theBanking and other public institutions (SocialSecurity,IRS,etc...)asalsoprivateinstitutions(eg,businessassociationsandtradeunions)andotheroutside irms(domesticandforeign),organizedinamarket.
Students activities (with the status of polyvalentmanagers and employees of their companiesinternally decided) and the economic units theymanage, are processed in an environment ofstronginteractionwiththeothercompanies, thosebeing the ones created by other student groups(about 300), and even those that compose the
remaining parts of market and businessenvironment (banks, insurers, consumers, foreigncompanies, public and private institutions, etc..),whilsttheselatteronesaremanagedbythesubjectteacheroritscoordinator.
In this way, a dynamic model of interdependentactivities is created, continuously generating factsand situations that affect the studentsbusinesses, whichmustreacttothemwhilecausingachainofactions thatmake sensewithin the Business Planthatisimposedoneachgroup.
Fromalltheinteractivitybetweenthecompanies, alot of information will be generated, thatdemandingacomplexmanagement, markedbytheobligation of meeting deadlines and objectives inan environment of work pressure near theauthenticrealityofbusinesslife, duetosomeoftheinformation being purposefully provided withlacksand/orinconsistenciesinordertogeneratedisturbance and cause internal discussion, stimulating the need to search for the mostappropriate solution, using the most convenientmeans: internet (available at all stations ),manuals,etc...
The workshops are conditioned by speci icguidelines, through which they introduce thenecessary impetus to make the market work(orders, deliveries, recruitment, dismissal, charges, taxes, etc...) and determine the actions to beundertakenduringthesession.
